Great first experience at Sine Qua Non West Town. Best haircut ever by Lisa. She really asks and listens! I brought a picture and she nailed it. It rarely happens to me. The important thing for me with my wavy thin hair is, not necessarily how pretty it looks when it's blown dried and diffused but how it looks next day when it's brushed and re-wetted since my hair blow dry never lasts more than a day regardless where it's done. I'm sure the owner will be replying with a condescending message, but let me start by saying I am not one to complain of services. The appointment started with me changing my schedule and coming in later so the stylist, Stacias, could have another client come before me. I told her I was unhappy with how choppy my layers were, and that I wanted everything rounded out and connected. I told her my hair looked thinner because it was so layered and that I wanted it to look fuller. I was left with a haircut that looked disconnected and even choppier than when I went in. Before I left I tried asking the stylist to round out the bottom, but she told me not to worry about it and that it looked blunt because she blow dried it straight.. I left, went in the car to facetime my friend, and the first thing he said was wth did they do to your hair, so I know i'm not crazy. I went back in after about five minutes, but my stylist had already left. Someone else tried to help, but they had another client coming in in a few minutes. Ended up having to take off 2 more inches. Worst part is I just spent $600 getting my hair colored and now $120 for a cut I absolutely hate. I have messaged back and forth with the manager. I already tried going in to fix my hair same day, and I do not want to waste my time going in again and having it chopped up even more. Refused to give me a refund on a horrible $100 hair cut.. which I don't mind paying & thought paying a higher price would mean a nice haircut.. I would have better results at a cheaper place. I have been going to sine qua non For many years until now. I had an appointment which they reminded me about 2 days before the appointment, which was a Saturday, due to my current location I didn't get the message until the next day which was Sunday, they are closed Sunday and Monday so I called Tuesday morning the day of my appointment. They charged my cc without consent $121.00. I was just having my roots dyed. They added that I was getting a cut and highlights. I Never asked for highlights or a cut there ever. I disputed the charge with my bank. Be careful when you cancel with Clair. I don't have a problem with paying a cancellation fee, I agree with the policy. It was my fault. I offered 25 even 50 for canceling. But to charge me $121.00 without my consent for a root job is a bit much and illegal. My last root job wasn't the greatest but I didn't complain. I have always left there satisfied. I'm sure this business will be just fine without me. read more

I have been a client to Sine qua Non for over 20 years. There has been many times when I had issues with their short comings and inconsistencies and poor attitudes of stylists, but because I liked the "concept" in their hair design and was loyal to the owner, I continued to refer and even took my three children there from their first haircut. I grew with their business from the time they were at Lincoln Ave to all other locations. I would often trust any of their stylists, for haircut at any location and fit myself to their availability without being picky. This time though, I was faced with the dark truth about them which I had suspected, but never believed my intuition due to my patronage and loyalty. For a very important event next week, I booked a haircut and color and talked to hairdresser ahead of time and sent pictures and we all agreed. However, the stylist ruined my color and cut and even offered to re-do hair color if after wash I did not like it. She knew she did a bad job with color, but she told a different story to owner apparently.Just look at the pictures I will post and judge yourself what a mess was done. There was no arguments or poor interactions and tip was left for 25% regardless. When I approached to get color corrected , the owner, with her "assumptive and accusatory" email wrote back that she would block my future bookings AND for my THREE children as well, who are now teenagers and independent clients to this salon. Due to strict management of this salon, my guess is that the hair dressers end up fabricating a one sided story to owner to justify themselves and owner never calls to hear clients side. I am in fact more upset as to how she is blocking kids who had been their client for years and NEVER had any issue. Even with me the dissatisfaction I had belonged to 14 years ago with one of their hairdressers with many personal issues that was gradually reflected on her work, though she was also very talented and the salon was aware. However, the owner comes back retaliatory and blocks my whole family. Isn't that totally odd? I learned throughout years, that you can never criticize CONSTRUCTIVELY at this hair salon as they think they are PERFECT and you have to "take it or leave it". The way they run business is wrong and humiliating to clients and use intimidation as their form of never apologizing and over charging instead if you do not like their errors. Mistakes happen, but how this salon manages their mistake is wrong. It just hair, and our style and presentation but let me be the first one to tell you that after all these years, it's NOT worth the experience or your loyalty and patronage and patience. I will not recommend this place and be careful!! After your first dissatisfaction don't be patient like I had been, and let go and use other stylists in other salons . Just move on and enjoy a pleasant and happy salon who knows your respect and cares for how you feel about your hair and doesn't take the upper hand or defame you. I've had very good cuts here over the years. Most recently Theo gave me a fantastic cut (I would easily give this cut 5 stars). They also helped connect me to another stylist for my next cut as I hoped for a last minute cut before a trip and they weren't available. My next cut here was with Lucky (who was training at the time). The cut she gave me was quite a bit shorter than the picture I showed her. I realized it too late to say anything that could change it. The cut was hugely cute though so it wasn't the worst thing. Considering she was training, she's very possibly improved on getting lengths closer to reference photos. read more

Just avoid this salon if you want a root touch-up while having highlights; otherwise, beware of the result you could get (check the photo taken 12 hours after the appointment; I wish I made the same one for "before", as even growing natural hair looked nicer than this so-called professional touch-up). I've got a very disappointing result from one of the top stylists (Carrie) who either didn't pick the right color for the roots or kept the dye on before washing it off for too long + didn't do a good job with blending it in using a toner (according to my 2 go-to colorists who saw the photos of the outcome but whose schedule for the summer I couldn't match because of business trips - huge mistake). I addressed the issue very politely with the stylist but was told the only option I should have used was more highlights (I was never told the color would look patchy otherwise). On top of that, the owner told me " this was exactly the color/formula I wanted " (as if it's me picking up the right tube from the shelf and following the processing requirements during the appointment) and " the salon doesn't offer free highlights ". I have never asked for a free service, in the first place, but I did expect an acceptable result from a $150+ service booked 7 weeks in advance. Also, I would have considered other options if I was warned about the possible outcome timely. Finally, this was the first time in my life I heard that highlights should be redone more than once per 4-6 months to keep the hair color visually appealing (full highlights were done at the end of April, and the described visit to Sine happened in late August). All the other stylists managed to do root touch-ups without creating a sharp contrast between the roots and the ends / middle section of the hair - not to mention that if they were unsure of the result for any reason, they communicated concerns and potential solutions proactively before starting to do their work, not post-factum. Overall, the customer service standards are highly questionable, if not non-existing, not to mention the photo indicates the quality of work deemed fully acceptable / normal by the owner. In case the stylist makes a mistake or just doesn't deliver (and admits the result looks strange in person), it will be the client's problem, and even a simple apology would be too much to ask for. " We are fully booked to try to do anything else" effectively means " we have other clients, and cannot care less about you or your satisfaction with the service ". " Pay for more services if you want to get it right " is a great piece of advice to be given to a clearly dissatisfied client at a top-ranked salon - I'll definitely follow it elsewhere. read more

Major shout-out to Joe, my stylist, who is amazing in every way and is the best thing about this place. However, there are a lot of other things that make this salon special as well. The ambiance is casual chic, super clean and modern, with a diverse array of awesome music playing all the time. Everyone who works here, from the most senior stylists to the people who manage the front desk, are at the top of their game and are warm, professional, and fun. My service experience is always outstanding: my hair always looks amazing and so does everyone else's who walks out of here. Finally, this place runs like a machine in the most awesome way. TL,DR: This salon does not value your time. I've given this salon MANY chances. I've tried 2 different stylists and yet nothing has improved. I found this salon because I need my color corrected after a bad treatment somewhere else. I was finally able to make an appointment in June 2021. My color was 'corrected' but unfortunately within a week my dark black hair had white/yellow streaks running through it. I contacted the salon and they did offer me a complimentary toner correction about 2 weeks after I contacted them, not an ideal wait time but I took it and the color did look much better. So I made a follow up appointment for cut/root touch up. Here is where things start to go downhill. My follow up appointment was canceled and I was asked to reschedule. Of course, things happen so I agree and reschedule. Then again, I am contacted my appointment has been canceled and I was asked to reschedule since my stylist was unavailable. At that point I ask for another available stylist because I did not want to wait. They agreed, I got my hair cut and my roots touched up. Scheduled a follow up appointment - and guess what? I was told my new stylist tested positive (Jan 4 , 2022) for COVID that morning and needed to reschedule. No problem, we reschedule and I have an appointment scheduled today (Apr 12, 2022) guess what I get this morning? The exact same text message that I received on Jan 4 saying that my stylist has tested positive for COVID this morning and my appointment needed to be rescheduled. I am slightly suspicious of the fact that somehow this stylist tests positive the very morning of my appointments, but even if this amazing coincidence was true - the way the salon has handled all of these cancelations has been terrible. Not once in the 4 times that my appointment has been canceled have they ever offer a discount/complimentary service or product. Just a text message that says "sorry for the inconvenience. contact us to reschedule." It really makes me feel not valued as a customer. It seems like they believe that my schedule and my time doesn't matter. The services I've received have been adequate, but haven't been exceptional or something that you can't find elsewhere. I got a Lob and bangs just how I asked and was asked more than once about the bangs to make sure they weren't cut too short for my liking. I also had the best shampooing experience ever (it was pretty much like a head massage). The location I went to in Lakeview is also really nice and pretty quiet and relaxing. She is an incredible colorist who truly cares about the integrity of your hair. I go in once a year to go a bit blonder and my hair grows out beautifully in between visits. Overrated. The stylist (Lo) messaged me the day before my scheduled appointment to reschedule for another day. I gladly accepted. For my second appointment, she was unavailable to provide the full service (wash, cut, color, and blowdry). I was understanding and returned a third time. On my third visit, I was messaged in the early morning; they wanted to see if I was willing to come in earlier than my scheduled afternoon appointment. I politely declined and informed them that I had prior commitments. When I arrived, Lo received me 20 minutes after my scheduled time. I was foregiving. Once I was on the chair, we proceeded to talk about the service. That's when I discovered that the rude receptionist who had made my last experience an inconvenient one had scheduled my appointment incorrectly. Instead of making it a 3-hour appointment, she scheduled it for 1.5 hours. Rather than being flexible, forgiving, and understanding, Lo apologized and explained that she was only willing to provide a half-job. That was it. I was done. Instead of wasting my money and letting them waste my time ever again, I decided to forego doing business there ever again and left. Immediately after that, I decided to visit a comparable, if not better, high-end salon located in Downtown near the Magnificent Mile. I don't know why I didn't go there previously; I've been going there for the last 12 years, but wanted to experience the sine qua non hype. It's not real. If you decide that Sine Qua Non is not the place for you for color. George, the experienced colorist and master instructor, with Charles Ifergan Salon on Oak Street, provided me with a complimentary consultation on a last-minute basis given the Sine Non Qua debacle (I am a busy lady, and they wasted my time). When George assessed my current color, which Lo had done, he asked me if I had colored my own hair. What he found was that (Lo) had only psinted the top layer of my hair. However, underneath, my hair had been fully neglected. Don't believe the Sine Qua Non hype. They definitely are NOT the best salon in the city. George went on to provide an amazing pricing menu. It is an objective list that reasonably describes the different price-points and variations based off hair length. He also agreed that he could recreate the aesthetic I wanted: a light base with golden highlights over the half-job boliàge that Lo had previously created for which I was overcharged). In hindsight, I realize that Sine Qua Non is not the best salon in the city as they like to market themselves. Lo may be convincing given her smart online marketing tools (e.g., a persuasive bio on the salons website and an abundant amount of demos on Insta). The truth is that her skills are rather limited as a colorist. That said, beware if you're going there for color. You may pay a lot more for a job that is minimal and subpar. It is definitely not worth it. Don't get me wrong, she is nice but isn't the greatest. read more

I've heard of this salon and seen it on lists of best salons in Chicago for years and years, so I was excited to finally give it a go! I'd heard good things about multiple stylists, but I ended up seeing Lo, and I'm so glad I did! I made an appt online, which was easy enough to navigate. I'd recommend making an appt a few weeks out from when you really need to go because it looked like they were pretty booked for weeks! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the receptionist, who offered me something off their complimentary drink menu (free coffee, tea, wine, and beer!). I only had to wait for Lo for maybe two minutes before she greeted me very warmly. She welcoming me to the salon for the first time, and we went straight into what I was looking to get and how to achieve it. I have very long, very straight hair, and I was looking to freshen it up by with some layers and some length taken off. After a fantastic head massage and shampoo/conditioner that was geared toward my hair needs, Lo went into giving me exactly what I wanted while making sure each length cut off was okay with me. The blowdry was so relaxing that I actually fell asleep! Overall, she was very friendly and a good amount of chatty (not too much, not awkwardly quiet). My haircut ended up being $61, which I think it totally fair for a haircut in Chicago. I'll be back to see her again! read more

Just got a cut with Lauren and there are so many good things about my experience that I have to list them all. Firstly, booking online is super easy. They list all of the stylists, and along with their individual prices for each service and a short bio, they link you directly to their instagram as well. This really helped me settle on a stylist who fit in my budget and worked well with my hair texture. Secondly, the salon is very comfortable and welcoming, and I was greeted with a literal menu of drinks to choose from (coffee, teas, wine, water, etc). Who doesn't love a glass of wine while they're getting their hair cut? (It may have been 3pm...) Lastly, Lauren was exactly what anyone would look for in a stylist. She really took the time to listen to what I wanted (even though I probably explained it horribly), and asked me some questions to make sure my cut would be exactly what I was expecting. She was friendly without talking my ear off and didn't seem rushed at all. She also explained the products she was using and how to incorporate them into my routine. My cut turned out AMAZING. Oh so they canceled my cut appointment for me even though when I confronted them with why I don't have a color appointment I asked for weeks ago I never requested such a thing. I have been seeing Josie for years now and honestly, she is just the absolute best. I have the most flat and boring hair, and my side part has been with me since I was a kid, and instead of trying to change me and my boring hair, she makes me look stunning and refreshed every time I go in to see her. She knows I don't get colored very often, and she always blends my hair beautifully so that when my roots grow out it isn't super obvious. I seriously cannot say enough good things about her, she is just a total rockstar. Even though I moved to the suburbs I refuse to see anyone else, mostly because I love her cuts and also chatting with her. Thankful for salon apprentice (Google it) for providing a system to connect hair models (AKA people who are looking to exchange their time for a free haircut) and hair stylists/cutters. I was due for a haircut (I know this because I'd spend too much time at work looking for split ends that weren't hard to find cause there was plenty with a pair of scissors in my hand...) so after hearing about salon apprentice, I wanted to try it! I found a post, texted the number with a current picture of my hair, and had an appointment for a couple days later! The only downside was the time it would take. Since the person cutting your hair needs to run through their technique by the educator, it did take about 1 hour and 45 minutes for my haircut (like I said in a previous review, I've got more time than sense). But for the price of FREE, I'll take it! The salon itself was very nice. They offered beverages, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, which is a really nice gesture. I'm pretty frugal so I would never spend the amount of a haircut here (probably ranging from $50-$80 for women) so it was nice to be able to experience the salon without having to pay for the cut. Love this salon, but let's be honest, we become repeat clients because of our stylists & Sonia is the BEST! I'm a red head & have been enhancing my natural color for 25 years. I've been everywhere in the city, EVERYWHERE, and have never had this level of expertise! Sonia approached my color like a scientist. I could see the wheels in her mind turning as she mixed & poured her color. She did an all over beautiful & NATURAL shade of red (which is extremely difficult to achieve) and then did a balayage over that & for the first time in my life it was PERFECT. Not only is Sonia a coloring genius, she's also such a sincere & wonderful person.
