I have been going to Blueberry Moon for a number of years now and always been happy with their services, but now that they did my wedding hair, I will always have love for this salon. I had been getting my hair cut and styled by Kennedie for a long time. When she left the salon a few months before my wedding, I was sort of crushed. I figured this was one of the things people warn you about while you are wedding planning - "be prepared for something to go very wrong" they say. I freaked out, but the owner was super nice and suggested that their stylist Ryan should do my hair instead and that everything would still be amazing. It was! As soon as I met Ryan at my bridal trial, my anxiety was gone. He really knows hair and did the style exactly like what I wanted. He's seriously the best. The day of my rehearsal, I had a blowout and a mani pedi. They kept me hydrated with plenty of water and tea while I relaxed and had an awesome afternoon of pampering to kickoff the weekend The next day was my styling, first thing. We were worried about my style staying since I had my hair done on the day of the wedding pretty early and it was a pretty windy day, so Ryan honestly did everything in his power to make sure the curls wouldn't fall too much and that I would look amazing even after many hours of pictures and hugs. Even after the entire day and a lot of dancing, my hair held up and looked amazing. Looking at pictures toward the end of the night, I can't believe how well it stayed. I loved my style and had so many compliments on it, but I still looked like a more glam version of me, not someone else. They also did my mother and my sister's hairstyles - they loved them and looked gorgeous. Everything was perfect. Ryan is so talented and on top of that he is so nice and easy to talk to. Jennie the owner was responsive and so helpful in the scheduling and planning. Christina did my nails and she was so great as well. I have lots of hair and I mean A LOT of hair! My skin is also very sensitive and dry. So, after using Pantene on my hair for months and cheap moisturizer because I have been trying to not splurge on products, I finally decided that enough was enough and went back to my Aveda products that I love so much. I was planning on going to the Aveda store, but came across Blueberry Moon on a recent Lincoln Park shopping trip and I am so glad I did. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by friendly faces who asked me what I needed and gave me the best moisturizer and shampoo that I have ever used for my dry skin and hair. He has been doing my hair color for the last year and he does a beautiful multi-dimensional blonde and some pretty hot reds too. Every time it is flawless. (Doesn't hurt that his personality is pure postive energy). Amazing colorist. My favorite in this whole city. Only negative is the parking kinda sucks. But if you drive around long enough you usually can luck out and find a spot. Just make sure your a few minutes early just in case. read more

I booked a last minute 90 minute Swedish massage because my back was/is a train wreck and I was desperate for help. The receptionist was very nice an accommodating, managing to squeeze me in at the end of the day. My massage therapist was Miles and he was FANTASTIC... so good that I hesitated mentioning his name because I don't want to have trouble booking him again. But since it was one of the best massages I have ever had, he deserves to be mentioned. Plus there are all sorts of the lovely amenities during the massage - a pre-massage foot soak and scrub, the heated table with a nice fluffy blanket, a cooling eye mask at the end of the session. I have to add an update for a couple of reasons: 1. I had a deep tissue massage with Blum last week. He has the most gifted hands I've ever felt. I've never had a massage where I wanted to make "oooh that feels so good" noises (think Monica from Friends - oops!), but I consciously had to stop myself from making them because it felt that good. He listened to everything I said about my problem spots pre-massage and my body has not felt this great in a long time. 2. My friend took me to another salon/spa over the weekend to get a mani/pedi. I honestly didn't realize before my experience at the other place on Sunday how much customer service truly means. Spending money on beauty treatments is a nice treat, but I always kind of feel guilty doing it. When I go to Blueberry, the experience from the time you step in the door is awesome and I truly get my money's worth. At this other place, the whole experience was miserable due to a total lack of being customer service oriented. I just want to stress to everyone what a fantastic colorist Jeff Hughes is in my opinion. I had been going to him for nearly 10 years; followed him from the 'burbs to the Aveda school, then to Blueberry Moon. I've moved since December and have seen 3 different colorists to get my blonde hair done and all have failed in comparison - and that includes one in Washington DC that was ranked one of the top colorists in the nation! He does blonde like he is one (in a good way!), and he is by far the best colorist I've ever had. You can explain to him exactly what you want in layman's terms and he will understand. If it's not exactly right he will tweak it for you asap and make sure it is what you wanted (that happened only once though in the 9+ years I had seen him!) So stop shopping around and just go to Jeff if you're looking for someone to do blonde coloring perfectly. read more

I bought the Groupon for the Ultimate Hands and Feet Spa Package last year, and then I promptly forgot about it. When Groupon sent me a reminder email, I saw it, and figured it would be a great birthday pampering for myself. Because I tortured myself by working on my birthday this year, I made my appointment for the day after. I was lucky enough to get the only free parking spot available on Halsted when I arrived for my appointment. I figured that must be a good omen for how the rest of my time there would go, but I think I was actually more excited about the parking spot than my time at the salon. Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh. My nail tech was Cristina, and she's really nice. We had fun chatting about silly Chicago policies and makeup and all things girly. She did a pretty good job on my nails -- they ended up a little longer and rounder than I generally prefer, but the polish looked great. Which takes me to my next point: the polish selection isn't very large. I wish they would have had more variety in the colors if nothing else. You can have a small selection as long as all the colors don't all look similar. Beachy is what I think they are going for with the decor, which was really confusing to me considering their name does not even *hint* at a beach escape. The front desk staff, although wearing all black (standard for an Aveda salon), faded into the decor. No personality whatsoever. I felt like they were just going through the motions. Considering that I can get a mani-pedi closer to home that's a little more detail oriented and MUCH less expensive, I don't think I'll be back. The regular price is $190, and that's just too rich for my blood. read more

Jeff is my saviour! During my most recent adventure in hair modeling, I received a godawful ombre look at another salon. Even though I gave the woman pictures, and told her exactly what I did and didn't want, she left me with yellow, dip-dyed, overly processed, damaged, "Jersey Shore" hair (that last descriptor courtesy of my mother). I tried to deal with it gracefully, increasing the frequency of trims to slowly get rid of the offending color, but by October I'd finally had enough. Most fortuitously, my company held a raffle to raise money for an AIDS walk, and I won a color service with Jeff. I booked an appointment for the next possible day (yesterday), and the rest, as they say, is history. I didn't really need to explain to Jeff what went wrong with my color; it was clear that I needed to tone down the blonde. He thoroughly explained two possible plans of action, and we decided to tone everything, not just the blonde. It took no time at all (maybe 5 minutes of application, 20 of processing, then wash and blowout), and when I saw the final product, I could have cried. It's a gorgeous, slightly coppery chocolate with just slightly lighter ends, which does only good (no, awesome!) things for my pale skin and blue eyes. I just saw it this morning in full sunlight, and it is radiant. God, I wish I had this color naturally! I don't want to become someone who regularly colors her hair, but really, I've fallen in love with myself all over again. read more

So I had a groupon for an aveda green science facial plus a bunch of add-ons, and I wasn't in any hurry until I found out I was soon to move out of Chicago. I made an appointment with Liz and I have to say she did a wonderful job. She explained the whole process and provided a calm and relaxing environment. I believe I fell asleep for half an hour - that's always a good sign! Esthetician: 5 Stars Front Desk Staff: 2 Stars Blueberry Moon is a participant in the Pretty City Green and Gorgeous promotion. I was looking for an affordable spa to try out my first wrap experience and found them online. First off, they were able to accommodate my same day appointment request which was a plus. For $79, I got a rosemary mint wrap which came with a dry scrub, wrap, and massage. My esthetician was great, and was kind enough to explain every step of the process to me. It was a relaxing service and I left feeling refreshed. The only downside was that I felt like I was treated differently by the front desk staff since I did a promotion instead of paying full price. When I checked out, the lady up front was rushing me. First off, she failed to give me a promotional punch card even though they were right there for everyone else. I basically had to ask for a price list and card to get any attention. Second, according to the Pretty City promotion, I was suppose to receive a cute tote bag since I took part in the promotion... I didn't even though I saw the bags were out there. It's too bad they didn't want to treat me well up front as I had been looking for a spa to go to on a more regular basis. I wouldn't mind checking out this place in the future but won't rush to go back. read more

Ok, so I keep coming back here! Last week, I got my first haircut. Andrea did a great job. She listened to what I want and executed beautifully. I've gotten a bunch of compliments! Last night, I had my color touched up by Katie. I told her to go a little brighter this time because I am feeling bold. She did a beautiful job. All the other stylists were admiring it. Yay Katie! Plus, they gave me two glasses of blueberry lemonade. Yum! Also, I now have a whole cabinet full of Aveda products. The new shampoo system for dry hair is AMAZING! Had my sister in town this last weekend and we both decided it was time for a new cut and color for each of us. We figured we wouldn't have much finding a salon on a holiday weekend that could take both of us but Blueberry Moon could! Not only are they open on Sundays (great for out of city commuters like me) they also stay open until 9pm during the week. Michelle did my highlights and I must say they look fabulous, probably the best in a long time. Ryan, their master stylist, cut my hair and I really love it. He listened to what I wanted but also gave some great suggestions. My sister got a beautiful color job done by Jeff (I think ?) and a nice cut by Sarah. On top of it, my sister's boyfriend enjoyed a great 60 minute massage while we were getting our hair done and ranted and raved about it. Prices are comparable to other salons in the city. I learned the hard way why it's cheap to go to a salon academy: you have to save $ on the first round to afford the second round elsewhere. After whining to every friend I could reach about my unfortunate purple-hued tresses and zig zag bangs, I called Blueberry Moon and continued to whine until they let me come in for a color consult the next morning. (side note: I ended up at Blueberry Moon because of the favorable Yelp reviews and the name. Yep. I'm a sucker for marketing). Jeff (who is adorable and funny and I love him in a non-creepy I-just-met-you-and-you-don't-like-girls-not-to-mention-I'm-married sort of way), sympathized, consulted on the actual intended color and fixed my now brown hair lickety-split. I then tried to convince Grace (colorists do color, stylists style...go figure) to fix my bangs by cutting them more which I now realize would give me a modified mullet and/or further the "my 6 year old sister cut my hair" sort of look. I was warned NOT to get antsy and try and fix them myself and instead told to come back in 2 weeks to start the re-shaping. And I will. And then I'll come back again, and hopefully again, paycheck permitting. In sum: 1. Everyone I met at the salon, I liked. And they clearly liked each other and they're jobs. At the unnamed academy where the recently dubbed "Bang Situation of 2011" occurred, the stylist next to my gal yelled at her (my gal, that is) and gave her the stink eye during my time in the chair (in retrospect, maybe she was trying to warn me with her stare...). 2. My hair looks good. Or as good as it possibly can given the mess above my eyebrows. Jeff clearly knows his shit. 3. Price. Totally reasonable. Jeff who is one of the more senior peeps still only cost me $75 for the fix. Not too bad. Thanks, team! read more

Absolutely love this place. I've been going here for a few years now and have gotten quite the variety of treatments here - manicure, pedicure, haircut, highlights, facial, and waxing. Everything I've done here, I've been nothing but impressed. The space itself is fairly small but provides more of a relaxed and intimate setting than some other big salons or spas. The manicure/pedicure area they have is small - only room for 2 pedicures at a time - but very relaxing and clean. The area is decorated with beautiful stones and one of the most aesthetically pleasing pedicure stations I've seen in Chicago. They have a good variety of nail polish colors as well, including no chip manicure colors, though the color variety is less than other larger spas or nail studios. As far as their other spa services go, I've been very impressed. I've gotten both facials and waxings done and private rooms are clean and the estheticians are very professional and friendly at the same time. I've also gotten my hair cut and highlighted here and have been very pleased with the results. It is a little pricey but I think you get what you pay for. read more

My regular stylist was on a long vacation and I was desperate. Read the reviews and thought why not? I asked for a partial highlight. Not platinum but nice blonde for summer. What I got was an orange-ish muddy color. I was horrified. And dumbfounded. I'm in my regular stylist chair right now. He showed me bleeding of color on my hair, huge chunks missed and the bigger problem was that it didn't sit long enough thus the orange color. On top of that the stylist left me and worked on someone else--the intern tried to blow out/dry my hair. You know after you leave the salon your hair feels like silk and you swear you could be a hair model? Well not this time. My hair felt course, wasn't straight but frizzy and wavy, plus wasn't even styled. I'm glad others have had good experiences. Me not so much. read more

For starters, I have had a hard time finding a salon in the city that wasn't over priced and the staff wasn't snobby. Living in the Gold Coast that was common to see.Until I came to Blueberry Moon! I was welcomed into the store by not one, but 3 girls behind the desk all eager to help. They offered my the typical beverage and walked me right over to a chair. .although I was late (oops!) and thanks to my colorist for letting me keep my appointment, since it can be hard to get into see a good one! I came in for a highlight only. I chose my colorist Frankie because she was recommended to me by a friend and through an acquaintance.Frankie was great! First we had the discussion of what I wanted to see happen at this visit. We browsed through the swatches of color options and came up with a game plan. Jumping right to the results, Frankie was spot on. Not only did she get my color the way I wanted it, I left with awesome color not a bleach out! I really liked how professional yet personal she was. And I really enjoyed our conversation! What I really loved is that the highlight didn't last 4 hours! She knew what she was doing and you can tell because she was efficient! While I was processing, Marshall came over and game me a hand massage! It was amazing! Marshall and Frankie also came to check on me numerous times. Right before my shampoo I realized that I didn't leave time on the meter. Marshall ran out to fill it! Even offered to put in quarters of his if I didn't have any.. I luckily did have tons. It just astounded me how much customer service skill they have, and it was genuine! The experience was top notch and the talent is exceptional. I just moved to Chicago and have been looking for a new salon to fall in love with. I made an appointment, out of the blue, for a sports manicure...just so I could check the place out. I LOVE IT! The customer service is great. There's no waiting around to be acknowledged...the receptionist greeted my promptly, asked if she could take my bag and pointed me toward the magazine rack (if I was interested). I was very early for my appointment (oh, public transportation) but I didn't wait for long. Christina was ready for me after only 5 minutes of waiting. The manicure was great and so was Christina's company. She took the time to chat with me and get to know me but she was also very thorough and efficient with the manicure. I wasn't wanting a long appointment...and I didn't get one...she got me out of there, with soft hands and shiny nails, in a jiffy!!! I needed to get a haircut and decided to go and try out this salon. I got my cut by Ryan, he was really nice and social but I felt that he needed a little more experience with bangs. I don't know if they are side bangs or not and really I've just had to pin them back, he did do a decent job with the rest of my hair. A colleague recommended this salon, and I gave it as she has very similar hair as I do. I have fairly long hair and have had trouble with stylists wanting to cut off much more than I could go for. So I went in with pretty high expectations, and Blueberry Moon did not disappoint! Andrea is amazing! She would not even think of grabbing the scissors before getting a good idea of what I wanted, how I like to wear my hair, etc. She cut off exactly the amount she said she would. And she was super fast at blow drying straight my curly-wavy hair, which had never been as straight as it was after Andrea got done with it. Nina, one of the interns, gave me a superb hand massage! The first time I made my appointment at Blueberry Moon, I was asked what type of hair I had so that they could pair me with someone who could provide the best service for me. NEVER has any other salon asked me that and I was impressed! I was scheduled with Courtney and have been requesting her ever since my first visit! She is great! Exactly the type of stylist I need. She is 110% honest with me. When I went in to tell her what (I thought) I wanted, she was able to make SURE I was comfortable. She suggested a style that complimented me WAY better than what I thought. Everyone I know has told me how amazing my hair is- ever since I have been having it cut by Courtney. Prior to my experience at Blueberry Moon I have pretty much had the SAME haircut for the past 27 years. Courtney was able to help me think outside the box when it comes to my hair. I now, get different types of haircuts and I couldn't be happier! Thanks Courtney! The salon isn't very large but it is very professional and clean. While I am there, someone is always willing to offer you a drink, and hand massage. Someone is always sweeping hair off the ground, changing the towels, and checking the shampoo/conditioner supply in the shampoo area. That shows they have good employees that have a great work ethic, and I always know I will get great service each and every time. If you read my reviews, you would know that I am never satisfied with my haircut and overly critical with my hair. Sometimes I am a little scared to venture out and try someplace new because someone can butcher your hair...and that's not always good, is it? Unfortunately my regular stylist was gone on vacation, and I needed a last minute emergency haircut before my big interview. I called several places and finally Blueberry Moon was the only place opened until 9 pm, which is a big PLUS if you work late like a normal adult. I was paired with Courtney, who was not super chatty and kind of cool. I actually appreciated her not being chatty because I hate making meaningless conversations. I ended up cutting 2 inches off my hair, and I LOVE IT! Granted now it's super hard to maintain, but it's my fault for not knowing how to style hair... The customer service here is superb. From the warm welcoming at the front desk, to the free hand massage, the atmosphere here is definitely very relaxing. I didn't know it was cash only for tips, but they were nice enough to let me return the next day to drop of some mulah. I went to Marla for color correction on my ombre. I have dark brunette hair, and she listened to everything I wanted and did an excellent job on my color. It's really easy to have ombre-gone-wrong, but since Marla colored my hair, I've gotten nothing but compliments. They're also very accommodating when making an appointment. I had to squeeze in a root touch up a day before an interview, and even though Marla wasn't available, they were able to squeeze me in on short notice. I saw Frank, who did an excellent job as well. I've only done color here, but after two great experiences, I will be back to try a cut as well. read more

My regular colorist/friend suffered an injury that interfered with her being able to do hair, so since I've been meaning to give Blueberry Moon a try, I scheduled an appointment with Brittany. Now, in the interest of full disclosure: my sister works as an esthetician there, BUT aside from saying hello to her, my experience did not involve her; so I don't feel conflicted offering an honest review. Continuing on: The color I wanted for my hair was pretty simple, but Brittany still took the time to discuss my preferences and how my hair tends to react to color. I absolutely love how the color turned out, and it's perfectly shiny and even as promised. Marla, the intern, had the task of blowing out my moderately curly locks post-color. I have to say, I don't think I've ever loved a blow-out so much in my life. I wish I could have her come do my hair a few times a week! I moved to Lincoln Park in August, and I had to begin the search for a new hair stylist. I have thick wavy/curly hair which makes it challenging to find a stylist I can trust. I turned to Yelp for guidance on finding a salon. After one not so hot experience at another salon, Blueberry Moon met my high expectations. Taylor was my stylist, and she is relatively new to the salon. She was friendly, kind, and made just the right amount of conversation. I typically ask to have my layers cleaned up and the ends trimmed. She took my input but knew how to manipulate my hair so it would look best. After a thorough cut, she blew out my hair. My hair looked great-- healthy and full of volume! She also took time to give me tips on how do blow-dry my hair at home to give it the same effect. Nicole saved my hair today, and she did it with ease and skill! My usual stylist failed me when my balayage turned out spotty, uneven, and streaky. Nicole was able to make my hair beautiful and blended again. In the consultation she listened to all of my concerns and was able to address all of them. Let's not forget the amazing head and hand massage - so relaxing! I don't normally purchase products, but Nicole showed me a product that said would actually prolong my hair and keep me from having to come back as soon! Woo low maintenance! I do a basic trim, but she is always able to let me know if there is something else I could do, such as take weight off of my layers etc. The receptionist(s) are always friendly! I went here and had a pretty poor experience. Even though I had booked my haircut and color together, it somehow ended up that I had an hour wait between the two. The color job was mediocre. The next day I already noticed a difference between my hair that had previous color in it and the roots that needed color added to them. It looked really mismatched and she must have mistimed how long to leave the color in. The girl who cut my hair took FOREVER. She cut my bangs and probably did one of the worst jobs ever and I ended up cutting them myself at home. This was over a year ago. I have since found some one else who is AMAZING. I was in Chicago for Thanksgiving visiting family, and I was in desperate need of a haircut and highlights. They squeezed me in for both on last-minute notice. The stylist, Frank, was amazing. We had a long discussion about the highlights. He did an amazing job. Another stylist (whose name I can't remember) cut my hair. She also talked with me about what I wanted (shorter, less heavy), and she did a great job. Best cut and highlights that I've had in a long time. I used to go to Blueberry Moon to get my hair done - I really liked the colorist I had, but I did find it to be a little annoying to schedule your haircut and color with 2 different people. I do realize that this is their business model but overall I'm not a fan of that system. So because of that and beause I no longer work in the neighborhood I just stopped going. Recently I purchased a groupon for a green godess facial and found the service to be ok but not impressive - I felt like the service was a little rushed and overall the regular price is very expensive for what it is (I believe the regular price was 175 dollars). I also had a pedicure there which was very nice, but again too expensive for what it is. I've had the same quality of work for much less at nail salons throughout the city. So overall the place is not bad but just very overpriced and the services don't seem to be very exceptional. read more

It breaks my heart to write this because I love Blueberry Moon and I love their manicures, and I love how sweet everything smells in there and how delicious their tea is. But I strongly dislike whoever messed up my appointment. I was going out of town for my engagement party (a big deal for a gal, right?), so I had made an appointment the night before we left for a non-chip manicure. When I showed up they had scheduled me for the next week! Imagine how upsetting this is to a girl who has over 100 people attending an engagement party, bought a new dress, got her hair done, and is going to have all 100 people looking at her ring... and she doesn't have a manicure because someone messed up at the front desk. No I didn't have time to go get another one, and no I didn't want to reschedule. I was leaving in roughly 14 hours and given that there are no awesome 24 hour spas, I was left with nothing. They tried to refer me to other salons, which I did not have time to make it to, but overall this was terribly disappointing. So, while you will get an awesome mani / pedi, don't depend on them to schedule it properly if you have a big event (like an engagement party). read more

First off, I've been going here for years. Ryan O. is the only person in Chicago I trust with my hair. He's extremely talented and friendly. The salon is nice, and in addition to amazing cuts, I've also used their bikini waxing services. They are quite kind and as gentle as possible while still being thorough. I've found every stylist or waxer I've worked with to be great. However, they don't get a full 5 stars because of their scheduling. I've used their online system, and it works, but takes several steps because you have to pre-pay. The scheduling does sometimes glitch, both online and when you book at the salon or over the phone. I've run into issues where I was booked at different times than I intended to be booked at--it is more software than staff related. Just double check if it's a biggie, like an engagement or wedding appointment. read more
