The menu is pretty pricey. They do have occasional deals like dollar oysters, which I think it's only available on weekdays because I didn't see it on the weekend. My wife and i used to get the lunch special all the time here the food is on the expensive side but good. We had good experience until this October when the restaurant was unexpectedly closed. I ordered online on October 14th on the Monkey Thai website and went to pick it up but the restaurant was closed citing a city health inspection failure. I later called a week or two later to get a refund since the restaurant was closed but we were charged for the online order. The staff said they weren't authorized to give a refund by to email online. I emailed online multiple times, waiting a week for a response and then called again last week, the staff once again said they weren't authorized to give a refund and said they would transfer me to the owner, the owner asked for my name and number and the order number and said they would get back to me. I they called again this week as I still havent gotten a response to any of my emails or the phone call the waiter once again said they weren't authorized to give a refund a said the owner might be around tomorrow and to call again then. I'm not sure why it's been so hard to respond to any of my emails or follow up on this but it has been quite frustrating to constantly get passed along with no follow up. Safa read more

It's been awhile since I've been back to Monkey Thai but when my friend wanted to have dinner, I figured this was a good place to go. Easy to find parking and happy hour until 6 pm. Since we made it by happy hour, we ordered the gyoza. It was nice to put that in ahead of time while we waited for our food. She ordered the pad see ew and I ordered the pad kee mow. I will admit that the last time I ordered from them, I thought the pad kee mow was just okay. This time I felt like it would be a reason I'd come back! The noodles were flavorful and the plating was nicely done. The last time I felt like the noodles were a bit oily and underflavored. Well done this time around! I'm really between a 1-star and a 1.5-star review. This place was disappointing beyond means. We visited during a Sunday, just 20 minutes after 12-noon. This place had one table and a server was taking orders. Note here that the waitress saw us and didn't even acknowledge us or say that someone will be with us, just kind of ignored us. But come to think about it, only 1 worker during Sunday lunch rush? After about 6-7 minutes of just standing around and another party arriving, someone else came out from the back-where were you the whole time? As that someone came out to greet us, she said something to the effect of, "oh we seat as you'd expect, sit anywhere you'd like!" Uh, no where was there a sign that said sit anywhere we'd like. In fact, I'm pretty sure I saw a sign that said wait to be seated. But what's your excuse for your incredible inability to staff properly or even acknowledge patrons trying to give your restaurant a chance? We were seated and water was brought out-no cups. We ordered and we never heard from the wait team anymore. Mind you, there was only ever 4 total tables at any given time we were there. 1 server and 1 hostess are more than sufficient for this number of tables. But it's inexcusable for us to never hear back from either the wait staff or hostess ever again until we ask for the check, especially if the tables next to use were attended to on multiple occasions. What's up with the hate? Why were we treated differently? When we went to pay, the hostess kept giving excuses about how expensive the rent is, but what does that have to do with your lack luster service and failure at your job? Now, let's talk about the food. The food was below average. Yes, I was already in a rather unhappy mood, but the food couldn't salvage it. The Pineapple Fried rice was very soggy, where some parts of it was more "slop" than rice. The fried rice had no hints of pineapple and just large (not bite sized) chunks of pineapple. The fried rice base was more of what you'd use in crab fried rice. Disappointing. The Pad See Ew was lackluster. The food tasted bold, but not in a good way. It was bold in the sense that it felt like the oyster sauce was used too liberally and other sauces were skipped to make room for more oyster sauce. There was no depth of rich vibrant flavors like you'd experience at other Thai restaurants. The Penang Beef Curry was also a bit off. The flavors were rich and didn't have depth. It was also just a smash you with over powering 1 type of sauce. While it definitely was a Penang Curry, it just wasn't there. Also, the beef was cut in a way I wasn't used to. Three slabs of beef with too much bay leaf. I actually do try not to give 1-star reviews, but I absolutely regretted this visit. read more

We visited last month during a short trip to the Bay. I was excited to find late night eats in Alameda, and I had dined and karaoke'd here before and loved it, but this time, Monkey Thai severely missed the mark. I had to flag a server down to be seated and our drink orders were not taken for a good 20+ minutes. Thankfully we knew what we wanted to order by then because service was so slow. The drinks were nice and the food was okay, but nothing to write home about. Pad See Ew - fresh but lacked flavor. Chicken Satay - Arrived lukewarm though the sauce was delicious. Chicken Wings - Ok. I have been to their other restaurant on the west end of Alameda several years ago. Restaurant was not busy. Ahh...just the way I like it. It's quiet and I'm by myself on a solo act. After perusing the menu, I decided to have the eggplant dish with jasmine rice and lychee iced tea. I enjoyed the eggplant dish. The veggies were not overcooked and the level of spiciness was perfect. The iced lychee tea was refreshing and not overly sweet. I also like the extensive selections they offer on their menu. So many choices of items and so little time to decide. LOL. One thing I heard about Monkey Thai was they serve up pretty good garlic noodles. I will have to order their garlic noodles the next time I visit them, along with their chicken wings. The portion is generous, and as always my eyes got bigger than my stomach. I only ate one third of the meal for late lunch. It's leftovers for dinner. Customer service was very good. The waitress checked on me to make sure I was doing fine. I've eaten here several times over the years and recently ate here for lunch. Gosh, it feels like it's really gone downhill. By the peeling paint and outdated decor this place is in great need of a refresh. There were only a few tables occupied on a weekday, and no one dining outdoors. The service was dismal, our waitress seemed like a family member who wasn't at all into her job, and she wasn't able to answer any of our questions about the food. One other server, perhaps an owner, was much more friendly. I ordered a lunch special which was around $22 with a drink included. The waitress was busy but prompt. Super friendly and sweet. Their lunch specials are the way to go! You get an app, meal, and a drink for about $20. It's plenty of food too! Everything was tasty. Service was fast. The music was a bit loud, but they must have noticed and turned it down midway through. Also, it got busy and poor waitress didn't have any help so it took awhile to get our bill and some boxes. Well, my wife lost her appetite after that. A few of the tofu pieces were just very tough, like a few days old, tough... I just couldn't eat any more of her dish either. Lastly, not sure if my picture did it justice, but either you were very generous with our garlic noodle dish, or this dish got seriously skimped on. Almost half the size. In my picture, it was NOT only not heaping, but it did not go all the way to the edge of the plate like the garlic noodles. Atmosphere - Decent size place with both indoor and outdoor seating. It's ok Came mainly for the $1 oysters, and honestly not bad! They were definitely the highlight of the visit. We also ordered the papaya salad, which was unfortunately a miss. Even after asking for it spicy, it came out pretty bland and lacked the punch you'd expect from a Lao papaya salad. My craving for Thai food led me to Yelp, and Thai Monkey in Alameda popped up. Despite the rather "so-so" reviews, I decided to give it a shot. The moment I walked in, my initial impression was a sinking feeling the aesthetic was far from welcoming. I was told to "sit anywhere" by a staff member, so I picked a more spacious table by the entrance. Almost immediately, another person, whom I'll call the "seating police," curtly informed me I couldn't sit there, despite what her colleague said. I simply moved to a smaller table. The waitress took my order for pineapple fried rice and sautéed chicken, promising water in return. It was during this wait that I made a crucial error: looking at Yelp again and discovering ten health code violations. I should have walked out then and there, but I foolishly pressed on. As is my custom, I judge restaurants by their dessert menu (non-existent here), their bathroom (filthy), and their silverware. The silverware was the absolute worst - that cheap, thin kind that bends and digs painfully into your fingers with every bite. The wall near my table also looked quite unkempt, further cementing the overall impression of a less-than-clean establishment. My pineapple fried rice arrived, a solitary dish for a good 20 minutes while I patiently waited for the sautéed chicken. The waitress kept reassuring me it was "on the way." When I finally inquired about its whereabouts, I was met with the explanation of "a lot of phone orders" and another 15-minute wait. At that point, my patience was gone. I canceled the chicken, asked for the bill, and a to-go container for the rice. Beyond the frustrating service and questionable hygiene, the prices at Thai Monkey are simply too high for what you get. And honestly, having to swat away fruit flies while trying to eat really casts a shadow on the entire experience. It made me question the overall cleanliness. My verdict is clear: I will not be returning to Thai Monkey. This is a solid one-star review, solely because zero isn't an option. Do better Thai Monkey... PS the restaurant held four people, including myself the whole time I was there. So the seating police was so concerned about me, taking up a large table of a party of one. No large parties or anyone else showed up during my visit. I will say this, the young lady that waited on me was very kind and apologize for the poor Service. I ordered the garlic noodles with seafood. I thought it was delicious and a beautiful dish, but the addition of seafood was $8 more. A little disappointed about the price but I preferred seafood over the other protein options. My boyfriend got the crispy pork belly, which he said was a bit overcooked and closer to what bacon is than a good pork belly. We also shared the fried bananas. Finally tried this place during their lunch special. Location is great with lots of parking and nearby shops. When we walked in, we were told to sit anywhere. We chose to sit outside on the patio because it was a nice day. It took a few minutes for the waitress to get our water and order but we didn't mind, we noticed they were pretty short staffed. The waitress kept apologizing for the wait and explained they've been short and can't afford to hire new people right now, which we totally understand. Once we placed our orders, the food came out maybe 15-20 mins later. The portions were a lot bigger than I expected and for 22$ what a steal. The pad see ew was delicious, saucy, and well seasoned. The gyozas were crispy and filled. The egg rolls were okay, crispy in the outside but kind of soggy on the inside. The side salad was a nice refreshing touch and the Thai iced tea was yummy! Disappointed Overall I really wanted to enjoy this Thai restaurant, but my experience fell short. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly, but the quality and cleanliness just weren't where they needed to be. We tried several dishes. The yellow curry had decent flavor, but the chicken was strangely chewy and the potatoes were undercooked in the center--tasted raw, which was a letdown. The fried pork belly was okay--crispy outside, tender inside, with a nice kick from the Thai sauce. The Pad Thai with shrimp was just good--not the best I've had, but not bad either. It's actually the only thing I ended up eating. The sticky rice was the real dealbreaker. It was undercooked and oddly textured--wet in some spots, crunchy in others. Not sure if it was prepared properly or just stored poorly. On a positive note, the Thai iced tea was great--cold, sweet, and refreshing. Cleanliness was another issue. There was a thick layer of dust along the edge of our table, and the bathrooms were in rough shape--no paper towels, broken air dryer, trash on the floor and not sure when it was last mopped. It didn't feel clean or cared for. Bathrooms in restaurants are a huge factor for me. If they can't keep the restroom clean then the kitchen doesn't stand a chance. While our server was kind, no one checked on us after the food was served. Overall, there were a couple decent dishes, but not enough to bring me back. I understand that we were big party of 17, since the get go it was a mess, the waitress forgot to take everyone's order, so we had to come and ask her to come and take their orders. We had to keep asking for refills of water , we were only able to get one refill. When we got our food 4 people got the wrong orders, they didn't give them their fried rice, so she acknowledged it was her mistake also gave people the wrong plates and wanted them to switched among them although some of them already started eating; when we saw the bill she charged extra for the rice (that it was her mistake) when I asked what was the charge ($39.99) she said we ordered it, I explained to her that it was her mistake & at that point she no longer could understand what I was saying. I had to explained the situation again to the waiter... we got a refund but at first they claimed it couldn't be done. Some tables were dirty, and the mat by the kitchen it has some kind of lump under that if you are not careful you can trip on it. We did had reservations, but I don't recommend to have a big party here, they don't have experience handling it. Giving this experience 2/5.. they got my moms order wrong, and by the time the food arrived to our table, we were already waiting a while and we were hungry so she didn't bother telling them. She got the lunch combo, and instead of gyoza, she got spring rolls. And the chicken curry, BARELY had any chicken! It was mostly just potatoes, onions and carrots! And when she'd fish out the chicken in her curry, it would be small thin pieces of chicken.. we thought it really wasn't worth the $20. I ended up trying the beef larb, and it was good, but not as good compared to other places I've tried beef larb from.. I also like that they gave a ton of options, and not just one or two things to choose from. I ended up getting the yellow curry with chicken with white rice, a fresh roll, and a thai tea. The meal also came with a salad. I tend to get yellow curry when I eat out at Thai restaurants and was pleased that I got it here. Though simple, the curry was super flavorful and packed with meat, potatoes, and carrots. For a lunch combo, I was expecting smaller portions but that wasn't the case here for both the curry and rice. I ended up taking some home as leftovers which is a good deal. They didn't skimp out on meat either and everything was well cooked. The salad and fresh roll were pretty standard. I thought the thai tea was refreshing as well, and wasn't watered down or anything like that. I wasn't expecting much since I had never been here but I got a super solid experience. Got a phone call while in the parking lot - at the pick up time - saying they needed to charge me $13 more because their prices were wrong on the online menu. My only option was to accept the charger or cancel the order. I accepted the charge. I went in and they had not started making the food yet. The order was well over $100. I was forced to pay more, pay a mandatory tip, and wait, even though I ordered ahead. This is a horrible way to do business and shortsighted. This location is in south shore with plenty of parking and lots of other stuff to do and look at. They were the one of the few restaurants open late. We happen to come on a karaoke night which is every Thursday and really cool vibes. Although it got hard to carry a conversation since we were competing with the dj music and singers. We got the oysters, papaya salad, pad Thai, and pumpkin curry. The food is your average Thai food place. You can't go wrong, abut there's also nothing to really brag about. The oysters tasted fresh though. They had a really delicious red sauce that came with them that made it all worth. The service was wonderful. We were missing an entree and they checked on it and brought it out right away, apologizing for taking so long. They also came around letting everyone know it was indeed karaoke night and if we had any requests. I had the spring rolls (crispy and yum) and the Pad Thai with chicken. (yum again). You also get a small salad. My sister had the same but with the chicken green curry. The food was delicious. Great flavors and spice. Generous portions. The service was good. It's not a fancy 5 star restaurant so don't expect white glove service. But no complaints. Will definitely be back. read more

We were looking for a place to have lunch and watch the second half of the niner game. This was our third choice. First one, tv was too small and the second, staff couldn't figure out how to get the channel changed, luckily they pointed us to MT! Lots of tvs and a HUGE one and the server even turned on the volume for us, so nice! They have several beers on tap - the local alameda IPA went well with the food. Surprised with the food! Generous portions, fresh, flavorful without being salty and well executed. The heat was JUST enough. Love all the northern Thai dishes to choose from. And one of these days I am going to try the fried crickets and silk worms on the menu. Would definitely order the basil fried rice and nam phrig noom again. Packed the chili dip to bring home and will enjoy it through this week with some of my own veggies. Will add to the very short list I have for dining at SSC. read more

Crispy on the outside and spongy and hot on the inside, you WILL need a dipping sauce! FRIED SPRING ROLLS - Comes with Sweet chili sauce. Be careful, these are made to order and are super fresh and therefore super hot! Yummy and crispy! I can see how those appetizer would go wonderful with a drink, which they serve beers, cocktails and even fun bucket size cocktails. I wanna come here with co workers after work! KHAO MAN GAI - $19.95 Thai Style street food chicken rice. Comfort food alert! The rice is cooked in chicken stock/broth so it's flavorful, AND you get a side of the broth that's just so darn good. The chicken is tender, and everything about this dish was pleasant and dimple. I honestly would like to come back and I think because of the location it always slips their mind. They do however, have a sister restaurant called LAO & SUSHI BISTRO on Park, and I look forward checking to checking it out! read more
