I made a donation to Monrovia Volunteer Fire/Rescue. Their annual fundraiser with RD's Smokehouse Barbecue is April 27-29, 2023. I picked up 5 pounds of pulled pork and 5 pounds of pulled chicken. The food is AWESOME! Hubs told me it takes a fireman to carry those two trays of lovely meats. They were heavy. We were greeted by a fireman outside RD's. He verified my donation and went inside to bring us our orders of pulled pork and pulled chicken. We were given a fire truck sticker and reheating instructions. Our car smelled so good. This was our first visit to RD's and not our last. We plan to go back to try their ribs and wings. I was told by one of the customers to give the ribs and wings a try. He said they were his favorites. If you like BBQ, please give RD's a try. Hands down the best wings I've had in the Huntsville area despite being cheaper than a lot of places. One thing I really appreciate is the cheap sides. I can't stand it when a place wants to charge $5-7 for a small side of something like fries or hush puppies that they obviously buy or make in large batches. I've gotten the catfish plate from here a couple times at this point. Always delicious! Sides are amazing. Hushpuppies slap too. If you're looking for some good, home cooked style country food, this is the spot. My dad had the Brunswick stew and said it tasted just like his mom's, which is a high regard. I must say, my visit at RD's is good. The service was decent, but the lady at the register was trying to balance in-person orders and telephone orders. It was a lot and she needed some help, but nonetheless she was nice and answered our questions. I ordered the bbq chicken baked potato with all the fixings and a side of green beans. The food was fresh and well seasoned and the pulled chicken was so juicy and delicious! Just know that if you order a small side item, it's going to be served as an "extra small" side... lol maybe a full tablespoon. Another thing that I noticed was I ordered a peach cobbler dessert but there was no peaches in it...just straight crust. So I was a little disappointed about that and the fact that the restaurant had run out of forks and napkins. Luckily we took our food to go but please have these items available. RD has some great bbq and at the price, you just can't beat it. When I took my picture, I should have moved the piece of bread so the size of the ribs could actually be seen. After hearing super positive stuff about RD's for more than a year, we finally made the drive out to give it a try. Sadly, I can't say that it met my expectations. Really waffled between a 2 vs 3 star rating but settled on 3 due to the smoked wings being good and the fact that their service was lovely. RD's is located in what looks like an old gas station. I like repurposed buildings, especially when the businesses inside will feed me, lol, so I thought that was fun. Do be aware there's a big pothole in the front parking area, so be careful when you drive in. One other positive is I think prices are really good! Bbq is often fairly expensive, but I thought this place was quite reasonable. They have a fairly large menu of traditional bbq favorite, with brisket served on Fridays. There's room to eat inside. The lady who took our order on Tuesday was charming -- super sweet, patient, friendly, and accommodating. She did an excellent job. We ordered 5 smoked wings with fries, a pulled pork potato, and a pork plate with macaroni and cheese and sweet corn hush puppies. I'll start with the good stuff: the sweet tea we drank was tasty. My favorite item was the corn hush puppies; they were fried nicely and were pleasantly sweet and crunchy. My dad gave the wings his seal of approval. We saved one for boyfriend for me to take home and he said they were solid, too, though the one we brought him had not been cut super well and so there was still a sharp bone piece on one end. Lastly, the sweet bbq sauce was genuinely very good bbq sauce. I enjoyed it and would put it on pretty much any pork bbq product. The fries were just okay. They were seasoned nicely. The pork potato was mind bogglingly huge, and I like a bbq potato that adds bacon bits. The potato was cooked correctly. However, it suffered a bit due to the pork not being good, which I'm gonna get to. Not so good stuff: the macaroni and cheese was absurdly mushy and had no flavor. It looked unappetizing when it came out, and it was. I ate a couple bites to be sure my initial impression was correct, and then put it aside. Lastly, the pork just wasn't good -- or at least, not to my taste. Granted, bbq is EXTREMELY subjective and everybody likes something a little different than the next person. This stuff just wasn't for me. For one thing, while I am aware they don't pre-sauce their meat and that sauce comes on the side, it came out looking like...well, looking like it had already been tossed in sauce. It was a reddish color that I don't associate with cooked, unsauced pork. Well, whatever - the sauce was good at least. One of my two main problems with the pork were that it was pulled way too fine. It crossed over into shredded territory, which makes it very mushy and almost wet tasting. The other was that it was very, very salty. I like salty food as much as the next person, but this could only be balanced out by copious amounts of the bbq sauce. I enjoy bbq sauce, but I personally feel the mark of good pulled pork is that it can be enjoyed plain, with little to no sauce added. As it was, I couldn't eat this pork without a spoonful of sauce on each bite, further disguised by a small piece of white bread with each mouthful. I guess I've ranted about bbq long enough. Maybe pulled pork just isn't the thing to get here, or maybe they were having an off day after being closed on Monday for the holiday. TLDR: good smoked wings, bbq sauce, and sweet corn hush puppies. Service was excellent. Skip the mac and cheese and pulled pork. read more

I think this is one of my favorite places anywhere in the world. YES I SAID WORLD. The brisket is heavenly! They have catfish..wings that are DELICIOSO!! I've ordered 50 wings for Shabbat Dinner and had them ready in 30 minutes...they have saved my hiney more than once. Their baked potatoes...HUGE! Donald Trump HUGE. RDs offers some of the best BBQ around! And old crossroads gas station used to occupy this place, and they started their decline to out of business several years back when the EPA came down hard on their gas tanks. I'm glad RDs settled here--very good local food, and friendly folks! I haven't had anything bad from them. My family's absolute favorite is their Baked Beans (you have to try that if you are here). Ribs//great! Pork//excellent. Sausage//tasty. Their sauce is custom as well--don't use too much because it is flavorful. Try their specialty slap-jaw sauce. It isn't too spicy and it isn't too sweet. Smack-Jaw sauce is good stuff on a smoked sausage dog. The atmosphere isn't anything to brag about, but you go here for the food and not the decor. It is clean and they have plenty of space if you choose to dine in. One cool thing (pre-COVID): they were hosting an open mic night for a while. Give it a try if you haven't. This was my first Alabama BBQ experience and it was excellent! I had the ribs and the bbq chicken salad. The smells of the pit were quite inviting, and the service was great from beginning to end. I ordered the Loaded Rib Potato with white sauce and smackjaw sauce on the side and it was absolutely amaaaazing! The rib meat was so tender and perfectly permeated with smoke. The potato was piping hot, fluffy and a generous size. The potato and toppings' ratio was proportioned well. Undoubtedly the BEST loaded potato I have ever had. I'd definitely recommend RDs to others. I look forward to visiting again to try other things on the menu. Must try the smackjaw Sauce! Trust me. Ask questions later. Lol.
