I stopped by Blue Star Cafe late in the afternoon. I have never had Somalian food; the man at the register was very kind and helpful explaining their menu to me. I was the only customer at that time and my food was ready to go in about 5 minutes. I ordered the goat platter with rice. The seasoning was hearty and the braised goat meat was so tender and not gamey tasting. The side of green chili sauce was spicy and delicious. The portion was huge; I'll get to enjoy the rest tomorrow for lunch! My only regret? I wish I had eaten there so I could have told them how much I liked the dish. Heaven in Wisconsin. Finally made it after wanting to check it out for a looooong time. Ordered chicken and tilapia platter and 2 veggie sambosas. It's unlike anything I've ever had in my life and I have had some amazing stuff. Amazingly fresh and fragrant basmati rice and perfectly grilled tilapia. Huge portions. The lady that brought my food was super sweet and the gentleman who was around was very nice. Don't go if you are looking for fancy decor and drinks. Go if you truely enjoy different cuisines and are okay with mom and pop style restaurants. I can't wait to go back. read more

I was dragged here against my will a few weeks ago, as I'm not a huge sandwich fan, and holy crap. This place is amazing. I've come back two times since then, and every time it's been exactly what I needed. If you find yourself craving Subway, Jimmy Johns, or Philly Way, get your shit together, and check this place out. It's not greasy, and their steak sandwich is perfectly seasoned.It's also the only place I know where you can get guava juice, and it's only a buck a bottle. The only downside is that they haven't had the salmon available when I went in, and I REALLY want to try it. The location is right off Farwell and Brady, and it's never busy as it's primarily a takeout place. The owner is amazingly friendly, and will talk to you while you're waiting if you start a conversation. There isn't a lot of decoration to speak of, it's pretty bare-bones, but don't let that turn you away, it's a real hidden gem. If it lasts long enough, it definitely has the potential to be an anchor for quick food on the east side. I've only had their sandwiches so far, but I plan on going back sometime for one of their plates. I did try a bite of my friends goat dish, and it was perfect. I'm genuinely looking forward to being hungry enough to order and eat the entire plate. The portions are very generous, and the flavor is great. Definitely worth every penny. It's a perfect food for grabbing on the way home, slathering yourself into a pair of old sweats, and watching a 4 hour long Netflix session and passing out halfway through. read more

You just kind of said it to be rude because you were the one who had to go pick up dinner in the first place.... this didn't really happen I'm just trying to pass the time here, but what I'm saying is- oooop... food is ready. Gotta run. YES!! this place is amazing. It's cheap, delicious, unique, and the value is insane. Simply awesome. We eat- in, ordered Sambusas, Stewed Goat Platter, and Steak sandwich. All of them are amazing. The rice is amazingly flavorful, goat is mild and tender, steak is seasoned just right, and the green hot sauce is awesome. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and not bothersome. I have to give them prop for the goat . Blue Star 's goat stew is cooked just right. The goat is mild (not gamy or have that goat smell). You would have to cook and seasoned goat just right to get rid of the gaminess. I would definitely recommend this place. The only thing I would recommend: don't wear nice clothes to eat in - or your clothes will smell like that place all day.... although it keep you hungry for more.. I am glad this cafe is open. I stopped in for a sandwich to go on a frigid day where I was being given a tour of Milwaukee and all I wanted to do was sit in the heated car and look at it from a distance, rather than subjecting myself to any of the elements. Blue Star was spartan but warm. The sandwich only took about ten minutes to make, and I was brought a steaming hot mug of chai to warm my hands as I waited. (It was too sweet, but it did the trick.) My Somali steak sandwich came with the requisite fiery green sauce - not quite enough of it to sate my spicy tooth, though. The sandwich itself was well-proportioned and the meat tender. I hardly ever eat steak because unless it's served in a high-end restaurant at high-end prices (or in a Vietnamese dive) it tends to come out more like shoe-leather. This was not the case here. Without the green sauce, the sandwich would have been good, but not noticeably Somali. With it, it shone. Just could've used a bit more. read more

I drew the short stick it turned out for platters on a take out order. As the Somali beef and chicken where taken, I went with goat stew. Not that they aren't good goat stewers, but much of it had silver skin on (which I'm really not a fan of) a,nd a bunch of small chopped up bones in it. The chicken and beef had no such issues and great flavor. The green chili paste had a nice surprising kick, but something akin to a green pepper taste in it that stops me from a whole hearted endorsement. The beef sambusas are an item I WILL walk in and pickup anytime I'm going down Farwell. $1.50 of awesomeness! Other items require a wait. I've never had Somalian food before so I can't attest to the authenticity. But what I did have was pretty darn tasty and a great value. The place isn't much inside so it's more of a carryout restaurant. I had the beef plate (I forget the official name) with basmati rice and it was delicious. Seasoned strips of beef, onions, green peppers, and potatoes sit atop a bed of basmati rice. As others have stated on previous reviews the rice is awesome. The raisins add a great sweetness to everything. The green condiment sauce they give you adds the perfect amount of heat. I only wish they gave you more of it. My only complaint would be that some of the pieces of beef were very gristly. I'm not expecting filet mignon for a $9 platter, but a couple of the pieces were pretty nasty when I bit into them. This place will definitely be high up on my list of carryout options on the Eastside. I hope they can stay in business because the location can be tough to find on a busy one way street if you're not familiar with the area. read more

This is exactly what I was looking for during my visit to Milwaukee. A small hole-in-the-wall restaurant, located just off Brady Street, with super delicious ethnic food. The food is mainly Somali, which is a first for me. I asked for recommendations, the lady at the counter insisted I try the goat platter with rice. The restaurant was packed during Thanksgiving weekend so it took a little while to prepare, but definitely worth the wait, every single bite, delicious! This was my first time having Somali food and the bar has been set very high! I started out with a beef sambusa. The pastry shell was perfectly crisp yet soft and the filling inside was incredibly flavorful. To be honest, while I recognized the meat and veggies inside, I have no idea what seasonings/spices produced the wonderful flavors I experienced. Regardless, I quickly ordered a chicken sambusa and was again overwhelmed by how good it was. I then got the chicken platter which was equally excellent- and huge. The portion size here is unreal. My platter had onions, peppers, raisins (so good!) and about three chickens worth of chicken. The rice was perfectly cooked and the little side sauce was sort of tart and added some welcome moisture. I also want to emphasize how cheap everything was. My whole meal came out to $12, but I would have ordered less if I knew how big and filling the food was.
