Love love love this place. Four of us went on a Saturday around 2 PM and it was not packed at all making it so enjoyable to grab a table and pick whatever games that were available. We found out happy hour was 12 to 7 so for our duration of the time we spent there, we were able to get great drinks and play fun games for free. I do know after 7 o'clock the drink prices increase as well as a three dollar rental fee for games, but to be honest that is very reasonable because they use it to replace games in case they are broken/lost. I definitely recommend this place. It is a fun place to hang out even if you don't wanna play board games or even if you do wanna play board games and don't wanna drink it's the best of both worlds. We will definitely be coming again. I also really liked how it was not super loud in there as you could really focus on your table in your games while listening to music in the background. I've come here a couple of times now and it's always a chill, good time. They don't have food (aside from a single item, the "Salty Bag of Chips" on their menu LOL) but you can bring food from outside. The vibe is very laid back and casual, which is perfectly fitting for a board game cafe. That said, they still have an interesting drink menu featuring things like the Jalapeño Margarita. There's a good selection of games toward the front--some you'll have heard of, some you probably won't have. The happy hour ends at 7 PM and the drink prices after that are reasonable. We played Qwirkle, which was a new game to me, although there was a napkin inside saying that it was missing eight pieces. Shout out to whoever wrote that! I was really hoping to love this place because I love board games and used to go all the time before I moved to DC. I was a disappointed though because there weren't very many options for games and most of them were more "basic" type games. I generally go to these kinds of establishments in order to have a chance to try new games and all of the ones I've been to before, had shelves and and shelves with hundreds of games. It advertises as a place to play board games and grab drinks, but the set up and size/shape of tables is not meant for games besides cards. So the question is, what is the $2 per game fee being put towards? Because it certainly isn't being used to keep the game library updated and in good condition like they're claiming. I rented Pandemic and the rule book was in pieces, and missing pages. Components were missing that were necessary to play the game, and the cards were splitting in half. Why was this game on the shelf in this condition? The beer selection was decent and the location was great..but board games?? Definitely not. Maybe try advertising differently, or use the $2 per game charge to actually take care of your games. I was waiting for a food pickup from a nearby restaurant and saw a window sale booth set up. My curiosity got the best of me and so I stopped to check it out. They had a simple, but intriguing set of alcoholic beverages (IPAs, growlers, spiked lemonades in pouches or mason jars). When I asked about nonalcoholic beverages, I was first directed to canned soda, Capri Sun and bottled water, but then was asked if I was interested in one of the cocktails made into a nonalcoholic beverage. I jumped on it and ordered the strawberry basil lemonade. Not only did she make one fresh for me, she also charged a much lower price than the alcoholic beverage. This is an awesome bar. My boyfriend and I came here twice during our stay in DC. When my boyfriend suggested that we go to a game bar, I thought it was going to be kind of lame; it was anything but. This is a very cool spot and we felt like we found a gem in DC. The bar itself is stunning with the Monopoly themed surface. I had the Strawberry Basil Lemonade twice. It was amazing. I'm still thinking of it and want to try and make it myself. There are a ton of games here for $2/game. This is a great place to come with friends and on a first date. Came here with friends after work for happy hour and board games. Drinks are reasonably priced and games are $2 to rent. You can stay here as long as you want and can bring in outside food which is nice. I do wish they sold food themselves though so it's more convenient if you are hungry and looking for something to eat. Service is quick and easy; order what you want at the bar and can keep a tab open until you're ready to leave. There's both upstairs and downstairs seating. In theory I love the idea of this place. It's a bar where you can drink a bunch of beers and play a bunch of board games. While I love the theory this place is just okay to me. I stopped by on a Friday night and it was packed- not their fault, that's actually a good thing for them. I walked around with my friend and then we found a seat at the bar. It was much louder than I anticipated there. Some of it was bar talk and then randomly you'd hear the losing cry of someone who just got bumped while playing SORRY. They have a decent beer selection on tap and a bunch of speciality drinks in a cool menu. You have to pay $2 to play a board game. Someone is there monitoring this. The bad thing is every game I took back was missing pieces. I returned a game and had to pay another $2 for a game I couldn't play? Seems kind of odd. I get the idea I think- if you pay you'll have more respect for it, but when people are drunk I think respect goes out the door. We ended up playing a few games of Yahtzee! and some MFK which created a lot of chuckles and conversation. Give it a shot. My recommendation is to really look over the games before you commit. We had a great time at the Board Room! Game rentals are free before 7 PM with any purchase and they have a great selection of games. We went at about 4:00 on Saturday and it wasn't very busy at all. It started to get busy around 5:30 when we were leaving and almost every table was full. The only thing that I didn't like was that when the bartender asked if we wanted to start a tab, I said no and he opened one anyways but gave me my card back so I didn't know he had opened one. The only way I found out was because I thought it was strange I didn't have to sign anything for my card when he gave me my drink. When we were leaving I asked if I had to sign anything and he said yes I have to close my tab. So always double check but other than that it was fun! read more

I love the concept of this place. They have a full bar, you can play tons of board and card games that they provide, and they let you bring in food from anywhere! When you enter, there is someone at the door who checks your ID, and then you're good to go! More than likely, it will be crowded in there -- though to be fair, I've only been on weekends. If you are having a large group, I strongly suggest you arrive earlier than planned and scope out a seat, unless you choose to reserve online. They do not take reservations over the phone, you are required to fill out the online form. I tried this, and got a response within the expected 2 business days... and when I tried to follow up on that I never did get a response, so honestly I would just say forget the online reservations all together. Happy hour is from 4:00-7:00 on weekdays, and 12:00-7:00 on weekends, so it can be a great time!! They have plenty of beer options, and rails and wines are only $4, so it's definitely worth a visit if you're in a game mood. Did I mention you can bring your own games as well? There's no food because there's no kitchen..much like some of the really crummy apartments my musician friends lived in when they weren't busy crashing on my couch. Fortunately, there's a pizza place next door that does a great business with the assistance of all the board game playing drunks. In future, I might bring something fancier with me...but also, it's a beer and board games place, so who am I kidding, I'm getting drunk and eating pizza. You come here to drink beer. Yes, there is a cocktail menu, but unless you're happy with a rum and coke like your roommate's boyfriend used to make, you really just want beer, and lots of it. It's not expensive, but it's not cheap and it's not fancy. It's domestic, drinkable beer that you don't think too much about...a bit like some of the frat parties said roommate used to frequent, but honestly a hell of a lot better because I'm not being forced to shotgun PBR. You will pay to rent a board game, unless you get lucky like we did and no one is collecting fees the night you show up. You will not complain about this, because unlike the broke college kid you once were, you don't think $2 is an insane amount to pay for a game that isn't missing 87 pieces. The money goes to repairing and replacing the games, so hush already, y'all. $2 is still a heck of a lot less than what you pay to do almost anything in this town, including park your dang car. Once you have your beer, your game, your food and your friends, you claim a table upstairs because there's not much room to play downstairs and it's much more fun to spread out over a big table anyway. When you get bored of what you have, you ask the table next to you if they want to swap games. Maybe you get involved with whatever game is currently happening and end up making some new friends. Much like college, this place is not perfect, but it's a good time and you might even meet some cool new folks while you're there. From the name & decor alone, once you step into Board Room DC you know what you're getting yourself into! For me personally, a bar that is solely devoted to board games and drinks is definitely quite unique. There's no cover charge for this bar and it's not necessarily "the place" to go to if you're trying to get your groove on, but you're able to spend time with your friends & rent out board games, what's not to love? They have a wide variety of board games that you can choose to rent for ~$2! And what's more rad is that the games range from those that you may have not even seen in ages and some that you see (and love to play, might I add) with a few drinks in hand. The main bar is on the first floor and there's a smaller bar upstairs (that may or may not be open, so you might have to make a trip downstairs for a drink). The only tidbit that may be bothersome for you is that they do not serve food, BUT you're in DC and there's food all around you! Brownie Points, the pizza joint a few doors down (Flippin' Pizza) gives you a pretty awesome discount on your order if you're a customer of Board Room. I give Board Room DC 4 Stars for uniqueness and ambiance alone, but I'll have to say that during peak hours it's extremely hard to find a table and since the whole point of going to this bar is to spend time with your friends and actually play board games...and you know sit with them with a table without awkwardly trying to stand and play Connect Four, Settlers of Catan, Cards Against Humanity etc. So if you're not trying to go to Board Room on weekdays or non-peak hours then I'd suggest that you come a little earlier than you were planning to grab a table or vulture for one! The beer selection is broad and usually as 2-3 things I want to try on it. The concept keeps it at five stars, because it's not perfect. The games are "well loved" and so it can be somewhat frustrating to play because cards are worn and sticky and sometimes a piece or two might be missing, but that's hard to complain about. The noise level can be pretty impressive and it can be hard to find a table if it's a busy night, but again, hard to complain too much. Lastly, while the tap list is long and usually has a few interesting parts, it's actually a bit disappointing for 20+ taps. Board Room has a variety of games to choose from and is a great second or third date night place or spot for hanging with friends. It also has a super convenient location in DuPont. The bar can get super crowded, so come early or be prepared to wait for a table or spot at the bar. Drinks are reasonably priced and will run you $8-$12 for most, depending on your standard for alcohol and if you want to slide down more chutes than climb ladders. Games are $2 per game, not unlimited, and many are missing pieces but you can mostly make do. Or you can combine games and confuse the next bar-goers even more. Sure helps if you have a drink or two in you. If you have more than that, you'll forget the games are missing pieces and will just start to create your own rules. Staff are mostly friendly and helpful but generally cater towards a more "hands-off" crowd. Most people here get one or two drinks and play games with friends. Interesting concept. While I have never been to one of these bars before (so I don't have much to compare to), there are a couple of things that keep me from giving 5 stars. As the same suggest, there are board games at the front of the bar that you rent for $2 (cash or add to your drink tab). The downstairs is rather loud with music, but there is also an upstairs area (that overlooks the lower area) toward the rear for a quieter game night. There's a bar upstairs as well, but I've not seen it open in the three times I've visited (although I have visited only on non-weekend nights). I've been to this place a lot and the service was TERRIBLE!! Their BEST & most polite bartender is BETH! She's great. I literally don't even enter the bar if she not there. Everyone else I've met have been extremely rude. This place is fun and the drinks are straight forward but I wish the overall customer service was better. I even felt discriminated against because my friend & I were given a completely different attitude than most other people these particular bartenders approached.
