It was a gray Saturday, so Newburyport wasn't as busy as it normally is on a summer weekend. I debated whether or not to do the traditional lobster shack lunch or something a little more fancy "downtown". I didn't regret Bob Lobster, as it provided what I would expect with a place such as this. The lobster roll is a pretty good deal for the price. It isn't the biggest nor the greatest, but the roll is pretty darn good with knuckle and claw and NO excess filler. There was enough mayo just to maintain structural integrity but not to hide or overwhelm. I tried some of the fried clams and fried haddock that my friend ordered and they were above-average for lobster shack fare. The haddock was decently portioned and flaked nicely. The batter for the clams wasn't overwhelming and kept fairly light. Overall, the plate was rather generous with the portion and I had to do some helping out to finish. The fish chowder could have used more seasoning but it had a good amount of fish in it. Don't expect the same thickness as clam chowder and you should be reasonably satisfied. Service was prompt and polite. They offered water too if you didn't want soda or juice. You can sit inside or out, which is nice. Although the view that day wasn't close to ideal, I can imagine it being amazing on a lovely sunny summer day. read more

Bob Lobster must be under new ownership again. We've been going there every spring/summer for the last 4 years. They were our go-to for fried seafood. Always excellent. Not this time however. No resemblance at all to what we are used to. Haddock was bland and watery. French fries are completely different. They used to be crispy and delicious. Yelp sent me here on my way to Maine. Wow. What a fabulous meal - kids had fantastic chicken strips and fish and chips, I went for the twin lobster situation, it's a daunting task, to devour two gianormous lobsters, but I just finished the Boston Run to Remember half marathon and was feeling unusually ambitious. Sadly I could not eat more than one but they let me to do a take out. In truth this place was a slice of heaven with beautiful outdoor seating arrangement. The weather was in its high sixties, it sort of reminded me home back in the bay area, and it was simply a perfect day to dine outside. Food is a five. Service is a five. Atmosphere, Five plus. Came here on a Friday afternoon and food was amazing. Got the fisherman's platter, lobster roll and clam chowder (not pictured). Platter was huge probably good for 3 ppl. Aside from a few gritty clams, everything was lightly battered and delicious. Lobster roll bit small, however it was fresh n lightly dressed in mayo. Soup was runny and very thin, maybe just a bad day. Was surprised to see my total come out to $70, bit steep for what i got imo. However they did a great job social distancing during covid with rules in place. I sat at the picnic table and was able to bring my cooler for drinks. Food came out in under 10 mins. Can't complain. Awesome New England clam shack experience. We ordered a few lobster rolls, haddock pieces, calamari, and fried clams. I'm originally from CT and love hot lobster rolls with butter, but don't find that many places in MA. However, I do like a cold lobster roll when there's not too much mayo and this lobster roll was exactly that! I was impressed by the food overall. It came out within 15 minutes and we sat at a picnic table. They offer canned beer which is a nice add that not every "seafood shack" offers. Everything was delicious. The view is great and the seating is covid-19 friendly. I'd definitely come back. Stopped off on my way home from Plum Island. I just wanted a good authentic New England style lobster roll. They have many offerings, but I ordered mine with lemon tarragon aioli and caramelized shallots - which was heavenly and worth a solid 4 stars. The food is very, very good and even more so because of the location absolutely beautiful. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. I understand we are in a difficult time with Covid-19 and restaurants are doing the best they can I do agree with other posts in that as well spaced the tables are they are really dirty. I have never seen them wiped down anytime I have been there, that is the biggest turnoff. Maybe they can invest in resin to make it easier to clean. One other thing, I think it says something when the owner responds to reviews it shows that they really care about customers. The location is very cool, definitely the big draw. Aside from that, I was pretty disappointed. The lobster roll was very dry, as in each little diced bite (and I didn't see any claw meat), was just loosely flying around and falling out of the roll. I'm not the biggest mayo fan, but you need some in order to bind the meat. It was also flavorless :( The fried shrimp were pretty good- nice size jumbo shrimp, the breading held up really well, and there were no tails on, which is incredible (just added another star for that). The fries were also pretty good. However, I had asked if there would be tarter sauce with it, and the cashier wrote down extra tarter, only to find out once I got home 25 minutes later that not only was there no extra tarter, there was none whatsoever. There was cocktail sauce and coleslaw, neither of which I needed or like. I know things happen when you're busy, but it was such an avoidable mistake that did matter as far as my satisfaction for a high priced meal ($55). Tl;dr- I wish I had given more credence to the recent low ratings on here. Everything served piping HOT. The food was certainly not sitting around under a heat lamp. Incredibly tender and fresh-tasting fried shrimp and calamari. Breading was crisp but so light that it would sometimes fall apart in the sauce. Perfection! Fries were perfectly crispy and dense - no mush. If you're in the mood for some fresh New England seafood after a day at the beach, this is your spot! My fiance and I went here after spending a very nice afternoon at Plum Island beach just down the road. We were in the mood for some fish and chips and decided to check out Bob Lobster. When we pulled up to the restaurant, there seemed to be very little parking, as many other reviewers mentioned, and we pulled into the tiny dirt parking lot in the back of the restaurant. The lot maybe fits 15 cars. We then went to the front of the restaurant where you have to order from a window (even if you are sitting inside). We stood in line for about 15 minutes before we ordered. I heard people talking about calling ahead of time so you can just walk up and grab your food (which is a brilliant idea). We ordered the fried haddock pieces boat and some large fries and then took a seat outside under a canopy near the parking lot. We waited for about 10-15 more minutes to get our food, which was super fresh and piping hot!! DELICIOUS. The fries were crisp, the breading on the fish was fresh and hot (even 10 minutes into eating it was still steaming when I bit into it), and the fish was super tender and flaky---YUM. The portion of the boat was HUGE... my fiance and I both had enough for a whole other meal for both of us. The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because they definitely have room for improvement in areas given that they are so popular. I think they should offer an actual public restroom to customers (as they just have a port-o-potty behind the restaurant), their parking lot needs to be expanded as well, and also they should consider expanding their indoor restaurant area, as there are only about 10 tables indoors for seating and the rest is outside. Bob Lobster- a shell of its former self. I used to love this place, it was one of my favorite seafood shacks in all of New England. If someone has recommended it to you, they probably have the same fond feelings about it. Well, things are different now. This business changed hands in late 2023 and it has slid way, way downhill. They clearly now use frozen seafood and not the fresh seafood that is plentiful in this region. The former owners never would have done this. If you are wondering why the fresh seafood counter is gone, it's because they don't have fresh seafood. Mystery solved. And the portions are smaller now, but prices higher. Silly me for paying $40-something for a large fried clam, only to be given a half-full basket. I felt like it must be the same amount as the small, but spread out and with more fries to fool the customer. This place is a great example of how greed and owners who don't actually care about the quality of the product can destroy a once-great institution. Want to be duped? Staying in Salisbury for a week and was looking for the best lobster pound in the area. Yelp reviews said BOb's. Love this place! Ate at Bob's twice and both times, the lobster was fantastic. Cooked perfectly and so juicy. Onion rings and fries on the side were delicious, as was the Cole slaw and corn on the Cobb. The view of the water from the dining room didn't disappoint. Being New Englanders, lobster rolls and summer beach drives are hard wired in your DNA. So, our end of summer (ate there late August) ride out to Plum Island necessitated some beachy noms. Was opting for the regular lobster roll, but was upsold to the special with fried avocado and brioche roll. Maybe some folks need all that going on with their food, but wish I had stayed simple. Didn't add anything to the sandwich except . Onion rings were my preferred strips. Tasty, but could've stood a bit more time in the fryer. Chowder was solid and flavorful. Seating is limited, funky, etc as others have noted. Seriously, tho, stuff like that isn't a big deal because you're there for the crazy AF view. Watching the sun set over marshes touches my soul every time. Listening to fool tourists complaining about the lines/wait/ketchup/parking lot is easy to tune out. Overall, service was courteous and staff handled the crowds well in the small space. Food was solid albeit expensive ($23) for portions. I'm not a crab shack connoisseur so I don't have much to compare Bob Lobster to, but I really enjoyed it! It seems to be a fan favorite because the line was out the door when I went. I was really in the mood for just some basic lobster & butter so we stopped by. We brought the dog so we were grateful there were so many tables outside where he could hang out while we ate. My husband was not in the mood for seafood so he just got a chicken fingers basket. (Great news if you have non-seafood eaters in your party) My lobster was fresh enough that the seawater poured out when I cracked it open, and I tasted the salt. It was plump and juicy and boiled perfectly. And it was my lucky day because...no green slime! Coupled with some crunchy slaw and french fries, and I had a nice New England summer lunch. Not sure how well Bob knows his lobster, but he does fried seafood very well. This is one of my family's favorite spots perfectly nestled on the outskirts of Plum Island. The small, unassuming seafood shack delivers a scenic view, great food, and friendly service. Orders are placed at the counter inside. There are a few seats inside as well, but the casual dining room is a bit small. I don't believe I have ever taken a seat indoors at Bob Lobster, since the complete experience includes outdoor dining by the marsh. There are several picnic tables lined up outside the restaurant along the parking lot. Some tables are covered by umbrellas and a few are beneath a plastic-windowed tent for ultimate protection from the elements. The tables fill quickly so plan accordingly. If you see an open table upon arrival, send a member of your party to hold it while you tend to the ordering. Otherwise, you may find yourself creepily lurking around fellow diners enjoying their last few bites as you impatiently await your chance to pounce on their surrendered table like a seagull to your French fries. There are pretty views of the marsh on one side of the outdoor seating area. It is lovely enough to distract from the cars entering and exiting the gravel lined parking lot on your opposite side. The servers pop out the back door of the seafood shack with your tray of food and call your name while anxiously awaiting your waving hand to steer them in the right direction. This method works well until a noisy plane flies overhead (What? Who?) or you see the server mistakenly head down to the opposite end of the row of tables (Please come back - we are starving!) or you give a crazy name like Bertha and forget to respond because you are actually Susan. It is nice and convenient, however, not to have to return back to the counter to retrieve your food. Bob's serves your typical fried seafood fare and specializes in lobster. I have had a lot of fried seafood in my days and find most to be average, but Bob's is exceptionally good. It has a light batter and the seafood is noticeably fresh. They do their fries well too! As I mentioned earlier, I have not had a lobster dinner or a lobster roll here so I cannot comment on those. In addition to lobster, the menu consists of fried seafood plates, combo plates, salads, sides, chowders, sandwiches, and options for the kiddos. If you are a landlubber this may not be the best place for you, unless you are a big fan of chicken fingers. I had the fish and chips on my recent visit last weekend. The portion was very generous and delicious as always. Summer isn't over yet my friends, so add this to your 'must try' list! read more
