I can also accept that some people enjoy a huge amount of cheese on their French onion soup. However, the dressing on the Caesar salad was really inexcusable. My boyfriend chose this place on a recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg. He wanted something inexpensive and veto'd my choices. Little did he know this place was kind of pricey but the food was soooo good. I got the French onion soup which was 10 dollars. We both thought it was odd that they didn't have an option to do a half soup half sandwich but they had a half salad half sandwich only with certain sandwiches. The French onion soup was a big portion and made a nice light lunch. Mmm perfect on a rainy day. My bf got the half croque madame sandwich and a salad. We enjoyed dinner here on our last night in Williamsburg and met friends who lived locally and had never dined here before. Our expectations were likely a bit high, but the meal was just standard fare. Our waitress was very pleasant and helped navigate my food allergies. Though a bit slow to come out, the food was all very fresh. Not pictured is the salmon croquette po boy our friend enjoyed. Based on his description, it was seasoned and executed a bit better than our steak frites. The salad was fresh with a simple vinaigrette. The steak was tender but lacked seasoning and sear. So this was a date night, so no phones allowed and this is why there are no pics. Sorry. The drink selection was nice and my wife had the expresso martini and i had the Manhattan. YUM! We started off with soup, my wife had the French Onion soup and I had the New England Clam. Goodness they were terrific and the portion size was HUGE. The taste was even better! My wife ordered the salmon sandwich and she thought it was too fishy. She is a mild fish only kinda gal. I had the blackened fish reuben sandwich, the taste was great and again nice portion size. There was alot of dressing on the sandwich, made the bread a little mushy. Otherwise great sandwich. Next time, order dressing on the side. Finished off with creme brûlée, it was fantastic. Ordered the chocolate mousse to go for our daughter, the Uber driver for the night. She loved it, i had a small taste and it was awesome! The service was impeccable, Thank You so much! Hands down our favorite place to eat in town - a trip to Williamsburg isn't complete without a visit to the Blue Talon. The food is consistently wonderful, and the ambience is cozy without being unbearably loud. Table service is outstanding - friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating. We've brought our son along from infancy and have always felt welcome. HOWEVER: I am knocking off a full star for the hostess alone. This has always been the weakest link in the chain, but on our last visit the young lady at the hostess station was nothing short of hostile. Not what I expect from this establishment. Just visited here for the first time. We got escargot, mussels in white wine, veal blanquette, pot de creme, & espresso. Oh plus the kid's pasta with butter and parmesan. Loved the vibe and ambiance. Staff were friendly. The traditional escargot was tender and fresh, nicely seasoned as well. Mussels in white wine dish was definitely passable. Great portion but flavorless and some of the mussels weren't fresh. The veal on the other hand, was superb. It was tender and anything with morel in the sauce tasted umami to the max. The roasted veggies that accompanied the veal did not disappoint as well. Pot de creme of the day was passionfruit. So so good! They used Illy for coffee so it was quality. Lovely lunch here on a Monday. The service is really superb and friendly. My toddler was given a very cute rooster coloring sheet (I guess roosters are their thing) that occupied her until the food was served (which was quick!). Not good as it used to be. Maybe since it is tourist season the staff is just not as well trained. Food offerings for brunch were not special or memorable. The quiche was good but lots of wilted greens in the salad which shows the kitchen is not watching quality which is disappointing. Waitstaff should not interrupt customers that are clearly speaking to one another and should be a little less intrusive. Don't ask if we want dessert or clear plates while one of the party is still eating. Rushing a table is rude. read more

Meat missing flavor, bread extremely soggy Rye fish sandwich- moist, full of flavor, delicious served with a dill spear and salad. Bread was toasted perfectly. Smoked salmon crepe -(this was an appetizer) three mini crepes...a dollop of sour cream (I would have preferred cream cheese), sliced fresh cucumber, tomato, and red onion. What a cute place! I felt transported back to Paris. My husband had the Short Ribs and I had the Steak Diane. Both were exceptionally delicious! They also had a wonderful kids menu and they were pleased. :-) Our server, Rachel was also awesome. She was great with the kids, knowledgeable about the menu, and incredibly kind. We had an issue I was trying to resolve and I felt awful being on the phone. She was gracious and patient with me and even kindly gave me advice on pharmacies since I couldn't find a 24-hour place. We were able to work that out and get dessert and cappuccinos to-go so we didn't miss out! I cannot say it enough - this place is the full package. Great food, great service, and wonderful ambiance. My husband and I were out for date night, and picked the Blue Talon as it was a spot we have visited at least once or twice per year since living in Williamsburg for the past 9 years. Unfortunately this might be our last visit. The server was inadequate at best. The Sazerac cocktail was very good-well made and presented. But it went downhill quickly after that. We asked about the waitress advice on which appetizer, and instead of making a suggestion , she rudely told us she would come back when we were ready and moved on to the next table. We did order the fondue app, which was totally lackluster, cold, had no flavor and just was not restaurant worthy. Husband ordered entree of beef bourguignon short ribs, but with French onion soup to start. I ordered the crepes. After having our cold ( fondue is not supposed to be cold) appetizer for what was about 3 minutes, they brought out the entrees... but didn't bring the soup? We asked the server (food runner, not the regular server) about the soup and she picked up the entrees and brought them back to the kitchen...? We were fine accepting them, but she didn't acknowledge that? Strange but we didn't want to make a fuss. They brought the soup which was mediocre at best. Then about 10 minutes later brought the entrees again. My husband's was STONE cold. As if they brought it back to the kitchen, didn't re fire, and didn't even put under the heat lamps to "hold" it there? They must have just left it sit to get cold while they brought the soup. To be clear, we would have been absolutely fine accepting our entrees before the soup, but she didn't give us the option, just looked at us strange and whisked them away. The crepes? They come in a crock thats topped with the sauce and very very heavy baked breadcrumbs.. it looks like more a pot pie than crepes, which you could not taste under all of the heavy breadcrumbs. When ordering crepes in a French bistro, you expect to see and taste the delicate crepes, etc... sadly they just were not edible; my husband and I agree they do this to cover up the fact that the crepes are just subpar and not the delicate taste and presentation that they should be. The filling was terrible-its nothing but mush; it tasted like a casserole someone made with pantry staples, froze for 2 months and then reheated. Avoid ordering the crepes if you wind up at the Blue Talon. As poor as the crepes were, about 3-4 minutes after receiving our entrees, the waitress asked if we wanted a box? We had just gotten them... literally a few minutes before asking if we wanted a box. We didn't finish either, so yes we needed the box; but it would have been nice not to have been rushed (we were not sitting and taking up a table, etc... the restaurant was 1/2 empty, on a Friday night; and at this point we had only been there approx 35-40 mins or so). Dessert was the butter cake and that was divine, thus 2 starts and not one. BUT-the last thing to point out was that the entire time we were there-an hour or so? -the lights flickered-the entire time....? They just capped off what was a bizarre evening... we were totally surprised that this previously reliable bistro has gone so wrong. Leave it to the tourists. If you are looking for French Le Yaca is always a cut above the rest; or if in Richmond, the Can Can Brasserie is always a fun stop with a lively atmosphere and just good food. read more

After a day at the American Revolution Museum and Yorktown Battlefield, we headed for our planned stop for an early dinner - only to discover they were closed on Sundays. We spotted the Blue Talon across the street and made a quick decision - and were delighted we did! While not inexpensive, the Blue Talon is now on our list of restaurant memories. As we perused the menu, we commented on all the "classics" we were seeing .... Escargot, Steak Tartare, French Onion Soup, Steak Diane and many others. Then we spotted the TV over the bar playing a loop of old black and white Julia Child shows and realized we had somehow stumbled into this glorious renaissance of French cooking! We decided to make the most of the opportunity and ordered appetizers of Salmon Rillettes and escargot to share. After enjoying every last morsel, I ordered a lighter chicken salad entree and Keith selected the Rosette de Lyon Baguette (thinly sliced sausage with warm brie cheese on a baguette) I normally am not a sausage fan but my bite was fantastic. Luckily, somehow we found room to share their "Burnt Sugar Ice Cream" If I had to select a final meal, that treat would be included LOL. Met up with a friend to have a weekend in Williamsburg and went here for our last dinner and oh what a dinner it was. We shared an appetizer of fondue which was out of this world. I was going to be traveling by train the next day and I knew whatever I chose for my entree was never going to be finished so it would need to be able to travel a little the next day so I opted for the chicken salad tartine with a mixed greens side salad. The chicken salad was perfection but I have to tell you- the Sherry vinaigrette dressing on the greens was just out of this world. It was bright and tangy and sweet. Maybe it was because I had just inhaled a bunch of salty, gorgeous, melted cheese but that dressing is something I need to try to recreate. It was perfection. By this tie I was beyond hungry. I was seated at an outside table. The outside waitstaff was a bit sluggish. I asked for a Coke as my blood sugar was falling. All in all, just disappointing. In the south, we'd describe our server with a 'bless his heart.' In all honesty, it looked like he just smoked a blunt and was high as a kite. We started the night with our server fumbling about how the restaurant is like a diner, but a fancy diner. We ordered drinks...at which point he realizes he has no notepad, and instead writes the order on his hand. After we get our app - mussels, which was the best part of the meal - we wait for him to come back and place our entrees. Some 10 minutes later, he shuffles back over and asks 'you got the oysters app right? Did you order already?' I think my glare sufficed for a response. We got the pork shank and short rib. Both were good portion sizes, but the sauce on my short rib was way too sweet. We saw one table get up and ask to sit in another section, while a table of regulars asked for another server. Food: 5 Stars Decor: 4.5 Stars Service: 3 Stars A beautifully decorated restaurant with a wonderful feel of a small cafe in Paris. Five of us dined before going to the Williamsburg Arts Festival. Three of the five of us had never been to Blue Talon, two hadn't been in quite a while. I started with a Manhattan which has a strong write up on the menu. The drink was well balanced and delicious. We ordered a cheese board for the table. The board was dropped off at the table with no explanation of what types of cheeses were being featured. They were quite tasty, however we were left guessing as to what we were eating. Our best guesses were a parmesan, gouda, and havarti. The cheeses were accompanied by candied walnuts, green grapes, green apple, and a few slices of baguette. My father also ordered New England Clam Chowder. The chowder came in a half quart All-Clad stainless steel ramekin, filled with a wonderfully aromatic cream broth with potatoes, bacon, and littleneck clams still in the shell. For entrees, we ordered the Rotisserie Chicken, Classic Steak Diane, Calves Livers, House-made Meatloaf, and the Beef Bourguignon. The most attractive looking dish was the Calves Livers, however all the dishes were beautifully plated. The Beef Bourguignon and the Meatloaf came out in piping hot cast iron dishes. Each of the dishes were raved about by each diner. Each dish was cooked perfectly, came out hot, and was delicious! The only area where there could have been improvement would have been the service. Our waiter continually pushed the Duck al'Orange (the most expensive item on the menu). If he had offered it once, we would have heard that the dish was good and prefered by someone. Multiple mentions of the dish made it seem more as though he was pushing the expensive item. After enjoying the other dishes, I am sure the Duck al'Orange is well worth the $40 price, however a more authentic or genuine offer; "I recommend the Duck al'Orange. Our chef uses the zest, juice, and flesh of two blood oranges and slow roasts a Heritage Mallard, finishing it with Grand Marnier for a generous layering of citrus flavor." Tell us why you recommend it as opposed to just pushing it four times during our decision process. In the end, the food was fantastic. The decor was very nice. And the service was good enough. I highly recommend Blue Talon Bistro the next time you're in Williamsburg! read more

This place is the real deal. The hot chocolate will make you weep. We never miss Blue Talon when we're in Williamsburg. It's our favorite spot. The atmosphere is casual but the food is classic French. The cruffins for breakfast are a must try. Last night I had the Roasted Cod, a baguette, a glass of Vouvray and Gateau Breton (butter cake) for dessert. I was very happy when we left. My family was visiting Williamsburg for the Thanksgiving holiday and after speaking to the manager on the phone who was really lovely and accommodating I decided to book Blue Talon for our Thanksgiving dinner. Our group has some pretty discerning guests but the Thanksgiving dinner was absolutely delicious and exceeded all our expectations. The stuffing was the best part for our group! Our waitress was also so lovely and patient with the little ones in our group. We also got the steak frites and the fries here are delicious! My only piece of feedback is that I think they should include the pie with the cost of the Thanksgiving meal (even if the price went from 44.95 to 49.95). Surly waitress yelled at our kids for not speaking up and grilled them on their ages to make sure they qualified for the kid's menu. It's so outrageously expensive that we stuck to burgers and sandwiches, which were meh. I ordered my burger medium and it was grey and dry. Fries were almost as good at McDonalds. As the big fish in the minuscule pond of fine Williamsburg eateries, Blue Talon makes the tragic mistake of believing it's own BS. They consistently mismanage their capacity and make even customers with reservations wait 30-40 minutes for their table. Their front desk staff are obnoxious (see "believe own BS") and act like they are running the top restaurant in MA or NYC. They are not. The service staff are wonderful and the French-inspired menu is solid. But come prepared to wait and be disappointed when you meet the crew at the podium. read more

A friend and I wanted to get breakfast before the Williamsburg Farmer's Market. I had never been to Blue Talon and wanted to try it out. The breakfast menu is a bit on the smaller side. Being gluten free there were really only two options I could pick. I got the 2 eggs scrambled with cheese, bacon and I substituted a side of fruit for the potato cake. The real star of the show is the Parisian Hot chocolate. The Marshmallow was huge and the hot chocolate was dark and creamy.
