I have been going to one salon exclusively for waxing since I moved to Chicago and decided to give JJs a try after walking by several times. I will definitely be coming back! The atmosphere is not super fancy- basic equipment for the work that they do with a few deco pieces here and there. You have to ring a bell to get into the front door where you are then greeted by whoever is at the front desk and led to a room. The rooms do not have walls that reach the ceiling and you are able to hear what is going on in the room next to you. After I was led to my room, I was left alone with no instructions to undress and had no idea when my waxer would be back- but luckily I knew what I was doing. A few minutes later, she yelled from the front desk to ask if I was ready and entered the room when I was. The wax was quick and professional without much side chatter. Overall, they do exactly the job you need done for a great price. I would not recommend JJs to anyone who is getting a bikini or Brazilian for the first time since the service leaves you scratching your head a bit and they were not clear on what they needed from me as a client. It does not provide a high-class, spa environment but if you want to get in and out for a great, quick wax-JJs is the place to go! read more

I found this salon through Yelp while looking for a relatively inexpensive waxing option and as usual, the yelp community came through! I booked an appointment online for 6:15 PM on a Friday for a lower leg waxing ($30) and underarm waxing ($17). I received confirmations via email and text to confirm my appointment with Esther An. Esther An is pleasant, meticulous, and speedy. The whole set up is very sanitary - a halogen lamp, no double dipping, and wax that doesn't scald you. I was in and out in 20 minutes with as painless an experience as ripping hair out their follicles with boiling hot wax can be. My only minor complaint is that I was there at 6:15 and had to wait till 6:25. JJ waxing also has loyalty punch cards for eyebrow and bikini waxing. I discovered it about 5 years ago based on the great Yelp reviews and affordable prices and have been going here ever since, even though it's not the most convenient location for me. There are several things I like. 1) No matter whether it's Esther or another employee taking care of me, they always do a thorough and fast job. I'm seriously in and out of there in 10-15 minutes and am always happy with the results. 2) It's easy to book appointments via their website or Yelp and it's pretty easy to get a last minute appointment when you suddenly have a surprise date night ;) and 3) the punch card! I appreciate that loyal customers are rewarded with a free wax after 5 visits (the total number of visits necessary for the free service varies depending on the type of service). I'm on a mission to find the best cheap Brazilian wax in Chicago, so JJ was on my list of places to check out. Lets start with the Pros. -I actually had an appt at my usual spot but got out of class super early and they couldn't squeeze me in early, so based on previous reviews I figured JJ would be able to, and sure enough I called at 530 and had an appt for an hour later. -She was extremely fast and shockingly thorough. I always go home and examine how many spots were missed and she really did a great job. -Thorough clean up and plucking of stray hairs (my sister said she did ingrown extractions on her, too) -She is closer to my apartment than where I usually go for a wax Cons: -First she was late, but was very apologetic and it was fine because I was in no rush AND she had squeezed me in. (Although If I wouldn't have felt rushed I might have asked for her to do a shape which she offers at no extra charge, but I figured no heart could be expertly crafted in a 7 minute wax) -While I was there two other girls came in (she is a one woman operation) so I felt like she waxed me extra quickly which is probably why she burned/bruised me pretty badly in one spot. -She charges an extra $10 to do the back side, or the "B&B" as she calls it (whatever that means). I mean come on! Its like one extra wax strip and if I'm coming in for a wax I want it ALL gone. I actually think I will come back here, but probably in the middle of the day during the week rather than 630 on a Friday when she is slammed. I had an appointment for an underarm and upper lip wax (which means the area above the lip). A t the last minute I added a leg wax as well, but by the time she had finished my first two services, I had changed my mind. The work was not thorough or detailed, and my waxer was brash and careless as she slathered wax on me. Some dripped onto my actual lip, and when I pointed it out, thinking she would rub it off with baby oil or something, she just said "yes, I'll get it," laid down the cloth, and pulled it up. And yes, she got some skin with it. It was painful. I walked out still sporting visible hair on the area that had been waxed, with cut lips that I had to put neosporin on. I used to go here whenever I needed a quick, cheap eyebrow wax. The last time I went there was new girl working who did my eyebrows and I had a horrible experience. This last time, it hurt a little more than usual and was really warm but I thought maybe my skin was just being a little extra sensitive. After my service my skin was bright red (usually it's a little red) and the woman looked surprised at how red my skin was. I didn't think too much of it since my skin tends to get red after waxing but once I got home, I realized that she BURNED my skin. I had SCABS under my eyebrows for a couple of days. I put all sorts of medication on it to help it heal faster and lots of cover-up but looked like a complete disaster. I think part of the problem was the wax was too hot and she went over the same spots multiple times with wax! read more

I got my eyebrows threaded here twice now. I would say it takes longer to thread my eyebrows here than if I went to Devon but she's in the city so it's totally worth not driving out to Devon. The owner does all the work herself - she's very tedious which is great! There's only one woman working the store so you have to ring the bell to get let in. I've noticed that she tends to be more busy on Saturdays (she's closed on Sundays) but pretty open on weekday evenings (closes at 7pm but she will take 7pm apptmts if you call ahead). 1. Convenient street parking (I usually park on the other side of the street) 2. Easy to get an appointment and hours are long 3. Great customer service 4. CHEAP!! 5. Recommend going on weekdays. How freakin' unbelievable that I love getting my eyebrows waxed, despite the redness and small amount of pain...the eyebrow massage surpasses that any day- You have to try to understand what I'm talking about. If I can get a massage anytime of the day on any body part, I'm game! For 12 bucks, I sit in a chair, sorta like a dentist office chair, flop my head back and she goes to work.
