The space is fairly massive with plenty of screens, so even for popular games you'll likely be able to find a space to perch. I was concerned that for a highly anticipated match it might just be standing room only. But even with a 9pm start and a 9:30pm arrival, my friend and I both were able to find some seats. The bartenders were attentive while appearing to be laid back and kind. Even the food people ordered looked pretty good as well! If there is a good game on with highs and lows, the energy of the crowd really matches the energy of the game. I see a lot of other positive reviews specifically saying this is a good bar to watch FIFA World Cup games. I would not recommend this bar for the World Cup. Today for the Norway / England quarter finals game the line was wrapped around the building over an hour before the game. We were in line at 3:45pm. It said on their flyer they would begin letting people in to watch the game at 4pm (game started at 5pm). I've been to Franklin hall before I know how big it is and it's even bigger if they open up the second space. I didn't think we would have any problem getting in. 4:45pm comes around and we start hearing from other people that they're at capacity. My husband went up and they were giving very unclear answers. Apparently they had a party for the embassy of Norway, I'm not sure how much space that was taking. I think they could've announced to the long line that had been waiting over an hour that they were at capacity. It ended up being a rush to find alternative bars to watch the game. Totally understand it gets busy, but wish there was better communication to the fans outdoors. read more

We were looking for places to play Trivia on Tuesday night and found this place online. I called them to confirm if they had it still going on. My husband and I went with a couple of our friends. Happy hour ends at 7 and trivia starts at 7. Great drink prices during their happy hour. It's a big place with various styles of seating arrangements for larger groups as well as smaller groups. They also have 3 nice pool tables and I heard that they host APA travel league here. There were many teams for the trivia night. Almost 40 teams. We came 18th. Not bad as I such at trivia. I was there for a party and our group was occupying a back space in the hall. I was impressed with the beer selection and went with a delightful sour. I had a nice interaction with the bartender, so the 2.5 stars were for this. Once I had a drink in hand, I went in pursuit of food. I ordered the hotdogs, which came with fries, and the fried pickles. I was unhappy to find the hotdogs were already dressed with ketchup, mustard, and onions, when I collected my food. I don't like ketchup on hotdogs. So I had to scrape off most of that. The fries were ok when they were warm but absolutely useless if they cooled down at all. Fried pickles were decent. I rarely frequent DC, so it's unlikely I'll be visiting here again or often, but if I did, it would be to drink, not to eat. read more

Came here to watch an Arsenal game (Go Gunners!) and it did not disappoint! First I want to talk about the organization of the facility. I love how they have the bar where you can order but if you want food you can also order at a separate window. They also have buzzers for food and it makes things so much easier to manage. We went here for an event (US Open- hosted by the DC tennis club). It was in the room in the back that had its own bar. We got the onion dip, chicken tenders, and the quesadillas on the food specials menu. We also got the special drink of the night "honey deuce". The drink had a bit too much ice in it to be $13 but it was good (honey dew were triangle though- not balls). We had asked for more chips for the onion dip but they wanted to charge us $3 additional. This is an interesting spot. They are very family friendly during the week, prior to 8 PM. We came here with our twins and they loved it. There are many games for them to play -- from giant tic tac toe to giant Uno cards. There is a lot of space in this venue. We ended up grabbing a long table with an area where our kids could play with the blocks and make a total mess! Food here is pretty basic, but our kids loved it. Think cheeseburgers, french fries or tator tots, tacos and quesadillas. We enjoyed all of the food offerings. This is not your wine spot! They offered a limited wine menu of cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot grigio. None of the wines we love were on the menu. Our recommendation is to stick to the beers on tap. Went by here on Sunday night to see about the Salsa/bachata event they have. I was hungry after attending a salsa class at another place before so I ordered some lemon pepper wings and a coke. It was $14 for 6 wings. Those were the worst wings I've ever had. They tasted nothing like lemon pepper and were extremely salty. Salt was all you tasted. Awful. There was a separate room for the private party that had beer tables, TVs, a separate bar and bartender. The private room was super spacious so definitely great for a large party. They had catered pretzel bites with cheese, brussels sprouts (amazing!), Cheeseburgers, chicken, wings, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, veggie wraps, and all of that was 10/10. Fingers crossed that it's on the regular menu as well. This was a wonderful place to go with family (adults) after a wonderful dinner nearby. We wanted to frequent a lively place where we could also spend quality time together playing pool and having a few brews. We found it and we had a great time. Franklin Hall occupies the footprint of a previous huge commercial laundry facility that existed when I lived in DC back over a decade ago. As a result, the place is huge and they recently expanded. The two sides have their own full bar and the "old" part has the food service with dining tables and bar. The "new" side has a bar, pool tables, and a large sitting area. The place is just HUGE. We entered and they were having live music and an interview with locally famous people surrounded by a very friendly audience. We admired the beer menu, which contained a large selection of local microbrews as well as national brews. I had the Franklin Hall IPA that was shipped from Chicago. It was delightful. We then entered the next side with the pool tables. Although well frequented, it was spacious enough for conversation. Many groups, including sports teams, were having a great time, enjoying brews and having lively conversations. The salient feature of the venue - besides the brews - is just what a fun, and inclusive place it is. Every race, ethnicity and orientation was present. With a huge rainbow flag at one end. Went here to watch a recent football game. My friends had luckily already gotten a spot when we I arrived as the place was packed! Everyone at the bar was there to watch the football game, but one of the TVs in the room was playing the basketball game. Wish they would have changed it. The best place to watch sports. There are so many TVs and they really do show every game. They have bingo on Mondays, trivia on Tuesday and Wednesday. Games all weekend long and they have touch tunes so you can control the music. A massive place with the main side by the entrance being the louder more lively side and the other having pool tables and high tops. Food is bar food, expect nachos, wings, fried pickles, quesadillas and burgers. Not the best, but not the worst and reliable considering you are there for the sports and beer. Franklin Hall is your typical sports bar. It is the perfect place to camp out on a Sunday for football. They have a wide range of beers available in addition to wine and liquor. Their food is ideal for soaking up some alcohol. While they are PACKED on game day their service is superb. It does not take long to get the attention of a bartender and get another round of drinks. For improvement I do wish Franklin Hall would increase their vegan options. It was not clear what food I could enjoy as a vegan. I am sure this is not a complaint to most people however I did not like that I could not hear anyone sitting next to me. The venue is so loud. I don't think Franklin Hall can improve that, and I am sure many people go there because of the loud cheering crowds. For what it's worth, this is a classic sports bar. I believe this is a Philly team sports bar. On football weekends this place shadows a divey atmosphere with beer soaked tables and floors. I visited on an NFL weekend and it was packed, shoulder to shoulder. On weekends and major sporting events this bar is perfect for singles and the young crowd who are not turned off by close contact with others. How packed was it? Borderline uncomfortable. They have plenty of drink options to choose from. The business does a good job of maintaining city ordinance on capacity limits, so it is not uncommon to experience long lines to enter. This week, we had a fabulous time competing against the other 39 teams present and in search of the ultimate prize ($50.00 of that evening's bar tab). While we did not win, my friends enjoyed the cocktails and bar-food offerings available to the venue's patrons. Unfortunately, the food menu is not friendly to those who are gluten-free; I had to eat before visiting Franklin Hall as its menu is very much focused on (or in contact with) gluten.
