This is so Austin and I love it Our movie started at 7 and we arrived around 6:40, which was perfect timing. We parked on the front row and brought our own snacks and beverages. There is a bathroom if needed and everyone abided by the rules and kept their lights off. Great way to end Valentines Day. I did take a star away as I wish the screen was a little bigger and there was also a few screen interruptions which I figured was due to the wind. I'll definitely do it again. read more

-1 purchased tickets showed up to a empty lot contacted every customer service method I could. Wouldn't recommend anyone to waste their time or money on this bootleg movie company. Also going to leave the attached photo. This company surely won't be around 15 years from now and it's going to be the customer service that ends them. Update: refund has been processed after threats to report them to the BBB and federal trade commission, their customer service is still shitty. When you try to call and hit 9 ( to speak with someone) it hangs up not sure if that's how it's supposed to work? but it would be nice if there was a message that said no one is available to take your call. I left about 10 different comments on their Instagram posts and got ignored because their were later posts made after my comments. Supposedly there were issues due to weather and they forgot to reach out to the customers who purchased with fandango (which is what pops up to buy tickets) because contact details aren't provided through that platform. How difficult would it have been to post a message to their IG stating they wouldn't be able to show any movies that weekend? I mean they were posting everything else. Even with the offer of a free movie I wouldn't waste my time with the companies. I love this place! It's so cute and a great way to have a movie experience. We saw Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and I'm glad we saw it here than at a regular theater, gave the movie a little something extra special. Definitely not a place to go all the time since the pricing is higher than typical for two people, but absolutely wonderful for an extra treat. Staff is right at the entrance and they were super friendly and helpful and got us situated right away. We weren't the first ones there, so we had to park behind some other cars, but that was totally fine. All the cars in front of us were small enough to not be a problem, and we were in a little Prius. A car that showed up just before the show started took a while to turn their headlights off, which was annoying, but a staff member got them together early enough to not terribly impact our experience. Such a unique movie theater experience! I have been to this location multiple times around sunset and it's always gorgeous around that time surrounded by the downtown high rises. The staff is friendly and helpful and the movie quality is decent. I haven't been to many drive-ins in general, but I usually get the vibe that they're crowded and noisy. This location is small and usually not too busy, being in your car listening to the movie audio come out of the radio really makes it seem like you and your company are the only people there. The audio sometimes has difficulty, but the staff will try to accommodate as much as possible and have even given us free tickets to another movie when the audio was busted for a few minutes! Super cute date night and just an interesting and personal experience overall. Wouldn't come for every movie but every now and again is always a treat! read more

Drive-in... COMEDY! In a pivot as good as any, Blue Starlite has expanded their drive-in offerings to include live stand up. It's clever and somehow works, even though, you do, indeed, stay in your car. The three comedians I saw this past Sat were a hoot and a half. More impressive was the fact that they essentially do their set to a silent audience - you flash your lights in place of laughter! They stand on a ladder (sweating) in front of a handful of 'mobiles and tell jokes into a mic while we all listen via our radios inside the comfort of our cars with the A/C, snacks, and beverages! For $30ish dollars for two people in one car (that includes a candy and popcorn), it might be my fave outside of the house activity that has resulted from COVID creativity. My boyfriend and I came here on a date and I LOVED IT! The check-in process was super fast. The drive in is on top of a parking garage in downtown Austin. After you go up 6 floors, the top floor has two screens. I got to see a double feature of X and Pearl. I brought my own snacks but they do have snacks you can buy on the spot. I did end up purchasing a bag of popcorn, cherry coke and a coke. Next time I will definitely bring a blanket and more snacks! But I will be coming back for sure! read more

I actually went to the blue starlight on 300 San Antonio St. in downtown Austin but that one doesn't appear on Yelp so reviewing it here. It's a very cute idea, and there are 2 screens for movies showing at a time. The screens are not huge, they're about the size of a projector screen in a typical classroom. But it's big enough that you can see just fine. You hear the audio by tuning into a radio station that the folks tell you on arrival, and the ticket purchase comes with complimentary candy or popcorn. The movie area itself is at the top of a parking garage so you have to circle a bit to get up there and find it but it was easy to spot afterward. There were about 6-7 other cars there the night we went, they ask everyone to turn off their headlights and you watch like that from the car. We had a very nice time and loved our movie ("Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind"). Would def recommend going as a date option or just for fun with friends :) read more

This place is adorable. We went to a walk-in movie, a smaller screen behind the drive-in portion. It's all outside in the woods and there were tons of cute strings of lights. There were also spooky decorations which they kept up for Friday the Thirteenth, presumably. We saw Jason Lives aka Friday the 13th VI (six). We were outside, in the woods, watching a movie about people getting murdered in the woods. As if that wasn't fun enough, there was a smoke machine, too, which seemed timed to start right before someone got murdered. It was really fun. Admission includes candy, popcorn, and a drink. They're taking social distancing seriously. You can text with concerns, order additional concessions on the website for contactless payment. They also direct traffic well. A really cool experience overall experience. We need one of this in Buffalo. read more

I would not reccomend this drive in. We saw "Cabin Fever" in the woods. Great concept, poorly executed. I understand with COVID things are a bit wonky right now. Our show was initially cancelled and was a hassle to get in contact with them to figure out when the show would rescheduled. I can understand this. When we got to the drive in (an hour early to make sure that there was no complication with our ticket), we were rudely greeted by the managment and felt relatively unwelcomed. Concessions were a joke. Popcorn was brought into the establishment in thin bags on the flatbed of a truck (Super unsanitary). The first round of concessions was well priced. For $30 we got 2 tickets, 2 boxes of candy, 2 warm cans of soda and a bag of this unsanitary popcorn. After this, the warm cans of soda were $3.50 each. Highway robbery. The setting of the movie was pretty cool though. Seeing a movie about camping in the woods IN the woods is pretty hard to beat. I would reccomend it. However, the movie shouldnt be played off of a streaming service on a cell phone using best buy prosumer electronics where it will shut off half way through the movie, and customers need to find a worker to come fix it... I was even more shocked when I found out my "drive-in" movie was actually not a drive in and I had to sit outside. How is that a drive-in? This drive-in theater is pretty cool and I love its charm. I was pretty bummed to learn that this location is closing down. When I received news that they were extending their run by showing Valentines Day themed movies, I knew I had to take advantage of this time to see a movie. I am a big fan of the movie Sixteen Candles with Molly Ringwald so I came in on a Tuesday night. I made sure I bought my tickets in advance. They played Mannequin then Sixteen Candles. As soon as I pulled in (I was a bit early), I was greeted by a passing car who instructed me on how to come in. I then waited by the neon blue light to show my tickets. It's so convenient that you can show your tickets on your phone. That's always a plus in my book! They will direct you to a slot based on availability and size of your vehicle. We got to park right in front. Yea! We bought a concession package that came with popcorn and a box of candy so we walked to the trailer to pick up our items. You are able to bring in your own food and beverages as well. The guys who work here are very helpful. The speakers are pretty loud right up front. I still wanted to have my radio on just to totally get into it since I had all the windows up. The vintage clips before the movie started were awesome! I loved the clip of Violet giving Charlie Brown a day old valentine and how Schroeder was so upset by it. Memories! The whole experience was pretty awesome. I have not watched a movie at the drive-in so I made sure I took advantage of this opportunity. I missed the chance so many times so I did not want to miss this. Fantastic! I had originally planned to attend monster movies here during last October, but a change in ability to attend prevented me from watching monster movies galore. I was crushed. Last night made up for everything. Scrambling to the car, speaker on, full of hot dogs, on comes the double feature of two of my very favorite films, Idiocracy and Escape From New York. I can basically recite every line from Escape, but it had been awhile for Idiocracy. This is truely an Austin experience. While it is hard to find in the dark so use a GPS. They are going to move, and I will be following them to their new location, no matter where that is. read more

This place is so cute and intimate. We saw a movie in their forest location. A couple of suggestions for when you do outside seating. 1. It should be warned to bring/wear bug spray. Or even better have their space be treated. I'm not a big fan of bugs and was paranoid that a bug could easily get in my drink AND was bit numerously by mosquitos. It was a lot fun to be in a deeper wooded setting as an owl flew overhead before the show and was gorgeous. I was just super uncomfortable with all the bugs. 2. Bring something to wipe the tables down. They're not wiped down beforehand. Maybe after the last showing but certainly not before you sit down. 3. Check the weather but always bring a blanket and hot chocolate in a thermos. 4. We ordered our food when we arrived but it took nearly an hour to arrive and was cold. Wasn't sure if there was a lack of communication when food was ready. The dessert donut was warm though. Also mentioning the menu. I think it's not clear at this location if you order dinner and a movie it's the full menu (so hamburgers instead of only hotdogs). I wish when purchasing tickets on the forest screen it's a lot clearer of what is to be served. Simply just copy and paste a specific menu when advertising. Probably would be best to bring several snacks while waiting for your food. 5. I had to run to the bathroom in the middle of the show and it was confusing path. There's several string lights but in the dark it looks like you go to a dead end but instead have to duck underneath a tarp and walk underneath the drive in screen. I had to use my phone to figure out more of my path. It would be better if the pathway lights could be a little clearer. Maybe have a color pattern? Red means out this way to the bathroom? Or maybe all pathways be the same color? The blue middle lights flickered on and off in a pattern all night and were highly distracting during the movie. Maybe just leave them on rather than flicker. It sounds like I'm complaining but I hope this more of constructive criticism. I suffer with "new place anxiety"and felt I wasn't prepared. My partner and I enjoyed ourselves but we'll definitely be a bit more prepared if we sit outside again. I'm hoping someone will read this and take the necessary measure so they're night is more enjoyable. read more

This is a really neat place. I was too young to remember the last time I was at a drive in. They've got a snack bar with an assortment of goodies to munch on while enjoying a movie. It's very old school. They've got speakers that you can hang in your window. The 2 I tried didn't work though. They've got an option where you can tune your radio to a certain station and hear the movie that way as well. The concession worker and projector attendant were so nice and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. They will be moving to Buda soon and I'm sure I'll still visit them cause this was a real treat! read more

Still awesome, even in its new digs. Decided to write an update to my original review since the Blue Starlite has moved to just outside the southern border of the Austin city limits. I actually like the new locale even better as it's more 'countrified' and is downright pretty. Went to see 'Blade Runner' and was not disappointed in the personable staff or the quality of the movie. In fact, the bathrooms have been upgraded from port-a-potties to a rather nice and well ventilated port-a-trailer. ;-) As before, the only cautionary note I have is that you are outdoors, and out of courtesy you shouldn't be leaving your car engine on during the movie. That means no air conditioning, which I'm OK with this for most of the year (just leave the window down). read more

We were disappointed with the size of the screen, it was really small and the best option to park, being the middle, has the projector, so you couldn't see if you parked behind it. The screen was pretty low so the cars parked in front of us blocked the bottom of the screen. It's a bummer because you pay a fee for the car and then $15 per extra person in the car... kind of steep for not the best viewing experience. read more

This was my first Drive-In Movie experience EVER. When I saw they were having a double feature of The Goonies and The Never Ending Story it was a no brainer. Two great movies from my childhood. We weren't sure what to expect but it turned out to be a really cute and kitschy place. There are decorations all around the front as you head towards the big screen in back. There is a concession stand trailer and a portable air conditioned restroom. They sell all of the necessary candies, sodas, and even a s'mores kit. The owner talked to us a couple of times and he was super friendly and enthusiastic about the place and thanked us for coming. Very nice and welcoming place. We went for Valentine's Day last night and there were some issues. 1. The screen was really dirty (picture attached). Seems like an easy enough thing to fix.. just wash it off! If we're going to pay $50 for a movie, al least take the time to make sure your screen is acceptable. 2. At 2pm, day of the show, they notified us that the movie time was changed from 7 to 6. This was an issue for us because we both work. So, instead of having time for dinner before the show we had to request to leave work early, rush home and rush to the show. 3. The screen deflated half way through the show. They fixed it within 5 minutes.. but COME ON... you have one job... read more

Would not recommend. We bought tickets to the Batman movie which was showing in a parking deck in downtown Austin. The movie started at 7:00, where cars were taking up 2 parking spots for their 1 vehicle so we were stuck in the back row of the parking deck. The 360 view of the city is nice but the lights from the city cause the particularly small screen to be extremely dark and hard to see. I would have expected a much larger screen. Blue Starlite was such a wonderful oasis such a low time. I moved to Austin completely sight-unseen and KNEW there had to be something else out there other than awesome food. Because my waistline was starting to see the effects of the unlimited supply of breakfast tacos, lunch tacos, $2 Tuesday tacos, snack tacos, dessert tacos. If you cut me open, I'd bleed tacos. Austin's great. Don't get me wrong. I love the epicurean adventures I set forth in Austin. But sometimes, you just need to do something other than stuff your face and sip $11 cocktails. So, in swoops Blue Starlite. As Alfred Hitchcock's greatest groupie, (if that's actually a thing) I saw they were playing a double feature one evening. Non negotiable, I was going. The theatre is tucked away off of Mueller and though I've been here a handful of times, I almost miss the turn in every time. I feel like this may be part of the charm. A treasure off of the beaten path. Blue Starlite's staff has always been courteous and helpful. You can tell they totally buy into the urban, trendiness of this unique spot. They always have such awesome selections. Just over the Christmas holiday, we gathered up my friends for my birthday and cuddled in the bed of my friend's truck with cheese, beer, homemade popcorn and a little bit of Die Hard. Anyone who doesn't believe Die Hard is a fantabulous Christmas movie can go kick rocks. If I could make a recommendation, don't expect to cozy up during one of their summer showings. We all know Texas heat is borderline offensive and it doesn't ease up along with the setting sun. So, imagine. You've got your car off, windows down and Janet Leigh cruising down the west coast highway on the big screen during Psycho and all you can do is wipe the sweat off your brow. Not because this is the intense part of Psycho where she is running away with the money in the rain, but because there is no air flow. It can get a little miserable in the summer time watching movies at the drive in. Pack a travel fan and post it on your dash, perhaps. Other than that, I highly recommend this place. You can actually reserve it for a private event, which is kind of sort of amazing and the best present anyone could give me (hint, hint). read more

Got to check out Starlite's new digs last weekend at a private charity event. That's how I fight cancer, btw, by going to the drive in and/or shooting big guns, thanks to the fundraising genius of Karen B. It's a tough fight, but I'm up to it. And, while I loved the feeling of having the drive in all to myself, I woulda liked to have seen more folks out there fighting cancer....not mentioning names but cougheveryonereadingthisbutMelissaAandHeatherFcough.... Guilt trip aside, I'm on the fence about this new place. It's difficult to find first off. The actual address will lead you into the Austin Movie Studios lot but you gotta go a bit farther east on 51st and turn in right before the water tower. There are fancy handmade poster signs to lead the way. Second, as Melissa A said upon arrival, it's like "surface of the moon" desolate. Just a massive concrete parking lot with an inflatable screen popping up like the monolith in "2001 Space Odyssey". It's fairly desolate, esp with a small crowd, ahem. I don't know if it was because this was a smaller private event, but the other location had some funky cute vintage airline seats and airplane/truck kiddie seats (not to mention actual indoor bathrooms). This one has nothing but the old time speakers and on this evening one food truck and another Starlite concession truck. I would love to see this place with more food trucks and fun decoration. These days, anybody can put up an inflatable screen. They do it at the pools, parks and trailers around town. I don't see how Blue Starlite can compete without some Austin weird and some food. On the up side, I had a great time here. We had us a gorgeous sunset, unencumbered by trees and buildings, and a nice light breeze followed by a full moon, filling me with good feelings of nostalgia and the desire to get nekkid, but maybe that's just me. A breeze and full moon always has that affect on me...add wine and ..........maybe I was a werewolf in another life. I'll have to return here on a "regular" nite to see if it's any different, or better yet, rent it out for a private clothing optional viewing...maybe of The Howling. This deserves an update: For one, they moved from their original location to a super sneaky spot off E 51st, just east of the HEB at Mueller. It's kind of hard to find at night, but just look for the signs. They are in a pretty industrial area. You can also see downtown from just sitting there viewing the screen. Prices are still totally reasonable. They still offer chairs if you want to get there early and not sit in your car, like a legit drive-in. You can also bring your own chairs. I've actually never sat in the car to watch a movie, even when it was in the 30s and we were freezing our nalgas off while enjoying THREE Harry Potter movies back to back to back. I love Blue Starlite, they are always offering great movies and fun themed nights! Unfortunately, I think I only saw port-a-potties this last time. The sound is much better these days, and parking isn't a nightmare like it was when they were on the east side. They have a food cart and other vendors selling collectibles and drinks. Still BYOB, yay! So glad these guys have been able to stay open through all the crazy growth since they first opened. Keep on, keepin' on! read more

Note: Seasonal closing is from July 27 until August 29. I found out they were showing 2001: A Space Odyssey on their last night before closing down for the season so I grabbed my puppy, a blanket and pillow and said lets go enjoy ourselves with a long trippy movie. It is not hard to find at all arriving from I-35. You will need to go East on 51st all the way to the water tower. Turn right before the tower itself and follow the signs. The price is a little steep if you are going alone..or with your dog, but the experience was awesome. It was $20 for a car and that is good for 2 people if I am not mistaken. $5 per additional person after that. Their website is really good at explaining the current fees and feature presentations. The last time I had gone to a drive in was in my hometown in South Texas when I was probably 5. It felt so cool to park my truck in reverse, lower the tailgate and make myself comfy with some beverages I brought from home. You just turn your radio to FM 94.1 and set the volume. The screen is big enough that you really don't feel like you are missing out if you are towards the last lines of vehicles. I opted to have my truck with the other vehicles rather than pay only $10 for parking towards the side and then using the area in front of the screen whether on lawn chairs or a blanket. They are pretty cool about letting you move your vehicle around a bit until you get an unobstructed view. I didn't partake in their snacks or drinks since I brought my own and that is a great thing about a drive-in. Bring whatever you like. Some have complained about the stuff sold there, but that is their own fault for wanting to treat it like a regular theater that serves you everything. Bring it. The HEB is like 2 minutes away. They even have a great cafe with hot food there. No need to cry about what this place offers or doesn't offer. I did need a cup and although they had no ice they could offer, they happily gave me a cup. There are 2 port a potties there that people can use. One for men and one for women. Fairly clean if you ask me. All in all, I had a great time, even with the crazy Kubric film I chose to go watch. :) I can't wait for them to reopen again in a couple of months. I shall make them a regular spot. Oh, and if you run out of juice while leaving your radio on, they will give you a boost. Gotta love that! read more

The staff here is doing a really good job keeping it so that everyone can see while sitting in lawn chairs behind their cars, or sitting in the back of their SUV/hatchback/truck. Dog friendly on a leash (no asshole dogs barking it up so far). I can hear cicadas and owls and other country sounds with a nice breeze. BYOB/food. They have a concession trailer. So far, pretty darn good. There's a huge lawn chair area (walk ins are okay) area in front of the screen. We're on the back row for "big ass cars." I have a Nissan Armada, and am pretty darn good at camping in it anyway... so this is great. FM radio broadcast. There's a bathroom in an RV type structure, clean spot with extra hand sanitizer by the sink. I was at the double feature with the Big Lebowski and Half Baked for 420. The Big Lebowski looked great, but the image for Half Baked was cut off 1/4 part of the screen on the right side and the bottom. Very disappointing that heads were cut off at times!!! Nevertheless, I love the movie and just watched anyway while many people left. Because of this I rate 4 stars instead of 5. I would still go back, the atmosphere was great! read more

Can't wait to go back! On Valentines Day my girlfriend planned our date and took me to Blue Starlite. WE LOVED IT! Black and white Audrey Hepburn movie, vintage speaker, candy in the chinese take out box! The set up was super cute. That night i met the manager/owner Josh who was extremely helpful and sweet. He asked how i liked blue starlite and I told him we loved it and we'd be back. Somewhere in the conversation i mentioned i had just come home for a couple wks because i was on break from pre-deployment training. I told him I'm in the Army and I'd be deploying in a couple months. A few days later i flew out for more training. I was coming back home the day before my girlfriends birthday and was trying to think of something creative/sweet to do for her. We talked about what she wanted to do and she said "Lets go see Mars Attacks at the drive in!" I figured Josh would remember me cause of the conversation we had so i emailed him. Told him i wanted to do something for her and asked if maybe i can make something they could include before the movie. I made a powerpoint with pictures and the last slide was a letter to her. After emailing back and forth he said he couldn't get the powerpoint to work but he had typed up the letter and it played right before the movie. She was so freaked out, excited, happy, confused ...haha... Besides the drive in being super rad, the management and staff are as well!!! Thanks guys! She said it was the best birthday present ever!
