This has been one of my favorite old fashioned restaurants to go to for over 40 years! Cool old boarding house, quaint little bar with a nice selection and great drinks, wonderful salad bar and soup every night and a nice full menu. This is my favorite restaurant of all time. This boarding house was built by a Menominee Indian in the late 1800s. You can feel the history when you walk inside. I love the atmosphere. It's very cozy and homey. It takes you back in time. The food is amazing. The prime rib is out of this world. Delicious salad bar and the soups are always fantastic. Went searching for a new super club in the general area. Unfortunately, it is becoming harder and harder to find a good ones in the northwoods. This one was very good, really glad we checked it out. Arrived early on a Thursday, so was pretty quiet. Very friendly staff taking our beverage and then food orders. Relatively humble full bar with bottled domestic brews. Ambience is neat - is a real former 1800s boarding house. It's small with a couple also smaller dining rooms. As others mentioned, it's cozy and you will likely end up talking to a neighboring table. Isn't that to be expected? Part of the true experience! After sitting, standard salad bar with very fresh ingredients. Didn't try the soup, but smelled good. Real star was the main dish. Didn't go for seafood, but combined we had two tenderloins, prime rib and some kids meals. The steaks and prime rib were exceptionally good. Well seasoned and cooked perfectly to temperature, the steaks with a nice char. Companions had baked potatoes and hash browns, which they both enjoyed. I went for fries, which were very crispy and well down but thin. With all of the great juice out of the steak, steak fries would really have hit to spot to soak that up. Wonderful food and service! Went there recently for my birthday and dinner was exceptional!

This place is an oasis in diner-filled desert of northern Wisconsin. Very good food. You walk in and wait at the bar for a table, then get soup and salad while you wait. Classic supper club concept. My review: Waiting for your table: Terrible experience. You walk in and you have no idea where to go. Do you wait at the door, which is extremely cramped? Do you go over to the bar? If you don't know, it'll be confusing, and everyone will look at you like you're an idiot. There is no employee or sign to tell you where to go. Bad for visitors. Every table is full of people, so you're forced to stand. The waitress will then walk by you and if she notices you walked in, she'll take you're order. Most times, she doesn't notice, especially if she doesn't know who you are... so it's probably best to make mention to the bartender that you're there. She'll take your order and you'll wait for them to clear a table. If you can get the bartender's attention, you can order a drink while you wait. They'll come get you and you can go to the table, then go to the salad bar. Soup & Salad Bar: Top notch. Great selection of items to put on your salad. Doesn't come across as cheap or cafeteria-ish at all. Very classy. Soups were decent, but I'm not much of a soup guy, so I try my wife's. Only problem is communication (a regular pattern)... is it all you can eat? Should I load my plate for the one trip I get, or can I take it in stride and come back? No one answers. Then, the food comes. The food: Excellent, depending on what you order. Honestly, just order the steak. Don't try and get cute by ordering the chicken pasta or whatever other nonsense is on the menu. My wife got pretty sick doing that. The steak is excellent. Tender, juicy. Leaves you full. Just order a steak and be happy with your life. The atmosphere: Cramped. Between waiting in a tiny bar or having tons of tables packed into a little room, it's pretty cramped and makes it somewhat uncomfortable. You're so close to the table around you that conversation can feel awkward. You want to be quiet, but it's too loud. The table next to us was talking about some very inappropriate topics for a public environment. The decor is old and feels like grandma's house. And with the wait being in the bar and the amount of alcohol some guests are consuming, I'd be hesitant to bring kids along. Price: Great, considering the area and lack of competition. I was stunned by how low their prices were. The only other options around are diners and bars. You have to drive to Green Bay or Appleton to get something like this. They could have charged whatever they wanted. Overall: Again, this is an oasis in a desert of diners. It's certainly not a place I could afford to take my family each week, but you could eat there regularly. The service is mediocre and the waiting for your food, while I understand the concept, could be done much better. But the food makes it all better. You're not going to find better food unless you go to Green Bay or Appleton. I'd still recommend it. read more

salad bar was ok ,diner not so much food overcooked , when we brought this to the wait staff attention we were told to talk to the bar staff , when we did that he was very rude and told us it was not his fault.I would say almost any other supper club a better choice. read more

Our friends got married near here and the chef they hired cancelled a week before the wedding. There were only 7 of us, so someone recommended this restaurant to us instead. The bride called the restaurant a week ahead and asked if we could get a table at 7pm. She was met with "we don't take reservations" as a response, but that we could come. No attempt to help or empathize. The night of the wedding, they had not set aside a table and told us it would be an hour wait (even though 2 of the 4 tables I could see from the entrance were clean and empty) and repeatedly reminded us that they don't take reservations in a very rude attitude. While I understand that they don't typically take reservations, I would have thought that given the predicament we were in, they might've been willing to help us out. We were completely polite and we would have spent quite a bit on food and alcohol. We ended up going elsewhere. read more

I've been to the boarding house many times and I have enjoyed everyone of my meals. There still seems to be some confusion at the bar when my boyfriend always orders the same thing and seems that it comes to him made differently every time. He always orders a Kessler's sweet old fashion with maple syrup and mushrooms, sometimes it's made with honey sometimes it's made with a different whiskey they always seem to have to ask his garnish when I believe after the third or fourth cocktail before dinner the bartender should be able to remember his order, and make it correctly consistently. I always order the same meal every time the large fillet mignon with salmon on the side and vegetable, my steak has always been done to perfection except the last few times my salmon was extremely over cocked and I'm not one to complain but the last time I did mention it and they told me that they were out of salmon, And cannot replace it. My largest complaint is as a professional chef and bartender when you order an entire bottle of wine and do not consume the entire bottle as long as it is record and wrapped in a bag most restaurants will allow you to take the remaining bottle home with you when I asked for this convenience I was very rudely yelled at by the owner saying that she cared more about her business, Then my customer service I have yet to be back and will not return until apologies are made for quite unnecessarily being spoken to so rude in front of a bar full of people. read more

My girlfriend just came home from a family get together. They kicked the entire family out during the middle of the gift exchange (after spending $30/person), never offered deserts, and acted like the party was an inconvenience. A restaurant that does not want customers, will not get customers. Poor customer service, we will not be back - ever. read more

My family decided to have our family gift exchange and dinner at the Boarding House, we called ahead a month in advance to give them notice that a group of 15 - 18 was coming at 6:00 on 12/12/2015. We were treated rudely from the start, the food was good, but service was horrible, never came to check on our table, we actually just finished our last bite and were told we had to leave, that we couldn't open the gifts there, when we asked again, they said ok, you have 15 minutes, we were never offered dessert, barely finished with the gifts and they came back again and demanded we get up and leave, we had just spent close to $300.00+, usually when you pay the bill, you get thanks for coming, not here, needless to say our get together was ruined by rudeness and poor customer service, lesson learned, will never go back, I have been treated better at fast food restaurants. read more

We used to go here many years ago and tried it again after we heard there were new owners. It was fantastic! Quick, friendly service and amazing food. A good salad bar and one of the best tenderloins I have had in a while. Our party also had prime rib, walleye, and boiled shrimp and everyone loved their meals. read more

Please don't waste your time, money or effort to dine here. Boarding House of 10-12 years ago was 100% better than it is today. Same or similar menu, but food quality is not. While serve staff was friendly, service was lacking but the real downer was that food was near unedible. read more
