I was very pleased with the lunch special today, dropped in around 1130 and had no problem with seating. I always like the booth seating. We had the BBQ pork with your choice of 2 sides for 10.99. We enjoyed the pulled pork and was not overly seasoned and came with some awesome sauce on the side.The portions were great and very filling. They had some good music playing and they treated us with some hush puppies while waiting. It just felt very comfortable had a good feel to it. The boathouse is our breakfast place when we are in town. We've never eaten other food, but I'm sure they are really good. Decent portions, the staff is friendly, manager working, the place is very clean, ALWAYS. And crowded!! Parking can be a little frustrating. But there's a reason why they are fully crowded. We choose counter/bar, to avoid waiting. We always get the special breakfast. And always order the same: scrambled eggs, 2 slices of Bacon, biscuit and hash browns. Of course, there are other options: I had once one of the omelets and wow! Coffee is not the best but where do you get this special breakfast for only $5,49? Husband and I had breakfast with coffee /sweet tea for $16 with tax. Love this place. And I totally recommend it! read more

I honestly felt like this was an overpriced cracker barrel. The presentation was 0 points. I ordered $30 blackened Mahi and it got served just a piece of fish on a plate. Rice or garnishes or sauce? And the sides sound good until you get them and realize its all jus canned or instant foods. This place could be a lot better if the presentation was on point. Restaurant is dirty and mold everywhere. As soon as you enter, all the ceiling tiles are black and moldy across entire front area. So bad that you can smell the mold as soon as you enter. Sitting in booth, I could see dust and dirt on the blinds and in the window seel. The bathroom is filthy, old dirty fixtures and toilets and floors. I have always been a weekly fan of this restaurant but since the owner had passed away, it has gone downhill being managed by his son. Tom used to always be proud of his restaurant. I was so worried about the moldon the ceilings that I looked up recent inspection report online, and it mentions worst problems in kitchen. Food is great but customer beware. read more

Tried for the first time today and got a mixed fried seafood platter. None of it was very impressive but the scallops (that they upcharge for) were raw. I'm down with a scallop a little rare/raw in the center but this was edge to edge raw. Had to toss almost all of them. I've worked with plenty of grouper and made plenty of shrimp scampi, there is no way the fish beat the pasta out. The overcooked fish was disappointing; and, as a primarily Italian-trained chef, I was disgusted by the sad excuse for a shrimp scampi I received. My wife and I have always wondered where good calabash style fried shrimp can be found in Wilmington...we just found them! If you know of any other places with great fried shrimp...please feel free to send me a private comment. Let's start with the atmosphere of this restaurant... It seems that other reviewers are picking on the decor a bit. Well, if the owners ever read this...DON'T CHANGE A THING! Yes, it's a bit corny. Yes, it's a bit trite. But that's what makes it so great! I am so tired of restaurants all trying to look the same and, in doing so, abandoning the concept of "theme". I WANT to go to a seafood restaurant that has nautical instruments on the wall. I want to see a model ship or two. Give me a ship's wheel on the wall any day of the week! This restaurant slaps you square in the face and says, "Hey, you're eating in a seafood restaurant" Heck, I own a pirate costume (don't ask why)...perhaps I will donate my time to roam around the restaurant and scowl at the customers! But I digress... In my opinion, too many restaurants have abandoned their themes and have turned in to sterile, lifeless, homogenized dining experiences. This place reminds me of seafood restaurants growing up in the 1980's...and it's very familiar and comforting. They only thing they were missing was the giant carving of a sailor at the wheel wearing the traditional yellow slicker! May I suggest to the management that you add one. The service... The service was very good. We never had to wait on drink refills, etc... The food... The food was excellent. The restaurant was at capacity when were entered. We placed our orders and our drinks were brought to the table immediately. Moments later, a steaming basket of hush puppies were also served (free) along with some whipped butter. Or main entrees came out in about 25 minutes which, to be honest, I thought was pretty fast based on how packed the place was! I see so many people complaining in various reviews if food takes 20 minutes or more to come out. I just don't understand it. If you are with a person you care about...enjoy the time to talk! Stop rushing everything! Life is short to be annoyed by a little wait on some good food. If you want fast food...you should have gone to McDonald's anyway! Our entrees were delicious. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with a nice, crispy Calabash style batter. My wife said her deviled crab was excellent and that it wasn't over-breaded. The hush puppies were good and crispy. All in all...a great experience. I guess the only negative comment I could make during this experience is that the prices were a bit high for what you get. I am not accustomed to paying $14.00+ for a basket of fried shrimp and a potato...but, at least it was delicious. Oh, and to the reviewer who took note that there was an "old crowd" present...you are correct. It did feel like 70% of the diners were senior citizens. Now, I am not quite sure why that is perceived as a negative thing; I think it's great! Oh man this place has DELICIOUS food!!! We didn't eat in, but I did get a good look at the place and it was very nice looking. I was directed to the bar to place my to-go order and the guys answered all my questions quite patiently and gave me excellent recommendations. Super nice person!! I ordered a sampler platter plus four deviled crabs for takeout. My children and I (four of us) thoroughly enjoyed that meal. My favs were the flounder and the oysters. All my children liked the flounder the best and the shrimp were their number two fav. The deviled crabs were good but I don't think I'd order them again. The hush puppies were good. The fries were not so great. I didn't get to try the coleslaw because we were stuffed. By the way, their tartar sauce was yummy with the perch. I didn't like the cocktail sauce for the shrimp because it was too much like ketchup - it needed more horseradish. I spent $38 including tax and tip. I'll definitely go to this restaurant again. Gobs of food, generally, good, attentive staff, average atmosphere. I really have no major complaints because I like this place and will return. The slight downside is they are pretty much middle of the road on everything, and in my humble opinion, they charge a high price for being middle of the road. Now, that said, they are very close to the water and in a high traffic location, so I imagine their overhead (rental, taxes) must be very dear indeed. The inside looks to be a bit out of the 70s with the netting and plastic kinds of decor. I might rate them higher if their prices did not outpace their offerings. Their food is good fried and sometimes broiled fare, but there's nothing that makes you go "Wow!" just good, solid food for a bit higher than I think I should pay. You will get a good quantity. My flo samich arrived in good time, opened on the plate, lettuce tomato onion on one side and a beast of a flounder filet in the other. Perfectly prepared, light Golden, crunchy outside and flakey steamy inside. I smeared some tartar sauce over the top, slapped that samich together and lunch was definitely on. I've searched out flounder sandwiches Up and down the east coast and, no lie, Boathouse ROCKS the Flounder Sandwich!! My family and I went here this weekend after one of the locals recommended it. I had really been craving fresh seafood especially a shrimp dish. First let me say the staff is great! I really enjoyed the greeters....I think one of them was a manager. Then we got one of the best servers! I forgot her name and I'm sad I did because I wanted to really acknowledge her. Anyways it seemed like all of the servers were great. Everyone had full glasses around us and the food was coming out in a timely manner. The service is what got this restaurant 3 stars from me. The food on the other hand was mediocre. I was disappointed in the lack of seasoning on my Shrimp Po' Boy and fries. Whatever you do don't get the fries! I ordered okra as a replacement and they were good just no seasoning at all. The shrimp on the sandwich was just tossed in flour and fried I'm sure. I had to put cocktail sauce on it just to give it some taste. Now if you are a person who doesn't care for seasoning and really just want to taste your food as it comes this may be for you but I expected more for sure!
