I was torn between 3 or 4 stars. Decided in 3 due to weak coffee and the dipping items that come with the bread are lacking in flavor. This is the first time we have gone since the renovation. Don't like the chairs. Nonetheless, had been there a few times before and thought it was overpriced. I had written this off my list but now it is back on! Just make better coffee. We were a party of 5 and everyone enjoyed their meal. It's not cheap but no more that somewhere like Brios and I rather support a local place than a chain. Food was better too. My husband had steak Frits which he said was delicious. I had an appetizer and salad. Huge spinach and kale salad which was very good but needed a bit more cleaning (a little gritty). Had been here 3 times. Twice with good experience but this most recent was a bust. Wish I could give it a 2.75- not quite a 3. Was incredibly disappointed in my meal and service. Downtown Boston high prices but the food quality, presentation and service of a mediocre restaurant. The good; fast service, fun energetic vibe and decor to the place. Appetizer of Parmesan frites were crispy and good. Warm,chewy, crusty bread and spicy oil dip were good. The OK; ordered scallop dinner for $38. Perfectly seared 4 large plump scallops, plain with no sauce or seasoning. The meh; Side of spinach sauté (plain,but adequate, not over cooked) The bad; The other side was listed as lemon risotto. It was the worst risotto I've ever had -didn't resemble risotto in any way and had absolutely no lemon flavor. Tasted like Uncle Bens instant white rice cooked in chicken bouillon. Rice grains were long grain, crumbly, separate lacking any creaminess typical of risotto, and definitely not short grain as Arborio rice should be. This "risotto" was on 4 out of 6 of our plates and everyone agreed it was terrible. The plating was not artistic in any way, just three foods plopped on a plate as you would see at a cafeteria. They should be embarrassed to serve an incredibly "meh" meal at that price point. In addition, the waitress served meal and disappeared, never to came back to check on us until table was cleared 45 minutes later. I felt like had been taken for a ride since the price did not match the food quality,description, presentation or service. Out of six diners at our table only 1 thoroughly enjoyed their meal and 5 of us said it was just ok but overpriced for the quality. Will not be coming back. read more

Kind of disappointing. My friend and I went there for a late lunch. She had the salmon salad and I had the turkey meatloaf. They offered a choice of sweet potato fries or salad, not both for $13. No bread was offered until we requested it at the end of the meal. My friend's salmon was tasty, but the turkey meatloaf tasted like warmed over turkey burger and was lukewarm. This place has gone downhill since I was last there a few years ago -- they had huge portions and better food. And I think a $31 tab for lunch (including tax & tip) with no drinks, dessert or coffee is a bit high. read more

Met two best friends I had not seen in 35 years here - my first time at Blue. Our reserved table was ready and our waitress spoiled us with lots of time to talk and as much attention as we needed. Wait staff was excellent. Food was fabulous- pumpkin bisque, seared scallops, grilled salmon, steak and salads. Everything was perfect and the atmosphere lively, fun and not overwhelming. Was invited there for brunch today and I will not go back there if I can avoid it. The service was horrible and the food was less than mediocre. It took 15 minutes to get coffee. I ordered an omelet made with egg whites and it came out made with whole eggs. By the time it was re-made (took forever), everyone was done eating. They did take it off the bill. I requested that the omelet be made with spray oil instead of butter (I was told no problem) and it felt as if it had been made with extra butter instead. I wanted fruit to go with my omelet instead of potatoes, but it was not an option even if I was willing to pay more for it. The only bread option was white toast (or english muffin). In this day and age not to have wheat bread is unheard of! Anyway, as you can see we did not have a good experience. read more

The only reason I am giving this place a star at all is that the hamburger was good and our bartender was nice. Other than those two things, I absolutely hated this place. We went on a Saturday evening around 6 p.m. and sat at the bar. It wasn't too busy but that changed very quickly. It was way overcrowded which wouldn't have been so bad but there were so many pretentious, uptight and haughty people in there that it was unbearable. There was a medical emergency in the dining area and the only thing the majority of patrons were concerned about was whether if this emergency was going to slow down their being seated or getting a drink and to hell with the poor guy that was lying on the floor. Do yourself a favor and go to Not Your Average Joe's if you are in this area. read more

Food is consistent. We find the the bar staff very inconsistent almost rude. I want a good drink without the bartenders bad attitude and lack of attention. Someone should enlighten the staff that when you work for tips you should at least pretend you care. A good neighborhood place. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

The Food was absolutely FANTASTIC. I had the steak frites in a wine sauce, and it was absolutely amazing. The steak was tender and juicy, the wine sauce was sweet yet salty, and the frites were fresh and cooked to perfection. However, our steaks came out uncooked, so we sent them back, and the waitress was unbelievably nice about it, and gave us free deserts. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and was very stylish. The wait staff was knowledgeable and kind, as well as efficient. The only thing I would complain about was the noise, because there was a large group of people sitting near us with toddlers and younger children who were making alot of noise, which they did not handle properly; they simply ignored it, even though they were giving them the evil eye. Other than that, I would recommend Blue on Highland to anyone. read more

Ate there the other night with my wife and daughter. We ordered two apps, one was the scallops ( very good ) and the other was the parm. fries ( under cooked and soggy and way to much parm. cheese ). My wife ordered the Rissotto and it was the texture of a fried rice from a chinese restaurant not moist at all very dry. I order the pork chop and it had zero flavor and was horrible ( I order pork chops all the time ). My daughter got the grilled chicken and they gave two nice size pieces, one was thin and the other was large and under cooked ( pink in the middle of one piece ). Cooking 101 is always try to use two equal size pieces. The waitress was nice and offered a free desert due to us not liking the food , but I feel a manager should have taken the time to come speak to us. We had lunch here a few months ago and was was pretty good ( loved the cheese plate, which they took off the menu ) so that day made us want to come back, after this meal never again. My husband and I ate at Blue last night and were very disappointed. They need to remove the cavatelli pasta dish they currently have on the menu. It is so bland, the combo of ingredients is aweful. When I told our server I did not care for the dish she did not even offer to get me something else nor did she take it off the bill. Unforgivably weak. We went their for brunch, and they couldn't even reach the bar for competent for the easiest meal of the day. My omelette was lacking in all of its ingredients, and the spinach should've been sauteed beforehand. The hash browns were of the totally lazy let's-just-throw-some-chopped-potatoes-in-the-fryer-and-call-em-hash-browns school....and they had been sitting out for probably an hour. The bacon was overdone to the point of cracker-esque and had also been sitting out. My son's grilled cheese was the most perfunctory I've ever seen, with wonder-bread-like-bread (redundant, I know), flavorless cheese, and WAY too much butter. His fries were the mass-produced, bought-frozen variety. If this food were served in a diner, it would be a sin...in a restaurant with pretensions to being good, it's just pathetic. read more

Very good service. Food was okay. I ordered the risotto special and the rice was overcooked and not at all creamy the way risotto should be. The vegetables were a bit large and clunky in the dish. On the other hand, tried the braised short-rib sandwich and it was delicious. The meat was cooked and seasoned beautifully. If you need to eat and want an average meal- this place is for you. Don't think your food will look anything like the website- that is for foodies like me, in reality- my salmon was cooked properly, only to be ruined for the arbitrary plating and a not so interesting sauce that looked like a child got loose in the kitchen with a squirt gun. My salad was more than wilted (I throw rotten greens away- and here they ended up in my bowl). The waitress was nice and attentive so I am going up a star. read more

I've dined at Blue on many occasions, often stopping in with a friend after work. They offer a range of steak and chicken dishes as well as seafood and a few seasonal entrees. My favorite is the salmon over parmesan risotto which is so good! I also like that they have great appetizers such as crab cakes, scallops and eggplant, which I sometimes order in lieu of a full meal if I've had a late lunch. I also like the atmosphere, which is upscale and modern, although I wish they had more booths. In warmer weather, the front windows open wide to the street, so it's like dining 'al fresco'. Since we heard they had recently revamped the menu and the interior, we thought we would give it a try since it had been a while since our last visit. The new interior did not impress. It was loud, very industrial and felt like a cafeteria. The wood walls, no linens on the tables and all the hard surfaces just made it feel very unwelcoming. Even sitting in a booth with walls to the ceiling, it was not cozy! The lighting was awful too. I think the addition of some art, mood lighting and some soft surfaces would help. Bottom line, it now has a cafeteria vibe! So we focused on the food. I had 2 appetizers for my entree and the portions were very generous -one would have been plenty. The lamb lollipops were yummy with a salad and balsamic syrup. The fish tacos, while having generous portions also, were served with fried fish which was not mentioned on the menu. While good, I would have preferred the fish grilled. My husband ordered the NY Strip only to find that they didn't have any so he ordered the rib eye without blue cheese. It arrived with blue cheese and was very tough. He is not a picky eater but did not like his meal. Unfortunately, I do not think we will be returning to the updated Blue on Highland. read more

I gave this restaurant three stars based on past experiences and our experience tonight with their takeout service. Let's start with the positive: my husband and I have gone there and sat by the bar on a Saturady night after a movie and had a great light meal - either salad and a flatbread or a burger and fries and it was tasty and the service was very good. We will go back again in person. Tonight we had takeout with our son who was home from college and I have to say we were very disappointed. My husband's fries were good and his turkey burger was also fine. My son and I both ordered the chicken piccata and it was tasteless and the pasta was a bit overcooked. The wedge salad was fair as the lettuce was not crisp and the tomatoes were not as ripe as I would have liked. Honestly I did not eat the chicken after trying it three times. I plan to make my piccata sauce to put over it tomorrow so it will have taste. Disappointing because we generally think this restaurant is pretty good. read more

Q: When is a martini not a martini? A: When you order it from the amateur bartenders on weekend duty at Blue on Highland. Aside from being undeservedly arrogant and humorless, they are more qualified to pull taps at The Yardhouse than pleasantly mix and serve cocktails for patrons waiting for their table on a Saturday night. They are downright unprofessional. The OMG moment occurred when I ordered a vodka martini, straight up, with olives, after having to finally ask the young female bartender if she could take my order after five minutes of her emptying the dishwasher and making eye contact with me at least three times. My friend chimed in that he would have one, too, but with no vermouth, at which point she declared rather tersely that, "We never put vermouth in our martinis." Oh, really? I asked her to make an exception for mine. No more need be said. And I just loved the eyebrow raising I was treated to from her male counterpart when I asked him for the tab so we could close it out and take our seats for dinner (with the equally humorless and disinterested waitress). Despite the bad overall service, the food was good. Lighten up, wait staff! Just because "blue" is in the name of the restaurant doesn't mean you all need to be. read more

We were seated at 5:15pm with the acknowledgement that they needed our table at 7pm for another reservation. We were near the window and the angle of the sun had as fairly toasty, and half of us were squinting to see, but the hostess refused to close the windows and shades; upon leaving the restaurant, we stopped briefly in the restrooms and upon exiting, found that all of the windows and shades had been closed for the next guests; it was 6:53pm. At the beginning of dinner, we had to wait a while to place our orders. The drinks were not served to the ladies first, in particular, to the most senior lady for whom we had mentioned had a birthday. The lasagna was not piping hot, the middle was in fact only luke-warm. The crabcakes were stringy and the accompanying succotash lacked flavor. The children's slider option proved a winner (after we removed the cheese, which wasn't mentioned on the menu), however the children's chicken fingers were overly salty. read more
