Had rwo wonderful breakfasts at the Terrace served by the most upbeat and friendly waitress by the name of Sarah. She kept the coffee coming and was very attentive to the entire room of customers. I ordered the grain bowl which began with a smear of green goddess dressing on the bottom heaped with quinoa and wild rice with the most perfectly ripe avocado sliced on the side and a perfectly poached egg on top. We made a reservation here during the Fourth of July week for a Thursday and arrived at the Inn for dinner. We weren't sure where the restaurant was located within the building so we stopped to ask where the Terrace a room was at a hostess stand where three women were working. They all stared at us like we had dropped from the sky and then one woman gestured down the hall. Except it wasn't down the hall. We were in fact at the Terrace Room hostess stand. Sort of an odd beginning. We were seated at a two top with one chair and a couch with huge pillows scattered all over that left no room to actually sit. Had to toss them to the center of the couch to squeeze in. The menus are giant in size so it's hard to lay them down on the small table. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We started off with a bourbon cocktail that included some candied ginger and was very refreshing. The server gave us each a small cube of bread and some butter. It was sort of comical how miserly they were with the bread. The menu offerings were sort of odd but we were able to watch what other tables ordered to make our selections. The entree prices are pretty hefty. We each got a Caesar Salad to start that was good. We both settled on the brisket sandwich (a July Fourth special) and one of us got the fries and the other a side of summer veggies that was squash & zucchini. The sandwich was okay but nothing grand for $21 and the veggie side caused us to both explode with laughter at how meager it was. C'mon folks, squash is dirt cheap so load it up. Absolutely ridiculous. Their wine selections were not super familiar to us and pricey but they give you an ample pour. The Inn itself is very beautiful and the night stars shimmering on the reflecting pool out front is very romantic. I'd recommend a drink at the bar and skipping the $200 dinner for two. read more

We ate here on a Friday evening at 5:30 and were surprised to be almost the only ones there, though a few more people did show up by the time we were done. The decor, place settings, etc. are very nice, and there are nice views out the large windows to the patio and golf course. The service was attentive, but the food was just OK. It's not crazy expensive, but not cheap either, and because it is the Williamsburg Inn, we were expecting better. The pre-appetizer cornbread cake was tasty, but I asked for another one and it never came. I had a corn chowder with crab meat that was lukewarm and had a fishy taste. I also had rainbow trout, which was good, but it seemed like there were more salad greens than there was fish. My wife had shrimp and grits, which she said were pretty good. The third person in our party had a shrimp cocktail, which was good, and an iceberg salad, which was just OK. We had a bottle of prosecco and, as the server poured the first glass, she noticed the glass was dirty. She took it away and brought a new glass, but in the process, we lost about 1/5 of the bottle and they made no mention of making that up. We did not get dessert. I am glad we went, but it is not a restaurant that I would rush back to as there are many better options in Williamsburg. read more

UPDATE TO 1-STAR ORIGINAL REVIEW (2 days later): Were able to contact the exec chef who took this quite seriously and made things right, assuring us that what happened was not nearly up to their standard. While we can't promise *you* won't have a similar experience, we can say that in this case the executive chef personally responded promptly to a respectful polite email and then handled it all very appropriately once informed. And for that alone, we revise to 4 stars. Perhaps ours was an isolated incident. Regardless, a big thank you to the executive chef for the response and swift refund. Much appreciated. Went over to the Inn for dinner and was not disappointed. We started the evening with a lovely bottle of Saratoga still water and some adult beverages. I had the Abby's Rose and it was delicious. We were presented with some bread and butter to begin with (the butter is in an absolutely adorable dish on the table). The shrimp cocktail was probably the biggest "disappointment" of the evening, but that's a stretch. My only issue was the cocktail sauce had some odd herbs in it--- I would have preferred a more typical sauce. There were four large shrimp in the cocktail. For dinner I had the filet and WOW it was delicious! Perfect sear and flavor. Mashed potatoes and veggies were also amazing as well. None of the desserts struck me (and everything had milk in it that evening as well) so we skipped. Our server, Trayvon, was wonderful and provided excellent service throughout the meal without being obtrusive. The ambiance is truly modern classic and not stuffy at all. Making reservations was a breeze over the phone. The Terrace room seems to be more suitable for groups of four or less, whereas the Goodwin Room is tailored for larger gatherings. It's very cozy and elegantly appointed. Our server was a delight! Her laughter and cheerful spirit made the experience that much more enjoyable! She is very personable! The menu is very limited, which can be a blessing or a hindrance based on your perspective. The portions are what you would expect at an upscale restaurant. However, the chicken pot pie did look more filling. The two in our group were happy with their meal, and said it had more of a soupy consistency versus a gravy style. My husband and I wanted to sample two different dishes, so I opted for the brisket and rib burger with fries and he ordered the salmon. Both were flavorful and delicious. But my husband and I were still hungry after. It may have been that we hadn't eaten lunch earlier. Three of us had mocktails, two which were a fall Granada spice drink and the other one which was essentially a lemonade. My husband had a real drink, an old Timey, which he said was good, but as expected was pricey. We all ordered dessert from three choices. One was a flourless chocolate cake, a banana foster creme brûlée, and a blood orange panna cotta tart which was more a beehive meringue with a blood orange sorbet inside on a bed of spiced crumble. I was politely steered away from the blood orange panna cotta tart, however my curiosity got the best of me . I'm laughing because I should have listened to our server. It wasn't terrible, but not as delicious or creamy and decadent as their creme brûlée or flourless cake. If you like tangy, sugary and crunchy the blood orange panna cotta tart would be the right option. The views from the Terrace room of the putting green is wonderful. This is a nice convenient option if you're staying on the premise or sister resorts and like to be tucked away. You can have a "fancy" meal with high prices and not have to dress up, as there is no dress code and it's considered casual, upscale dining. You can find other restaurants with a lesser price point, or same price point with more options and tastier options, but when you dine here you are paying for the ambiance and service. It was not crowded when we dined at 5:15pm and our waters were always replenished and our plates promptly removed. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and to be honest the reviews I've read on TripAdvisor and Yelp made it a toss up on deciding to eat here. I decided to just experience the food/restaurant myself. I went in with certain expectations and wasn't disappointed. I just left with a bit of lingering hunger ;-) It was a pleasant experience, to try at least ONCE. read more

We stayed at the Colonial Houses and got breakfast here as part of our hotel stay package. Walking in, we did not know what to expect. Immediately, we felt underdressed and out of place in our "touring Colonial Williamsburg on foot" clothes... But we went ahead anyway! I had the blueberry stuffed pancakes which were truly to die for. Husband had a sampler which he said was okay. Service was absolutely phenomenal and the room was beautiful. This is definitely not a place we would typically go, as it felt very "fancy," but since it was included in our package I'm glad we took advantage! The Williamsburg Inn is by far the classiest place in colonial Williamsburg - very nice. I was so excited to take my mother there for the Independence Day holiday tea. By and large the tea was very nice and the sweets and sandwiches served were top-notch. What really took me back was the fact that after paying almost $100 a person with tip for a few cookies and tea the staff presented me with a bill for the single Diet Coke. my mother had ordered. Seriously? I mean, I could certainly understand if it had been a few drinks or something that was excessive but a single soft drink served off a fountain gun. Maybe at Applebees. After spending $300 for the three of us to have T this is very un characteristic for an establishment like this at least the ones I've been to the world over. About as gauche as it gets and not what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Again, I don't want anyone to lose money or to get anything for free, but this was a bit ridiculous given the fact that she was asking for it instead of the glass of champagne that was being offered. Perhaps a sit down with the staff or if this is what management intends then they should expect negative reviews. The ambiance of the Terrace Room is lovely, a worthy setting for this elegant Inn. The food did the Inn proud: well prepared, nicely presented. What failed was the service. The wine service was particularly inept: a 2015 Bordeaux carelessly handled--cork broken; initial pour dumped into the glass without elegance and an amount far beyond what it should have been. Service was abrupt and rushed. No elegance here. No chance for a leisurely dinner. Interruptions included attempts to clear plates while one diner was still eating. Clearly training of wait staff is not adequate. This was our second time dining at the Terrace Room, and it mirrors that of our first experience. We tried this place with friends thinking because the Inn had a good reputation and the decorations were lovely, it was a safe bet. First, our server was fantastic. He was clear, helpful, friendly & efficient. They were out of the Pot Pie, the 'Entree of the Season'. The soup and goulash portions were small, especially for the price. The trout was excellent as were the sides. Problem is, 4 of our party of 8 defaulted to the 'Cedar River Burger'... thinking it must be decent for $22. Twenty two dollars. It was cooked to order but nothing special. We asked for a lettuce wraps instead of the brioche bun (now common in several supermarket chains). One plate has mushrooms instead of the seasoned fries it came with. Take a look at the pictures and think $22. Meals at Kephi Greek Kitchen, Second Street Bistro for dinner and even Shorty's Diner and Mellow Mushroom (great vegan sandwich) for lunch were much more enjoyable. read more

For my grandmother's 100th birthday, we went for dinner at the Goodwin Room. First of all, Trayvon was an absolutely fantastic server, single-handedly handling our whole table the whole time (only 8, but still - a lot of friendly demands). Since that wonderful old woman's practically deaf, I asked if I could close the doors a bit so our shouting at her wouldn't disturb anyone across the hall. He laughed and just shut the doors (we'd reserved the room, but I just wanted to be polite). Knowledgeable about the menu, and never hovered - just always seemed to turn up when you needed. We started with two plates of the brussel sprouts (the pomegranate seeds are a really nice touch). Nicely charred and not overly filling. And while I normally prefer raw oysters, the flavor overload from our other small plate was quite nice. A little salty, but well worth it. Oh, I forget we were served rolls, which kind of says enough about those. I ordered the pot pie, which while technically perfect from a culinary perspective, seemed to lack the wholesomeness you'd expect. I'll try the shepherd's pie next sometime and see how that's different. Wonderfully cooked and balanced, but just didn't keep me wanting to eat more. Three others ordered the pork tenderloin, tender being the very operative word there (I had a couple small bites). The flavor itself wasn't fantastic, relying more on any accoutrements along the plate. Don't get me wrong - You will very likely not be disappointed if that's what you're in the mood for, but you won't be blown away either looking for something new. Across the table was a plate with the filet and some gorgeous roasted cubed vegetables. I told my aunt that if he goes to the restroom, half of those veggies are going on my bread plate and they'll never be seen again. Well, he didn't leave and after only about 20 min of everyone talking, I looked there over to an empty plate. The fries though - those got passed around the table a bit - I had only one while there (more later - re-toasted, but still nice). I can see how they'd stand up to the burger with the additional fat and cheese but might overpower everything else. And I'll say I mean that in the best way possible. Just crunchy enough on the outside and nice to slowly eat. Those, while nice in the toaster oven later, are meant to be a part of a meal and add to it, not eaten from a bag later on. That whole mixture just makes for a nice pairing. Ambiance (sorry, it's listed above before I post) is quite nice. I was a little disappointed with our place settings tonight, but the service and food more than made up for it. Not a thing I'll think about later. Nice old Virginia history throughout, and whether brunch, formal dinners, or just the two of us at the Rockefeller Room, I have nothing but respect for the chefs and servers, so while they're listed as semi-casual, I will absolutely dress as to respect the room. (Plus my wife'll be sitting across from me for 90 minutes, so might as well look the part). So ambiance? I've never been to Williamsburg Inn and left feeling like there was anyone there not glad to have us. read more

Finding this restaurant was it a little bit of a challenge. It is hidden inside of Williamsburg Inn. There are no signs outside to point the way. This place is tastefully presented. There are plenty of windows looking out onto a very nice golf course. It is pricey, but patrons are paying as much for the atmosphere as the food. We visited for lunch and the place was less than 20% full. I wasn't very hungry, so just ordered a burger. The burger was large and served with a lot of fries. Overall the food was good, but not great. I expected to be more impressed with this place than we were. read more

This was our second dinner in Williamsburg, a short but enjoyable walk from our room. We had a reservation for 6:30 but I am not sure we needed it. Always better to be safe! The room is so delicate, lovely and elegant. The view to the gardens was beautiful. Our server was extremely personable and efficient. I started my meal with a cup of butternut squash soup that was simply divine. Great presentation, taste and texture. For my entree, I had the fish special. It was rock fish on top of asparagus, pureed potatoes, mushrooms and a magical sauce that was divine. I have never had anything like it. My husband and I split the chocolate cake which was small but so rich and flavorful. We paired it with French press coffee, the Williamsburg blend. Oh my, what coffee heaven. I drank two cups and savored every single drop. Was this meal a bit pricey? Yes, it was. But it was worth every single penny. read more

While driving home from D.C we made a detour to the Williamsburg inn. We arrived late and I was so thankful to have a causal dinning option. I will say I was a little disappointed Firstly, I ordered a martini and there was a mix up at the bar. I ordered a dirty vodka martini and received a regular martini with a twist. I am not one to complain so I sipped it and decided to order another. The next time I ordered a dirty martini, I received a gin martini. I was sitting close enough to the bar window that I noticed a server upset with my server for taking his table's drink. Still, I didn't want to complain- but there is a huge difference between a dirty vodka martini and a gin martini. I kept thinking my server would say something, but she just looked at me nervously. Secondly, I ordered the mussels, which were delish, but didn't come with toast points. Instead I received fries on the side. I missed the toast points to dip in the delicious, garlicky liquid, but I do enjoy fries. The mussels made up for this minor mistake because they were so delicious. Finally, at the end of my meal I asked for a cappuccino, to go, for the walk back to my room. Even though there were several tables present in the dinning room, my server informed me that it was too late to get a cappuccino. I know this isn't Burger King, where you get it "your way," but geez. For such an upscale hotel I assumed even their casual dinning would feel a little upscale. My advice would be to sit at the bar. The star is for the bellman because he was five star and so is the beautiful hotel lobby with gorgeous roses! I wish the meal had matched the beautiful location. Unfortunately our meal was a disappointment. We had looked forward to eating here for months having gotten reservations long before our arrival in Williamsburg. There were no specials so those of you who have experienced a expanded menu beyond the few items visible online can know that previous experiences don't match summer 2021. We had planned on eating choices from the online menu but other members of our party had experienced a delightful specials menu that was nonexistent last night. Our waitress was initially attentive but then disappeared rather than recognize that there were visible issues with the meal. The charcuterie platter was nice but not worthy of its price tag... (I like great cheese and delicious savory bites, but my small town offers fancier platters!) The Salmon wasn't impressive, but rather looked like a tidbit of food on a plate.... The soup looked like a sauce or berry bowl of soup, and the sandwich that was ordered took far far tooo long to arrive. The Steak Frites was totally unimpressive. The meat was fatty and either over or undercooked.... Several people ate this meal and we all agreed there were issues with the meat and it wasn't that the server gave us the wrong plates but rather that the meat was irregularly cooked and a very poor quality meat to begin with. The chef should be ashamed to be placing that meat on the table of a historically elegant dining location. Presidents and royalty may have eaten here but I bet the revered chefs of the past would banish this one to the dishwater. The club sandwich was embarrassingly late in its arrival to the table... Four meals were eaten while the fifth diner was still waiting for his meal to be served after he had finished his saucer of soup. (My point being that the wait was beyond acceptable and it wasn't a case of that diner not being finished with his soup... it was epic-ly bad. The server could have responded in such a way that we felt noticed that didn't happen as it was we felt ignored. The steak was so noticeably bad that she could have gone back to the kitchen and addressed it because when a five star location is serving meat the quality of a mystery meat meal at college it's beyond bad. Definitely not worth eating there when are other places that are delicious. I hope a hotel employee sees this review. I had been hoping to be surprised at how amazing this place was. The beautiful grounds and lovely historic building were everything I expected from the things I have read about this gorgeous hotel but the restaurant wasn't at all worthy of its location. We were disappointed by the lunch at the King's Arm Tavern (burnt burger for $14 for the kids vs savory burger for $9.50 at the Williamsburg Inn) so the next day we wondered into the Williamsburg Inn to get a better lunch and no wait. The service was attentive, our server Trayvon knew which items were GF and what was not. There was no GF menu, but we had plenty of lunch options. A friend and I went to lunch today at the Terrace Room in the Williamsburg Inn. our orders of Cobb salads,which were highly disappointing. The chicken was a few small slices of dark meat, couples with a line of tiny cauliflower pieces, tomatoes, 3 thin slices of hard boiled egg,and loads of lettuce. If it weren't for the pretzel roll we would have left hungry. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The bartender had to seat us because the hostess was on the phone and did not recognize us. When we left the restaurant she was still huddled with her phone and no recognition of us. I go to this restaurant often.The decline seems to be happening.When it reopened I gave them the benefit of the doubt because they were beginning again. There is no excuse for bad food. I will not spend any more money at this establishment waiting for them to improve.There are too many good restaurants in town with much better food than Williamsburg Inn that are pleasures to enjoy. read more

My wife and I had dinner there and enjoyed it. Service and atmosphere is delightful. I had the Chicken Pot Pie ($16) which was fantastic. It had lots of chicken and veggies in a light and flavorful sauce with a flakey puff pastry on top and is probably the best I've ever had. read more
