Stopped into The District in Midlothian after a long afternoon of house shopping with my husband and sister because nothing fuels real estate decisions like hunger, dreams and hope. The place was fully booked, but the hostess saved the day and offered us lounge seating on the sofas. Honestly, it felt a little VIP...like we'd accidentally wandered into the cool kids' corner. I halfway considered putting on my sunglasses indoors just to commit to the moment, maybe even asking if they offered bottle service in the lounge. Within 10 minutes we were settled in and already getting excellent service. And as if the vibe wasn't good enough, there was a one‑man show crooning jazzy tunes in the background. He was smooth, talented, and added just the right soundtrack for an early dinner. Think "speakeasy energy," but suburban‑friendly. Now, the food. My husband ordered the Crunchy Pig sandwich, my sister went for the half rack of ribs, and I claimed the smoked turkey BLT. Everything hit the table about 20 minutes later, hot, fresh, and so lip‑smacking tasty that we inhaled every bite before remembering we meant to take pictures. My apologies to the food‑photo purists; trust me, the plates were camera‑ready before we destroyed them. Will never come here again. Didn't even get to try the food because we made a reservation and they gave our table to someone else and made zero accommodations for us. Why would someone make a reservation to sit there and wait? Other parties that came after us were seated immediately. No manager talked to us. Today, was my first time eating at Penn to Paper in Midlothian. Upon entry to the restaurant, a warm and cozy atmosphere! Very Classy Decor! Food Superior! Cocktails Spectacular! The vibe is upscale but the prices don't say that. The portions are perfect. The menu looks great, not too many random options. It seems like what they do, they do well. This restaurant got us through two weeks of moving to Midlothian. The food and service are a solid four stars. Here's the thing about the fifth star being withheld. The salmon was cooked fairly well most times but the crispy skin and still glistening just didn't happen on the same piece of fish at the same time. The veggies served with and clearly stated that they were included were not a large enough portion to be listed vaguely included. The first time that I complained the waitperson came back and said the cook said they were a garnish not a side. Oh ok my mistake. So I paid for a side which came cold then on another occasion the size of the garnishes (well not quite that bad ) but since I was paying for the sides which were priced like Nick and Sam's and mediocre--"Unlike Nick and Sam's. So four stars, note to the chef: believe it or not customers will pay more for reasonable quantities rather than reasonable prices then outrageous charges for the sides. It just kinda sucks. As if the patrons can't see the basic premise. That all said it was good for what we needed but we won't be back anytime soon. When I leave a restaurant I don't expect to still be hungry after eating my dinner. read more

We had a large party of 18 for Sunday 3/29. We had a reservation & were sat pretty quickly on the patio. The ambiance is very good. I got the hen blt from the featured menu, the chicken was fine, but there was way too much honey mustard sauce on the sandwich, and the bread was not the right match for the sandwich. The snapper tacos were very meh, not a lot of flavor & they were tiny, The chips & queso were good. I do think it's odd that sides were additional cost for a sandwich. read more

We opted to sit at the bar, and while the bartender was kind and definitely knew their way around a cocktail shaker, they seemed overwhelmed. Oddly enough, there were plenty of staff around, yet service still lagged. Drinks came out solid, but the food experience fell short, especially considering the wait. Drinks Blackberry Mule - 5/5. Refreshing, not overly gingery. Honestly one of the highlights. House Margarita - 3/5. Meh. Drinkable, but tasted more like pre-made marg mix than a crafted cocktail. Peach Me Up - 4/5. Seasonal specialty and very good (and strong!). Docking a star because there was something spicy in mine that shouldn't have been, and it made me have a reaction. Food Cuban Sandwich - 3.5/5. Flavor was on point, but after the long wait, it arrived at room temp. Not exactly the payoff I was hoping for. Fries were solid though, lightly seasoned with a sweet/savory balance. Mac & Cheese - 2/5. Creamy texture, noodles cooked well, but absolutely no flavor. Needed serious help in the seasoning department. Chicken Fried Brisket - 3/5. Cool concept, but again, room temp and bland. Mashed potatoes looked (and tasted) like something from a hospital tray - slopped on with zero seasoning. Not appetizing. Tempura Brussels Sprouts - 5/5. Surprisingly excellent! Crispy, flavorful, and the standout from the food menu. All in all, Penn to Paper is aight. The drinks are worth coming back for (especially the mule and whatever's on the seasonal menu), but I'd hope next time the food arrives hot and with some seasoning. Really nice new upscale restaurant in downtown Midlothian! This is the perfect place for date night. Decor is cute, they use real crystal for the water glasses and pretty clean inside. Servers flip tables quickly which was great. The burgers were FANTASTIC, buns were delicious, sweet potatoes fries (10/10), the brisket was a little dry and our food did come with a hair in it. The burnt ends were absolutely fantastic. It wasn't what we were use to but so much more. Nothing comes with a side which is a huge flaw as each a La carte side is $5+ each. I would recommend the cooks wearing hair nets as we clearly saw none of them were wearing them. Food took awhile to come out and it is a bit overpriced but I would recommend it! read more

We have been to Penn to Paper twice now and both times were great experiences. We enjoyed our Anniversary dinner here with a great dinner and dessert (Creme Brulee). and then we met some friends here and enjoyed the patio...for a little while until it started raining really hard and our waitress was able to move us inside on a busy night to finish our meal. The service has always been superb and the food delicious! Ive had the 2 meat plate with brisket and turkey and potato salad and also a stuffed baked potato with all the fixings. MY husband has had the bacon wrapped filet and Chicken fried Chicken, both very good. They make a great old fashioned. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Parking is street parking and nearby lots. Great place to try out and make a regular stop for lunch or dinner! read more

Loved the downtown area of Midlothian and this place was a great option for Saturday lunch. Nice service staff and love the decor. The menu has interesting options and that Mac n Cheese alone is worth all of the stars. Really enjoyed the fried pickles, too. I wasn't a fan of the tempura Brussels sprouts and the Smashed burger was overcooked. (But I'm willing to admit that it may be time for me to admit that I'm not a smashed burger fan since I'm usually disappointed.) I've lived in the neighborhood a little over a year and am upset at myself for not having Penn To Paper from the start. This has became one of my favorite spots hands down , not just in Midlothian but in DFW. Every meal I've had here has been top tier in each of their classes. From the brisket salad to their twist on a Philly cheesesteak, and don't forget to get some fried Oreos for your sweet tooth. There was a live saxophonist that was great. Food-wise we had wings and broccoli, burger and fries, chicken tenders and fries, and salmon with side of broccoli. My first visit here. I had burnt ends and baby back ribs. The burnt ends were mostly fat and way too salty. The ribs were bland and no real flavor. My Wife had the brisket and it was ok but not worth the trip. The Bar B Q beans were ok as was the potato salad. She also had the devil eggs and they were red white and blue. Stopped in for a late lunch on a Friday and the place wasn't very busy. I ordered the potato topped with sausage. Now when it came out there was no bbq sauce with it so we did have to ask for that. I was disappointed that the potato was still hard so I couldn't really get into it like I wanted to. The sausage was really good though I would order it again. The restaurant itself is really cute and gives a welcoming vibe. There is construction so that can make it hard to get to but overall would go back. We arrived, there was 1 other couple waiting so we waited outside. It took a bit of time for anyone to acknowledge my husband so he could be put on the wait list. The employees just kept walking by. Suggestion: hire a hostess that stays in the front. She wasn't one of the servers so her other duties might need to be changed. My husband had to tell the hostess that the other couple was there 1st (they only wanted to pick up a to go order). Didn't take long after that to get seated and Elijah saved their reputation. I just relocated to Texas a week ago. I have eaten @ penn to paper 5 times. The food n drinks are amazing! Everything I've tried on the menu has been really great. Burnt ends, salmon, Midlo wedge salad is awesome. " yummy" the queso cheese dip w\ brisket breaks my heart. Fried Oreos can do some serious damage. "Yummy". The service is excellent. My wife had gone to Penn to Paper a few weeks ago and had wanted me to try it out so we went back today for an early dinner. And I will tell you it could not have gone better. Such a nice and relaxing atmosphere, a variety of menu choices and I wish I had gotten the name of our server as she was great. A very professional but casual staff was just very impressive. I don't think they are matched anywhere in our area and we do go out to eat a bunch. And just as impressive, the food matched the service. Appetizer was the chips and queso.... My wife had the Loaded Baked Potato with Turkey. I have never seen Chicken Fried Brisket until today so I gave that a shot with us splitting an order of Sweet Potato Fries... Took home a desert of cobbler so haven't gotten around to that but guessing if it matches everything so far, it will be delicious. The prices (everything seems high now a days) were pretty much in line as everything and the two sweet teas added up to just under $70 plus tip. Easy to see, I was really impressed.
