I have heard about BluFish Sushi for a long time, but we had another go-to Japanese restaurant in Northbrook that my beloved late mother loved, and we used to go there with her every weekend for more than 15 years before the pandemic, so going to another restaurant with a similar menu did not interest me. However, since fellow Yelp Elite friend Howard L. recommended BluFish to me, I had mentally put it on my to-try list for a while. Recently, both my husband and I decided to give it a try, and it did live up to the hype! Although the restaurant looked smaller in real life, it was chic and modern looking. We made a reservation for 2 on the same day on a Wednesday, a couple of popular time slots had been filled. When we went at 6:00 pm, the restaurant was bustling. We were promptly led to a 2-person table in the open dining room. My seat had the nice view of the sushi-making station, which was super busy. There was an area with all high-back booths, which seated 4 each. Our area was quite loud, fortunately, my husband and I could still hear each other. Our server, Kassie, was very pleasant, sweet, knowledgeable, and attentive. She truly contributed a lot to a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience. For appetizer, I was going to order Crab Cakes, but changed my mind after learning that even with the wasabi sauce put on the side, the crab cakes would still be spicy hot. I ordered an order of Takoyai ($9)(six pieces) instead and shared that with my husband. It came out piping hot and was cooked just right, with a light and crispy skin and perfect texture. Just delicious! My husband ordered a Chilean Seabass entrée ($36) which had a generous portion. I was interested in getting some sushi rolls. You can pick long or short. Kassie answered my question that long was about 8 to 10 pieces, while short being 5 to 6 pieces. I ordered one long and one short to get some more variety, understanding that it would be too much food for the two of us. I ordered the long Green Turtle ($18) -- one of my all-time favorites, and a short Smoky Bear ($14). Everything was delicious, even though my husband said that the seabass was slightly overcooked. The ratio of sushi rice to the other ingredients was perfect, and all of that were fresh, tasty and balanced well. I have recommended BluFish to my other family members and relatives. We will definitely be coming back. I would be happy to try more different sushi rolls from their extensive menu. read more

Came here for a work lunch and absolutely loved everything we ordered! The place is easy to find, well lit and very clean. It looks modern and inviting, and we sat in a comfy booth to the side. It filled up pretty quickly for lunchtime after we sat down. We tried the edamame appetizer as well as another appetizer that I can't remember, but both of them were absolutely delicious, and then I tried the sushi combination B, which they let me sub the roll for a rainbow dragon roll, which was very nice of them It was so delicious and fresh, the flavor combinations and fish quality for the price can't be beat. It's been a years since I reviewed BluFish. I really enjoy visiting. We had reservations and were seated immediately. For the first time, we sat outside. It was a beautiful day. The service was also fantastic. We were greeted right away with bottled water and an offer for drinks. One of us had wine, and the rest of us had soft drinks. The menu is quite extensive - ranging from Japanese standards to Sushi. There were four of us and we ordered a variety of Maki rolls and Nigiri. Everything was delicious. I went with the salmon bento which comes with fried rice, crab rangoon, and your choice of California or spicy tuna maki. It was all very delicious and I love how their make their California rolls here. Blufish has a trendy vibe and plays what sounds like club music, even during a workday lunch. Everyone from the hostesses, servers, and bussers were very friendly. Food came out fast, but it was a bit of a long wait to settle our bill. I can see this place is very popular, it was absolutely packed. It's not for us however. As the name would suggest, it's a sushi place, but the sushi wasn't right. The sashimi was too thick, the rice for the rolls didn't quite work. When we would ask the server to remove our plates that were essentially untouched, he never asked if there was anything wrong, and we didn't bother complaining. The tempura udon soup was perfect however, it's a standard to inspire to for the restaurant. We won't return to be honest. But objectively the ambiance is great, and the servers do try hard to ensure you have a good experience. They do seem understaffed and somewhat overwhelmed however. read more

It's now $17 instead of $11 for it, but the lunch menu is still very reasonable and has chicken, beef, and salmon bento options, along with salads of sushi. It had crisp textures from the wonton(?) strips and lettuce and is accompanied by a light ginger soy-like dressing (if I had to guess). Other notes: the ambience is upscale and trendy, with gold lights strung across the restaurant and comfortable atmosphere for dates, family gatherings, or business meals. Plenty of waitstaff floating about, though our waiter wasn't as accessible as expected. The Blufish martini has lychee flavors and is colored by blue curaçao. I'm a fan! They are so quick with the food prep - which was perfect for delivery! I got their spicy fresh scallop roll, yellowtail roll, and California sunset roll. These rolls are LARGE and are so filling! However, the yellowfin roll didn't taste great. On the other hand, the spicy fresh scallop roll was so good, but I didn't love the snow crab filling for the California sunset roll. I typically adore snow crab, so this was a let down. Since the highs were high for the spicy fresh scallop roll, but the lows were pretty low, I had to average out this rating to 3 stars. read more

I asked what the vegan options were and because I didn't want to have any maki, I decided to try the spicy tofu steak. I was told that the sauce was not vegan but still ordered the dish. When it finally arrived, I was disappointed that there was no sauce of any kind on it at all. It was extremely plain. I think I've found my go to sushi spot in the suburbs! We came here on a busy Friday night and ended up sitting at the bar. Seating wise I would highly recommend getting reservations. Our bartender was great constantly checking on us and refilling our waters. Drinks wise my husband and I both go the bluefish martini. I think is get something else next time. My husband started with the uni shooter and he loved it. It was a pretty big shooter and he was super impressed. I started with the o toro and fatty yellow fish sashimi. Super big fish pieces and so so buttery. We shared the spicy deluxe maki combo which came with spicy octopus, crazy dragon roll, and blazing hamachi roll. We also got the short golden ebi. Such a good lunch menu! I got the beef bento and I was stuffed! It came with a bunch of meat, laid on top of plenty of grilled veggies, miso soup, a good amount of rice, 4 pieces of spicy tuna sushi with ginger and wasabi, and 2 crab rangoons with a sweet and sour sauce. The restaurant was beautiful, clean & busy on a Labor Day holiday early evening. Hostess was professional and we were seated right away. We had a great table, we could see a really stunning bar area from our table that had tennis & football games on, which we appreciated! Our waiter was really professional, clean cut, great hair cut and fast. The same goes for the staff where our water glasses and cocktails were refilled without having to wave anyone down! Nabeyaki udon for example, see my pic, is a fantastic soup choice that really can be shared if you wish, and still leave you with enough broth leftover to take home and make an entire other soup! Kudos to the service staff here, upon arrival, we were shown a table which was fine, but after being seated, I picked up immediately that there was an intense conversation at the neighboring table. I politely informed the host, asked if there was seating availability elsewhere, that we wished to move; and move us they did to an even better spot. So BIG thank you BluFish for accommodating us. True story, when we stood up to leave after dinner, it was later, I could see across the room that the intense convo table was still in play, so I was even more grateful. Also shout out to the bar here. When you are at it or walk by it, pay attention to what they have going on there, it's like a candy shop, they have everything. And the bar is not just about looks either. My favorite current jam that I recommend? They have a drink currently listed on the menu called "Local Punk" that features mescal. I recommend thar you avoid this restaurant and go somewhere else. We were coming here since they opened in 2009 bur won't be com8ng back unless they fire this incompetent general manager, Chris Kim, We couldn't even get a glass of wine because this incompetent manager refuses to restock the bar for weeks. Several employees advised us of this fact. They told us that this guy does nothing but sit in his office all day and doesn't come out. When we asked to talk to him he made us wait 20 minutes and then told us it wasn't his problem and couldn't care less that we are regular customers who come at least once a week or more for 17 years. The spicy tuna roll was absolutely packed with tuna with just the right amount of spice. The dragon roll was completely surrounded by eel. The edamame was still warm when it was delivered to my home. I have eaten in the restaurant before, but on the weekends and evening it does get pretty busy. But even when they are busy the carry out is definitely dependable and ready for pickup pretty quickly. The dressing was too plain so dish had a somewhat unpleasant taste. Was better after I added soy sauce but should not have had to. Their Veggie Tempura was good with a light breading. I've been a loyal customer at Blufish for years, spending no less than $150-$200 every visit because I genuinely enjoyed the food, especially the sushi rolls, and my 6-year-old daughter loves the chicken fried rice. But after my experience today, I will never go back. When we walked in, the front desk staff looked at me and my daughter as if we didn't belong there--like they were judging us based on how we were dressed. It was an uncomfortable and humiliating feeling. Despite seeing at least four empty tables, they told us they couldn't seat us because all tables were taken. I couldn't believe how dismissive and unwelcoming they were, especially considering how much money I've spent here over the years. It's disappointing to see a place I once loved treat customers like this. I'm taking my business elsewhere, where they actually value loyal patrons and don't make snap judgments. read more

Great sushi restaurant located in Plaza Del Prado. I've been coming here for years and it is consistently good. The menu has lots of different sushi options as well as many cooked entrees. I always like to get the bento box so I get a combination of sushi, salmon, and sides. The fried rice is very good. Trying to spice up Lent for my husband, I made a reservation here on a Friday night. We waited a few minutes for our table to open and were then shown to a booth. The ambiance is warm and chic. It was quite loud when we were there but I also believe every table was occupied and there were people waiting to be seated. I had the yellowtail and scallion maki and the asparagus maki. The yellowtail and scallion was excellent; the asparagus was a little bland (which is to be expected based on ingredients). We also shared the yuzu miso Brussels sprouts, which were roasted well and very flavorful. My husband had a few sashimi and several maki. I didn't sample any of his because they all contained things I'm allergic to but they looked delicious and were beautifully presented. Our service started out strong but definitely took a nosedive - it took a long time to get our check and then someone else came over to take the credit card after we'd been waiting awhile.
