Stefan was very personable, he encouraged me to try the homemade hot sauce with my meal and simply said "try this, trust me". The homemade hot sauce and ketchup really complimented the dish as well. The owner walked around and talked with myself and other guests and he also helped buss my table. Very admirable to see owners be present and get down and dirty with the staff. The coffee was good and the server kept the coffee and 1/2 and 1/2 coming. We both ordered the Smoked Salmon Eggs Bennie for $27 a plate. It took over an hour to get our food. Other folks got their food way more quickly. We are not sure what was up with our food and why it took over an hr for it to come out. We also did not have silverware and had to request it when the food came. For the prices of this place they need to get it together. This place is $$$ spendy for brunch. $27.00 for eggs Bennie and they were pretty stingy with the hollandaise sauce. It was nothing spectacular. The eggs Bennie were decent and the potatoes were tasty. They took 25% off of our meals for our wait and gave us free coffee. As a former server, there is no way I would I make chill diners who did not complain or get mad pay for 75% of their meals after they waited over an hour for their food. This experience does not make me want to come back.

We had no idea there was an actual J-Dub membership awaiting! We planned to buy a t-shirt or hat on our way out to commemorate our finding but then the real fun began! When my husband told the guy helping us (manager maybe, if not he should be!) the reason we came in, his eyes lit up and he asked with a confident nod "You a J-Dub?" ... and then honored him with THE one and only J-Dub family membership. Sadly, the owner wasn't in for a JD brotherly send off, but we'll definitely be back when we're in the area. Fellow J-Dubs unite and give this place some love. Even if you're not, it's still a fun place to visit. The hazel nut coffee is a must try!

Bad news. Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

It was especially frustrating seeing so many empty tables while waiting. Once we were seated, the servers were also pretty slow and seemed a bit overwhelmed. We had to wait longer than expected for basic things, which made the whole brunch feel unnecessarily drawn out. Hopefully they can improve the seating and service process, because the place has potential. For now, though, I'd probably look elsewhere for a more efficient brunch experience.
