Blue Star is an unassuming hole in the wall restaurant that is an absolute gem for the lower east side here in Milwaukee. While they are a fairly small and cramped restaurant (would not recommend for large groups), the food here is so uniquely flavorful and delicious. I had never eaten or even thought to try Somalian cuisine and it is so nice that I get the opportunity to do so with this amazing restaurant located just down the street. A friend recommended Blue Star, and we decided to give it a try while we were hungry and in the area. It was a small, carry-out style restaurant with a few tables to sit at. We talked to the owner and explained that it was our first visit, to which he was genuinely excited we chose his restaurant. He briefly explained the menu and the top-sellers. Having never tried Somali food before, I opted for a more conservative dish-- the chicken and basmati rise. While we were waiting, the owner explained that he moved here from Somalia 37 years ago. He was a very nice guy, and I'm glad we were able to support his business. Back to the food, which was great tasting and at an excellent price for the amount they give you (platter is a HUGE portion). The chicken was very well-flavored atop the basmati rice with peppers, onions, potatoes and some raisins, which I'm not normally a fan of. All of the flavors blended together nicely. They also included two sauces, and my favorite was the Somali green sauce. After some research, it turns out to be a mixture of like, garlic, Serrano peppers, and some more ingredients. It had a good flavor and kick to it, but nothing unbearable. Overall, I'd definetly recommend the place, but I'd do it as a take-out order. My dish was good, but I will be trying something a bit more adventurous on my next visit. read more

The sambusas are pretty good, and FILLED with meat. But the star of the show here was the goat plate. My friend and I both agreed that it was very tasty, and it is a HUGE portion. The goat is so tender, it is falling off the bone. On that note, the dish comes with bone-in meat that is traditional and adds flavor. If you're not prepared for that, this is not the place for you. Overall, it ain't fancy (water was served in styrofoam cups, as were our dishes), but it does the job right! Don't let the hole-in-the-wall vibe fool you. This place is a gem. P.S. Blue star is everything I love about restaurants. The shop is owned by a family, with the shop owners welcoming you and taking your orders. The food arrives quickly and is so delicious (and huge in portion-definitely enough for lunch the next day). It's a cozy restaurant if you want to dine in and catch up with a friend, but most people seem order there or call ahead for to-go orders. And, if you aren't Somali yourself, then you get to try a different and delicious cuisine. You just can't go wrong. The lamb, beef, salmon, and tilapia are all great. The meats are all tender and there was only one time (of the many times I've been here) that the beef was a bit overcooked. The platter pairing with rice (w/ raisins!), veggies, mini salad, yogurt, and the green hot sauce is perfectly balanced. You can also order the platters with various other types of carbs, and I really liked the crepes. They're a bit thicker than a French crepe (more like a thin pancake) and made with eggs. You only get a couple with the platter order, so it wasn't really enough to go with the large amount of meat/veggies. If you want to try the crepes, I'd get a side of them with a platter with rice. I've either somehow missed seeing the kay-kay on the menu or they haven't had it when I've been there, but that's definitely what I'll try next time. The sambusas are great and although similar in form, are seasoned quite differently than Indian samosas. I prefer the potato or beef sambusas, as the chicken was a bit dry. I've never had the sandwiches, but it seems like a lot of people order them. ***Parking: It's kind of difficult to find parking in the area, but there is designated customer parking for Blue Star and the other shops in the cluster. I was so excited to try Blue Star cafe. I have been waiting for it for a very long time but I did not think it lived up to the hype of all the other reviewers. This could also be a "me" thing because I got the goat and did not love all of the bones I had to pick around. Maybe I should have tried something else. Somtimes you make plans, something goes slightly wrong and you change them, and you're better off for it. I had planned on doing something else for lunch, missed a bus, took the circuitous route once I got to the right neighborhood, ended up walking by Blue Star and... well, plans changed. It was a not-busy time on a weekday; only a handful of customers trickled in and out the whole time I was there. I ordered the salmon plate and was told there was a 15-minute wait because it was being cooked to order. Not a problem, but I was hungry, so I ordered one of the sambusas on display on the counter. It was another good decision. The only other sambusas I've had were at the Milwaukee Public Market, and there's nothing wrong with those, but this was better. It seemed fresher, and there were more vegetables in the filling. The tangy green sauce was a perfect accompaniment, and also to my entree. I had questioned my decision to get the salmon only because the other patrons' beef and goat platters looked so good, but the fish itself was cooked perfectly, moist, with a curry-like spice that melded well with the rice, onions, potatoes, and raisins it came with. I even thought the simple little salad, dressed with what was probably olive oil and lemon juice, added a refreshing zing to the meal. Portions are substantial, but I finished mine. My lunch was on point!. This spot is run by a family so patience is needed as the wait time might be a while, its totally worth it. I ordered the Chicken platter and a Chicken sandwich. I also had a couple of pure watermelon juices. The platter includes 1 or a combo of meet and rice or noodles ect. It comes with a side of green hot sauce and its topped with fried potatoes onions and sweet peppers. Sounds kinda off but its on point! The food itself was wonderful and plentiful! Was walking by and saw this was a unique looking restaurant, definitely glad I stopped in. I was in a rush so I just ordered the goat soup and a dessert. I had never had goat meat before, and wanted to try something new. Nice and tender meat in a flavorful broth. The dessert was basically cornbread prepared like baklava with a sweet honey sauce and a nice almond flavor. I love their hospitality and patience. I ordered a Chicken Sambusa for an appetizer. It's a fried dumpling that contains, Cilantro, Shredded Chicken, Onions, Peas, Roasted Corn, and some type of colander and turmeric for spice and flavor. WHOA, party inside the mouth! And then for the Entree, I had Grilled Curry Goat, with Basmati Jasmine Safron Rice, alongside a cucumber salad and the BEST FRESH MANGO JUICE ever!!! The entire meal was like 13 dollars. Which is cheap considering the amount of food you get. This place needs much attention, because they are literally great cooks and all in all great people. There were 3 of us and we ordered: Chicken sambusas (like a samosa but different flavor); Goat platter - bone-in goat meat on top of a bed of basmati rice with cubes potatoes, onions and raisins - make sure to squeeze the lemon juice all over because it brings out the flavors even more and then top with green chutney and yogurt ($9) Chicken suqar - chicken sandwich, chicken pieces that were tender and so tasty, definitely put some chutney on this ($6) Veggie platter - corn, green beans, spinach, dived carrots, cubes potatoes on a bed of basmati rice ($9) I LOVED the sandwich. The chicken was so tender. I would get a chicken platter next time (not a fan of goat). Got a mango smoothie and it tasted fresh with maybe a little bit of sugar added. (For all of this it was $39). Blue Star Cafe is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to grab a bite in the entire Milwaukee area. First things first, this is a hole-in-the-wall joint, so don't be expecting lavish interiors or amazing ambiance (tip: they do to-go orders). What you will get is good portions of delicious Somali food for affordable prices. I had the chicken sambusa ($1.50) and the goat kay-kay ($9.00). Everything was delicious. The sambusa was crisp on the outside and savory on the inside, and generously-sized. The goat kay-kay though. That was fantastic. The kay-kay is this interesting slightly doughy yet crispy on the outside flatbread that mixed very well with the sauteed green peppers, onions, and the fried potatoes. The goat was cooked to perfection. It basically fell apart in my mouth. Their spicy green hot sauce added a nice extra dimension to the dish, if you're looking for it. My only change would be to hold the sun-dried raisins. They threw off the dish a little bit. However, this was an incredible meal, quickly prepared, for a reasonable price. Come here! I have never tried Somali food before, so I didn't know what to expect. But the concept of the restaurant made it perfectly easy to order even without knowing anything about the cuisine. I chose chicken as my meat on the base of basmati rice and the rest of the condiments was fixed. The chicken was seasoned with the most flavorful blend of spices, of which I think it had cumin, cardamom, coriander, peppercorns, cloves, probably cinnamon, and who knows what else, on a bed of flavorful rice with sauteed red peppers and onions. Eat here! This food is so amazing and is an incredible price. I get the plate with salmon and basmati rice every time and love it so much. Their hummus is the best I've ever had (and I love hummus and try it wherever I can) and is served with yummy warm pitas. The chai is good and so are their samosas, but my every-time order is the plate and hummus. It's a small operation and the dad is the chief "waiter" so it feels very family style. Yes the place is not fancy and can be a little muggy and humid inside, but for the food and prices, it is worth it every time. I tried the beef and Chicken sambosas, they were great. Much better than the greasy Indian versions. The platters, delicious and healthy portions of meat and rice.
