As a BBQ reviewer I honestly didn't come here to review. I have passed it several times and figured after a great Sunday service and my daughter requesting bbq, I said let's give it a try as we're use to driving an hour a way from our home and this place is only about 25 mins from our home and 20 minutes from our church. I normally take pictures but once everything came, it didn't look to appetizing. The environment was classic hole in the wall country. It really gave small country concert vibes. The brisket had no bark. You can't be a Texas bbq joint and do brisket bad. The ribs tasted boiled. No smoke ring. No smoke flavor. Regular pepper sausages had no character. Just mush in a casing. Sides were not worth trying. Best thing we had today in my opinion were the French fries and fried okra. All in all, not a place I would suggest for true bbq enthusiasts. read more

The highs: the brisket is flawless, the beans are amazing, the jalapeño sausage is mouth watering, and the mac n cheese is delish. The lows: the pulled pork had very little flavor, neither of the sauces are great on their own (but pretty good mixed together), and the fries have an odd flavored seasoning dust we didn't love. The mehs: the potato salad is only okay. Happy to note they did serve unsweet tea, which we know is a Texas sacrilege, but it's our preference so it's nice to have that option. Overall, it was good. We came here on 1/14/26 to satisfy a BBQ craving. Overall, the experience was just okay. We tried the "torpedoes" -- four pieces wrapped with bacon, cream cheese, and smoked brisket. At $10, they were definitely not worth the price. Ours had no cream cheese at all, and for the size and what you get, it was pretty disappointing. My plate was decent. The peppered sausage was good, but the potato salad had an unusual flavor. The smoked mac and cheese was okay, but the only real smoke flavor came from the chopped brisket mixed into it. My wife had the chopped brisket sandwich with fries, and that was actually pretty good. They offer two types of BBQ sauce, but neither impressed us -- one was very vinegar-forward, and the other had a sweet, almost cranberry-like taste. On the positive side, the restaurant itself is nice and spacious, making it great for large groups. I ordered the 3 meat plate with brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage, and pulled pork with Mac and cheese and onion rings. The brisket was nice and tender with good bark and smoke flavor, the jalapeño cheddar sausage was very good with a nice kick from the jalapeño, and the pulled pork was just okay and needed a little more seasoning for me. The onion rings were nice and crunch and the Mac and cheese had good flavor. Overall it was good BBQ with good service and typical BBQ vibes with the nice smoky smell when you walk in. Stopped at Bluebonnet BBQ on our way to Dallas after seeing it on TikTok--so glad we did! We got the 1-2-3 platter with brisket, turkey, and jalapeño cheese sausage. The brisket was incredibly tender, a distinguished smoke ring (and hands down probably the best we've had anywhere), the turkey was moist and flavorful, and the sausage had the perfect kick. Solid four-star experience. I came in for lunch on a not-busy early Thursday afternoon, and I would've given this place five stars except that it took more than 10 minutes for the server to approach, and the fact that they have Wi-Fi but it doesn't work because the place has a metal roof, which kept me from having an actual working lunch. I couldn't even use my mobile hotspot. Besides that, though, my server was really friendly and efficient, and the food was very good. I got the stuffed baked potato (the Ella) w/ brisket; it was a little too finely chopped for me, but it was still really tasty. The potato was huge and came fully loaded. They sure weren't shy with the amount of brisket that was on this potato. I also got the stuffed sweet potato with smoked turkey to go, per my server's recommendation. The smoked turkey was really good when I had it for dinner later, but I kinda wish I'd gotten the brisket with that, too. Next time I come, I'll definitely try more of the meats, but that baked potato was calling my name today. read more

Started off a little weird, not busy inside, but we waited at least 5 minutes for the person at the front was helping someone on the phone and then a guy placing an order to go. We just wanted to be seated, no one else was there to help her. Once seated the server was great, just that initial delayed the process. We were heading to the airport and the one with us was also headed somewhere afterwards. 3 of us ordered sweet tea, my first taste, like crazy amounts of sugar. I had to dilute by adding 1/3 of the glass into a full glass of water and seems still too sweet. Like more than chicken express. The ribs were like spot on! Crazy tender great flavor, bite right off the bone. Brisket excellent smoke, nicely tender, not enough flavor for my taste, but nice bark, nicely moist. I'm not a fan of either of their BBQ sauces, too tangy for both styles. Pulled Pork was my wife's favorite nicely moist tender and good flavor. Excellent Jalapeno Sausage, tender with great flavor and heat with big pieces of cheese and sliced perfect size. Related to the sides, green beans were good, not too seasoned as they were for our 11 month old grandson. Fried okra had great flavor and fried perfectly. Really good corn or the cob. And also approved by our grandson. Onion rings were a little tough, very crunchy but that the way they do them. My son-in-law said his CFS was good, not the best he's had but good. I'd say Kim's most BBQ places. You can't please everyone and certainly they have so many things on the menu it's hard to do great at all of them. I was almost as excited to try the dessert as the BBQ, as I friend told me about this place and I had looked it up online ahead of time. The front board doesn't have all of the items. They do have several other things on the menu. Like Salads, and 3-4 more kinds of desserts. The food was everything I expected, and above. The burnt ends were so tender and flavorful. The torpedos were very tasty with the right amount of cream cheese and smoked meat inside of the bacon wrapped jalapeño. The chicken fried steak was meaty with the right amount of crust. The gravy had a nice flavor. The pops beans had chunks of brisket and they were packed with flavor. The onion rings were so crispy and the batter was seasoned well. This was such a charmingly rustic venue. I did have to go hunt down the hostess before we could be seated, as signs told us to wait but there was no one to be seen and I had been standing there awkwardly in the mostly empty restaurant for the better part of ten minutes. She seemed annoyed I had sought her out but was polite enough. Our waitress was much more friendly. The smoked queso was delicious, I got the two meat plate and was happy with everything on the plate. The brisket was sliced incorrectly, but it was still tender. The turkey was very good. Had an evening meeting in Waxahachie so I looked for food ahead of time. What a nice surprise! I had never heard of this place. The servers were all extremely friendly and the food came out pretty quickly. The brisket and the mac and cheese were fantastic, but the star of the show was the black pepper sausage. This was the first time my brothers and have eaten at the Bluebonnet Barbecue. We were greeted by Mr. James, and Ms. Zoie, who were very friendly, polite, and made us feel very welcomed and happy to see us here. Ms. Janyia, was our server who was happy to serve us she was friendly, polite, very acknowledgeable of the menu and also offer recommendations. My younger brother had the Ella, a stuffed baked potato with a choice of meat, cheese, butter, sour cream, and chives, $14.00. My older brother had the Sweet Caroline, a stuffed sweet potato with choice of meat, cheese, butter, sour cream and chives served on the side, $13.00 and I had the daily special chopped beef sandwich, onions, pickles and jalapenos on the side and side $12.00 and choice of one side I ordered fried okra and onion rings $5.00 each. We also opted for dessert and we had (2) turtle cheesecakes $7.00 each. The food was very tasty and very filling. Albeit, both the onion rings and fried okra was a tad bit salty but fresh as they were hot and crunchy. I really liked everything about Bluebonnet from staff to food. We were in town visiting some friends in Ennis and since we were in Texas we had to try some Tx bbq. I searched for a highly rated bbq spot nearby and found Blue bonnet bbq! I'll start off by saying I did have an issue with receiving the wrong order but it was quickly remedied by the manager, I forgot her name but she was amazing in making me feel whole again and handled the situation in such a professional manner that you rarely see nowadays with most businesses. The food!! It was the best brisket we have ever had, so tender, flavorable and delicious. We think of it often. And the jalapeno sausage was the best we've ever had absolutely delectable. And the st louise ribs were delicious and fall off the bone tender seasoned to perfection. We ordered the mac and cheese and corn on the cob which tasted stupendous. Our order came with bread, pickles, jalapenos onions and two different bbq sauces the mustard base bbq sauce was our favorite. This place is absolutely worthy of another visit the next time we're in TX. read more

Tried this BBQ restaurant on Friday, 1121/25. I had the chopped BBQ sandwich, BBQ beans and onion rings. The chopped BBQ beef was chopped in large pieces, not finely chopped and beef was rather dry. They had 2 types of bbq sauce and I didn't like either one. The bbq beans was the best thing that I ordered. The onions rings were spiced with something and, whatever it was, I didn't like it. I also ordered banana pudding for dessert. I cannot recommend it either. Service was also quite slow. I have to say that our waitress was excellent. I would not return to this restaurant. Most any bbq restaurant that I've ever been to is better than this one, except maybe Mija BBQ in Cedar Hill. read more

We had a sampling of quite a few of their menu items and it was quite the experience! The food was incredibly tasty and the staff was incredibly friendly. We had a chance to chat with Kelly, who runs this wonderful restaurant, and she was as down to earth and friendly as you would hope! Texas does not fall short when it comes to great barbecue restaurants, but this place is exceptionally well thought out and put together. The decor was basic, yet inviting, and the seating area was not crowded or put together with the idea of fitting as many people in a small space as possible. if you are in the area, between Waxahachie and Ennis, near the racetrack, you would be doing yourself a huge favor by stopping in. Stopped by on a whim on the way home from the Bluebonnet Festival in Ennis. The server was sweet. The food was damn good! Chicken was small but so tender! Wish it was larger so I could have more. The ribs were also very good and not fatty. Unlike some BBQ places, you actually get meaty ribs here. The coleslaw was good. Could be a bit more tart but definitely was satisfying on it's own merit. If we're coming through, we'll definitely stop by again and if you're driving by, I recommend you do the same. read more

Newly renovated and it is very spacious and clean with great country decor. The food was pretty good. Brisket wasn't as good as we would have liked. It was thick and not falling apart like we have had at other places. They have really yummy smoked mac & cheese and "torpedos" which are jalepeno's stuffed with either chicken or brisket and wrapped in bacon and it comes with a spicy ranch dipping sauce. Customer Service was great. Bathrooms are clean and remodeled as well from the previous owners. There is a place you can rent out behind the restaurant for events with a pond as well. But the last two times I have been there I was charged a different price than what was on the menu (apparently their online system has the right prices and their menus are old per the waitress). The BBQ has not been as good as before and don't get me started on the miserable excuse for the "key lime pie" we ordered for dessert. I've driven across Texas more times than I can count, but I've never stopped in Waxahachie until recently. Honestly, the town was a little bit out of the way on our drive, but we made a special trip because of this song on Miranda Lambert's most recent album that both of my children love. I knew I wanted brisket, so my youngest daughter and I wound up having dinner at BlueBonnet one night. The space itself is lovely. Big, open restaurant with lots of seating. It was a weeknight and relatively early so there was no wait. My daughter (age 6) got a hot dog with mac and cheese and absolutely loved it. I got a plate of brisket with fried okra and green beans. The brisket was cooked really well -- tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture that you expect from Texas brisket. Compared to other places though, the meat was woefully under seasoned, so much so that I had to use BBQ sauce, which I really don't like doing with really good Texas-style brisket. It may have been cooked that way intentionally to give the diner more control over the level of salt (the server offered salt and pepper when she brought the plate, which was a little weird since it's usually just on the table), but still. I was bummed by the blandness, which was true for both the brisket and the green beans. The fried okra was delicious, seasoned well, and semi-addictive. The staff was super kind, and the service was quick, which are always appreciated. Would I come back here? Definitely, if I found myself in the area again. I would just be sure to take the waitress up on her offer for salt and pepper. read more
