Mediocre food for the price. Disappointed and won't re-order. Popularity doesn't translate to good food

I have eaten at this location for years and always stop when I'm in the area. I usually get the cashew chicken, egg drop soup, and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon and cashew chicken are some of my favorites anywhere in town. I took my daughter to this location just a couple of weeks ago. She had the the General Tso's chicken and loved it. I used to order carryout a lot when I worked out that way and it was always perfect. My only suggestion is maybe have fried rice as an option as opposed to brown or steamed when it is not lunch time. I love their fried rice and would love to have that, instead, when I go for dinner! read more

Just ok for me so don't get the crazy $$$. General Tso chicken itself was solid but not enough sauce to mix with the rice which was dry. No one wants to have to pour soy sauce all over their rice because the entree isn't saucy at all. My wife will return. Not me. read more

Hostess and server was attentive. Took our orders quick and explained that my pork dumplings would take 20 minutes. I had the chicken chow fun, hot and sour soup, and pork dumplings (pan fried). All of them were great. My five years old totally love the chow fun. I tried other bo lings locations but never this one; I am glad I did. Definitely will be back for more! read more

Food was ok (not fir the price). I had a 1/2 order of crabragoons, honey walnut shrimp, with the meals rice and Sake martini. Meal with tip was $40. Nothing exceptional just ok. Service was mediocre. Love this restaurant! We were driving around Leawood while hungry, looked up and saw their sign and said - this is it! And Bo Ling's IS it. Apparently there are two other locations, but I see no need to explore any further. We started with Spring rolls (massive, well constructed, delicious sauce) and fried eggplant (perfectly cooked, delicious sauce, generous portion) from the appetizer list. I chose cashew chicken from the lunch menu. I didn't know cashew chicken could be so tasty - a ginger sauce over chicken and vegetables that were perfectly cooked - nothing mushy, nothing crispy. I felt like I rediscovered a new food and am already sad I don't live in Kansas so will have to wait to try this again. Lunch was served with a crab Rangoon and a thick egg drop soup, both quite good. We ended up trying at least six sauces, all of which are made in-house. Only went for dim sum. Not a great experience. I went on a Friday ... big mistake. After I ordered five items ... long minutes after I ordered ... server came back and handed me the picture menu they use. About a third of the items were crossed out, meaning not available, including some I had ordered. (This is a mark-your-choices-on-the-menu place ... cart service is going extinct everywhere.) He said they stock up for the weekend trade. On weekdays, not so much. He could have told me what wasn't available when I ordered, right? Eventually I got my food, including substitutions. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great either. Just the kind of lackluster restaurant food you get used to in this part of the world. Oddly, the best thing I had was one of the more difficult-to-make items, woo gok (fuzzy-looking taro puffs filled with seasoned ground pork). The har gao (shrimp dumplings) stuck to the steamer basket and couldn't be removed without tearing them apart because they don't put them on a little round paper or lettuce leaf to prevent sticking, which is standard in the dim-sum world. Similarly, there were nice cloth napkins. But my menu stuck to the sticky table. Then the bill came. Including tax, $53. That's $63 with tip. Same meal (except top quality) in a top-grade Vancouver or San Francisco restaurant costs less. This was for five everyday dim-sum items and tea. Won't be back. read more

our favorite place to go when in town. food was alright, we came late so of course the food was a little old, but our server was so great it made up for everything! she was ready at all of our needs and very efficient. if anything i would rate the place a 4.5/5 because of the old food, but a 5 works too! overall pretty good experience and definitely recommend. read more

This was a full service restaurant with bar. We ordered from the lunch menu with each of us choosing a different entree and Jasmin Tea. Food was a cut above most Chinese establishments with all food items very flavorful and plenty to eat. My entree was a Chicken and Gulf Shrimp dish with Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon and Hot Sour Soup. The Gulf Shrimp were large and fully peeled except for a bit on the tail. The Hot Sour Soup had a thicker base, lots of Lotus Mushrooms, Tofu, Bean Sprouts, BBQ Pork, Onion. Loads of flavor! All meals for the 4 of us were exceptional. We did not leave hungry or wanting. The 2 women took doggie bags. Dessert was traditions fortune cookies. The total cost was a bit higher than we normally would find at $95 including a $16 tip but we thought the meal was worth the few extra dollars. read more

I wasn't totally impressed by the food quality here at Bo Lings. As an American-Born Chinese myself, I hold Chinese food to a different standard than most. Our experience here was good; our server was nice and super bubbly, but it almost felt forced. I'm used to the hardcore Asian waitress that basically screams at you, "WHAT YOU WANT TO DRINK. WHAT YOU WANT TO EAT," and the food coming out just like grandma's. We felt that this place was catered towards Americans (no offense). There weren't very many Asians in the eating area. If you want to find authentic and delicious ethnic food, you look for patrons that share the same ethnicity as the restaurant. We ordered combination lo mein, Beijing roasted duck with buns, beef & broccoli, and fried rice with chicken. The lo mein was delicious, with the exception that it was a little too salty. Roasted duck was decent, but it was very dry. You can only slop on so much hoisin sauce to make it moist before the flavor of duck disappears. Beef and broccoli was VERY saucy, and the fried rice was too oily. Bo Ling's is much better than Chinese takeout, but I'll probably be going to a more authentic Chinese restaurant like ABC Cafe in OP next time I get a hankerin' for Asian food. read more

Bo Lings is a great option for generic, local franchise Chinese food. I went to Bo Lings over lunch, so the business crowd was there. Nothing revs up my appetite like a bunch of dressed up, stressed out, unhappy people complaining around me. After waiting in line with grumbling corporate drones, we finally reached the motherland. They sat us at a table and I ordered the general Tso's chicken with an extra side of crab Rangoon. Unlike the plaza location, I was not disappointed with my meal. The chicken was crisp and gooey and the Rangoon was extra rangoony. The layout is like a generic Chinese restaurant (see picture) and the atmosphere is perfectly Asian. If you want Chinese food you can count on with no surprises, I recommend Bo Lings, just avoid going during lunch. read more

I had a business lunch with a colleague here today. The lunch menu is significantly smaller than the dinner menu, but offers diverse options. I usually order the Chicken and Shrimp Hunan Style, but today I opted for the Salmon Teriyaki. It was good, but the fish was a bit overcooked, leaving the surface a bit tough. The flavor, however, was DELICIOUS. Lunch specials come with egg drop soup, your choice of white/brown/friend rice, and crab rangoon. I opted for an up-charge to get an eggroll... which was TOTALLY worth it! read more

Bo Ling's is one of my favorite restaurants. I first dined here with my family for my sister's B-day. She loves Dim Sum and this was one place in KC where she could find it. I am not a huge fan of Dim Sum--, but she loves it so much I got her a gift card for Christmas. I love Bo Ling's for lunch. Their cashew chicken is so good. The cashews are large and the sauce is the perfect weight, it is not too heavy or sticky. The veggies always taste fresh and the egg drop soup is thick and served at the perfect temperature. Bo Ling's has the best crab ragoons too. Their lunch specials, with a soda will run you 12-15 bucks, which is pricier than your average buffet, but worth it because the food is better. Arrived an hour before close and were seated promptly. Ordered drinks and when server returned told us we needed to order because kitchen was closing. We asked what time kitchen closes and it was still a full 30 minutes before kitchen closed. Ordered. Food came out quickly. Food was good, not amazing but good enough. We had taken about 2 bites when server arrived with boxes. Clearly rushing our group. Someone who was not our server came over and swept under our table while we were eating. 10 minutes before closing time, with another table still in the building as well, we were told they would be "leaving in 10 minutes and no one will be left in the building". The rudest service I have received in a very long time. I am courteous and aware of closing times and I tip very well. I just won't ever patronize this business again. read more

I received an email from BoLings offering me a $10 bonus card for every $50 in gift cards I purchased. I purchased 3 cards for a total of $150.00 at 11:27AM on Christmas Eve MORNING. I then proceeded to place an order ONLINE at 11:30AM. After I spent the time to put my order together online, the site told me that online orders CANNOT ACCEPT gift cards. So I called the restaurant on 135st. I was told that I had to place an order via phone to use the gift cards - so that's what I did. I placed a $167.00 phone order for my food to be ready at 5:30PM (I placed the order at 11:30AM). I drove to the restaurant at 5:30 only to be told that they had no record of my order and couldn't find it. I waited in front of the restaurant for over 40 min while they looked for my order (which they never found). As I was sitting in my car waiting for a manager, I overheard a waitress telling the car next to me that they were going to have to wait an additional 90 minutes (on top of the 60 minuets they had already waited) for their food. This is when I started placing an online order for a very small Chinese take out restaurant near me (151/Metcalf across from CVS) and I left BoLings. By the time I drove to this other take out restaurant, not only was the food ready in 20 min; I got more food then I have ever gotten at BoLing's and it was also cheaper (by $40!!!)!! On the third time of asking for a manager I gave up. I started calling the restaurant to get answers. I was told that one would give me a call to figure things out. I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL. NO ONE was able to help me or offer me any food suggestions. Anyway, I called the restaurant on Sunday (3 days later) and requested I get my money back from the gift card purchase. It is Tuesday and I still don't have my money posted to my paypal account. I also, NEVER received the extra $30 in bonus cards the email add promised me. I WILL NEVER order or eat food here again. No apologies from anyone and I HAD TO CALL THEM to get a manager to listen to my issue (after I left my name and phone number w/ the waitress). Disappointed in the quality of the food that Bo Lings is putting out these days. Took my wife and son to the location on 135th street after a poor quality of food experience at the location near 87th and Metcalf. Again, the crab rangoon (6 for $10) was very bland and if there was crab in the mix I'd be very surprised. Tasted like pure cream cheese only and this mirrored the experience in the other location. My sweet and sour chicken ($15) was very bland. My son had the Singapore noodles ($18) which the menu says comes with chicken and pork but there was no pork to be found. We politely asked our waitress if recipes had changed on the crab rangoon or the noodles and she said no and apologized for the issues. She said she's pass the feedback on to her manager which made sense. There was no discount on the bill (which was not the intent or expected). In summary, for an $75 dinner bill with no cocktails/drinks, I'd expect a much higher quality of product and service. Now that we've experienced this in two locations, we're done with Bo Lings and suggest you look for other options. There definitely are other options that deliver much better (and care). read more

Food is just okay but our server Michelle was very curt and completely disinterested in providing good service. It's no wonder because the manager Raymond was a complete jerk as well.... after Michelle filled my to-go box to the brim (because I only ate 4 bites) I accidentally left it behind. Mind you I called as soon as I got home and realized it but was told by Raymond "we went through the "trouble" of boxing it up so no we're not replacing it" Really Raymond?! I spend over 40bux on Chinese plus I tipped her lousy behind another 20% just to be treated like I was an inconvenience, robbed and spit out!! We have been customers for many years and I would say that this was the worse visit there that we have had. The pasta in the Vietnamese spring rolls was hard. The fried spring rolls taste like vinegar. My husband loves them and now will never order these again. I will make my own from now on. Consider this an open letter to the owners of Bo Ling's. First, a little background. Our family has been eating at Bo Ling's for over 20 years. I'd venture that we've eaten at Bo Ling's restaurants a couple hundred times. We live out of the immediate Kansas City area but are in the city frequently. We've eaten at every location through the years except, for no particular reason, the Country Club Plaza location. We eat mostly at the Zona Rosa location, but I work south of KC during the week and will run up to the 135th & Metcalf location about once or twice a month. So . . . Dear Mr. & Mrs. Bo, What's going on? You used to be the go-to choice for quality Chinese in KC. Lately you've devolved into a group of restaurants that offers no better than the scores of little strip mall Chinese dives we see all over town, where the buffets offer limp Crab Rangoon and sticky General's Chicken, and most of the business is carry-out. Is that really what Bo Ling's aspires to be? This past Tuesday I ate dinner at your 135th & Metcalf location. I was in the restaurant between 6:30 and 7:30, what should be the prime dinner hour. A total of five tables, including mine, were occupied during that hour. Why is that? Metcalf and 135th Street were filled with traffic as usual. That location sits at one of the busiest intersections in Overland Park, and it's a bustling retail area. Where are Bo Ling's diners? We haven't waited for a table at any Bo Ling's location in probably five years. Years ago we expected a 15 to 20 minute wait whenever, and wherever, we stepped into a Bo Ling's. It's not the competition. It's Bo Ling's obvious neglect of its brand. Consistency of food and service is now inconsistent. You never know what you're going to get, either on your plates or for a server. The other night I could've stood a fork up in my Pad Thai. I know it's prepared with cornSTARCH, but c'mon. The dish had maybe five shrimp. I used to get at least double that number of large shrimp in the Pad Thai. A couple months ago my wife was eating with a friend at Zona Rosa. The waiter served the soup before anyone brought silverware. There was no spoon with the soup. When she asked for a soup spoon, the waiter brought a large serving spoon. Yes, he really did. When my wife asked for a soup spoon she was told, "Those are the only spoons we have. Everybody keeps stealing the spoons." Seriously? He was either too lazy to walk back into the kitchen and get the proper spoon, or he was making excuses for whomever was supposed to be washing silverware. Either reason is inexcusable. I probably should have never walked through the door the other night. "Why?" you ask. The exterior of the restaurant is atrocious. Bare dirt has replaced any shrubs or flowers that ever grew in the beds. Splotches of chewing gum dot the sidewalk in front of the entrance, and the carpets in the foyer haven't been vacuumed in a month. "Welcome to Bo Ling's!" We long for the old Bo Ling's. Just had my first BoLings curbside pickup due to the virus shutting down everything. Ordering my meal online at BoLings website. Once I set up my account - very easy to do...I started my order. They have made it so easy to order...I had to have Hot sour soup...BoLings is the best in KC in my opinion. Went on to Chicken Fried Rice - Yum They ask what you are driving - description. When I got there just called the number on the door to let them know I was there and it was just a few minutes and they brought it out. I have never been disappointed with BoLings! read more

Bo Lings.. what happened to you? I remember visiting back in the day, and thinking "Top notch!" - now I find myself extremely underwhelmed. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing? Maybe it was just busy that night and my food wasn't at the top of your list? I ordered to-go, some noodle dish, some dumplings, and soup. The soup was bland.. pretty bland. The dumplings were chewy and oily and.. sludgy.. the sauce to dip them in, had spilled, no wait - MELTED and spilled all over every. single. thing. in my to-go bag. Which is sad, it was ALL OVER the dumplings, and sadly, was a salty salty mess. So salty, it made the dumplings inedible. The noodle dish was about the same.. not as salty, thank goodness they survived the Dumpling Sauce Flood of 2016, but it was just oily, greasy, mushy mess. The veggies were mush, mush mush, the fish was chewy and tough, and the noodles were under cooked. So much disappointment. read more

It was a lot of food but wait... The chicken did not taste fresh... U know how the frozen chicken is kinda dried and stiff...and fried rice was tasteless too. So go on and check it out.
