Two stars only for this one associate who helped me before. More on that later.... BUT ZERO STARS FOR THE STORE & OTHER PERSONNEL. Came in on a Sunday looking for eye shadows. The banner by the store said that they had some 30% deal going on, store was empty, and had two associates on staff. When I came in, they were loudly discussing how someone said something to them and how they were upset ( the usual "she said he said"...). I went to one of the make up stands to see what eye shadow it had. The samples had VISIBLE DUST AND HAIR IN THEM. I went around to more stands, looked at skin care stuff too. Really wished one of them would break from their drama & help me, but no. No other person walked in, I was the only one, but none of them paid any attention. They also never told me about that 30% deal. I came in here before on two occasions & there was this one associate, cute blond young girl, who would always help me. And I bought multiple things both times! And because of her recommendations I made a third purchase online. But this time she wasn't there, and those other associates didn't help me, and I really needed help picking eyeshadows. So I walked out without a purchase. I will not be back! read more

A friend of mine gave me a gift from here. After I had got my facial I went to pay, with the gift card I had. They would not expect my gift card with out the receipt. I explained, that the gift card was a gift and I did not have the receipt for the gift card. The owner Alexandra was very, very rude. She would not expect the gift card then proceed to lock the door as if I was going to leave. I just paid for it and left. I would not be returning after this experience. As other reviewers have noted, customer service at this store is awful, almost nonexistent. I visited the store a few months ago and received very little service. The 2 employees who were there talked mainly to each other, about themselves, and loud enough that you could hear every word of their conversation. I have been shopping at the Bluemercury on 17th and Walnut St. in Philadelphia for years and have had two different store managers, (Callie and Jacquesha) that were very lovely people. I am so surprised by the horrible reviews. Every single visit to this store I have always been greeted even when they were extremely busy. The associates have always been knowledgeable and helpful. What I hate and what I will always hate is when I'm in line and the person in front of me has been waited on and has left the building while I'm standing in line and waiting to be checked out. In this case the employee has her back to me the entire time, ignoring me as if she didn't see me. Want to know how I know she saw me???? Ask me - please ask!!! Okay I'll tell you... the worlds largest fucking mirror is in front of her. What she had to do was so important that she couldn't tell me to go to another specific employee to get checked out. I want to give this a better rating but the ladies (one specific woman, didn't catch her name), was particularly unsavory. That said, whenever I go to a store where I could easily spend over $100 on one product, perhaps my expectations are a bit higher for the level of service (and more importantly how user friendly they are). Unfortunately I didn't get the experience I have at other Blue Mercurys prior to this. I did make a purchase because of a promotion the had going on, but I felt harried, unwanted, and like questions were not unwelcome and were quite frankly a bother to them during their day. I happen to know several associate lis and managers in the Greater NYC and Philly area, and I have come to expect a knowledgeable, welcoming salesperson. Sadly I didn't get that which ruined what's normally a 20 minute peaceful and rewarding beauty experience from a company I'd expect more from. If you're in need of a higher end beauty item, and this is the only location available to you, then go for it. I was really excited to finally find a BM near me. The store itself is GORGEOUS and had all my usual brands. My experience was unfortunately negative due to the lack of customer service, or even acknowledgment. I walked in and smiled to the sales associate who was occupied with a clearly well known customers baby. Although it was just myself and the known shopper in the store, I was never acknowledged or asked if I needed help. I was hoping to re-up my La Mer, get some recommendations for hair care, and buy some home items from Diptyque and The Nest. I felt like a nuisance to the associate for having to scoot around her obsessively complimenting her favorite customer and overall left feeling invisible. Came in here for the first time. First impression was that the store was extremely over filled and there was products literally everywhere but not in a good way. Too much clutter. Next I walked around for about ten minutes and was intrigued with the choice but didn't know where to begin or what was top products. There was also quite a few staff members around who were too busy chatting with each other to even greet me or ask if I needed help. They saw me, refused to say anything and continued to gossip. I was so shocked. I was going to leave when I decided to ask for help since no one was interested in helping. The lady who helped me picked out two items which I bought. After she was asking for my name to add me to their registry. She only took my last name which is SUPER common and the first letter of my first name and came to the conclusion that i was already In the system and I told her it's my first time so that's impossible but she kept Saying no you're here you're here. And I kept saying uh definitely not. I had to ask what the first name was and then only she was like oh. Like seriously ?! Anyways not worth going to! read more

There's no man who could ever endure the pain associated with a Brazilian wax. If there were such a man, or woman for that matter, looking to experience the most painless and satisfying procedure, (s)he better look to Kim at bluemercury. She wielded that wax with the utmost precision and grace. Unlike, other hair removal spots that use duct tape to strip away the unwanted comrades (*ahem International Salon), Kim applied the gentleness of a lamb and stripped away with the force of a lion. She was so great that I even got a facial afterward. In our dimly lit room, she massaged the chunks of cheek on my face and even gave me a shoulder and neck rub. The only awkward part was when I put the robe on as a cape, to which she exclaimed, "it's not meant to be worn like Batman, Monica." I may never feel totally comfortable naked before a stranger's eyes, but Kim put me right at ease and got the job done quickly and painlessly! read more

Alexandra's review reminded me of a very annoying experience that I had at bluemercury a few years ago. I went in there on my lunch break, purchased a NARS lipgloss, and went back to work. About an hour later, I got the lipgloss out and realized that the salesgirl had given me the wrong shade (instead of a nice pearlescent pink, it was blazing orange -- just not my color, sorry!) I walked back over to the store and they told me that 1) they didn't have the shade in stock that I had asked for (despite having it out as a tester) and 2) I couldn't get a refund for my purchase, but could only get store credit. The girl who had sold me the item was nowhere to be found. I tried to politely point out that I had only been in there an hour ago, and that I never would have bought anything at all if I had realized that the shade I wanted was out of stock, but they would.not.budge. Unbelievably bad service. Eventually I had to settle for a lip gloss from a different line and $1.25 in store credit (thanks so much bluemercury!) I even called their "customer service" line to complain about the policy (which is something I never do!) and never heard back. I've window shopped in there since then, as they do carry a pretty nice range of products, but I'm extremely reluctant to purchase when I know that I can buy most of those lines at other stores with more return-friendly policies. read more

During my recent trip to Philly, I had the misfortune of leaving my facial cleanser at home. Seeing as the weather is a lot more humid than Denver, I knew I needed something to tame my oily skin. The concierge at the Four Seasons recommended I check out BlueMercury as she thought they would carry the line of skincare products I was asking about. A short walk down the street from the Four Seasons and only a block off of Rittenhouse Square, BlueMercury is where it's at for all of your beauty needs! The shop manager, Elizabeth, was extremely welcoming and professional instantly upon us walking into the store. She gave me her full attention and helped me pick out the best products I would need for the humidity, and also for the dryness back home in Denver. Coming in for just a facial cleaner, I ended up leaving with a whole bag full of facial goodness. My favorite product I picked up has to be the M61 chemical peel wipes with the lavender and vitamin C after treatment. It's too bad they don't have a store in Denver or I would be all over this everytime I had a skin disaster. Good news is Elizabeth gave me the store's number and said they could ship anything to my home address should I need to order more. She also hooked me up with a couple samples of various products she thought I might like to try. I have been more than impressed with the level of detail and customer service I received at this location. It's tempting just to make a trip back to Philly just to restock. Thanks again! read more

Excellent customer service. I had a very sweet girl apply my makeup for a wedding over the weekend. I didn't know what I wanted but told her I was going for more of a goddess look for hair and dress. So she quickly (it was a last min decision to get professional make up application) applied the makeup and did a really great job. I also liked how she explained what she was using and why. I was very satisfied and purchased some awesome products and even got hooked up with lots of samples. I like the lay out of the store it was bright and easy to locate products. The other lady who was doing my friends makeup was also super nice and did a great job on my friend. If you are looking for a very helpful store with great products stop in here. read more

Go to Bluemercury to pick up products you already want to buy, never go to learn more about beauty. I can't tell you how many times I've wandered in here, hoping to pick up something to help my acne. At first I thought that the saleswomen were helpful and very knowledgeable, but soon realized that this was just a product of my naive imagination. It is not clear to me that these ladies know anything about skincare at all; I can get different and opposite information as I ask each saleswoman for recommendations. Furthermore, some ladies are only there to promote specific products, which they don't make clear to you from the start (or maybe I just don't know how to decipher the secret language of cosmetic stores?). This one Clinique lady was so bad she even tried to convince me the reason a product was not working out for me was because I needed to buy ANOTHER Clinique product to go along with it (I tried it because I was daft and desperate--of course nothing good happened). Some people enjoy their make-up parties, where artists from reputable brands such as Bobby Brown and Laura Mercier come in to give customers free makeovers. The one time I went (for Bobby Brown), the lady made me look like Geisha and said "this is how I do all my asian girls."....right, then. Please, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and do some research before you come into this store. If you want more informative service you can try Sephora, but don't expect an ounce of help from Bluemercury. read more

I really, really want to like Blue Mercury, but no matter how much I try I just can't get into it. I agree with the other reviewers that the sales people are very overbearing. It's a small store already and it's made much worse by all 9 of the sales people following you around and individually asking you if you need help finding anything. When you actually do need help they're ok but they're always trying to upsell you. I've working in retail for years so I understand how it works, especially in what must be a commission situation, but it's just irritating to not be able to ask where something is without someone trying to sell you a bunch of overpriced makeup brushes. The thing I like least about this store is that frequently when I shop there I am using a gift card because I get one a couple times a year... well wait until the sales people follow you around for an entire shopping trip and then get you up to the counter and pull out a gift card. I have literally never checked out at this Blue Mercury without the sales person being clearly annoyed that they're not making any money off of me. In short, their customer service is seriously lacking. The sales people are pushy and follow you around like you're trying to steal something the whole time. Worse still, last time I was there I stood at the counter for 5 minutes waiting to be rung up while the 3 people standing directly in front of me on the other side of the counter continued their conversation. I was too in awe to interrupt. I have a giftcard in my wallet now that I would love to use on some new makeup, but I'm dreading having to go shopping there. 3 stars are all for their selection, although prior to the new Sephora on Chestnut St it was really sucky that they didn't (and don't) carry Bare Minerals. read more

This store is a wonderful place to get lotions, potions, and beauty products of call kinds. It's a wonderfully clean store, with hardwood floors and high ceilings. And they've got everything, from L'Occitane to Bliss products to Nars makeup and everything in between. You name the makeup or beauty line seen in fashion magazines, etc., and you'll find it here. The displays are also beautiful, and the sales ladies are really helpful. Finally, they have a spa in the back, which I have not tried, but I plan to. I just wish I had more money because I can't afford to shell out $20-30 something per product very regularly. But if you can afford it, I really recommend this place for all of your beauty needs. read more

Such a nice little place! I came there with my mom and her little dog Gomez. I asked tentatively if he could come in and they all lit up with enthusiasm. "Oh, of course! We love dogs!! Please do!" It was pretty nice, considering the fact that my mom was freaking out before wondering if the stores were dog-friendly. And that's where my lovely little journey to bluemercury began. I started looking around, and an older woman helped me. She was very very sweet and answered my random questions with plenty of information and hospitality. I didn't find the staff to be overbearing at all. I asked her about tinted moisturizer, mascara, eye shadow, skin care stuff, etc. I ended up getting only two things: mascara and an eye lash curler. However, I also ended up with 5 amazing samples! Walking in to the store, I wasn't actually even thinking of buying anything. I wanted to just check it out. I was a little bummed by their selection...I wish they had a bit more to offer, but then again, they're not Sephora, and I can appreciate and definitely support a smaller business. To top it off, it was a great location, smelled lovely, looked clean, and had a very nice ambiance to it. Overall, great experience. read more

Though I was a bit apprehensive about going back to bluemercury, the woman that helped me out at this Walnut St. location was nothing but friendly and even apologized (who does that nowadays?) when she heard about my bad experience at the Ardmore store. Though I was only in to pick up a Laura Mercier eyeliner, she took the time to point out the differences in each shade and helped me to decide on a final colour. Hey, it's the little things that count! Will be more comfortable returning here in case I want to splurge on some of the gorgeously scented candles or the extensive Ren skincare line. read more

Like most of the other places on my Philly fragrance list (WIP), I've passed by here countless times. Same story, I never knew they carried fragrance or men's products at all. The selection here was a bit of a shocker in that they have most of the Creed collection (or a lot of it I should say). The same stuff you'll find at Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales... minus the commute. I was really surprised to see it, but not at all surprised when the sales rep tried to sell me the most expensive thing on the shelf from the get go. Blue Mercury has few brands compared to other stores, but those brands run deep in selection. I'm not a fragrance expert, but I know a few a things. A couple of their brands may be designer in general, but I think the fragrance houses fit in the niche category... I'm talking Creed, Diptyque, Chanel, Jo Malone, Tom Ford, and Acqua Di Parma. I'd say they range toward the high-end without going all the way. The staff was helpful and kind enough to whip up a couple of samples for me. Much obliged! Overall, I'd say Blue Mercury is the upper echelon of fragrance in Philly (not necessarily exclusively...), It checks off a box that helps define Walnut Street as a destination for shopping. Fragrance? Blue Mercury... Check. PRO-TIP: They have another location in University City to which I haven't been, but have been passing by since time immemorial. read more

Bluemercury is located in a beautiful, historic space located in Philadelphia's quaint and diminutive counterpart to Chicago's Miracle Mile. Have been a customer of the spa and retail shop since Bluemercury opened in the early aughts. The spa services---and I have sampled all of them---are phenomenal. The front of the store is equally spectacular. The two things that distinguish Bluemercury from its peers: (1) its sales associates who attentively listen to your needs and (2) honest assessments of the products. I have never felt pushed to buy any particular product or line, and I am very sorry to read that others have had unfortunate experiences here. Through Bluemercury, I was introduced to the products of Philip B, Bliss, Peter Thomas Roth and Mario Badescu, among others, and I continue to use these lines to this day. read more

Do yourself a favor and go to Blue Mercury. I was a little hesitant at first because the prices are steep, but at the end of the day, the level of knowledge, service and general vibe (and of course the AMAZING aromas that permeate!) make the experience and the price points worth it. Blue Mercury is in a lovely old house on Walnut and is filled to the brim with the best face/body products around. I like to go and get my make up done when I'm buying something... you leave feeling fabulous! The staff is very warm and helpful and they will not point you in the wrong direction. So I reviewed another salon recently for their Brazilian waxing, but had a not so great experience the last time I was there. The daughter performed the service, and she seemed to be in a really really really bad mood, and she took it out on my lady parts. Not only was it PAINFUL, but she left strays and I had ingrown hairs (yes, I used the correct products afterwards). After reading some glowing reviews about Kim at bluemercury, I booked an appointment. Upon my arrival, she greeted me with a smile and a handshake. The procedure did take a little longer, but it was almost painless compared to the other salon. The price was worth the lack of brutality. I am happy and so are my lady parts. read more

So this is an **Updated review! After trying the products recommended to me, I really saw no improvements (for the hefty cost!) -I even broke out from the Darphin face wash. I returned them, and was directed to a different face wash-only to return that one as well! The products I received were very watery, and you didn't feel like you got a real clean/improvement. I went back to Rescue Spa-I can confidently say their products work noticeably within a week or less! I only went to Blue Mercury to see if there was something less costly but as effective. I think my favorite part of Blue Mercury is walking in the door- it's a really beautiful space and everything is presented very well- the diptyque candles are front and center, and that would be enough to get me in the door of any place. Obviously they don't have the selection Sephora does, but that's the point- it's edited. I'll always choose to buy something at Blue Mercury over Sephora if I can, just cause Sephora is such an assault on the senses... like a cross between a mall and a nightclub. I generally avoid sales staff as much as possible in any store, especially cosmetic places. Thank god there are places like blue mercury and sephora so that I never again have to deal with a department store make up counter lady. But yeah, I'll generally wait until no one's looking and root around in the drawers to find my tinted moisturizer or whatever for myself. And god help anyone who tries to sit me in that barstool and put makeup on me. My mom and I come here periodically to restock the stuff we use all the time, and then have it shipped to her house in DE (no sales tax!) and they always fill the box with the best samples ever. Like, samples so big you'd happily pay for them. I've found a lot of great stuff I wouldn't have tried before that way. I'm not surprised to read reviews of the sales staff being a little bitchy. They're always reasonable to me, but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm there with my mom- when I'm not I get the "what are you even doing here?" face. (I hate that- I'm 25, I pay my own bills and buy my own eyeliner and exfoliating masques... I'm shopping with my mom because she's delightful and has great taste, not so she'll pick up the tab) Whenever I'm here I spend way longer wandering around than I really need to but I've never been rushed out of there. Had my makeup done for a wedding on Saturday by Gene or (Jean?) and she was amazing! She knew exactly what worked for me after I told her what kind of look I was going for...she nailed it! Great staff, product selection and location. I did not experience any of the high pressure sales techniques that some of the other reviewers have and was actually shown and directed towards a brand that was about a third of the price of the one that I originally went in to look at. The service was great and all of the staff helpful and worked together to answer the questions that I had. They even made up quite generously sized custom samples of products to take home and try before making any decisions. I have read more of their return policy since making my initial purchase and hope that I don't have any problems with any of the products because a "store credit only" policy is totally out of date and unacceptable for any retailer these days... I was a tried and true Kiehl's customer for the last fifteen years but with less than stellar and what I find to be obnoxious service here at the Philly location I think I'll be sticking with REN here at bluemercury. read more

Bluemercury carries a wide range of skin and hair care products that cover all skin/hair types and price points. Two of my favorite skin care brands; REN and Mario Badescu are carried here, which is great as they are not widely available in the Philadelphia area. The staff can be hit or miss. Some very nice, very helpful employees, and then some very rude and snotty employees. I've had a facial done in their spa, it was decent but not wow-worthy. read more

I walked in to Blue Mercury with voluminous and slightly bushy brows, I walked out defeated. I hadn't had my eyebrows shaped in a few months, due to a a bad experience and wanting them to return to their preferred state of natural and full. I asked the esthetician to clean them up but keep them full. The esthetician spent a while on my brows. After commenting on my "difficult brows" multiple times, she handed me the mirror and I almost burst into tears. I said "they are very thin" and she said she was "trying to make them match. " Now as most women know, brows are sisters - not twins. And they didn't match. Remotely. I paid and left, and was 5 feet out of the store before the tears began to roll. This is not what I asked for. I'm in a wedding this weekend which is why I wanted them cleaned up, but now I feel horrible and ugly. RIP left eyebrow, I hope to see you again some day. read more

I was actually referred to this location by a staff member at another (competing) salon when their local esthetician didn't show up. My skin was dull and I really needed a facial. Kim was a wonderful professional, who was knowledgeable (sung the praises of the products my dermatologist prescribed to me!) and incredibly gentle and soothing. My skin glowed for days after and I felt so pampered and well taken care off. I'd be back if it wasn't so prohibitively expensive! read more

I recently had a facial with Victoria. She was very nice and gave wonderful information about the products she was using on my skin. She chose the lactic peel for me (I'm dry and looking to brighten my skin.) My skin looks and feels wonderful even 2 weeks later! Smack in the middle of Center City lies this beautiful small boutique, where you'll find upscale skincare, makeup, fragrances, hair care products, candles and general grooming goodness. They've got the usual suspects (Bliss, Frederic Fekkai) cult following favorites ( N.V. Perricone M.D.,Terax, Shu Uemura- think eyelash curler) Classics ( think grandma's bathroom - Darphin, Molton Brown, Acqua Di Parma) ....and they're equal opportunity groomers, so the boys will like it too - even the non metro guys! (though he'll stand in the corner rolling his eyes for street cred. No doubt he's secretly eyeing the Anthony Logistics Razor Burn Repair behind you, trust me.) Sure, if you want the entire Kiehl's line you'll have to walk down the block, but Blue Mercury carries the 'best seller' products of each brand...and for the smaller or independent manufacturers, they cover the full line. If the cool packaging doesn't draw you in, the chic, shiny staff will. Beware! They are quite knowledgeable and sure, learning about the latest green vegan chicken friendly product line is fun, (did I mention they have some awesome up and coming brands as well?) but before you know it, 2 hours have passed and you're in credit card debt. Save the mascara purchase for Rite Aid, but get the face wash here! There's a small spa/salon which is part of the store as well...I've never tried it myself (other than a one time eyebrow wax which was, well, an eyebrow wax) but I've heard mixed opinions....if we're talking haircuts, I suppose I'll have to review House Productions next... read more

you can get these products anywhere - esp if you're savvy and shop online. walnut street is riddled with beauty places from beans to sephora and now ulta. so yeah i like nars a LOT and Fresh and a lot of other high end brands that i would want to buy at bluemercury. but when i go in there the sales people are straight up RUDE. If they are knowledgeable they don't share it with me, especially considering this place is barren like 90% of the times I've gone in there. and the selection is high end but its not THAT diverse. I don't know if it's because i don't look like i have money, or because i have visible tattoos... but that shouldn't matter.
