I've been driving through the LC for years. Never stopped in Upper Lake except for the casino. No surprise that I've been wasting time and money at that stop. Now I have a new favorite. This was a pleasant surprise and will definitely be suggesting and stopping here in my travels. The friendly and quick service was spot on. Food was delicious! I will gladly support a local business who cares that their food must rise above mediocre. Ambiance was a like an alternate reality. Old style saloon, nice outdoor patio with an old country feel, historic hotel, and a live string band. Live music that we did not expect on a Tuesday evening. Driving from Yosemite to the northern redwoods we decided to stop at the blue lakes. We yelped this town and found this restaurant and previous reviewers were spot on. This place had the decor of an old saloon (though clean ), ambience was super welcoming and the staff was really welcoming and genuinely really nice. We started with salads and calamari and then I had the winter risotto and all the food was so well prepared. The variety in my salad was lovely, perfectly sized bites and perfectly dressed. The risotto was filled with delicious mushroom and squash, none over or undercooked, and the shaved cheese really made it for me. You could taste all the ingredients, always a feat for any chef! Ate there today. Food was pretty good, staff was friendly, but... Sitting outside there were a lot of flies, but at least some nice live music. Most unforgivable was the person at the next table by himself continuously loudly FaceTiming people. Incredibly rude, especially when you're there to relax and listen to the live music. I asked the waitstaff to speak with him, maybe to stop with being on the speakerphone, and they just didn't seem to see what the problem was. They said they'd speak to the manager, but nothing came of it and he kept making calls. Ruined it for me, so we ate quickly and left. Waitstaff should know how to politely ask their guests to not disrupt others. I still give 3 stars (and tipped) because I don't believe in review bombing, and waitstaff needs to make a living. read more

We come here 2-3 times a year when we visit Ft Bragg Always a great experience. Usually sit in the bar and have a great lunch while either catching up on the news from the newspaper on the counter or the score of the game on the tv. Fantastic food, friendly service and a really nice, comfortable setting. I only come back to Lake County once a year around the holidays to visit family, and whenever we wanted to go out for a really good meal, we would leave town. I don't know how Blue Wing eluded my Yelp searches for so long, but not anymore! We went for Sunday brunch and were immediately impressed by the interior of the cafe. All dark wood from the floors to the walls, and a beautiful full bar in the center of the room (will have to return for a drink). Our server was very nice and helpful and kept my iced tea full. We both ordered eggs benedict, but we decided to split a calamari first. The calamari was very good. Not too crispy, but the squid was nice and tender and not rubbery at all. The garlic and ranchero aiolis were both delicious. The eggs benedict came with both ham and bacon which I thought was fantastic. The eggs were perfectly poached and runny, the way eggs are meant to be! The potatoes were really well seasoned, a nice surprise since many places just fry them up plain. The waitress talked my mom into getting some Italian donuts (zeppole) to go (she didn't exactly have to twist her arm) and she loved them. Overall this place was fantastic and a real diamond in the rough. The prices were steep for Lake County, but very much on par with what I would expect if Blue Wing was in Santa Rosa. Best choice when traveling between Sacramento and the North Coast. Highway 20 between I-5 and U.S. 101 is a food wasteland except for the Blue Wing. We've stopped several times, the latest just before Thanksgiving traveling with our dog Lulu so we had to sit on the patio under the heaters shielded from the rain by the roof overhang. Open patio on warmer days this is the preferred area for sure. Our server was friendly and efficient. Fantastic coffee. Food above average. My wife and I both had the burger plate ($15), cooked medium rare. She chose Clam Chowder and I went for the Fries. Tasty. We will be back! read more

I truly enjoyed the chicken and root vegetables last year. This year the recipie changed and was ok but wasn't as fabulous as last year. The peppermint white russian was so good according to my daughter who got the classic burger again. For desert we split a burbon butterscotch pudding which was perfect small bite to share for the end of the meal. Lemonade was tart but nothing a little sugar wouldnt fix. We have been to Clear Lake two years in a row for our anniversary and we usually stay at a B&B in Nice. We have been to numerous restaurants in the area but honestly they're not all that good. Blue Wing Saloon is the exception. (In our opinion) the only decent restaurant in the entire Clear Lake area is Blue Wing. We have been here 3 or 4 times now. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a lot of history to tell. It is also very clean, including the bathrooms. The staff has always been very nice and attentive. We love sitting outside on the patio or in the courtyard. The atmosphere is fun. We also enjoy having a few drinks at the bar. They introduced me to Moscow Mules but with Jameson instead of vodka and I've been hooked ever since lol. They have a good selection of microbrews on tap as well. The food is delicious, my favorite is the bacon wrapped meatloaf, I have gotten it 3/4 times haha. My husband also loves it as well. I dont like mashed potatoes so they're always willing to substitute more veggies or sweet potato fries. I also have had the lamb shank which was very delicious and very tender. It had really good flavor and is definitely a good choice for me when I want to stray from the meatloaf. I also love the calamari, they cook it perfectly, its not under cooked but not overcooked and chewy. read more

We dirt bike ride ride in the Upper Lake /Penny Pines area quite often & had noticed the Blue WIng about five years ago & finally stoped in recently. After a long day on the bikes a cold one was in order. Burgers were good,although spendy. Freindly bartender & servers. The professionally restored antique Tallman hotel next to the Blue Wing is outstanding . Rooms in in the main hotel & the addtional units are loaded with quality furniture,comfy beds & are nice and quiet. Pool & mature grounds make this a relaxing place. The Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe opened in 2005 . . . . for the 2nd time. The first time was in the 1880's. They were closed down in 1920 by Prohibition. With the flare that only someone who appreciates the history of these former popular establishments, the 1880's watering hole was refurbished and reopened in 21st century style two years ago. There's inside seating and a lovely old wooden bar, plus porch seating and lovely garden seating. The service was very friendly and efficient. This is the first time I have been to the Blue Wing, but Saturday night a friend and I had an absolutely incredible meal there. If they had food & service problems there earlier this year and in 2006, they most definitely have cleaned up their act. It was WONDERFUL! For dinner my friend had the salmon and she practically licked the plate it was so good; and I had the signature meat loaf and mashed potatoes. Two huge pieces of excellent meat loaf and a huge pile of fresh mashed potatoes. Oh my! There was so much food, there was no way I could finish it. It was a rare treat - - quality & quantity. We shared a house salad - not a green leaf was left and had their special carrot cake for dessert. I licked that plate! We drank an entire bottle of a yummy local Lake County white wine (Ceago Del Lago) and finished our meal with two cups of just right coffee. ("Just right" definition: Very fresh, strong and of good bean quality.) We truly have found a place we will return and will even drive two hours north to return to as often as we possibly can. This morning, after checking out of the Tallman Hotel, which is right next door to the Blue Wing, we sat in the garden adirondack chairs next to the fountain with mimosas and listened to a wonderful live funky Jazz / Blues / 70's band. Not only did we get no attention at all from our server, she had the audacity to charge us for the extra plate of salad SHE mistakenly put in AFTER we were told to keep it from another server when we addressed the issue since SHE was nowhere to be found It's not the extra plate of salad or having to pay for it, it's the principle! This is probably the best restaurant you can find on the north side of Clear Lake. The food and service is top notch, and not at all what I expected when I first looked the place up. We have been here a few times over the past couple years and each time was better than the prior. The patio is fantastic during the summer and spring, and the weekends has live music with a local band that records their podcast from the Blue Wing. The food is really very nice. We have tried the Grilled Bone-In Pork Chop, Pan Roasted Chicken, Little Gem Wedge Salad (an excellent shared plate option!), and House Smoked Steelhead starter. The chicken uses Mary's organic and was cooked to perfection, as was the pork chop. The pork chop was tender and juicy, and paired well with cheesy grits. We don't plan on being back to the area soon, but will be coming here when we do. read more

We stopped here for lunch on our way up to Mendocino for the weekend. They had been on the itinerary (what is the point of vacation without an itinerary?) since Sam S. saw the photo of the wedge salad right here on Yelp. I really wish this place was somewhere else, maybe somewhere that wasn't completely deserted come December, because frankly, I found Upper Lake to be suuuuuuuper creepy. Granted, it was a Thursday, in December, so I didn't expect it to be bustling, but we saw about 7 other people total while we strolled up and down the little main street. It gave me the heebie jeebies. Ghost Town reservation aside, this place was tasty. Sam S., as anticipated, got the wedge salad and was more than happy with the ample amounts of bacon, bleu cheese, and walnuts covering the crunchy bunch of roughage. I went with the grilled chicken sandwich, topped with incredibly yummy bacon and gooey provolone on just-toasted-enough sourdough. The fries are thin, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Check out the photo. Cute little bathroom, nice and clean. If it had been warmer, we definitely would have sat outside on the deck in the garden, so pretty! The service was alright, though not over welcoming, and the water had a funky taste I couldn't place, but otherwise, I loved the Blue Wing. Such a amazing gem to find in this small town. Great wait staff. Great food. We started with the Salt and Pepper Calamari and it was the best Calamari we've ever had! For entrees my husband had the bison BBQ burger with salt and pepper fries and I had the pan seared scallops. We loved our meals. The broccoli rab and the rice were great accompaniments to the scallops. Only complaint - I would have loved more than three scallops on the plate because they were so good. Can't wait to stop here again the next time we are traveling through to Fort Bragg. read more

Great food! I had a caprese chicken sandwich and it was perfect. The chicken was moist, the pesto was fantastic and the mozzarella was delicious. I subbed the sweet potato fries for the regular fries - they were the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. Why not 5 stars? Service was slow on a Monday afternoon. It seemed like they received several groups at about the same time and the kitchen struggled to get the food out in a reasonable time. I will say that when served, the food was hot and fresh. Outdoor seating is offered. The place is set up as a bar and restaurant, but in a tasteful way. The bar is obvious but not overwhelming. Overall it has a really nice vibe. Great stop! read more
