Wow, Wow, Wow. For the last 3 months, I have dined here at least 7 times with family and friends all very happy and leaving with full bellies of nice quality foods. Having experienced both the lunch specials along with the rolls and even dinner entrees, you truly can't go wrong with someplace like Blufish. The lunch special is for sure a standout served Monday - Friday with items being around 20 bucks after tax. In my opinion, great deal!! Not only do you get the main, but you also get a spicy tuna roll, fried rice, sweet and sour chicken with soup or salad. Everything is pretty good on the lunch with my only critique that the entree meat is on the smaller side. It is though made up by the quantity of items served with. My only other ask is if we can get the recipe for the dressing?! From all the Japanese restaurants we have tried in the Chicagoland area, their dressing is by far a favorite of ours. We have tried a few of the rolls but they are just okay. Not one has completely stood out to us, but it is possible we just aren't ordering good ones. Dragons were nice but the mozzarella one was a little off putting as the cheese wasn't melted. As for the best quality item to get here is always the sashimi lunch / dinner. The raw fish always tastes super fresh and for a good price you get so many pieces. I do wish sometimes I knew what I was eating :) BluFish is located in strip mall with ample parking and outdoor seating. Generally, services has always been good for the served, but the bartender is a huge standout. My only negative experience would be from the host who was quite off putting on a Saturday afternoon. There are more positive ways to greet guests and she did not do that. The restaurant was also empty at that time and I don't think having a small quiet puppy in its carrier is an issue... We had to make one of our "the coast is clear" family dinners a dine in Blufish night! We've been enjoying carry out for two years and really enjoyed experiencing the terrific service, ambiance, and of course, the food again. While we were waiting for our table, it was nice to watch some of the NCAA hoops action at the bar. Our Wakame salad and miso soup apps came out quickly and the main courses of assorted makis and the salmon entree was enjoyed by all. We went in because the other sushi restaurant that we go to got rid of most of our favorites and decided to give this place another try. When i say another, I don't want you to think i had a bad experience but because we were so used to going to other sushi spot. Anyway, coming back here made me forget why I stopped coming in the first place. The food was great and so was the ambiance. I definable would say it's a cute place for a date but i can also say it gets a bit loud in there so if youre looking for something quiet, I wouldn't recommend. We ordered the rainbow sushi (unfortunately forgot to take a pic), Jalapeño poppers and King Kong. We also ordered a virgin mojito but i think the price was a bit steep ($8) compared to other places. Been here more times than a dozen times and highly recommend you stop by when you're craving some sushi! Highly recommend making a reservation especially for dinner on weekends because they get very busy very quickly. This restaurant can even busy during lunch hours during the week day because they have some of the best lunch specials in town! My go to is either the chirashi (one of the best in chicago) or salmon bento with spicy tuna roll - even my kids love the bento! The fish is always extremely fresh and you really get a thick cut of fish. If you have young kids that don't like sushi - I highly recommend getting them the Udon. My kids absolutely love this noodle dish and it comes with battered and fried veggies and shrimp. The service is always quick and friendly no matter the time of day. They have never given me a hard time even when my twins make a mess (I always try to clean up after them) but the waiters/waitress are always so helpful and willing to help! I've never had a bad experience here and I'm sure we'll be back again next week. My family absolutely loves this restaurant and it never disappoints. We came for an early Saturday night dinner and were seated immediately. The tables are well and comfortably spaced. Our happy and enthusiastic server came right over and we knew we were in good hands. After placing our order, we started looking around. It is nearly impossible to describe what was going on behind us. The sushi bar was swarming with chefs preparing takeout orders. There were at least seven dedicated sushi chefs and, on the other side of the glass, was a brilliantly organized cadre of staffers. They were preparing and packing "to go" orders. We counted 23 bagged "to go" orders ready for pickup. Throughout the meal, a continuous stream of large bags of takeout orders kept appearing. It was terrific to see what a fantastically thriving business BluFish has! Back to our food-Everything was fresh, properly hot or cold, crispy, not greasy, flavorful, beautifully presented, and delicious! I love shrimp shumai dumplings. They have become a hit or miss choice. BluFish's shumai was succulent, sweet, and oh-so yummy! I was a little concerned about the accompanying citrus sauce sauce, scallion, tagarashi. Honestly, I have no clue what tagarashi is but it contributed to a slightly salty, slightly tangy dipping sauce. We got the combination tempura which consisted of shrimp, chicken, calamari, and vegetables. Shrimp was delicious, the chicken fine, and the calamari peculiar. The calamari was a long strip that looked like string cheese but had the consistency of calamari. It wasn't bad or unpleasant, just unusual. Vegetables fresh and full of flavor. They were hot, crunchy, and not greasy. Hooray!! We ordered a variety of Niguri: Toro, Blue Fin Tuna, Albacore Tuna, and half a dozen other kinds. Oh my word!!! The three tunas were melt-in-your-mouth heavenly morsels! Fresh! Buttery! Yummy!! After dining here, we would have no hesitation placing an order to go. BluFish Sushi is a well oiled machine and they are masterful. Their customers are the winners. Bluefish Sushi is a Destiination Restaurant. They were incredibly busy but the diners were not short changed by the hectic and incredibly busy takeout orders. I've ordered the seared tuna bento box for lunch from here twice now in the last couple months and both times it's been very good. The most recent time I dined in and they were very busy so it took a while for a waiter to take our orders. I got a miso soup with the box which was good. My friend said the crispy rice spicy tuna is phenomical. This is actually her favorite restaurant because of this dish. I am vegan so I wasn't able to try it, but it looks so good! They even put little lemon pieces in between? Very well presented. I heard the beef tataki was dry, but the sauce was apparently super good. Gyoza was solid. NY steak was amazing. Everything was super well presented. The reason for me why I am giving this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 is that I was really underwhelmed with my own dish, the sweet potato rolls. The fried sweet potato itself was amazing, with the crunchy tempura and sweet potato. However, the ratio of rice to sweet potato was a little much. There was so much rice for so little sweet potato, so I would have probably liked it with a little less rice, and a little more sweet potato. Then I'm sure it would be a 5 star roll. Overall, wonderful restaurant, beautiful presentation and good service. I will probably come back sometime with my crispy rice fried tuna loving friend. 1 year later from previous review, pandemic edition. Last night we took out from BluFish and when we pulled up to get our food we noted a patio filled with flames. Yes, enough propane heaters to warm most of Plaza del Prado. We had been aware that throughout the pandemic they were keeping an outside dining area well heated but kudos to them for keeping this up as we enter Chicago's deep freeze! It seems that they don't employ true sushi chefs to handle the cuts that need more precision. I had the Yellowtail Ponzu which I couldn't even finish because the cuts were so thick that I nearly gagged trying to eat the whole piece. Ordered takeout from here and was not disappointed. Came here at about 7 pm on a Sunday night and it was busy with a short line outside. The outside patio looked really nice and would love to come back to dine outside. They have online ordering which is what we did. We got the blue Alaskan maki which at $23 (long roll) is a little pricey, but it did have REAL king crab with cucumber and avocado in the middle and real snow crab mixed with spicy mayo on top. The best here though, is the lunch specials. Skip to the Bento mono. I don't eat fish very often so I usually go for the salmon or tuna, in addition you get a Spicy tuna roll, fried rice, miso, salad, and I believe sweet and sour chicken. ITS A TON OF FOOD. The food was fresh and well-plated. I recommend the Sexy Lady roll (cue Gangnam Style- which is Korean- I'm aware) as well as their lychee drinks (they have mojitos and martinis). We shared a tuna avocado appetizer salad and I will definitely return just for that! It was perfectly crunchy with chunks of avocado and fresh slices of fish. I was not a big fan of their spicy mayo (it had a strange texture) and not the usual spiced-up sriracha-mayo I've had at other Japanese restaurants. Service: Could have been better. We came on a Sunday so it wasn't that packed. They led me to tiny table right by the door that had dried sauce on it. The table clearly needed to be cleaned more thoroughly.
