I will literally never come here again. First off, the middle aged woman at the front desk needs to work on her customer service skills. She has the WORST attitude. I used to be a dog sitter and I was watching a miniature pincher at the time. The owner left me a signed note saying if she needed emergency services, I have her permission. Because in VA dogs are property. Well this wasn't good enough for front desk witch. Which is so ironic because they called the owner of the dog and they didn't even speak to her after giving me the most hard time. She didn't explain to me that I had to put the owners info on the intake form, so I had to cross everything out and write next to it because apparently giving me a new piece of paper isn't in their budget. And she was RUDE AS HELL every time I had a question or concern. This dog decided when I went to bathroom to knock over my trash can and eat TWO giant crumbl cookies. They were both chocolate!!! That's A LOT of sugar and chocolate for a dog. I went here because bay beach wasn't accepting new customers which was so irritating because I've never had a good experience at blue pearl. Well, the vet and vet techs made me WASTE FOUR HOURS calling poison control (which was $95 by the way) just for them to end up making her puke, again, FOUR HOURS LATER and when the vet came in and said "yeah... she puked A LOT. like, I mean a lot". No shit. I could have actually slapped him. SINCE they waited so long to make her vomit I had to then bring her for an overnight at bay beach because she was showing signs of chocolate toxicity. Which really aggravated me because I BROUGHT HER TO BLUE PEARL FOR A REASON. I don't want to hear "oh it's protocol to call poison control" I TOLD YOU A TINY DOG ATE TWO GIANT COOKIES. THATS TOO MUCH SUGAR AND CHOCOLATE FOR A DOG HER SIZE. I ended up spending $600 that night. Just for her to almost die because of their lack of urgency and knowledge. I'll NEVER come here EVER again. And I'll keep spreading the word that you guys shouldn't be used at all. And if you guys remember pepper, that's exactly who I'm talking about. You guys are useless as f. I'm still considering a lawsuit because that was BULL. So yeah, if you want your pet to get the most mediocre "care" for an arm and a leg, go here. My vet told me to take my dog to BluePearl after he had a reaction to the antibiotics they gave him and couldn't walk correctly. ABBY who answered the phone was rude and dismissive and would not let us come there and said take him to the ER. Despite me telling her he is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom. Where is the human element these days? no compassion! she cut me off and told me to take him to the ER. Yes, is an emergency but it's not an ER emergency. Brought my cat in on a Thursday for bronchoscope with pulmonary lavage and told final results would take 2 weeks. Today is 16 days since testing & I have called 3 times this week. I was told once they were going to call lab to see if they could get results and they would call me back, they did not. I called yesterday and told the team was in a procedure and would call me back, they did not. Today when I called I was told I could bring my cat into the urgent care to be seen, that's just busy work, he's already been seen, I just need the results. I was also told this provider does not work on Fridays or Monday's, however was not told this yesterday (Friday) when I called. Told provider would not be in until Tuesday & I would have to wait. How quickly and efficiently they got us in after trying so many different other places that didn't have appointments available. Once we got there, the team was on top of coming out and getting him immediately and explaining what they were doing all around my experience there was amazing because I do believe they saved my baby, literally on the car ride home he started to perk up and by the time we got home, he was definitely back to his old self. I feel if I would've waited any longer or would have waited for an appointment that others are trying to give me things would've gone in a different direction. I am writing this to express my gratitude to the wonderful staff at Blue Pear Town Center. They have treated all of our dogs for various emergent problems over the years. Each time, they were caring, professional and thorough. When the time came to make the heartbreaking decision to have our dogs euthanized - due to age and infirmity - they were compassionate, patient and kind. Three times they have helped us with this difficult task. Each time, the process was made a bit easier by the folks at Blue Pearl. They, like all the other Veterinary clinics in the area, are struggling with a lack of licensed veterinarians and other staff. Still, they afforded us the individualized attention one would expect from a smaller, less inundated clinic. Absolutely horrible experience on Sunday, November 28, 2021. I brought in my critically sick dog. Because of COVID-19, I called from the parking lot. I was told they couldn't see him because they "were at capacity" for the day. No offer even to triage him. While I did find another place, my dog was dead three hours later. My wife called and complained the next day. The manager told her the "truth" which was that they actually had no vet on duty that day. No one ever wants to visit an emergency room, but the staff at BluePearl made it as positive an experience as it could have been. My cat had been ill for a while and had been seen by my regular vet, but she took a sudden downturn over a holiday weekend and the only option was an emergency vet. They were able to work with me on price of treatment and were very friendly for the entirety of the visit. The only downside to this visit was my having to wait to hear what they had found, but that's pretty par for the course in any emergency room. Unfortunately, I had to take my cat back the next day after she started having difficulty breathing and she passed away before I arrived. The staff was compassionate and gave me all the time I needed to say goodbye. Not having to take care of cremation arrangements was a relief, and there was an option to get a cast of her pawprint as a keepsake. Overall, they made a terrible situation as good as it could have been. read more

The staff was so overwhelmingly fantastic when I took my pet there last night. I was sick myself and they came out to the car to get my dog, and registered me over the phone. they were just wonderful to me and to my dog. I would recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone anytime for any reason they are fantastic. I did see some pretty bad reviews from some people on here and I don't know how they experience that but I can tell you that BluePearl is a great and welcoming place. Very nice facility that is everything you could want for your pet when they are having an emergency, just call ahead and get your Emergency Appointment and be prepared to wait on hold for a long time. For urgent matters that are not critical, plan on waiting all day in their parking lot. Don't expect anything to be timely to be well thought out. I called at 9:30 with my pets condition and waited in the parking lot for 2 hours before being told that it would be another 4-6 hour wait. They simply do not have the staff to handle the volume of work in the area. read more

Rosie had a fever for a month. She presented with other symptoms (limping, excessive drooling, not eating kibble) Our vet treated her for Lyme. They finally realized it wasn't Lyme. Our Doctor referred us to Blue Pearl because they had no idea how to treat her. I brought her in next day and they admitted her at Blue Pearl. It was excruciating leaving her there for 4 days. The only way she could see a specialist so quickly. Would've taken months to get an appointment, otherwise. They had to do joint taps to see if it was IMPA. They called us constantly to update and they even took our phone calls when we had questions. They care. Dr. Patterson is amazing. We are still trying to get Rosie back to her old self but they have helped immensely. Do not hesitate if you have a pet emergency. This place is phenomenal. read more

I want to give everyone at Blue Pearl Town center my absolute gratitude! My 11 year old Mastiff had an open wound with an artery spirting bleed, my wife held pressure on the artery for well over an hour, literally keeping him alive until we finally arrived at Blue Pearl. We called every "Emergency Vet" in our area (Great Bridge) and they All told us they don't deal with bleeds and turned us away, some rudely. We quickly decided we had no other choice but to broaden our frantic search and finally found Blue Pearl on Independence blvd VaBch. They told us to continue to hold pressure and get him there asap. It was nearly a 25 minutes drive and we were losing hope but when we got there they were waiting for us at the door and rushed him in post haste, like they really cared and wanted to save his life. About 10-15 minutes later the tech came out to tell us they had stopped the bleeding and he was stable. 30 to 45 minutes after that the Doctor met with us to go over the treatment. He and his incredible team saved our family members life when no one else near us was willing. They went above and beyond and we will be forever grateful. As for All of these other "Emergency Vets" in the great bridge area, they should be ashamed and as far as I am concerned, should be stripped of any kind of "Emergency" titling, maybe even the "Vet" title. I want to thank the staff and doctors at Blue Pearl for their help and service. We had to help our beloved 14 year old boxer pass today. While her health condition as a senior boxer was known to us, we did not anticipate her passing today. My family was on vacation. I called several after hour vets close to our vacation spot and none answered. Blue Pearl answered and we drove 2.5 hours to them to try to save our beloved family member or prolong the inevitable. Blue Pearl did everything they could to ensure her comfort and peace. They even contacted our family veterinarian to consult on possible treatment plans and options, given our family vet's long history with treating her. In the end, Blue Pearl helped us make the right decision and was their with us the entire time. They also worked with us to help get her remains home to our family for proper burial and closure. I can't thank them enough. I never want to experience putting a beloved family pet to sleep, but I feel confident that Blue Pearl did the right thing for her and prevented her from prolonged suffering. While I am emotionally devastated at the loss, I'm also comforted in knowing that she passed peacefully. Laci, we will always love and remember you. read more

This review is in regards to my dogs euthanasia and his body's after care: I took my sweet dog to get euthanized (at the Town center, Virginia Beach, VA location) due to his debilitated condition. They explained the process and made us feel comfortable. Everyone who helped from beginning to end were amazing: Dr. Trainer, Jasmine and Tina. They use Agape cremation pet services and everything they did for little mans after care was impressive. His ashes came back to me in a beautiful urn with his name on it. The paw print was perfect. They also enclosed a small tuff of hair, as well as grieving support/ resources. The pamphlets really helped our family get through this difficult time. I highly recommend this clinic, it is worth the wait. I can't put into words how appreciative I am, that this clinic was here for us, to alleviate the pain my (dog) son was going through. read more

I am Appalled that I went back here for a 3rd time, but I was hoping to not have to pay more than the $1300 I had already paid previously for my dogs staple removal by going to another clinic. What a terrible judgement call on my behalf. Let me start from the beginning..... On Dec. 20th 2019 I came home from a trip to the gym to every pet owners worst nightmare. My house was covered in blood, it literally looks like a murder scene. Two of my dogs had gotten into a fight over what we assume was one of the rawhide bones we left out for them, my 11yr old female had beat up my 4 year old pretty badly leaving some puncture wounds on his two front legs and around the ear area. After assessing both dogs I decided immediately Loki needed to go to the emergency vet, with clouded judgment all I could think of that was open was blue pear and oFf we went. We stepped though the doors both of us covered in blood around 8:45 pm, Loki was taken to the back while I was presented with a payment paper I needed to sign in order for him to get any care. I was moved to a room almost immediately where I waited for about 30-45 min. When the doctor came in they told me they gave him some pain meds and basically that he was laying in a cage bleeding. Over the next 2.5 hours they presented me with various paper quotes all while seemingly avoiding any questions I would ask them directly. The doctor on duty Kaitlin Knaszak spoke to me as if I was a child and has the bedside manner of a urine soaked sponge with her rudeness, cold attitudes, inadequate listening skills, and a complete disregard for the patient's (owners) fears. After asking several times if my dog was stable enough to transport so I could take him elsewhere and not being answered directly I decided to let them treat him there simply due to the fear of not knowing what was happening to my pet and wanting him to have care since he had been confined to a cage for so long with from what I saw excessive blood loss. They asked me to leave him and make sure I was back before 7am. They called around 5:50 and I headed over. He was not released to me until 9:30am. 10 staple locations/stitches later and $1315.64 later I got to take my boy home....... This is not the end though.... I knew I would need to return to have the stitches and staples removed unless I wanted to incur another charge from a different vet. On 1/3/20 I called to ask the process of the removal and if it was a good time to come in, I discussed with the person on the phone if after hours was suitable and proceeded to make the 30 minute drive with my dog and 4 year old. We arrived at 7pm, after the first hour past and I watched several people come into the waiting room and then get taken into rooms I went to ask the front desk how much longer it would be, she proceeded to tell me that the staple removal was a quick process and they would be getting me in a room shortly and that the other two patients were stat. I waited there until after 9:15pm with no help, no staple removal. Luckily we have an amazing pet ER called Acerdale that saw my baby that night took his stitches and Staples out within 15 minutes and didn't even charge me. That's right they had to clean up the mess that blue pearl made and WOULD NOT FIX. I hope nobody ever has to deal with this dreadful, conniving, nightmare of a vet. I am adding pictures of what my dog looked like when I took him in the night of the incident, a picture of the extremely overpriced bill and pictures of tonight when we were trying to get his sutures removed. Please, please for your sanity and your pets well being avoid this place like the plague. read more

Today was our last appointment at Blue Pearl for our sweet dog, Miley. We have put a lot of thought and prayers in to what our next step with Miley's cancer would be. And after today's appointment we know we made the right decision, although it doesn't make it any easier. We have decided to end her chemo treatment and just monitor her and let her enjoy life. Dr. Rinaldi and his team were amazing throughout this whole journey and we cannot thank them enough for everything they have done. At our appointment today Dr. Rinaldi agreed with our decision and stated that if we did choose to continue a new chemo route, he would only give it about a 30% that it would show any impact or improvement. Unfortunately her cancer has just been too strong and has fought back to every medicine adjustment they have made. Praying for many days, months, and hopefully years left with out sweet Miley. I hope we are never in an emergency situation again with any of our dogs, but if so, we will go to Blue Pearl, no doubt about it! read more

We have taken our dogs to Blue Pearl during their health emergencies for the last six years and we've always received *nothing* but top-notch care. First experience: New puppy had accidentally gotten into human medication that had fallen on the floor. She was treated at Blue Pearl and kept under observation until they cleared her and discharged her. Second experience: Our five-year-old black lab had a blockage that our regular vet couldn't identify clearly with X-rays. We were advised to take her to Blue Pearl where she was diagnosed with a small intestinal obstruction (a corn cob, of all things, that was discovered during surgery. She stayed a few days for post-op care then was discharged in perfect health. Third experience: Our six-year-old yellow lab was seen by our regular vet after several vomiting episodes and pronounced jaundiced eyes. We were advised to take her to Blue Pearl for more intensive ultrasound and other diagnostic testing. Turned out she had liver disease and they literally tried *everything* to stabilize her. Also a spot was found on her spleen and liver that seemed to indicate cancer. They kept her for two days and contacted us for a week thereafter to find out how she was doing with the ton of medications they had sent us home with. Literally a "hail Mary pass" on their part to try to buy her more time. Surgery wasn't possible, they felt she very likely wouldn't survive. With their medications and expert guidance, we were able to cherish a final month with darling Abby. We had to let her go to the Rainbow Bridge this very evening. Please remember that when you go to Blue Pearl, you aren't visiting a neighborhood veterinarian. You are interacting with credentialed *specialists* in their given fields. You are in a critical care hospital environment that is not going to be cheap. At the same time remember, that when we as humans go to a hospital for intensive care, we have medical insurance. At Blue Pearl, there is no insurance to cover pet emergencies. We have nothing but the best to say about the care our dogs have received at Blue Pearl. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes. Awesome professionals staff Blue Pearl. We will always turn to them in the future as necessary! read more

This feedback is in regard to a specialist I visited with, Nicholas Rinaldi, DVM in Virginia Beach on Friday, August 24. While the service I received in person was good - I thought, I was shocked and dismayed to learn about the unwillingness of the specialist to work with my cat's local veterinarian on a treatment plan. Not only does this raise some serious red flags to me in terms of confidence in the treatment he was prepared to engage in, but it unnecessarily delays the treatment of a animal who is suffering through no fault of her own. While animals may just be another file or patient to your providers, that is not what they are to pet parents like myself - or to their regular veterinarians, who have shown a sincere love for them, and what they do. She was brought into the world in an emergency surgery at the Richmond, VA SPCA in 2004 after her mother, a pregnant stray, passed away. Only two kittens survived, but both had health issues, including the feline herpes virus, and having her eyelid fused to her eyeball. She lived for a year at the SPCA because nobody wanted to adopt a black, special needs cat. She didn't even stay in a cage or kennel - she lived in the chief veterinarian's office. I never expected to adopt a cat, but after visiting the center in hopes of adopting a dog, a small cat that was in the lobby literally reached out and grabbed me. Since that day, she has been part of my life. At one point where I was severely depressed, she did nothing short of save my life. I will do whatever I can to protect her and ensure she gets the care she deserves. Having a specialist unwilling to even share treatment information with her veterinarian, who is quite experienced, is unprofessional and heartless. This has made a devastating, stressful experience exponentially worse. I will do everything I can to make my experience about Blue Pearl in Virginia Beach known to others, so they can avoid the stress, anger, and disappointment I am experiencing, and instead get their pet the proper treatment they need to survive. Our pup was seen yesterday and prescribed narcotics for post-surgical pain. This evening she was screaming when defecating. Odds are the drugs constipated her some and strained her surgical site. So we called to get a stool softener. We were told the vet thought the softener might not be necessary but we could come in, NO ADDITIONAL VISIT FEE, so he could reevaluate the prescriptions and dosages with her. After an hour wait, we are called back and told it would be a full charge since though it was the next day, more than 24 hours had passed. What? You had our chart when we called, talked with the vet, then got back on the line when you offered out to come in at no office fee because day before. The number of hours was known. Bait and switch? Incompetence? Whichever one, unacceptable and unprofessional. Got to find a reputable emergency vet because it certainly isn't Blue Pearl. read more

We took our puppy in because she was showing signs of an upper respiratory infection and wasn't eating/drinking. The doctor and assistant didn't listen and did a test for CPV and treated her dehydration, they then offered x rays and hospitalization. All in all, the process took all day, and all they were concerned with was how much money we would give them. If you care about your animal, don't go here. read more

When I got there the receptionist said they were only accepting 'critical' patients as if "a couple minutes ago". This place is a JOKE!!! We have a diabetic older cat. He's been on insulin for years. This morning he was having a seizure, so we took him to our vet. His sugar was off and our vet recommended that we take him to Blue Pearl so his glucose levels could be monitored. We sat in our car for 3-hour and heard nothing from the doctor inside. We finally told them to pack up our cat and took him home. I'm not sure what our plan is but NEVER again to Blue Pearl. read more

Today I rescued a kitten on then freeway, we were greeted by a very friendly lady. Then one of the vet assistants was incredibly rude to us. When I walked in I was asked if I was taking ownership of the cat. I explained yes, the the rude assistant goes "they can't do that?!". Why would you say that in front of a client? Then later on a gentleman walked in with a baby bird. She then said "was there a nest?" He replied "yes" and she said "well that's where it needs to go." She was doing this in the waiting room, in front of everyone and I was just appalled. I get it everyone has bad days but watching and experiencing this has turned me the wrong way. We just recently moved to OBX. Our 13 year old maltipoo Gracie wasn't feeling well and we called our local vet and they weren't taking anymore patients on a Saturday morning and told us to take her to BluePearl in Chesapeake. After arriving at Chesapeake they informed us they didn't have a dr there until noon and to go to their sister location in Va Beach. We drove to Va Beach with Gracie throwing up and panting every breathe wondering if she was gonna make it! We seen a tech in the parking lot and she directed us to the side door where two employees were waiting. They took Gracie and kept us informed the entire time. Dr Voglewede was very caring, very professional and very educated! Unfortunately Gracie had a stroke that morning due to a tumor on her brain from the cushions disease. We had to make the hardest decision of our life to put Gracie down. Dr Voglewede let us come in and spend time with Gracie. She explained in detail what was going to happen and what to expect. It was a very sad day but I felt confident that we did the right thing! BluePearl Veterinary made us feel at home from start to finish! It also felt good to have a veterinarian that was so educated and one that we felt we could trust! We had Gracie cremated and just went and picked up her remains. Another very sad day!! Gracie was like a daughter to us and will be missed!! I can only hope she is running free with no pain read more

I was going through a very traumatic experience when my cat essentially was dying in my arms due to pancreatitis which lead to septic abdomen. I understand that the vet wanted me to have realistic expectations about the possible cost if i proceeded with surgery, but I felt like every conversation with that particular vet was about money. Money, money, money! They did a "FAST" ultrasound, then another one was done by an internal specialist. I was peeved about the additional cost because the first ultrasound was to diagnosis that something is wrong, then they had to go back in and find the issue. I thought this was wasteful. I opted to go home while they worked on my late cat. I received updates on her prognosis which I found comforting, but that was a $120 phone call/consult once I looked at the itemized bill. The only positive thing I can say is it's 24h care and they offer military discounts. But only come here if it's absolutely necessary and have your checkbook ready. I'm writing this about a month after my cat passed, so I'm not bitter or upset. I'm just disappointed in highway robbery. read more

NOT REGISTERED ONCOLOGISTS!! I'll keep this short. My dog has cancer. He needs chemo once a week. I got a call a day before his appointment to reschedule for two days later. I asked if should just take him to the other Blue Pearl in the area. I was told no because two days will not make a difference and the doctor likes to keep his patients. While I did not like that answer, I trusted them. THEN the day before my dog's now rescheduled appoint, I get another call saying they need to reschedule AGAIN because the doctor is sick. And the other Blue Pearl's doctor is on vacation... Their response was "I'm sorry" If you care for your pet, stay away from Blue Pearl. So we found another vet that got our dog in immediately. I wont provide a name because I don't want it to be seen as a paid review. The place was in Richmond, just to demonstrate how far we were willing to go to get our dog taken care. The ACTUAL oncologist at this new vet told us that Dr. Renaldi at Blue Pearl is NOT a registered oncologist. He simply has the ability to provide general chemo. Come to find out that Blue Pearl had not been treating our dog for his specific type of lymphoma and had been ignoring large masses on his chest.
