Very cute bookstore. I came here for the hot chocolate, however. This was very disappointing hot chocolate and was clearly flavored with some type of Hershey's syrup, which is the worst ingredient anyone could possibly use in hot chocolate besides water. I was not impressed. read more

This was definitely a disappointing experience. We stopped by on a late midday Saturday, and the bookstore area was closed off. There wasn't a sign or anything, just chairs and furniture blocking the entrance. The young lady in the ice cream/coffee shop told me they closed it on Saturdays because it gets "too crazy." There was about 3 people milling about outside eating, and here I am with money in my pocket for books. Oh well? The boutique shop next door was OK, but it was small - and even smaller on their friendliness. No smile, no personality, no anything - the young girl working this particular day was in straight assassin mode. The whole vibe at this place was off...instead of this kind, friendly, happy-go-lucky hippie vibe - it was definitely more pretentious, and almost like genuine dislike for people. Let's paint the scene... It was a cold day in Nederland. A girl was looking for a latte when she stumbled upon the cutest hole in the wall bookstore that just so happened to serve coffee as well. When she asked if they had any homemade syrups, the kind bearded barista said, "The Hot Fudge for the Mocha is the only one." "I guess that's my fate, then", said the girl. A few minutes later, a to-go cup appeared on the counter. The girl grabbed the cup and walked out of the bookstore with a friendly farewell and thank you. She hadn't yet tasted the mocha but was already warmed by the interaction. Finally, the time came to try the mocha. It was beautiful, silky smooth and ridiculously chocolaty. Stopped here for ice cream--the bookstore, ice cream shop, and boutique share the name Blue Owl and are all in the same building. Best peach ice cream I've had in decades, can't say enough about it. We were in Nederland for lunch and had a taste for dessert. One of the locals told us about this place so we thought we'd try it. The main part of the store is the shelves of used books. (There used to be tables, but they were removed because of COVID. If you want to sit and enjoy your ice cream there is a bench outside. The ice cream portion of the store is a service window where they take your order. There is a list of the ice creams they have available. The ice cream was good and refreshing. I didn't spend much time looking through the used books before getting ice cream because I haven't seen a used book store yet that has much other than lots of fiction paperbacks. read more

Where to start? Well, we stopped at Blue Owl today for some ice cream. Since I'm not much of an ice cream person I decided to pop in to the book shop. The neon open sign was on so I walked up to the door to open it and was surprised to see a paper cup over the door knob. Confused by the cup on the doorknob I looked at the young guy standing behind the ice cream cart and said , "is the store closed today? His response was "CAN YOU READ???" I looked at the cup and said "it says closed", to which he replied "EXACTLY." I looked back at him and said , "Do you need to be so rude? It is absolutely unnecessary to talk to anyone like that." My husband then addressed him and the kid's response was, "I'm sorry if I made you feel that way" with a smirk on his face. My husband told him to wipe that smartass grin off his face and asked him if his mom taught him to talk to adults in such a way. We were completely stunned at how rude he was. After reading reviews of the shop it appears this must be a problem that trickles down from the management or owner, seeing that she makes no effort to apologize or handle these aforementioned issues that others have also shared. You have an opportunity to represent your community as a reputable business owner with a charming bookshop and it appears that you are blowing it. I'm attaching photos for reference. My advice is to patronize the yogurt shop across the street instead of wasting your money on a business whose owner seems uninterested in the way that her employees communicate with her customers. read more

Such a cute little shop! I'm already short and felt the shop was designed for hobbits. Don't get me wrong, that's what's precious about it! The day we visited was very nice, the line for ice cream was out the door; we would otherwise have seen more people inside for books and gifts. There was only one guy working, and despite the long line, he's the most patient store owner I've seen. Our ice cream (Mulberry flavor?) was so dreamy, I was shocked when I learned it'd come from Magill's, which has a store not far from us but we'd never tasted such wild berry goodness. Maybe they only export exotic flavors to remote towns? I digress... When you're here, please take the time to walk around the shop, enjoy some coffee (for a simple cup of decaf we asked, he pressed some decaf beans and made us an Americano, it was so rich and fragrant, definitely the better cup of coffee for me that day!) This is a great, cozy little place with amazing hot chocolate. There are many used books available as well as some new ones. The selection is solid, with many books being tucked into corners and crevices that are not immediately obvious. Ask if you can't find something! There's also a small selection of candles, tapestries, incense, and jewelry. If you want more such options, head next door to the Blue Owl Boutique. One standout item are some really cool leather-bound journals that come in a variety of sizes. They're a touch pricey, so I haven't bought one yet, but I will eventually. They'd make a great gift. This place tends to have really good pies and offers the best ice cream selection in town. It's a great place to cozy up with a book and a hot drink on a cold day. There are sometimes poetry readings and live music in the evenings and an acoustic guitar lives in the shop for anyone to play. Definitely worth your time. read more

Walking into Blue Owl Books & Boutique, the perfect smell of freshly-baked brownies immediately hit us. It was a perfect spot to stop for a snack after a hike near Eldora. The ambience of the cafe was, by far, its best asset, and the food was great as well. My three friends and I all had the breakfast burritos, both meat and vegetarian. While the portions weren't huge, the burritos were flavorful and served hot. We also all had various drinks (mocha, hot chocolate, chai) which were all exceptional, helped no doubt by the homemade chocolate made at the cafe. For dessert we shared two of the freshly-baked brownies which were giant and delicious. The great food was complimented by a bunch of locals sitting and chatting in the bookstore side of the cafe. Awesome find! I am a sucker for bookstores and coffee. Even better is that this little gem is nestled right in the heart of a quaint mountain town. They have many used books for sale, among other items. I felt like taking a pile of old books to one of the tables by the sunlit windows and thumbing through each one until my little heart was content. My sister ordered a European hot chocolate and enjoyed it! I honestly don't remember the latte I ordered being anything out of this world, but the feel and look of this place really made the experience! It's quiet, peaceful, and beautiful place to spend time reading, grabbing coffee and snack with a friend, great place to take your kiddo(s) for ice cream. They often have guest chefs come in and cook fresh authentic food, from Jamaican to gourmet street tacos, paired with live acoustic music from local artists!! What!! I stopped by there today, and picked up a sage stick, and two really cut blouses for 50% in the boutique (sale still going!). Ice cream always wins. I sampled black cherry, peanut butter chocolate and blueberry cheesecake. I ended up getting the blueberry cheesecake, 1 small scoop in a sugar cone. I thought $4 for the small size of the scoop was pricey but I think that's the price you pay for a small local quaint shop that has little or no competitors in the city. Also, I should be dieting. There are maybe10 flavors to choose from here that included cookies & cream, chocolate, mint chocolate, mocha almond fudge, etc. Of the flavors I tried, black cherry was my least favorite because it had a candy-like flavor to it (the way cherry Jello might). I liked that they offered all types of cones (sugar, plain waffle, chocolate waffle, sprinkled waffle or cake cones). I also liked how there was a metal swirl cone holder @ the register when you pay so you can rest your dessert while you use your hands to access your wallet. The ice cream part of the shop is a narrow section right of the small bookstore where there are little tables. I sat and unload my heavy back-pack and laid out my papers to work on, he asks me "can I get you something?" I told him I will be up in just a sec, I really want a chai. Then asked for the wifi, he responded "you come in here sitting up to use our wifi and have no intention to buy anything, you can only have it if you buy something." So Rude. I responded, why would you assume another intention when I have told you twice now that I intend to come up and get a chai? We stopped for a quick break in Nederland and were attracted to the Blue Owl based on the groups of people happily eating ice cream cones outside. The bookshop is closed right now (COVID) but the ice cream counter is open and it was delicious!!! I had the espresso - chocolate espresso beans in chocolatey-coffee ice cream. My hubby had huckleberry- a sweet, creamy berry-flavored ice cream. It was really hard to pick a favorite. The guy taking our order was wearing a mask, which we appreciated, and was super friendly. Cant Rate the Ice Cream or the books. But I can and will rate the friendliness of the staff. That was great. Lots of different kinds of ice cream. Some even on the adventorous side. I went with a Blueberry shortbread and a water. The blueberries were fresh and bursting in every bite. The shortbread was moist and seemed to be made that day. They also had a honey peach muffin but were out of them. And Id love to try that. My Kids had some Peanut butter ice cream. And said it was good. They Are kids what do they know lol. This quaint little shop is perfect for a quick stop on an outdoor weekend. We stopped here on our drive up through the mountains to enjoy the fall colors and was attracted to the European style hot chocolate. After grabbing a couple of cups we grabbed a seat in the back in the midst of all these used books... I love the smell of books.
