When I find myself sauntering on Hayes with nary a care in the world, reality often strikes and sends me to the edge of desperation. My optimism dissipates, and my feelings get shoved onto a downhill cable car with a broken gearshift. That means just one thing: I need an Espresso Martini. This is where this spacious bar came in handy. I've passed by it and noticed its popularity as an afterwork watering hole for the young and vapid in Hayes Valley. That's quite understandable because of the huge patio. I remember when I used to gorge on mushroom burgers here when it was Flipper's. But now the $14 Espresso Martini does the trick for me (Photo 5). I feel better now. After ordering cocktails, I sat down briefly to check my bus route so I could plan my trip home. The bartender, a white man with long blonde hair wearing a button-down shirt, looked at me and, in a distinctly passive-aggressive tone, said, "Is that a thing people your generation do? Do they not sit and talk to people anymore?" The comment was unsolicited and frankly rude. He then proceeded to say that he'd been noticing "people like me" failing to strike conversation with him which made him upset. What made the situation more concerning was that I then observed him tell another customer to leave simply for speaking to a friend on the phone. It began to feel less like a one-off comment and more like a pattern of targeted behavior. Notably, the individuals he seemed to take issue with, including myself, were people of color, which raises serious concerns about bias in how customers are being treated. My friend and I will not be returning here. Do better. read more

The Vernal Pools had a nice combination of flavors with the tequila, apple, ginger and chili coming together nicely, although the drink didn't have as much of a heat kick as we were expecting. There are two areas to Anina - an outside deck that is heated but closes around 21:00, and the overly cramped but cool vibes indoor where the bar is situated. We started our night outside before moving in and were able to snag a table for our midsize group. Anina serves up some massive punch bowls, which back in LA, we used to call em scorpion bowls cause they pack a punch if you aren't careful. We ended up ordering two - not at the same time, but definitely could've reconsidered given how strong the first one was. Lots of fun, drinks, and good times when you're in good company.
