First positive is this is a family owned property with the nicest, most hospitable hosts. Staff who helped us and are exceptionally kind, Holly and Ben. The official greeter is Toby, the owner's chocolate lab love muffin. We stayed in room 11, 2 double beds, with a mini-fridge, flat screen tv, and a completely updated bathroom. Tiled shower with glass door, new fixtures, floor--all exceptionally clean and with great towels. Comfortable beds, fluffy pillows, and nice linens made for a comfortable night's sleep. The plantation shutters allowed us to let in natural light, while maintaining privacy. Centrally located, this property is close to a well stocked liquor store, an artisan cheese shop, a natural grocery market, and restaurants. Not too far away is the entrance to hiking trails. We parked for free at the motel and walked everywhere. While a classic motel by design, the property feels more like an inn. There are bird feeders bustling with life, a lovely garden out back, tulips and lilies growing in flower beds, and a reception area with a fireplace, and plenty of comfy seating in a rustic wood paneled gathering room. The walls are a bit thin and our floors slanted a tad, but this wouldn't deter us from returning. We loved the unique character of the property, and most of all, how friendly and welcoming our hosts were in helping us sort out our day. There is a healthy continental breakfast in the morning with hot coffee and tea. It's a great inn for families. Next time, we'll stay at least three days, using the Bluebird as our base to see the rest of the area. read more

Let me start by saying I've stayed at the Bluebird at least four or five times in the last several years. It is a good option for those who can use earplugs and don't need any frills/extra comfort items. For years, this was our choice because it was a great location for the price! I'll list some details about our room: We stayed in room 9. Until last week, I had only stayed in the west "wing" that is a single level. There were bathroom renovations happening and so those rooms were unavailable this time. While it was nice that there was a microwave it was kind of a bummer to find the previous guests' leftovers waiting for them. Besides that issue the room was clean enough. Our room had a matching bed and multiple dressers, but no art/decor or a mirror. There was a two top table with mismatched/stained chairs. The walls are THIN. The gentleman below us, who I fear is dealing with undiagnosed sleep apnea, shook the floor of our room throughout the night. The coffee machine in the room is no good. Just walk down to the french bakery and get coffee when it opens at 6:30, you'll probably be up anyway. If you're already spending this much, you may as well consult your budget and see if you can spend another 10% to be closer to the coast. I'm not sure I'll stay at the Bluebird again, unless I can guarantee a single story stay for a steal. If you're just passing thru, this may be for you!! read more

My wife and I reserved one room with a King size bed. Room number 7 downstairs. When we first walked in we noticed a bug on the wall and a lumpy bed. During the evening we heard every word the couple in the upper room was. We also heard the conversations in the room beside us. We had a two night conmittment and we asked to leave the next day. They only gave us half or money back from the 2nd night that we didn't even stay, even though they rented the room out! Yes we went back to see if they would rent it out. I was in room 29. The bed was uncomfortable and there is a brick wall in the room. There wasn't a DVD player although one was listed when I chose to stay at this hotel. The walls were thin. I don't understand why there was not any art on the brick wall or a lovely color of paint over the brick wall. One does not travel to the coast to look at a brick wall in one's hotel room. Pros were the small fridge in the room, the shower was decent, and the woman at the front counter was nice when I checked in. The hotel is centrally located. The garden was nice yet the housekeeping staff were loud thus I did not enjoy a quiet garden. I would not stay at this hotel again. read more

Let me just start this by echoing other reviewers' sentiments... The Bluebird Inn was a letdown. We made our booking mid-week, and we were happy to score a room under $200 on a weekend during the summer. The gal my husband spoke with over the phone was very nice and professional, and we were excited for our stay. Fast forward to 4pm check-in... Our hearts fell when we walked into Room 4. Gone was the clean, quaint and modestly appointed decor from their website, and in its place were peeling paint, questionable carpet, and pathetic bedding. We were also greeted by a very strong smell stemming from the microwave, and it took hours for us to air the room out. The walls were incredibly thin, and, unfortunately, some guests didn't respect generally understood quiet hours. Also, for the rooms being non-smoking, there was an awful lot of smoking going on right outside the rooms, which kind of makes it difficult for those in neighboring rooms to crack a window. On the plus side, all of the employees were pleasant, the remodeled bathroom was nice, and the outdoor seating with the fire was an unexpected source of enjoyment and relaxation. All in all, the Bluebird has seen better days. And it's such a sad thing to say because on the outside, the Bluebird looks like it could be something really special. We sincerely hope that the management starts paying attention to guest reviews and takes steps to make some necessary improvements. read more

My wife and I signed in without checking the room first, always a mistake. A prison cell might be more inviting. The bed is hard; three hard little pillows were provided; the bathroom was ascetic to put it mildly; insufficient seating and lighting for reading (the fluorescebt bulb in the one lamp was burned out); and to top it all off, there was a nauseating stench of cheap cleanser or room deodorizer. The cleanliness of the room, the reasomably close setting of the place, and the well-maintained grounds weren't enough to compensate so we decided against staying. We had touched nothing so the lady at the desk promised to return us half the room charge. We are still waiting. There are so many better places in this beautiful little town. Update: 2-7-2022 The motel refunded half our room fee as they promised. read more

This is a simple older hotel within walking distance of several great restaurants. Room 32, on the second floor, was comfortable enough for a night. Newly painted with a nicely renovated bathroom but the carpet and bed spread had seen better days. A refrigerator in the room makes it convenient to refreeze ice blocks for cooler toting travelers. The walls are paper thin so I could hear the neighbors who were talking softly and thankfully didn't have a TV on. The staff is very friendly and accommodating when I was making my reservation. And once you're there they will make you feel at home. They offer a light assortment of typical breakfast items. The lobby is a cozy and homey environment with fireplace and plenty of seating. There are several buildings set up in a U-shape with the lobby building in the center. Plenty of parking so you don't have to drag bags long distances. It's one of the more budget friendly hotels in Cambria. read more

I think we just found our new favorite place to stay when coming to the coast!! Very cute hotel with a beautifully kept garden at the back. Although the hotel was full it was very quiet. The room was clean and seemed recently renovated ? Great walk in shower. The only thing missing was a table and chair but there was not really room for it. I loved having the ceiling fan. The staff was very pleasant. Great location on the Main Street. Overall a wonderful stay. Know that they only have coffee for breakfast no food. But they are plenty of options around. The reason why the Bluebird Inn is suitable for me is that lodging is available adjacent to a garden, not visible from the street. Reserving well in advance is my way to deal with the Bluebird Inn. If I can't reserve one of the garden rooms, I don't bother with a stay. I find an alternative in another town. The garden with the creek below is what I seek. Gaining access to the garden through a sliding glass door with outdoor seating right there. The proximity to a certain kind of nature---the croaking of frogs, the songs of quail and woodpecker punctuating the atmosphere. A view out to the trees. A certain kind of relaxation is found. Otherwise, the amenities at The Bluebird are spare. Piles of pillows are not the interior decor. At least, wireless is available now. Newpapers, including The New York Times, and magazines are available to read in the lobby. Don't expect a big breakfast here---slices of pound cake or such, coffee, tea, hot chocolate mix are the modus operandi. The room I usually reserve has a bathtub, but I don't know whether all the rooms are so equipped. I am comfortable here in the East Village with being able to walk to what I need once I have checked in. Restaurants are a short walk away...no problem with finding good food. Throughout October is the Scarecrow Festival with scarecrows scattered throughout Cambria. Fun. The pace of life can slow here, once prepared for the Bluebird Inn. read more

Clean hotel with charming atmosphere are reasonable prices, given that this is an expensive touristy area. Good parts: - My room was very clean and the furniture in great shape - Charming layout with the hotel rooms in a U around a house attached to the lobby - Well cared for garden with seating in the back area - Helpful and nice front desk staff - Binder of local menus made choosing a restaurant easier - Easy walking distance to East Village, not too far to walk to West Village - Hot water was really hot! Bad parts: - Walls were thin enough to hear neighbors conversations as rumbles and really loud snoring - Low flow showerhead had fine pressure, but didn't put out enough water to rinse shampoo out of my hair without extended effort (I have really thick hair.) I feel like the price ($75 after tax for a queen bed, one person, weekday during off season) was reasonable for the accommodations given the location. I also appreciate that for all the internet searching I did, the Bluebird Inn seems to be very honest in their rates. Very disappointed!! Didn't really want to give it a 1 star. Pet friendly room I believe #36 had a very nasty smell as soon as you open the door and the bedspread was old & dirty, nasty looking. Room was very small and hot. Nothing special about this room. They charged $247.00 for a room that should have been no more than $140 With tax. The Fan made a loud noise all night long. :( My Mom and I've been visiting this place for over 30 years, we would go at least Once or twice a year. Great memories! I haven't been back for over 5 years just went with my sister 2 days ago. In the past, I stayed in the garden rooms not a pet friendly room as I did this time, different location in the hotel. The Pet friendly room we stayed in, we couldn't believe it was part of this hotel EEK!!. Very disappointed!! New owners, they purchased it about 4 years ago. I will no longer recommend this place to my friends. When I checked out today the lady at the front desk not the owner patronized me when I nicely complained. She then started to complain about what's going on with the virus which I don't understand what that has anything to do with my concerns about this room. I never asked for a refund I just thought they needed to know about this room. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU LIKE COFFEE IN THE MORNING LIKE I DO YOU MAY WANT TO BRING A COFFEE MAKER WITH YOU. Beautiful and affordable. Found this neat little place by chance and couldn't believe our luck! It's located right off Main St with lots of shops and restaurants nearby but still very quiet and peaceful. We stayed in a 2 Queen suite and paid less than a standard room at Cambria Pines Lodge. The gardens were lovely and the view was divine. Couldn't have stayed in a nicer place! Staff was helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. read more

I'm giving this Inn 4 stars instead of 5 because I was only really disappointed with the lack of hot water for showering, and some squeaky flooring upstairs. Overall This hotel is very quaint and clean, staff is friendly and helpful, with a really good location, and our King bed room (room #8) was very spacious, a large walk-in shower, and had a microwave with small fridge. The bed was pretty comfy. Like I mentioned earlier, the hot water was lacking, they have the handles locked Or something at a certain point so you can't make it hot, just warm. After camping overnight the previous night, I was really looking forward to a hot shower, so it was very disappointing that the water was warm at best. I would recommend this Inn with just the warning not to expect a hot shower. read more

This is a lovely motel with flower boxes on the banisters and a fire pit out front for cozy evenings visiting with fellow travelers. The beds are very comfortable! My room was spotless. Friendly...Clean...Hospitable. We used to stay on Moonstone Drive, which we LOVE. But we stayed in-town at The Bluebird about two years ago and haven't been back to Moonstone. Since then, we have stayed here FOUR times (still here at the time of this review). They provide a nice little breakfast to get you going (the coffee could be a bit stronger, but it's still good). The fire pit out front is wonderful. In fact, we were out there last night and they offered to leave it on as long as we liked, although they typically turn it off at 10 PM. The location is fantastic for just leaving the room and walking into town. We won't go anywhere else! read more

Cozy. Convenient. Nostalgic. Call me corny, but these are the words I would use to describe the hotel. As soon as you walk into the lobby, you get an impression of being in thrown back in to the early days of road trip travel of the 50's. There is big band music playing in the lobby, bavarian style windows and interior decor. The standard rooms (non-creek side) are small and simple. If you are looking for something fancy, stay at a Ritz. If you want something quaint, then Bluebird is your place. The only caveat is that the walls are a bit thin but not to a point where it's unbearable to sleep. As I write this, it's 50 degrees outside and fall weather, I'm sitting in the lobby with the fireplace going, the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald singing her tunes coming through the speakers in the lobby, checking email on their free wi-fi, and sipping coffee. Cozy. Nostalgic. P.S. To Dawn's review below...I totally agree with her that it would be annoying to have a wedding party keeping you up when you want to sleep. However, this could've happened at any hotel and therefore I wouldn't take it out on the Bluebird Inn. If I were her, I'd Yelp about the annoying wedding party instead. read more

A business has to truly earn a negative review for me to write one. When you pay for a hotel to sleep in, in reasonably expected peace and comfort, and instead you cannot sleep at all, the principal contract has been violated, and it would seem only reasonable, and good customer service, to refund the customer's money with apologies. If I buy a car, and it doesn't run, I expect a 100% refund, not a token gesture of a small partial refund. That is not how it works at the Bluebird Inn however. After our unpleasant experience, I contacted Fal, the Manager at the Bluebird Inn, and offered them the opportunity to rectify our situation by crediting the evening we spent in room #8 for our wedding anniversary, getting zero sleep, due to a screaming child tantruming all night directly next door. She was polite, but unwilling to offer anything more than a 30% discount for that night, (or towards a future stay, which there will obviously not be) so, here's the resulting and absolutely accurate review. After we checked in, within an hour or so, a child in the next room had a full-on meltdown, shrieking non-stop at the top of their lungs, so my wife and I went down to the front desk to let them know of our concern. The staff assured us they would make rounds in the evening, and speak to the guest adjacent to us to make sure this didn't go on all night. We asked about the possibility of moving, and they did offer us another upgraded room, but only for a single night, we would then have to pack up again and return to the same room for the second night of our stay. Clearly that was not a realistic solution. Hence, every two hours or so, all night long, either screaming and crying, or banging loudly, followed by door slamming. As a result, we spent our next day thoroughly exhausted. Offering a 30% credit or refund for that experience is poor customer service, to say the least. Fal then debated the facts of my reporting of our experience, claiming there was in fact no child next door to us that night, deflecting and excusing, essentially calling me a liar. Also, poor customer service in the extreme. My wife and I watched an adult carrying the shrieking toddler from the room. For the record, our "Standard King" room was LESS than what one might expect from a base room at a Motel 6. Bare, thin white artless walls, bedraggled and worn blankets with the room # written on them in the corner with a red sharpie, no robes, no phone, not even a basic coffee maker, a shower that dribbled on you, and a main light switch which inexplicable illuminated a fixture tucked into the far rear corner of the room. This hotel appears charming on the outside, but beware, the only reason it is still doing booming business is its ideal location, on Main Street, right in the middle of town. We spent the previous evening to our stay at the Blubird, in a tent across the way on private property which rented out small campsites. An infinitely more enjoyable experience. There will be an apology in response here from the Inn, and more deflection, blame shifting and justification. If you want a pleasant stay in beautiful Cambria however, look elsewhere, there are myriad options where your experience is their priority. read more

Miserable stay at the Bluebird Inn. One step above motel 6. Refrigerator was off in the room when we arrived, room was hot inside from apparently the pilot light on the heater per the lady at the front counter. We left the room for over two hours with the windows open and ceiling fan on, while the sun was down! However, the room was still hot when we returned. The counter lady blamed it on unusually hot day, I call BS. Disappointed with the response from the counter girl, just be honest and say you don't care! No help, she said it will cool off. Exterior temperature is very cool, however the room is not! We have always had good luck at Cambria Pines Lodge, but we were with a group who suggested staying here. Stayed here before, but will not again. read more

What a GREAT property! This hotel is owner operated and the love they put in this property comes across immediately! This hotel is immaculate! I am handicapped and the room we were given had a roll in shower, a king sized bed and everything was perfect. When I go back to Cambria this will be my go to place. They have a fire pit to hang out if your so inclined. Ben took my reservation and took the time to get my needs and picked the perfect room. I can't say enough about how well we treated! We rented two rooms in the Bluebird and for a family holiday. When we checked in the receptionist was very friendly. The hotel was clean and the rooms were well equipped and within easy walking distance of the shops and restaurants. All in all a very comfortable and nice stay. I'd like to state up front that my entire stay at the hotel was quite pleasant. Easily 4 stars. However, billing issues and post-stay customer service leave me with a bad taste. I usually don't bring these issues to Yelp, but I could not get resolution through the hotel. Pros: Nice rooms, nice neighborhood, nice fire pit, nice staff (the lady at the front desk I spoke to twice). Cons: We got a written quote for 2 nights plus 2 pets. When we showed up, the nightly rate had increased and the pet rate had doubled. When I noticed that I was overbilled by $67.34 (after we left), I called to ask. I spoke to someone who's name I forgot (not the nice lady I met before). She disputed that they had quoted us the rates I mentioned (I still have the pdf). She also indicated that their pet rate was per pet per night, so they had to double it for 2 pets. When originally quoted, we told them 2 pets, 2 nights, and they confirmed the rate they were quoting. I was going to wave the $67.34 discrepancy, and assume I had misread or misunderstood their quote. However, I also got a subsequent charge of $150, which is the main purpose I called them. They did not contact me to let me know they would be charging me, nor did they send me a receipt. She explained it was an incidental for additional cleaning, as there was a lot of pet hair. I did not dispute this detail (though you can shampoo carpets for less than $150). I asked why we paid a double pet deposit and an additional unreported incidental. She told me the pet fee was not a deposit, but a flat rate just for the pets to stay there, and did not include cleaning. When I asked why they did not advise me of the charge, she told me they never report incidentals, because too many people object. Of course I would object to this! In the end, I paid $239.84 to bring my pets to this hotel! Had they shared this information up front, I might have put them in a kennel. I told her I would not dispute the $67.34 overcharge if they would reverse the $150 incidental. She refused. Now I have to dispute them both through the bank. Fortunately, I have documentation to show that I was clearly overcharged. read more

Reservation dates were wrong: I never received a confirmation email with my reservation, so I called to confirm and found out they had the wrong dates and my email address was misspelled. By then the suite I had requested was no longer available even though I was still able to get a room. Room 24: OVERPRICED for a lumpy, uncomfortable king size mattress. Sheets were not changed in my 3 night stay. Room has a musty smell with a carpet that needs attention. The refrigerator had a horrible smell, and it was so noisy I had to turn it off at night. For the price, I will be looking for another place next time. read more

Booked last minute with my two year old and we have had a very nice stay. The gentleman at the front desk was super helpful and went out of his way to accommodate us. After driving hours alone with a toddler that kind of gesture makes it all better. The walls and floors are thin. So be prepared for a little bit of noise. I'm used to noise(toddler) so it doesn't bother me Great restaurants in walking distance and the most convenient parking ever. Haven't had breakfast yet but I've heard there will be pastries.
