Let me start by saying they have an excellent location in the Blue Star arts complex. Their brew menu is great- they have menu staples like the Texican and switch it up with some seasonal rotations featuring more interesting flavors like the Raspberry Geyser sour. I've come here a handful of times since it is so convenient, and have always received great service. Unfortunately, the food is just unremarkable. This restaurant is in a rapidly growing area with great new restaurants popping up monthly, and sub-par bar food just can't keep pace. Their Kale Caesar is large hunks of wet kale with standard caesar dressing. They have garlic french fries that are limp shoestring fries with a whole clove of garlic unceremoniously dumped on top. Their fish and chips is their most reliable dish. Great stop for beers and some live music on first fridays! I hope to see the menu improve and hopefully the kitchen will branch out more. read more

It was very busy last night, but no excuse for bad service. They kept trying to give us other people's food. We should have taken it because we waited a long time for our food. They would blame it on the new guy or "your waitress wrote the wrong table numbers" it doesn't matter. We ordered the fried pickles and didn't care for them. The pickles were well done and to salty, especially in the batter. I got their nachos 1/2 chicken 1/2 beef. They were not hot and you could tell they were on the fry line for a while because they were very dry. The other food was the fried fish sandwich, fish tacos and the German plate. Everybody liked their food, but we had to chase down wait staff for refills and other things we needed. The sour beers taste tart and nice. Unfortunately that was really the only thing I enjoyed. The food is decent to fill you up, but it's definitely not the best. I would say order the patty melt and garlic fries. The schnitzel is fried in the same oil as all the fish items on the menu so it ends up picking a fishy taste. Parking can be challenging, however their food is good! Haven't seen some of their heritage Belgian Sours in a while... Used to have two excellent sours, one with tamarind and another named after aliens; both were absolutely wonderful. Been here a couple of times after my evening walk on the Riverwalk. Service is okay, friendly but not great on refills or watching their table. I ordered the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque last night. I asked for croutons for the Bisque, waitress didn't even think they had croutons (in did they did, it came with our side salad) and the Grilled Cheese, was horrible. Cold. Over burnt and they ran out of sour dough and had to use rye, not very good. Great place to hang out - We sat outside, and then the wind/rain/hail/storm came so everyone on the patio ran inside, which was fun but not part of the restaurant, glad they had plenty of seating available inside for all of us. read more

My visit in March during spring break took me to the Arts district and found this Gem of a restaurant! The service was kind, the atmosphere is quaint/personal, and the food is made with love! I asked for a veggie wrap(wasn't on the menu) the chef found veggies to MAKE A WRAP for me. I tell you, the staff care about their customers. If you are looking for a place to drink after first Friday festivities or if you are near the South Town area, Blue Star is the place to go. This brewery is next to the San Antonio Riverwalk and surrounded by hip restaurants and shops. Blue Star has a variety of beers from pilsner to sour and are very tasty. I went in after a long morning in the King William area and wanted a refreshing beer and food in my stomach. I ordered the Turkey Avocado BLT and a pilsner beer. My boyfriend ordered the Rueben Sandwich and the Southtown sour beer. My sandwich was okay, it wasn't outstanding but the fries were legit. If soft fries aren't your thing then you wont enjoy them but other than that the flavor is on point. I tried a bite or two (okay more like 6 bites) of the Rueben and it was fantastic. My beer was easy to drink and although sour beers aren't my thing, it might be good to some. Try this brewery out!! read more

Dropped by here on a Tuesday night for Jazz night. Band playing was the San Antonio Jazz Orchestra, pretty good music, the venue is the back room of the brewery so it does get loud but not bad at all. The brews were decent, tried the Wheathead which had more of an Ale taste and also tried the Spire Stout, while it did have a stout appearance and taste seemed a little watered down. Tried the fried mushroom as a starter, they were good a heavy breading on the line of a chicken fried steak, but still very enjoyable. Entree was the Turkey, avocado BLT with fries. The sandwich was good but nothing that made it stand out, disappointing were the fries; they were a old home style fry but I guess I ended up the the bottom of an old fry batch cause I had a lot of bits and pieces at the bottom of my serving. read more

Great place to check out their local offerings of brews! You can try one or try all of them in a great little atmosphere. They even have some outside seating when the weather permits. They are located right along the river walk in Southtown. You can walk or bike along the river if you don't want to take your car! They do flights of their beers so you can sample to your heart's delight! My favorite is their chicken fried chicken. It's a great comfort food meal when you just don't feel like cooking at home. Just like grandma used to make when you were little! Service is always great as is the food. My wife occasionally will get their nachos but typically we stick to the chicken fried chicken as it is that good. One day we'll need to venture out and try something else but hey...when it is good...why change up?! I'm sure their other food is just as good as this! read more

Short stop on a bar hopping journey to show some out of state friends around. They are big into nice or fancy or small brew beers. My husband had the Texican Lager. He liked it for a lager. While he prefers a Golden Ale, he found something he enjoyed. He felt there were a few things on the menu he would have been pleased with. I just had water because the previous beverages were potent. The bar tender was very accommodating to my break from imbibing. My BIL and our two friends the Flying Pig, Ladybug Lager, and Cowtown (respectively I think...) They were all pleased with the flavors and the menu options. We got there late so we didn't eat but the food menu looks great. The whole place was clean, including the restrooms. A few weeks ago, my girlfriend invited me out on the town for Live Jazz and I jumped at the opportunity to attend as I had recently fell in love with Live Bands in the Dallas area. I had passed Blue Star Brewing only once before and was unaware of the lack of parking spaces and unfortunately had to circle around the block a few times to find parking. Since the establishment is collocated with another restaurant, I would recommend you come early to snag a spot. My date and I entered the wrong establishment at first so look for the doors in the middle of the establishments to lead you into Blue Star Brewing and do not enter the establishment on the end. The place was packed with guests from several age categories and the Band was in full throttle when we arrived. These "Cats" (term used for Gentlemen in the night club scene during the 40's - 60's) were the real deal. I felt as if I had stepped into a Grand Orchestra seeing the trumpets, bass guitars, saxophones and other band members playing their instruments and the Best part was that the entire affair was FREE. Every Tuesday, a different band graces fans with their music and we had the pleasure of hearing the classic ballads of the San Antonio Jazz band. They performed well orchestrated solos and even allowed former students to grace the crowd with their tunes. As our group sipped on cocktails, my date and I sampled the Shrimp and Grits and an entrée of Salmon. My Shrimp and Grits arrived with some kicking Cajun seasoning and crunchy bits of bacon. This dish would have been 5 stars if it had arrived with just a little pinch of salt. I do understand some chefs allow patrons to add their own, but this Southern Belle knows salt is an ingredient that needs to simmer in a pot of Grits. The Cajun flavor helped the dish as I swirled my Cajun seasoning into the grits as I ate. My date enjoyed a plate of juicy salmon, roasted baby tomatoes and a bowl of grits. He wanted ya'll to know that he thoroughly enjoyed his meal but also agreed that his grits suffered from the lack of salt. All in all, this was an excellent affair and the crowd was definitely enjoying themselves. The band broke for a break and walked the room mingling with the guest. We slipped out a few hours into the final set and an older woman next to us laughed and said "Early Birds".. While I would have loved to dance into the late evening, the full belly and ride home prompted an early departure. I'll definitely return and highly recommend. Went to this restaurant fully expecting to have a great experience for our first time. Walked in with my pregnant wife ready for a good meal, we were hungry and it was Friday night in the trendy Southtown area of San Antonio. We were told it was self-seating, and sat outside on the patio area to enjoy the evening weather. First worrying sign was that it was prime time in a prime location and the restaurant was only about 20% full. I was also disappointed to see that the metal tables on the patio were pretty dirty. The waitress was nice, though she seemed a bit flustered keeping track of her tables. I ordered a mule and my wife got a "Mexican" cola, though my mule was rather bland both in taste and presentation, and my wife's cola was served in a regular plastic mug and tasted just like flat regular coke. We were then served our starter of pulled pork fries, and I was unimpressed with the soggy, flavorless brown fries that were only slightly warm, saturated with cheese sauce and unimpressive pulled pork. The real disappointment was the main course. My wife got a pulled pork sandwich, though the bottom bun was soaked with juices and soggy, while the pork itself was dry and cold. The fries were again soggy and flavorless. My plate was a mushroom Swiss burger and garlic fries on the side, and it wasn't any better. The bottom bun of my burger was soggy and the top bun was too dry. They topped the patty with little mushroom, and the two cheese slices on top of that mushroom weren't fully melted. I asked for my burger cooked medium, and the meat was grey all the way through, very clearly cooked well-done. The meat was also bland, cold, and tasted unseasoned. The "pickles" served on the side were large cucumber slices that seemed like they had only been pickled for an hour, very sad. The lettuce was cut into annoyingly thing strips looking more like the bed for a lazy salad, and it was mostly white with little green. The fries were the worst, again brown but soggy and cold, while the minced garlic topping the fries seemed straight out of the jar. The uncooked garlic chunks were so acrid and sharp in flavor that it made the fries unbearable to eat unless I picked off every minced piece. I informed the server of how disappointing the meal was and explained why, and elaborated that while the poor food was not her fault, I instructed her to inform the cook of the issues. Judging by the other bad reviews on here, it seems as if management does not read this crucial feedback, and that is a shame. While this establishment could have untold potential, it's refusal to make radical changes in order to avert a sharp downfall will lead to its demise. This is by far the worst American restaurant my wife and I have tried in San Antonio, which has much better locations with good brews and eats to spend your money at. Don't bother with this establishment, and I will be here again when a new restaurant inevitably takes its place. read more

Pretty decent food and good spot to have new draft beers. The interior is really cool where it is an actual brewery and the upper level with bicycles hanging all over. We had to try the beer sampler where there are 12 different kind of beers. You get 4oz of each. A good majority are IPAs and pale ale. They usually have two seasonal beers and one sangria as part of the tasting as well. I need to come back to try their beer cocktails. With our beers we had brisket tacos and bacon Mac and cheese. The brisket was tender and moist with a savory taste. Mac and cheese was a little watery but still good. First time at this restaurant, first impression you are walking into a brewery place. The different types of beers that are offered are listed at the front of the restaurant. The menu was very limited not sure if it was because it was a Sunday and considered " brunch Hour". My husband had the bacon Swiss burger made with grass fed beef with garlic parsley fries. Flavor was good and the fries were seasoned right not too much garlic. I ordered the chicken fried steak and in my opinion it was lacking flavor. I have had better chicken fried steak elsewhere. Really enjoyed the beer here! Brewed onsite, very fresh. I would come back here just for the beer. But the food was good, too, the service was good, and the people were nice. We were there on a weeknight so it was not too crowded or loud. The Riverwalk passes right outside of the restaurant so we walked down from our hotel downtown. Very pleasant walk; great to see a city invest in this sort of thing. We would have walked back after dinner, but it was raining so we called Uber. read more

Has gone downhill. Used to be a good lunch spot and had not been in months but no longer an option at least for food. We started with queso and salsa. The chips are good and queso decent. The salsa was a weird watery mess. I asked waiter if something wrong with this salsa and for a new order. He said that is their new recipe. Was a cup of water with some tomato bits in it. We ran out of time to eat our lunch because waiter said they had a larger party in back kitchen was handling. They could have told us that when ordering so would not have wasted our lunch hour. Stopped by this restaurant/ brewery on a Saturday afternoon after riding my bike through Southtown. It wasn't very busy but there was people. There was about 3-4 hosts/ waiters at the podium and only one acknowledged me. I stated I was going to the bar and took a seat. The bar tender was in the corner chatting it up with another employee and took several minutes to acknowledge me and take my order. I ordered my beer and took it to the patio. The door on the right entrance is locked (fire code violation?) but did not have a sign. The 3-4 hosts just stood there looking at me trying to open the door... until one finally noticed it was Locked and needed to unlock it during business hours. The food menu looked mediocre, nothing that caught my attention. With as many other places to eat and drink at the Blue Star Complex, I expected the service here to be far better. read more

Our table had 2 checks and both were paid with the same bill. Our waitress, YVONNE, only brought out change ($2) for 1 check and the other ($12) was not brought out. My boyfriend decided to go to the register to explain that both checks were paid with the same bill and we only got 1 back. She refused to understand or help us solve the issue, so I went over to explain to her once more. She was very rude and said she will find the receipt to find us the "extra dollar". Clearly the difference in the amount of change between 2 checks wasn't just a dollar, if it was then I wouldn't have even cared. I tried to ask her what did she mean the extra dollar??? Yvonne went on and screamed in my face "CHANGE! JEEZ!" rolled her eyes and took off. She clearly does not value money at all as $10 was just an extra dollar to her. From the time we arrived, we were greeted with kindness and asked to sit wherever we wanted and they would send our server over. Carlos arrived shortly after and we ordered an IPA and chamoy margarita. Both were delicious! We ordered the pretzels with beer cheese, which were also very good. For lunch, we had the Turkey melt with fries and briscuit tacos, again, very good. We sat outside. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was also very nice. Great food and great choices of beer. The waitress suggested Pork Pie and my wife tried it and loved it. I had a Bacon cheeseburger and it was fantastic. The beers are great. I had a king William that has a farm house taste and packs a good bite. The gentleman at the door was very nice and checked on us to make sure we had everything we wanted.
