I am hyper competitive and I should never have been introduced to this place. Now that I'm here they are stuck with me. This place is great! They have rentable board games at the low low rate of $2.00. They have a wide selection of great quality games (sadly no 'Saved by the Bell the game' but we can't get everything we want) no food is sold here but you can bring your own food or have it delivered right to your table. Wonderful service and a great location, with a pretty decent collection of beers on tap. The board game rental concept is so fun, and gives a nice alternative for the typically uninteresting DC happy hour. However, they lose a whole star by not having food to munch on. Haven for hipsters, hipster wannabees, and...drum roll...normal people just wanting to go out and have a fun low-key night in the District! I love that this type of place exists and offers a good clean way to have fun playing good ole fashioned board games beyond just the same old, same old bar scene and even potentially partake in something social, fun AND intellectually stimulating! There are a ton more game choices than I expected too. I just wish places like this existed closer to those of us who are out in the 'burbs. read more

We recently held a fundraiser at The Board Room and I cannot say enough great things about Rich, Beth, and the bar. They gave us the upstairs and were incredibly generous in helping us make sure that our event was a success. The crowd had a great time playing a Connect Four Tournament and life size Jenga. We had a ton of pizzas delivered and the happy hour specials were just right. It was the perfect atmosphere for our casual fundraiser. read more

I travel to Washington D.C. once a month on business and I have always wanted to check out this bar because I love to play games! My colleagues and I went last Friday night and we had such a good time we stayed for hours. The bouncer was very helpful and courteous - we really wanted to play "Cards Against Humanity" but is wasn't available. The bouncer was so nice that when someone turned in the game - He brought it over to us! The only downside to this bar was that there is no food...not even popcorn on the tables or at the bar. A great place to hangout and play board games with a bunch of friends. Weekends are super crowded so you should reserve a table in advance for your group. Yeah...I think I just found a new hang-out spot in the Dupont Circle area. I came here to met up with a friend of mines after deciding that I wanted to go somewhere out of the norm. Yes, this is a sports bar by classification; but the theme of Board Room is much more: takes you back to that time when you a small kid trying to beat all your friends in Uno, Sorry, and Trouble. Funny enough, Uno and Trouble were the two games that were played during our visit to BR. Each game that you get from the game stack at the front of the bar cost money to rent; Sorry and Trouble were $2/each. Drink wise, I copped The Clyde (Stolichnaya Orange Vodka, Cointreau, Hand-squeezed orange, club soda); my lady friend got Chardonnay white wine and we both enjoyed the drinks. Bartender was chill and told us that we could order food from specific restaurants within the area, so we went with Flippin' Pizza and got a 25% discount. We came here on the weekend but we got here early before the late night-rush, so I would get here early because it was packed around 10 pm. read more

The Board Room is a cool place to hang out and play games. We had fun there doing that playing Tonk, Scrabble, Clue, and Taboo. Certainly go have a fun time on your date or with your crew. But, don't expect anything else really after that. We needed the table bussed that we were planning to sit at. There was a spill on the floor by our table and the guy wiped it up with the rag and used the same rag on our table. They have a decent beer selection. But, if you love your handcrafted cocktails this is not the place for that. The specialty cocktail menu has nice selections and I was excited when I saw two of my favorites, which are the Aviation and French 75. However, this is not a lane the two gentleman bartenders that were there early evening yesterday should be in. If you desire a stiff drink then you're good. Personally, I like a balance of the ingredients in my cocktails, so I can taste the essence of them and this was not happening when I ordered both cocktails. Both bartenders worked on the Aviation (I tried to coach them) and I pushed through it. But, the French 75 (I shouldn't have ordered it after my first experience) tasted awful and I decided to return the cocktail and go to the safety of beer. The bartender became a bit perturbed with me when I returned the drink. Trust, I just came back from New Orleans where I had plenty of French 75s, so I know one when I taste one. They don't have a food menu, but they do allow for bringing in your own food or you can order from a few restaurants in the area. We got pizza from Flippin Pizza which was tasty. The perfect place for a night in without actually having to say "in." The Board Room has been a go-to for my friends and I for a few years and recently it's getting harder and harder to get a table. The Board Room keeps it simple. Grab a table (upstairs or down), grab a drink (there's 2 bars but the upstairs one is usually closed), and order some food if you're in the mood (they don't have a kitchen but allow outside food). Like I said, it get's busy but if you wait around a bit you can usually snatch a table. This isn't a place for a serious poker game but if you're looking to have some fun with a small group of friends, it's phenom! read more

It was fun to play board games and the drinks were good, but think we are just spoiled by the other board game bars we've been to in Seattle and Toronto (where you don't pay per game you decide to play). We totally get a rental fee for the first game, but didn't understand having to pay each time we switched out a game. It made us realize why groups were holding on to a ton of games they weren't necessarily playing because there's no incentive to return it and allow others to play it! Our team host a happy hour on the mezzanine at Board Room recently and it was GREAT! Rental was totally reasonable, and we were able to get food delivered. What a nice alternative to boring sit-down dinners, or hideously expensive buy-outs. read more

I went to Board Room on a Thursday night to hangout w/ about 20 friends from out of town. We were able to get the front section reserved upstairs by the guardrail. First off I must say that I love the fact that they don't serve food. It was very convenient with our large group to just order pizza and chill until it arrived. I was surprised that one bartender was able to successfully handle about 40-50 patrons upstairs and none of us ever waited more than a couple minutes to get a drink. The staff was friendly, the bathroom was clean and the decor was cool for the game lovers. I'd highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a laid back place to kick it with some friends before going out. read more

I love this bar! Went with a group of friends tonight. The bartender helped us find a space to sit, play games, enjoy drinks. The front windows were open and you could feel the breeze come through. LOTS of taps and beer choices, solid wine selection and really interesting and delicious specialty cocktails that include hibiscus hand-crafted soda and orange and grapefruit crushes! They don't have a kitchen, but you can bring food in or get a great deal and delivery of pizza from Flippin' Pizza two doors down (they offer 25% discount for Board Roomers - wow). The prices were reasonable, particularly at happy hour, when there are some great deals. The bartender (there are no "servers" per se) was attentive and came by our table regularly to check in and chat. Tabs work upstairs and down and you can put the games on your tab, which was convenient. We got one game that was missing a piece. The game keeper/door man was more than happy to switch it out and put the game aside. Clearly, they care about the quality of their games, so the small fee made sense. And, not to bury the lede, but the decor is fantastic. Great looking, with lots of tongue-in-cheek touches to "discover". Bathrooms were clean and never had a line. Place had a great overall upbeat social vibe and it looked like everyone was having a good time. I loved the punctuation of hearing other people's games. "JENGA" was a regular happy chorus. I think this place is perfect if you just want to stop by for a cocktail on your way home, for a birthday, a first date, for a small group or big. Looks like they can and are more than willing to accommodate a group of any size. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Dupont Circle and maybe DC. read more

That being said, the two guys working the door/games yesterday when we stopped in as part of Whiskey Walk were uber friendly, smiley and helpful. Clientele was a bit rowdy, but there was also a bachelor party (what bachelor party starts at 4 p.m.??) there along with us Whiskey Walkers. Bartenders didn't treat us like second-class citizens just looking to get our free shots (as was the case at other bars--James Hoban's specifically), which was nice. Many game bars don't keep up with the quality of their games and they are often missing pieces or in general worse for the ware, but the Board room had a great selection of well kept games to choose from for only a small fee. The bar was a lot larger than I though it would be and it was not very crowded despite being a Saturday night. Service was decent, nothing to complain or complement about. Plenty of board games to play at this bar off of DuPont Circle. Definitely a good place for big groups and outings. You do have to bring your own food but you can get your wine beer and cocktails at the bar. Unfortunately I wasn't impressed with their cocktail choices or their liquor selection. I really like this place. I sipped on some Strongbow and my friends taught me to play Settlers. It's an ingenious idea really, since games often takes several hours so customers may stay for a long time and get several drinks. It's conveniently located in Dupont, so if you're hungry, you can bring in some food from other places or get it delivered. Went here on a rainy Saturday night and really enjoyed it. There were plenty of cider, beer and drink options at decent prices and my server was really experienced and friendly. We were able to play 5 games and they did not charge us since it was less busy than usual due to the weather, which we very much appreciated. They have a good mixture of old and new games, but be warned that if you sit at the bar top you might not be able to play some of the games because the bar itself is too narrow. I went here last night for a birthday party and really enjoyed myself. Luckily, they had reserved a section of the bar upstairs so we had plenty room to play various games (highly recommended to do beforehand). Unfortunately the bar got packed quickly so we were fortunate to have our own space. You can rent out the bar's games, however, we brought our own. There is no kitchen, but you can feel free to bring in outside food. There is a Chinese restaurant next door as well as a pizza joint which is where we got our food from. My only complaint was that it was REALLY loud (not sure if there is anything they can do with the acoustics) so during a busy evening trivia/talking games are definitely out of the question! read more
