We had a busy day planned but had thought ahead and made reservations. BTB is popular for a whole lot of reasons and hopefully you will find out why. It's French Country, not quite formal but elegant in the presentation of the seating and table settings. Staff are attentive, knowledgeable and their attention to detail shows. After making sure we had a reservation for Father's Day, a Sunday at 1700 because we like early, we stopped on in. First thing that struck me was the slightly disinterested hostess, but from then on, superb. With a five-year-old, we often end up ordering off the main menu because she doesn't always like just chicken tenders. That being said, the kids menu is perfect, and the fact that there are some half size entrées you can get for kiddos who might not want the kids menu is perfect as well. She ended up with the kids charcuterie and gobbled the whole thing up! My husband ordered the lamb shank and I got the mushroom pasta. Both were absolutely fabulous! The lamb was perfectly cooked and warmed to perfection, and my mushroom pasta with a cashew cream sauce was absolutely exceptional! Getting a good cashew cream sauce is not necessarily easy to do, but they nailed it. With the extensive wine menu and options for everyone, we were good. On top of it, our waiter was awesome! Not only was his mustache perfectly shaped, but his demeanor and attention just right. His recommendation for my husband's entrée was also perfect, and he didn't have to think hard about what he would recommend. First of all, before I forget his name, a BIG thank you to Kevin. He was a wonderful server. So friendly and kind. We could've chatted with him for hours! Ask for his area!!! My mom just moved to Williamsburg so she is excited to take me to all of her favorite places. This has been a favorite for a while. It is an authentic French bistro that serves chickens from our favorite village in France, Bresse. We both had the exact same dishes. We started off with French onion soup. Well. To say that they give ample cheese is a bit of an understatement. There was easily a couple of inches of melted goodness. The flavor was mild, not salty with just a touch of herb. It was a standard crock but by the time you are finished you are almost too full. This is a shame because next we had the chicken and mushroom crepes. They were to DIE for! The Mornay sauce was perfect and the mushrooms were awesome. All in all it was a perfect meal from the wine to the service. The only issue were the prices. Even for the area they are very expensive. This may be because of the menu items coming from France but the crepes were the cheapest main on the menu. Great food but be prepared for a significant wait. Visiting Williamsburg with family, my cousin who is a local recommended Merchant's Square. It's a fun area I'd like to explore more. Arriving at Blue Talon, it was a 30-45 minute wait, which isn't crazy. However, between being seated and receiving our food was certainly over an hour. That being said, we all enjoyed our food! I had the Croque Madame, which I very much enjoyed along with the side salad. I also like their extensive drink menu. Their customer service could use some improvement but no one was rude, to be clear. This place is definitely worth a visit! read more

The food was amazing, and the portions were generous. I had the lamb, and my husband had the bourguignon. We both liked our meals. The kids enjoyed their burgers. We also had dessert, the beignets and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was really rich, so we had to mix it with more milk. The ambiance was great, and the service was excellent. Glorious French Bistro with beyond fabulous Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. How do I know? My girlfriend and I ended up going here three out of our five day stay in Williamsburg at this location and what a pleasant discovery it was. Truffled Eggs- poached eggs in a black truffle cream with toasted baguette and sauteed asparagus. Eggs prepared /served a way that is very unique and the flavor did not disappoint. Who doesn't like dipping their baguette in a flavorful black truffle cream sauce mixed with poached egg? If that is you, definitely not part of my tribe. Breakfast Cassoulet - Braised white beans with pork, duck confit and breakfast sausage, two poached eggs and toasted baguette. This one was good for those looking for some substance as you have some hearty proteins and beans however out of the five plus meals we ordered this was most likely my least favorite. Chicken and Mushroom Crepes -rolled creamed chicken & mushrooms in Mornay sauce. This dish comes out piping out and every bite packs such a plethora of flavor it literally makes your face smile. This has happened to me before with only one other item, a very salty piece of charcuterie from South Philly's Iconic Di Bruno Bros. These dishes are producing a 6th taste beyond the umami flavor if your asking me! Veal Blanquette -veal cutlet in a classic white sauce with Morel mushrooms, fresh asparagus and fingerling potatoes. Mind blowing how tender and delious this veal is. I much prefer my veal with no breading or add on's and this one is prepared just the way I like along with the most tasty Morel mushrooms I have had this side of the Mississippi. Gateau Breton - This may look like an oridinary dessert but it is not. The best and I mean best butter cake from France, the Gateau Breton. This is a must order. I wasn't expecting an authentic French Bistro in Merchant's Square located in the historic Colonial Williamsburg location but good lord did my birthday come early finding such a beaut of a bistro! We were lucky enough to sneak a seat at the bar on Sunday AM without any kind of wait. The bartender was super attentive and we had excellent service. I checked in on Yelp and got a free espresso which was really good quality and taste and we also got the french press for two and split it - again, great coffee. We chose to get their chopped salad loaded with several cured meats (like bacon, ham, salami), tomatoes, diced egg, crumbled cheese, bacon & spiced nuts. It was tossed throughout in dressing already and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Very good and light and fresh. One of the best chopped salads I've had in a long long time. I also got their version of Eggs Benedict with two eggs over perfectly toasted bread with asparagus, ham and a side of a spiced tomato sauce. YUM. Light but yummy and the eggs were perfectly poached. I want to come back for dinner as I browsed the dinner menu options and saw several things I wanted to try. Wow. Blue Talon, just wow! Breakfast is my favorite meal and I could eat breakfast food for every meal of the day for the rest of my life and not get sick of it. Fact. If you want the most bang for your buck, I'd recommend the Blue Talon Breakfast Platter: two eggs any style, homemade grits, potatoes, a country ham biscuit (which is to die for, the biscuit just melts in your mouth!) some smoked bacon and a toasted baguette. It was so rich in flavor I took half of it home, best leftovers I've had in a long time. The coffee was also of great quality. They served Illy coffee in cute crockery and kept our cups full with unlimited refills (black coffee only). Good service and great quality food. I'd highly recommend this place, but do come early on the weekend, it can get full up pretty quickly and they won't take reservations unless you're a big group of 6+. read more

Pleasant waitstaff and delicious food. The setting was restful and the noise level was low.

Firstly, one should never have high expectations when dining out during graduation weekend. That said, our experience (with an 8-top) was not bad once the host 'found' our table after first giving away our reservation. Strangely, they had a shortage of menus, which made no sense at all. We had a couple of cheese boards and a cheese fondue for the table which were both pretty good. I really enjoyed the salmon croquette sandwich; not particularly French, but good. Our table had a few bistro burgers of various varieties (normal, veggie, and one somewhere in the middle). There was one hiccup with one of the burgers which came with an egg over easy (way too easy - looked to be sunny side up); not exactly what was expected from the 'fried egg' listed on the menu. For others, the roasted cod was good, as was the twisted pasta w/ mushrooms. The menu seemed a bit light on French offerings. For instance, the only mussels offering was mussels marinierie; not bad, but not what I was looking for this evening. I tried this place on a whim when visiting Williamsburg after discovering that the Cheese Shoppe is closed on Mondays. I and one of my daughters had the steak frites, my other daughter had the kids penne, and my wife had the quiche of the day. My wife said the quiche and accompanying salad were fantastic, which is why this got 3 stars. I thought the steak frites was one of the worst that I have ever had. The steak was surprisingly tasteless for a skirt steak and underseasoned. The fries were luke warm and soggy. The salad was lacking dressing (that my wife said was delicious). Service was superb by Norman as we celebrated St.Patrick's Day at this place. Offerings included Irish food for the St.Patrick's Day, but the price for the corned beef seemed too much compared to the rest of the menu. I chose escargots and Norman described them exactly but they were lacking any flavor. I had to use pepper on each of my escargots to make the best of them, but still thought they were not worth it. Hubby got beef tartare and he too had to use regular salt, which is unusual for him to do so when dining out, along with pepper yet he said it was subpar. We had our cocktails of a dry gin martini with olives for hubby while I had vodka with berries. I didn't taste any vodka and I hadn't had any alcohol since the beginning of Lent so I'm sure I would have been able to detect it. Next we had the entrees which was a perfect six diver or ocean scallops for me accompanied by a tasty orzo with sliced morels. Hubby however was served a lamb shank that wasn't even up to room temperature. He touched it immediately upon being served and we were both upset. I placated him with the side of broccolini and one of my scallops along with my orzo. Of course there was an upcharge for the broccolini, yikes, also an upcharge for bread and butter typically served gratis elsewhere. Part of the reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars. Finally his meal was returned and though the lamb was perfect, the rest of his entree, the mashed potatoes and the vegetables were overcooked. So we overpaid for meals that were good but not great. The hollandaise sauce was super thick and rich, and the eggs and ham were cooked perfectly. A very nice local restaurant. Good food, good atmosphere, but like most restaurants nowadays, the service wasn't really that good. We called ahead to get a reservation and we were told, "We completely full, no tables available, but you can wait for a bar table." We arrived ten minutes later and the place was half empty. We were seated right away. From there, we waited and waited until our server finally arrived for her shift. She was totally unprepared for work. Never disappointed with the food and service is always lovely immediately when you walk in the door with greeting to our server. Last summer I started watching my cholesterol and this place is still a go-to for a meal out- I get the Nicole's salad- generous and the tuna is super high quality. Happy New Year! Bartender saves the day! We were excited to try this French bistro as a Francophile. Service was lackluster as in the time it took for us to get a table we drove back to a local bar and got a table outside before the Patriots game at 1pm and ordered drinks and food. If this restaurant had a Michelin star or Madame de Pic was the head chef, I would have expected some pretentiousness. However, a hostess that didn't take my number down correctly after I gave it to her twice, needs to get her ears checked. Granted it's New Year's Day so she needed to order a Bloody Mary from the bartender who saved the day. She was busy but super nice and poured a mimosa for me and gave me some water for a thirsty puppy. She even went to check on our table with the hostess and talked to the wait staff. Perhaps your restaurant is understaffed however if I see other people get seated before me, it makes me wonder. With approximately ten open tables outside and two parties seated before us outside, I feel invisible as I watch a total of three tables seated outside. So if you want a taste of France at CW, you should give it a try and start with a drink at the bar! Hopefully, a manager or the owner will read this review as in the time it took for me to write this review our food has already come out at a nearby not as pretentious bar with fun golf options and a great place to enjoy some football. read more

Late lunch on Saturday. This located in merchant square and walking distance to colonial Williamsburg. Fried oysters - deep fried and the batter a little to thick. Really didn't taste much of the oysters. The bed of salad was a nice touch and helped alleviate the greasy feel. Still I would not recommend. My 8 year old like the burger , it is very fresh and cooked to order. The egg added extra flavor. Hubby enjoyed the salmon poboy. Blackened fish sandwich - I liked the salad mix that came with it , it's refreshing. The Reuben is good as well. Overall decent place for a touristy area. With its Own hit and misses. It didn't help with our dining experience when the waitress (with blue hair) is either forgetful (had to ask for water twice and ask for ketchup multiple times - when the restaurant was not busy) or just forgetful with us (the next table received full services and multiple rounds of water when they didn't need it). On Friday January 31 I took my nieces William and Mary student to Blue Talon as she began her second semester. We had an early 5:00 reservation. We were seated promptly and greeted by our server. From there the service quickly spiraled down. We did not order any alcohol and eventually had to ask her to take the wine glasses away as they were simply in the way. The meal was slow to come but that was not a problem as I was glad to have the time with my niece. When the food did come it came out in pieces. First her meal came and then my meal came. While we enjoyed our time together the service was slow and at one point the server dropped off the dessert menu without speaking. We did want dessert. I finally had to flag down the server to order the dessert. She brought out the spoons without clearing our plates. When the dessert came I had to ask to have our dinner plates removed. The food was very good but the attention to service was poor. I do not mind paying for a good meal but in a place like Blue Talon I also expect good service. Second time dining here. The first was a much different experience than our last. Service- exceptionally slow. We arrived at 6:30 and didn't get to order until 7:30. Our server was clearly "weeded" with 1 party of 10 that requested separate checks. Frankly, you don't alienate your other tables to accommodate that nonsense. The large party should have waited for the inconvenience. So..... we waited about 30 minutes for bar drinks and then another 25 minutes to order, with a 2 month old that doesn't give us those 2.5 hour windows for dinner. Not that I like spending 2.5 hours at dinner either. Food- pretty disappointing. I had the blackened fish Rueben. Way way way way over salted and sloppy. It appears they have a blackened mixture that is placed atop the fish after cooked. That wasn't well received. Burnt bread on the top, sloppy mess on the bottom. It was forgettable. Burger- asked for medium, came out well done, not a touch of pink. Fries were the best part of the dish. Roasted chicken- chicken was moist and tender. Au ju or pan juice that it comes with was delicious. Best dish on the table. Chicken and mushroom Crepes- chicken appeared to be minced or missing. The filling was a mousse consistency that lacked any flavor. Half of this dish made the trash. Crepes must have been made ahead of time as they had a skin on them that made them tough, not tender. Price- very pricy for what was presented. Not worth the cost when the food doesn't meet the quality or preparation expected. We will have to rethink this eatery as an option on future visits. Food was forgettable, service was way too slow, quality and preparation lacking. We had plans to try their desserts, but unfortunately the slow service didn't allow for that. The kitchen actually closed as we ate our meals. 2 stars at this point because our first experience was rather different. Lamb shank, fried oysters, mussels, roasted chicken, beignets were all tasty. Hopefully next visit will revert back to our set expectations from the first visit or we'll have to cross this one off the list. read more

I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs, sunny side up. It was fantastic. Some of the bacon was shared with me from our party. It was done of the best I've ever had.
