Came here at the last minute to get a quick bite to eat with my daughter. The food was really really good. It wasn't very busy for a Monday night. Waitress was amazing. I read some of the reviews when we arrived and was a little scared. Our food was delicious and the temperature of our food was hot, fresh and very flavorful. We had the loaded nachos as an appetizer, nacho burger and the spicy pasta. Everything was fantastic and large portions. Great job to the cooks! Well worth it. read more

There is a wide selection of beer but I felt their food was not on par with their price point. The brisket taco my friend ordered was just some meat in a tortilla and not much else. Have you ever just wanted a change in where you eat out? Try something new? I did and spearheaded a trip to Southtown! We walked in, received a hello and water immediately! Great start! We then sat for OVER a half an hour before ANYONE acknowledged us again and that was after we went to the bar and inquired if we could order any time soon. So... 45 minutes in we were asked what we would like to order... two burgers, fries, one with garlic fries, prickly pear margarita and ice for our water. 15 minutes later we got the margarita and we again asked for ice. 15 minutes later we got our burgers. His burger was great! The bacon was crispy and thick and the burger was tasty. I know because I took a bite (or 2!!) My burger not only had a rancid smell it tasted bad. I could not eat it. They took off the price of the burger, however, said it was fresh today. I was trained in quality control for the HEB meat plant years ago. I know this meat was not good. I don't know why- it just wasn't. Garlic fries meant two tablespoons of minced garlic dumped on top of fries. I think my breath still stinks a day later even though I tried to scrape it off. The margaritas were okay. No alcohol because nothing registered!! Food was served by the same people who cleared the tables. It was just all around a crummy experience. What I do know is restaurants are now all under staffed and going out to eat is a gamble at best. I would not say not to go to Blue Star, maybe we were there on a super bad day, bad moment in time for them. We won't go back, but if you're into beer and enjoy their atmosphere... enjoy! read more

We stop in whenever we visit the area, which is every couple of years. I originally loved them because they had some amazing sour beers. The sours have disappeared over the years and have gotten less sour. I still go back because I have good memories, but I'm not as impressed as I once was. The food is a little on the expensive side, and they don't have great vegetarian offerings. We skipped eating there on this trip because of that. This time they only had two sours on the menu. One was a raspberry, which I didn't even try. I'm not a fan of sweet and fruity beer, I want a strong sour. I got the Southtown sour. It was OK. It was a little weak on the sour. My kids were with me and they got sodas. One of them had the root beer and he loved it. The other one got the ginger ale. It was so strong on the ginger that it was undrinkable. I tried it, it was awful. This was my fourth or fifth visit to Blue Star over the past five years. After this experience, I think I'll probably skip going there on my next trip. read more

My husband was in a band that played here, and sometimes I would be there for the gigs. The food is delicious. I usually ate the salmon, which was perfectly done and some of the best I've eaten in a restaurant everywhere. I also had a hamburger there that was juicy and delicious. The beer is good, as is the selection. If you are a beer lover and into local microbrews then youve gotta try this place! I usually drank well drinks, or sangria. They make a particularly good sangria, if that's your thing. The servers were always attentive and friendly, even though the place was packed. The music was always great, too. The reason I took off a star is because of the parking. As a handicapped person, it is a nightmare. The parking lot was always jammed, and getting a spot within a reasonable distance from the building was an exercise in frustration. I understand that they don't own the lot so their hands are pretty much tied, but more handicapped spots would be great. I recommend Blue Star Brewing. Owner Joey runs a great establishment. He also has a bar, eponymously named, on St. Mary's that I used to frequent back in my wild and wooly single days back in the early '90s. Plenty of food choices but I didn't try any this time (see my previous review for the apps that I tried in the past). They're located right on the riverwalk in South Town at the Blue Star arts complex - outside seating and inside seating. Friendly staff. Pints are $6 and I was told growler refills were $8 - not sure if that's accurate or not - seems kind of cheap. They will refill growlers from other places. You can walk along the riverwalk to get there. Just keep your eyes out for the Blue Star signs and then climb on up to street level. They have a decent sized parking lot too. I recommend the Texican Lager and the Apache Lager - but remember, I'm not a very adventurous beer dude. I find something I like and I tend to stick with it... read more

Service was good. We were there with six and didn't have any issues getting a table around 6:30. Food was OK. Beer was tasty and there seemed to be a lot of variety. (I only had the sour.) The fried pickles were amazing! There's some coriander in the batter and a hint of spice. They come with ranch and a very mild campfire sauce. They were so good we ordered another round for the table. I had the patty melt. So-so. The fries are delicious though. Others had the German Plate (rave reviews), brisket tacos, the Thai noodle dish and a burger. We both thought that the burgers were almost too thick. (My patty melt was medium rare at best.) DO BETTER! You would think with such a beautiful location, they would take more pride in their food and beverage. The beers my wife and I got were warm...both times. The bacon cheddar burger I ordered was cold and raw in the middle, my wife's turkey BLT was bland and literally just two slices of toast with freezer cold turkey, avocado & bacon in the middle. The cup of chili soup we ordered had the look and texture of dog food. The only good part about our food were the fries. I went to the bathroom at one point and the floor was sticky, urinals were filthy, there was no toilet paper, and no soap to wash your hands. And this was on at Monday at about noon.. how do y'all not even have the proper standards to even clean the bathrooms? Came here for lunch to try out something new. The place is really chill on the inside. I love that it has an indoor/outdoor setup. Perfect for nice days. Something I have heard so much about and have tried before. Because I know it's incredibly savory, I was looking forward to it. When the food arrived, we were missing a plate. They are 4 star fries. Service was good. Outdoor spacing for Covid was okay... not great, but not terrible. They have a variety of beers and margaritas you can drink. As a self-claimed margarita Connoisseur, I was a little let down by how sour they were. The place was empty that afternoon (weekday). The food was OK, but overpriced. I won't be going back. There are too many other choices - maybe not as affordable in South Town, although there ARE similar options. On another note: Why can't restaurants like Beto's, EZ's, etc. just maintain the dining rooms? If I'm going to spend $60 for two people, I don't expect it in a place that makes Whataburger look spotless. read more

I am glad that they are open during this challenging time we are all in. Right now we can dine in at restaurants at only 25% capacity. They only have the outside seating area available for customers. I think that that is a big mistake. The chips and salsa was okay. The drinks never have disappointed me. The raspberry margarita was delicious. I highly recommend it. The service is slow and I hope that things improve soon because people will become less patient as things open up more. Some people left the line because it was taking so long. I specifically asked for no bacon and asked if I could have extra avacado, but the server forgot and he never came back after we ordered our food. Also the sandwich itself was two buttered pieces of bread with deli chicken, lettuce, avacado, and tomatoes and lacked a lot of flavor. Tuesday Jazz Night My friend had recommended that I come to Blue star brewery for some live jazz after I expressed interest in going to a jazz club where we just listen to music and not talk to each other. I was the happiest person in the jazz room on the first night we went I tell you; the happiest couple was dancing off to the side while the big band played. If you would prefer not to sit up close and personal in front of the band I suggest your party arrive a bit early. I find the food at Blue star to be phenomenal + Cobb salad ($13) + Jalapeno brisket poppers ($9) + Dressed green salad ($5) + Ginger ale - I haven't been this impressed with ginger ale since my ginger ale encounter at AVANT in California +/- Pulled pork cheese fries ($10) +/- Mushroom mac and cheese ($9) - Caprese salad ($8) Jazz nights are Tuesday nights starting at 8pm to 10pm, featuring different live jazz bands every week and sparse parking at night. First and last time ever going here. We had an extremely disappointing experience. My group and I waited over 3 hours due to the incredibly slow service from Geena. We saw her only 4 times throughout our entire visit. She promised to bring silverware but never did, so we had to get it ourselves. She also failed to check on us after our food was served. When we finally requested our checks, it took 37 minutes to receive them, and to our surprise, a 25% gratuity was automatically included. Never have I encountered such a high mandatory tip before. I didn't take any pics because I went as a guest for a Christmas work party but the food was so so good. We started with brisket poppers, Mac and cheese, and Frito pie. The poppers were my favorite the texture and spice was perfect. The frito pie was made with a queso vs shredded cheese and really hit the nostalgia spot for me. It reminded me of the concession stand when I was a kid. The mac and cheese really missed the mark. There wasn't much flavor and the cheese didn't stick to the pasta it was almost a soup consistency. I got the grilled cheese and tomato soup and it was perfect for the 20 degree weather. The bread was a crusty sourdough and the soup was the perfect companion.
