I was visiting town for work and was in the mood for Chinese! Bo Lings looked like a very nice and clean restaurant, but I placed an order for carry out. The staff were friendly, greeting me at the door and directing me to the carry out desk. My drink was forgotten with my order. (I wasn't paying attention and forgot to mention it as well) Their shrimp was huge and was juicy & fresh, AMAZING! I wanted to try the BBQ Pork buns which tasted good, but I could have done with a little more filling and less dough. I am picky with my crab rangoon as well this was almost spot on, but had quite a bit too much of cream cheese vs crab. When I'm back in town I really want to try the dumplings! To top it off, the prices were fair and worth it in my opinion. Overall, I had to be picky to critique this restaurant and excited for my next work trip to be able to eat here again. read more

I remember 30 years ago when Bo Ling's was synonymous with quality. They still have the prices to match, but the food is terrible now. My sister just moved to town and she and her husband are trying out new restaurants every week. Her husband picked Bo Ling's for the second time and I backed up his choice as they're known as one of the better Chinese restaurants in town. My sister ordered Beef Chow Fun, my brother-in-law ordered Dan Dan Noodles with Tofu, I ordered Egg Drop Soup, Crab Rangoon and Chicken Lettuce Wraps, and we ordered Honey Walnut Chicken for the picky eater who doesn't like vegetables or spicy food. With such a small menu compared to other Chinese restaurants, you expect everything to be done well. I was really happy that they offer chicken for the walnut dish since most places serve it with shrimp only. The soup, crab Rangoon and lettuce wraps were all fine. Not the best I've had. The Rangoon is loaded with cream cheese. The lettuce was limp because it steamed in the bag, so I tried to crisp it up at home. Oh, we also ordered dumplings and that was the best thing on the table by far. The Honey Walnut Chicken had a good flavor to the sauce, but the battered chicken was overcooked. It was dry and stringy inside the breading. Edible, but not good. And that's where the decent ends. My brother tried his dish first and immediately made a face and said the rice noodles were complete mush. My sister tried her noodles next and they were also overcooked mush. They said it had no flavor. My brother tried his wife's dish and couldn't even tell the meat was beef; it was flavorless. They picked out a few bites and that's it. The rest of it went in the trash. $40 down the drain. My sister made him promise they'd never go back to Bo Ling's. So this restaurant has been permanently scratched off the list, and I have to agree. If you have to eat there, stick with the appetizers. Everything else ranged from bad to inedible. One star for dumplings and one star for...I don't know, nostalgia? read more

Today we ate at Bo Lings again. I'm happy to say we had an excellent experience. The hostess and server were very friendly! Our order was correct, and served with a smile. My husband had the "wonder" soup and raved about it. We had dumplings, with peanut sauce added! It was very reminiscent of a dish we used to eat at our favorite restaurant in Fremont, CA. We've been chasing this dish for 30 years, and were thrilled to have it here! Our last experience was a mishap, but today more than made up for it! read more

The food was good! Everyone but me finished their food, but I eat tiny portions anyway. One thing I did NOT care for was that the broccoli in my stir fry seemed only barely cooked. I didn't find it pleasant, and raw broccoli is tough for me to digest. Unfortunately, on this occasion, our server was extremely absent minded, with us needing to ask for things multiple times. She said she was doing two jobs that night and perhaps that's so but there were very few people in the restaurant, it was not a busy night.... We just tried Bo Lings for the third time since moving here last August. The first two times, I didn't like what I ordered, but my husband did. This third time everything we ordered was horrible. We had the dan dan noodles, beef chow fun and crab rangoon. Both of the noodle dishes were terribly overcooked, mushy and had no flavor. The crab rangoon shell tasted stale and the inside tasted like a block of bland cream cheese. Thank goodness we never have to go back here again, what a waste. read more

Went to the Quivira location today. I haven't been there in a couple of years, and I love their food. I must say, today was the first time in 20+ years where I could hardly eat the food. Their pot stickers were good as usual, but their Generals Chicken was not good at all. I feel like the recipe has changed or the chicken is different. It was very pliable, not tender or moist at all. Also it seemed like it was very breaded and fried, almost like an Orange Chicken or something, and the taste was way off. Does anyone know if they have changed the recipe for the Generals Chicken? If so, I hate to say it, but I won't be going back. On a side note - the place was clean, service was great, pot stickers were great, my wife got the egg roles and she thought they were really good. Large portions of food, at very good price. Bbq pork fried rice had tons of tender pork chunks with a light bbq flavor. Sweet and sour chicken was nicely battered that was just the right amount of balance. The crab rangoon was more cream cheese than anything. Didn't taste or see much crab meat. The service was fast, the waitress only checked on us once which was fine. Will say the restaurant didn't have any air on or was on really low as I grow hot as we set there. We've tried this Bo Lings twice since April. The first time we ordered orange chicken with spring rolls and crab Rangoon. The chicken was lacking in sauce to the point it was barely wet and the rolls and Rangoon were so greasy it was hard to eat. Most likely they cooked them at too low a temp so they just soaked up the oil. We called and were put on their books for a credit so we could try again. This time the chicken had plenty of sauce but was probably the toughest chicken I've had in a while. It was white meat and overcooked so much that it was not enjoyable to eat. The spring rolls were flavorless. The interior was not seasoned. It's like they wrapped up raw cabbage and deep fried it. Not good. The staff that I interacted with was very nice. They sounded very professional over the phone and more so in person. They double checked that I had everything before letting me out the door. Perhaps the cooks in the kitchen just don't know what they are doing or maybe both times they were having an off day. Either way, I don't think I will be visiting again. read more

First time at Bo Lings since I'm from out of town. A quiet, pleasant environment. Nothing fancy, but comfortable. Good variety on menu. Hot and sour soup was pretty standard, but good. The fried calamari was exceptional. Unusual mix of flavors. Chicken lettuce wraps were tasty and the portions generous. Service was excellent: friendly, prompt, attentive. Prices were decent though not cheap. But I got good value for my dollars. I'd certainly eat here again if I'm back in this area. read more

Consistently wonderful food, comfortable atmosphere, and superior service are how I'd describe all Bo Lings locations. This one is no exception! We love this place! I have loved Bo Lings since I was a teenager when they opened at 91st and Metcalf. Living down south, I am grateful that they have a location closer to this area :-) The last time we were there, we walked in for dinner on a Sunday night, and were seated immediately. Our server was right there with water and we ordered tea. We split a couple familiar entries, and refilled the tea once for some good conversation. The experience never disappoints! read more

Full disclosure: I've been told my standard for Chinese food is high, growing up in the majority Asian suburbs of California. For a western/Americanized palate, Bo Lings is great. For anything slightly more authentic, it's a mixed bag. 5 stars for service; 2 stars for food. Szechuan-style green beans ($15): Not properly blistered but tasted good. Savory and with a nice crunch. I thought this actually tasted similar to what I've had elsewhere, but my friends thought it tasted different. Mapo tofu ($19): If it weren't so salty, this would be tasty. Not sure about authentic, but delicious anyway. Yang chow fried rice ($16): Sooooo salty. I love fried rice. I know it's not authentic, but I consider fried rice the mac and cheese equivalent of Chinese food. It was so salty I couldn't finish it, which made me sad. Siu mai ($5.50): Better than ABC Cafe. It's probably good for Kansas, mediocre for anywhere with an actual Chinese food scene. Also, the house Jasmine rice is $6. It's weird being charged for rice when it's such a staple with family-style dishes, but I've learned that my experience of free rice elsewhere has been the exception. read more

Highlights would be the egg rolls, orange chicken, General Tsos chicken, and cashew chicken. My only complaint is the prices, but everywhere is expensive anymore. Reviewing this from a purely dim sum perspective! Overall I think I just expected a bit higher quality dim sum for the price. I forgot to snap a pic but we ordered chicken feet, tripe, lai wong bao, har gow, shrimp rolls, pan fried dumplings, bok choy etc. We came during a really busy time, so our server was definitely busy but still super attentive! This place is huge and can definitely seat large parties. When it's packed, it's hustling and bustling with people but not too loud or anything. I THINK this is the only spot in the Overland Park/Olathe area that has dim sum, so I would recommend coming here for a quick fix! Just keep in mind that it's on the pricier side. read more

Lunch on a weekday. Service was very quick and friendly. Tried the Gong Bao Chicken. Served with choice of rice (brown, white or fried), crab Rangoon and egg drop soup. I skipped the soup because, well, egg but my friend loved hers. The wontons were great. My entree was wonderful - plenty of peanuts, chicken and green beans. The vegetables were perfectly crisp in a amazing sauce. The kids sweet and sour chicken was breaded and fried perfectly. You can taste the sauce is homemade. Blandness was overwhelming... The sichuan shrimp dumplings were flavorless right down to the sauce it was served in. The chicken wonton soup and chicken general Taos was just as bland. I could have had the same dish for the same taste at any Chinese restaurant at any strip mall in two Kansas cities. I ordered the cashew chicken and it was just okay. It was nothing to rant and rave about. I would have ordered an appetizer but this is a pricey place! The food was good, not great. The service was fabulous but not unique. The venue was gorgeous and access was easy. Bo Lings is located in a busy strip mall and parking is at a premium. Getting a parking space can be miraculous when they are busy. Like I said, this is a pricey place and I just did not see where my food was worth the price tag. I have had much better at no-name strip mall Chinese eateries. The crab rangoon and cashew chicken are some of my favorites anywhere in town. I took my daughter to this location just a couple of weeks ago. She had the the General Tso's chicken and loved it. I used to order carryout a lot when I worked out that way and it was always perfect. My only suggestion is maybe have fried rice as an option as opposed to brown or steamed when it is not lunch time. Just ok for me so don't get the crazy $$$. General Tso chicken itself was solid but not enough sauce to mix with the rice which was dry. No one wants to have to pour soy sauce all over their rice because the entree isn't saucy at all. My wife will return. Not me. read more
