I like this space, and the music (Meredith Axelrod) was great. Good wine and beer selection, with good service. The food was mixed, a good cheese plate. My wife and I frequent this establishment. There are many things to love about it... 1. Wine list is fantastic and changes often. 2. Food menu is simple with a mixture of french and american dishes. The range of sizes is excellent. I do, however, wish they would add some Gluten-Free options such as GF crackers with the cheese, etc. 3. Ambiance is very casual and enjoyable. The crowd varies depending on the day and the local events. 4. Service is great with extremely friendly staff who are both helpful and knowledgeable about the wines they are serving. 5. Price point is reasonable and the specials are nice. Points for improvement as mentioned above include additional GF foods and more involvement in the local community activities. What a fun find. This place offers happy hour specials every day for 1/2 off glasses of wine ($5-6 for a generous pour of wine, me-thinks "yes!"). We haven't tried any of their food, but will be trying their charcuterie or cheese plate at some point. The couple next to us ordered the cheese plate, which looked delicious and offered a generous portion of cheese/bread/spreads (not the typical miniscule portion of cheese I've come to expect when ordering one out at most wine bars in the city). Perhaps my favorite bar in the Castro. It has the feeling of a pub, in that you can sit back on a plush couch or chair, and actually talk to people. The staff is friendly, the ambiance is warm (with frequently changing art by local artists), and the wine selection is fantastic. This is a low key place, where you can sit back, have an appetizer before heading off to dinner, or return later in the evening for some desert and a port (or really anything on the wine list). On a warm day the front windows open up, on a cold day... well, they are closed... no fire place though (but one would not be out of place). In the back is a fantastic long table, which when things are crowded (which is rare, but on occasion happens), you will find intermingling groups of patrons, often times sharing bottles of wine with one another (or really, maybe that is just our group festooning our wine onto people... same thing, really... right?). read more

Blush is quite possibly one of my most favorite places in the Castro. It's classy, fun, well staffed, and just about perfect. Their wine selection is varied and unique, plus it's updated by season. Nearly anyone will be able to find a wine here that will satisfy them. The food and snack items are also perfect accompaniments to the wines. Especially nice are the meat and cheese platters. They're a perfect amount for 2-4 people to graze on while sipping away on delicious local and abroad wines. The staff is spot-on. They're extremely well informed, and can explain or describe every bottle on the menu. They are all attentive, friendly, mildly flirtatious, and overall eager to assist you in your wine selection. They're more than willing to offer suggestions, or attempt to tailor your drink purchase to your palette and preferences. Interestingly, for a wine bar, the place is very much not pretentious. It's decor is casual, and inviting. The seating isn't fancy, but nonetheless welcomes you to sit and stay a while with a group of friends. Sometimes light, unobtrusive music is playing. The place never reaches a volume level where normal conversation can't be had. If I had to knock Blush, it'd be the cost. Many of their wines are international, and thereby carry an international price. The snacks are also a little more pricey than one would expect. Still, it's a bar, so what do you expect? Plus, the atmosphere and service well out-shadow any negative feelings about price. Truly, one of the best places in the Castro for friends and drinks. read more

I met a friend here for a friend-date and it was the perfect little spot to catch up with her. We sat at the bar and watched the transition from slow to very busy (7:30pm -9:30pm on a week-night). The wine selections were good. I was in the mood for an Oregon Pinot Nior though, and I was a little bummed that they didn't have one. The bartender was friendly and engaging with all the patrons, and she was very knowledgeable of the wines and was able to help me select a wine for my mood. This place is adorable and I'll come back but both times I've been, the service has been very slow. Last time, we had to wait almost 40 minutes after we finished for the check. We weren't in a rush but it was hard to get the server's attention and I was getting sleepy. They have comfy couches that may have also added to my fatigue. The first time I went with a group and one friend arrived later. The server did notice and come over right away to take her order...he just never came back with her wine! Eventually we flagged him down and immediately he felt bad. We were cool though. He had to come back again to remember what she ordered. When he finally brought it out, he told her it was on the house. We weren't expecting that, but nice! So slow service, but good service. They have a decent selection of wines, and their house red (which comes in a carafe amounting to about a glass and a half), is a yummy tempranillo instead of the typical blah cab or merlot. Really excited about discovering this little ditty! Met some friends here the other night for a drink and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is classy and cozy at the same time. The walls have interesting and conversational art and the ambiance is cool. We only came for drinks but, I am eager to come back to try what looks like some reasonably priced yummy foods. I wasn't a fan of the sangria (thought it was a bit too sweet) but several others where enjoying it but I was happy with my wine just the same. The bartender was patient and quick to respond when I did make up my mind. We had a large group but managed to all fit in the area near the front door. It was dangerous sitting on that couch though. I went here for their brunch (which is exclusively waffles). I had the Three Cheese Waffle Tartine that has a fried egg and choice of ham, bacon, or caramelized onions (I chose bacon). It was excellent: a combination of savory and sweet (with the added maple syrup), crunchy and gooey. The French-pressed coffee was also very good. My caveats are that the service was a tad slow and that they open too late. (I'd prefer they opened at 9 or at least 10am.) Because of that, I probably won't go there too regularly, although I might like to, because I'm just too hungry by 11 (plus, by the time you order and get served, it's more like 11:30). read more

This is a place I go to a lot even though it's not my favorite wine. The vibe is chill, it's next to lots of other spots I like, and the happy hour drink deal is good... But I've also had a number of wines by the glass here that I don't adore here. Some are quite sweet? Others quite plastic? Hard to pin... But there are some interesting things like a pink pinot gris and a sparkling red that are fun to try even if they aren't my fave. The staff are honest as you find your way through the wine list and can help you avoid things you wouldn't like. The tapenade and bruschetta and edamame hummus are all good but overpriced for the portions. Love the ambiance-- could hang here for hours. read more

We were planning on a nice glass of wine (which, thankfully, we got), some small plates, and maybe a dessert. We got our wine and small plate and all was good, minus the fact that we could not get the attention of the bartender or waiter, who were much more attuned to the cute boys than to us. Enter an order for extra bread and a dessert. Watch the waiter give both of these to the next table. Try to get someone, anyone's attention. Wait some more. Finally, go to the bar and tell the bartender that we need to leave post haste. Hold your tongue while the bartender offers to give you your dessert for free, even though you just told him that you have you have to leave NOW. Tip exactly 15%, then leave, sad because you didn't get your chocolate fondant but excited to see your movie. The end. read more

A friend of mine has taken me to Blush twice now and both times it turned out to be nights with receptions for artists opening shows of their art on the walls of Blush. Despite it being a cozy, casual place, those particular nights were very high energy mixing regulars with artists and art admirers. I had a fabulous time. met alot of new people, and found everyone very friendly. Love the comfy couches and chairs. They have a pretty good list of wines and reasonable prices. If i lived in SF i would probably frequent this place.... Sidenote: There was a naked guy standing on the street with his underwear in his hand. I took my best friend here after a tan we got at Tan Bella , we wanted to some girl time to chat and sip some wine/champagne w| little snacks. my best friend had never been in the Castro - me , i have had MANY fun full nights there. Ironically this wine bar has the best Belgian beer in the Castro. They also have great snack plates to nibble on as you sip and chat. It's a great date place; lively yet quieter than the surrounding bars. The staff are also friendly. When I arrived at the place, they told me they would be closing in 15 minutes for a private event. I have work in customer service/dining/bar for a long time. It is common courtesy to return all calls even if you cannot accommodate the party. They could have at least let me know so I could have made other arrangements. It was my birthday so it was pretty frustrating to have to scramble to find another place. I gave an additional star, because the place looked really cool and the server was prompt. I would have to say that I liked when it was Au Bon Port. But seasons change. I enjoyed getting a really juicy red wine here and sinking into the velvet of the couches, contemplating the abstract artworks on the walls. Once I was there and they had a 3-piece string band that was kind of jazzy-funky-classic. Is there such a genre? Hmmm. I remember ordering a dessert there that was mind blowing, I think it was a dessert crepe or tiramisu or something. Final opinion, any wine bar is a good thing. They have a little something for every palette by the glass or buy a bottle, still or bubbly. Easy to find right across the street from the Castro Theatre. read more
