The food was wonderful and the staff was even better. We came here after seeing vegetarian options on the menu. We did not know what to expect from this small town restaurant. Lo and behold, our entrees were fresh and tasted brilliant. We ordered the grilled veggie sandwich and the falafel sandwich. Both were vegan, served with a tofu based tzatziki sauce, homemade Thai chilli sauce, and a homemade mustard. The sandwiches were served on foccacia bread. We went hiking in Shenandoah and needed to grab food and came across Blue Wing Frog. We had a group of 9 and everyone tagged about their food and a few even could finish. They really offer a lot. The group had three Reubens, grilled chicken sandwich, cubano, and burgers. If the food want enough the spicy slaw and potato sides were fantastic. The owner came around and also shared samples of their hot sauce. Definitely ask. I wish we had room for their cakes. read more

As we were leaving my wife and I looked at each other and she said she wouldn't come back just as I was saying I would. The food was excellent, the service was not. My wife had the chicken salad sandwich and liked it, I had the shrimp po boy and loved it. On the service side the guy who took our order couldn't tell my wife if the iced tea was sweet or not. However he was able to tell us it was made yesterday. The woman who brought us our food was hopefully having a bad day, because if that is the way she is normally she is in the wrong business. The BWF is a funky, eclectic market kind of place tucked into an old bakery building in Front Royal. It is not your traditional restaurant. We have eaten there at least a dozen times in the past six months. I consider eating at BWF more of a culinary adventure then a standard restaurant experience. The owners pride themselves in serving locally grown organic veggies, locally raised beef, along with other fresh ingredients. They enthusiastically talk about the food they prepare creating a familiar and easy-going atmosphere. The menu often morphs and evolves into eclectic combinations of dinners, sandwiches, sides, and desserts. Some favorite menu items do remain constant. Their daily menu can be found on the BWF Facebook page. The Death by Pork dinner and fresh salmon salad are two of our favorites. All of the food is prepared fresh while you wait so it does take a few more minutes to arrive, but it is definitely worth the wait. A neat little restaurant off the main drag with interesting takes on a handful of Southern dishes. We had the po-boy and the "Death by Pork" sandwich, both of which were lovely. You can serve yourself from the pitchers of ice tea, but they also have a nice selection of bottled domestic craft beer if you're in the mood. We are very torn with how many stars to give this establishment. There is so much potential here however we came with a large group (10) It was made very clear to us (after placing our orders) that because we placed orders at 2 different times our food would come out staggered. No big deal right?! When it was all said and done we were short 1 appetizer, 2 kids meals and 1 adult meal. The adult meal missing was because 30 minutes after placing the order they came out to tell us they ran out of what the order was. Now I understand this is a smaller restaurant and everything is made to order but from start to finish this whole experience was a disaster. Apparently you order your food at the desk and wait ever so patiently for them to bring it to you. This is NOT your typical sit down with waiter staff restaurant. The older gentlemen who seemed to be the glue that kept it going was very nice and apologetic. He did seem to help ease the tension but then not only did a server and a cook come out to "apologize" they basically told us that because we didn't order per their system we were the ones who screwed it all up. Now having never been there before we were pretty clueless to their system of ordering. The food on the other hand was great! Some things were somewhat cool that should have been hot but tasted great. Overall I would go there again but with 3-4 people MAX! Don't expect fast service at all. read more

ETA: I appreciate the response and understand that quality ingredients have a higher cost. My review was based on my perception of value/cost, in other words how much I enjoyed the dish considering how much I had to pay for it. Organic and local doesn't necessarily mean great flavor. Some people, or I should say a LOT of people love your food and don't mind paying the price. I am just part of the minority that felt paying too much for something I didn't enjoy. I will consider deleting my review since my intention was just to offer a different opinion and not to hurt your business in any way. I can see you take pride in what you do and that's a big part of providing good customer service and that's something I value and believe every restaurant needs more of. -------------- The place has good ambience and the bakery section makes you want to order one of everything. We got a few samples and they were okay. I am actually surprised of the 200+ positive reviews...they were the reason we decided to try this place out but we were very disappointed. I ordered shrimp tacos, nothing special, the sauce was not good at all. The size didn't justified the $20 price. I have tried this dish in many different places and this would be last one on my list and probably the most expensive. Even bonefish grill has much better tacos for about $13. A very unique restaurant a friend and I found on the way back from Luray Caverns. I needed something with vegetarians and this place had some which I was almost surprised. I remember walking in and being in awe at the overall presence of the restaurant. This was my first time driving out west and so as I traveled and ventured , I got to experience many different places . I remember the owner I believe she was so kind and so we're the other staff memebers. Our food came out in a reasonable time and they also had these peanut butter chocolate chip cookies that were AMAZING. There was also this GIANT picnic table that was taller than me that was reallly cool. I had to literally high jump to get up there. It made for a good picture but an uncomfortable way for me to eat and socialize. I really enjoyed the hospitality ! Me and the lady are enjoying our catfish and shrimp tacos and the owner comes out. He's got a huge smile on his face cuz he knows we're loving it. I look at him and tell him "this is absolutely phenomenal" he sticks his hand out to fist bump me and says "here we're gonna feed you real food", then makes a small jesters with his hand, "with a little bit of love." Probably the best restaurant in Front Royal, and well deserving of its high ranking on yelp and other reviews. Our lunches were all excellent (Cuban and club sandwiches and one of their salads). I like that they source locally, emphasize fresh ingredients and bake their own bread and cookies (yum yum). Strong yelp reviews led us to the Blue Wing Frog on a recent trip to Front Royal. The location is very casual, and to honest, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out when we walked in the door. It exceeded every expectation. The husband and wife owners were engaging and really friendly. They were so excited to share their food with us. Everything we ordered was fantastic...We got the fruit/cheese/salami platter, some hummus, the spicy shrimp, and the chicken salad. It was all wonderful!! I would definitely return - or better yet, have them pack a picnic lunch next time we're in the area. read more

My husband and I visited Blue Wing Frog yesterday as we passed through Front Royal. Once seated I was tempted to leave because I thought the prices were rather high for lunch. My husband convinced me to stay and boy am I glad he did. I had the very best grilled cheese sandwich ($ 9.00) I have ever eaten! It was like eating hot apple pie with cheddar cheese on top. I ordered it because it had apples as well as cheddar cheese on oatmeal and fruit bread, all grilled to perfection. The sandwich was enormous -- enough to take home half for dinner that night. It was served with grapes and watermelon. The food is outstanding; I left very happy and with a loaf of oatmeal and fruit bread -- made on the premises. Amazing food...flavors are fantastic! Great veggie options - like a veggie burger (made from real food like veggies and lentils!) and roasted veggie sandwich with hummus. Food was ok. The mustard on the Cubano was delicious, but the bread was toasted crisp and kept falling apart. My wife's chicken salad sandwich kept falling apart. She couldn't even pick it up. My sons burger was pretty good, but it took 40 min to come out. Everyone was polite, but the service was so slow, despite the place being relatively empty (11:30am on a Sunday). Delightful, clearly locally owned, labor of love! The food is so well prepared and presented. So different from a lot of my travels around the states. A truly unique "picnic" style place. Wooden utensils were fun. Very "green" with their recycling. I had an heirloom tomato with quinoa salad. my son had a wonderful burger that was grass fed beef, homemade slaw and even homemade ketchup. My daughter had a "grown up" peanut butter sandwich on fresh specialty bread and apples. Just a gem. A must see. The only downfall was that it did take awhile for us to get our food. Definitely did not expect to stumble across such a phenomenal little place in Front Royal! After a grueling hike, a couple friends and I found ourselves here (thanks for the guidance, Yelp!) and ordered from across the entire menu. I ordered the Goat Cheese Dip, which was everything I'd hoped it would be, and Blue Wing Burger, which was meaty, big, and perfect. I don't remember exactly what my friends ordered, but we were all completely satisfied with our entrees and the delicious sides (spicy slaw, cheddar potato salad, french fries....). We even ordered dessert, with the highlight being the gluten-free baklava. Lastly, I ordered a chai tea to-go, which was almost as good as it is in India. :) Not only was the food great, but the owners were so friendly. They helped us pick a nice bottle of wine and provided guidance on our dessert choices. You could just tell how much they care about not only their restaurant, but about their customers. They were proud of the food they served (and rightly so!) and were knowledgeable about all of their locally-sourced products. They chatted with us throughout most of our meal and even took photos of us. It was just such a wonderful, friendly, and delicious experience. Only downside was that it was unexpectedly pricey considering it is in Front Royal, but it was worth every penny! I can't wait to visit Blue Wing Frog after my next hike in the Shenandoah! I had the grown up Peanut butter and it was definitely one of the best I've had - homemade peanut butter, homemade bread, and apples, walnuts, honey, raisins and other goodies inside. If you are driving between JMU and Northern VA, stop here for a delicious meal. The time we visited there was a SNAFU in the kitchen, but the food was worth the wait. This quirky but friendly place has a great selection of craft beers and VA wines although I wish the beer and wine were a bit less pricey. It would have been five stars but there is a slight air of staff struggling to keep things together in this place - good intentions not quite matched by the level of execution, so go in with a relaxed attitude and support this unique family-owned enterprise. read more
