The deck was nice. The service was average and lacked experience. My swordfish was overcooked and I told the server and her comment was, 'I'll tell the chef'. She never offered to replace my meal. The swordfish was dry and very disappointing. I did not finish and she never acknowledged again. Server asked us about dessert while members in our party were still eating. We took advantage of their 1/2 price raw bar happy hour and indulged in delicious fresh jumbo lobsters, oysters and clams. This is a family owned restaurant with a scratch kitchen. The drink "ghost of Carlos"is an homage to the former restaurant that was a local staple for years - Carlos' Restaurant that was previously here. (The owners retired.) Another, bit of local insight is that the owner has named some of the mocktails after his kids and his dog. The servers are knowledgeable, extremely accommodating, and friendly. This couples well with a mellow laid back (midweek) vibe. (We were told that Thursday- weekend is much more crowded and lively with live music.) Now on to the food. The oysters were fantastic - very fresh and flavorful. The lobster was, in a word - perfect. It had the perfect balance of just enough mayonnaise and salt. Freshness that must be tasted. (The restaurant abuts the docks of commercial fishing boats.) The blackened chicken salad was very hardy and flavorful. Dessert - Flourless Chocolate Cake. It had great flavor and was unbelievably rich. It was nicely offset with freshly made whipped cream and a raspberry reduction. Finally, I'd highly recommend giving Decklyn's try. It has a nice balance of indoor and outdoor dining options with and excellent balance of service and delicious food options! read more

Was in the mood for a frozen drink. Someone suggested we go to Decklyn's. Greeted with friendly staff and a nice spacious , clean restaurant. We sat on the deck. Both appetizers ( haddock tacos and calamari ) were fantastic. Nice location - Will definitely go back to try a few things on the menu. read more

56 years of exhaustive research for the best steamed mussels ever and last night I found Valhalla in Decklyn's MUSSELS. Steamed and served in red curry, coconut cream, corn, and cilantro broth with crostini. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. My husband and our friend shared two dozen raw oysters and especially raved over the mignonette sauce. We also had lobster bisque, lobstah salad, beef brisket, ribs, and fried clams. Props for Allagash White beer but the Beachwater cocktail (vodka, elderflower, pomegranate, pineapple, cucumber, and basil) is a must. Seriously though, I'd fly back from the Pacific Northwest just for the mussels and broth. (We sat outside on the deck to enjoy a lovely summer evening. Decklyn's has been a favorite of ours this summer on Thursday nights, where we enjoyed dinner before the Harbor Loop concerts. A must have is their smoked prime rib, made especially for and served on Thursday's. So deliciously smoked and makes for an absolutely special meal! Their lobster salad is the best ever with arugula, avocado, corn and the tarragon vinaigrette. Steak tips and salmon are 2 other meals that we go back to and our other fav's are their coconut curry mussels and bang-bang shrimp! Chef Ben Insuik is very talented and takes special care in curating a unique menu, love that they offer specials too. We always leave talking about our dinners and how great it was! Plus the wait and bartending staff at Decklyn's consistently provide a wonderful dining experience. We love the outdoor deck and live music that continues throughout the weekend too. PS: If you are fortunate and there may be any leftover prime rib, you might find a Prime Rib 3-Way as a special on the menu over the weekend! read more

Located on harbor loop road, with the dining room and deck situated inside of two small wharves where medium size pleasure boats are docked. A vista type view out to the inner working harbor. Btw no water access to the restaurant unless you tie up at Harbormaster transient docks. Went in for lunch 8 16 25 around 12:30. Not very busy, maybe 20 patrons on the outdoor deck and one family inside. The decor is ok but that is not the reason you'll go. The real reason to visit is the superlative menu items and the helpful and friendly waitstaff. Libby was our waitress and in all things she was attentive, exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable about the Gloucester area and offered on point suggestions to complement our meals, a real pleasure. What came from the kitchen was brisket BBQ with cole slaw and non sweet cornbread topped with a healthy slab of butter, haddock tacos with Cole slaw, mussels in a coconut sauce, with iced tea with vodka for drinks. The overview is that the food has clearly had lots of attention paid to ingredients and prep. The bbq would satisfy any bbq lover. Quite tender brisket with a tangy sauce presented at an even temp throughout, clearly no microwave being used here. The fried haddock tacos, as opposed to their tuna tacos, have soft fresh wraps with a garnish of Chinese cabbage and small chunks of pineapple. The mussels are a mussel lovers dream, with plenty of toasted bread to sop up the plentiful sauce. Consider me odd if you like but Cole slaw is one of those items I use to judge restaurants. Decklyn's Cole slaw is obviously made in house as it's fresh and crispy and probably is served at 2.5x what other restaurants serve in tiny side dishes, so A+ for Cole slaw. Drinks were always full as well as copious napkins and even a moist cotton towel for hand cleanup from the mussels. Well worth the trip and prices are more than reasonable Thanks Libby! read more

The former Captain Carlo's has a brand new look. It was great to be able to sit in the shelter of the open dining room with the cool breeze unobstructed through the open sliders. The fried clams had bellies and my friend's scallops were the real deal, too. I think there might have been a special Sangria involved, but don't tell anyone. We enjoyed being out of the way of the tourist crowd. The recommendation from our chartered sailboat's crew didn't miss. It was a great place for a lunch on the water. read more

Where to begin, the place is okay. Good for a meeting place and drinks. They take reservations for large parties, though there isn't always accommodations for them. We were seated in front of a LOUD band that started at 7pm. The band was good but the wrong place and the wrong time. So no dinner conversation. I could barely hear the waiter. Luckily I could read lips. Texting came in handy for communication. I unfortunately had a dinner that apparently was overlooked on our order. When it finally came it wasn't fully cooked. I am a local and I've been there many times. The deck is amazing and the food is OK. However, I just had an experience that showed me that they don't care about the comfort of their diners. We had a 6:30 pm reservation for 8. the weather wasn't great so the deck was closed. they have two indoor rooms and our table was in the smaller one. we saw a band setting up in our room and, knowing it would make conversation difficult, we asked if we could move and they said no. canned music was playing and it was already pretty loud. talking was tough but we soldiered through. when the band started it was unbelievably loud. painfully loud. unbearably loud. I immediately stood up and left the room. I asked the manager if he could turn it down. he smirked (!) and shrugged and said "that's as low as it can go." Really ? I'm a semi-professional musician myself, and I've never heard of a sound system where the volume couldn't be reduced. I was shocked by this treatment. Usually people who serve the public work hard to be respectful to their customers. This man dismissed my discomfort and request for help with a shrug and a lie. I got my food wrapped and left. My friends stayed which I don't understand. They agreed with me that it was torture, but they managed to endure it while they finished their meals. I like to be flexible and accommodating too, but I don't think it's worth risking my hearing and enduring pain. I don't understand Decklyn's decision-making here. Why did they have this loud band playing indoors at 7 pm when the room was packed with diners? I imagine the band was booked for the deck but Decklyn's should have delayed their starting time. Again, as a musician myself, I know that restaurants do this all the time. This place sells food but it's really a bar. Dont go there to eat. Clearly they care only about their bar business. There are many restaurants in Gloucester with outdoor decks, and most of them have better food. Choose one of them. read more

Went to Decklyn's in Gloucester last night We loved Captain Carlos, so wanted to see how the new place was. Would not recommend. First, there's very little seafood on the menu. For a Gloucester place on the water, this was disappointing and unexpected. The prices are also very high. I got fish & chips - for $27. Second, quality... Nearly everyone was disappointed with their order (there were 15 of us). Guacamole was nothing but lemon juice, salmon was vinegary, burrito had little taste and was dry.... etc. Service was fine, atmosphere was good, they easily accommodated us.. but food was lacking. read more

We've paid two visits to Decklyn's since June. The first time was to sit on the deck listen to music and take in some small bites. Service was painfully slow that evening but it happens, plus they were fairly new at that point. We found the appetizer's mediocre at best. Round two in august,had a late lunch here, had oysters on the half shell they were fresh as could be,but not exactly shucked cleanly. Tacos were half decent but seasoning seemed like an afterthought. I went tonight for the first time with the new owners. It was great to see a familiar face behind the bar. The menu is a little strange for our area, doesn't make too much sense- snacks, to share plates, 3 sandwiches, burritos and tacos??, and then plates. I ordered a fish sandwich. Cost $15. I ordered it figuring like most sandwiches in most restaurants would come with chips or fries. Nope pictured below is what arrived. A sandwich on a side plate. Not only that the sandwich only has tomato on it- the menu mentioned Cole slaw and tartar sauce, neither where to be found. The fish was cooked well and they use Virgilio's bread. TexMex, but made by someone who has only seen pictures of it from far away. We visited DeCKlyns last night (Friday eve). We are big fans of CK pearl in Essex so we wanted to try out Pats new place. First impressions, this place is going to be a hit! It's right on the water with plenty of parking onsite and on street nearby. The painkillers are amazing, can't wait to come back on a warm day to sit on the deck and enjoy them! The menu is filled with local fresh ingredients and local seafood. If you are a fan of CK's smoked wings (as I am) Pat's brought them over to DeCKlyns and they pair well with everything on the menu. The carne asada was a treat, with a true Caribbean flavor the steak and tostones were a hit with everyone who ordered. The carnitas burrito was a delight, the pulled pork fresh cheese and crispy fries were a winning combo! Looking forward to coming back and trying out the rest of the menu including the fish and chips and tacos! Regulars of Captain Carlo's will recognize some friendly faces behind the bar! Not my first trip to Decklyn's and certainly won't be my last! Perfect, fun atmosphere, drinks are so good, not to mention the food! For drinks, we ordered a rum punch and Ghost of Carlos...didn't disappoint! "A" turned into a few :) Our bartender, Ami was attentive and quick to deliver~ Cheers to her shout-out-worthy mixology and will be back for more of those! For lunch, we ordered oysters (yum), mussels (with an extra side of buttery, toasted scali bread, only $1 and a must because that sauce is literally drinkable), fried clams and stuffed clams. DELICIOUS! Next on the list, that BURGER! Can't wait to sink my teeth into that~ See you soon! Ohhhh, and we got to see The Island Cowboy on a different evening for some fun, live music! Unfortunately the worst meal I have ever had. Chicken chili consisted of a lump of Luke warm chicken with what looked and tasted like Campbells tomato soup. No beans, no flavor. My son had the pulled pork taco which consisted of three greasy small pieces of pork and had what looked like pickled apples which tasted spoiled. The clam chowder was slimy and tasteless with two dried up clams on top that tasted like they found them in the bottom of the refrigerator. Food was inedible. The drink was watered down. Our server was very pleasant. They is why I gave it a 1 star.This was such a disappointment for us. read more

We ended up here because the wait time at Sea Grille up the street was over an hour.. We left here disappointed and $250 poorer. Decklyn's food was really subpar.. $26 for ceaser salad with 3 grilled shrimp was gross. The Parmesan cheese "crisps" were completely burnt and black, shrimp was dry and rubbery, completely overcooked and flavorless. How can you mess up a ceasar salad? But they did. Fries were served cold, stale and tasteless. Chips were stale, salsa tasted like canned tomatoes, the guacamole came from a bag and tasted vinegary?? The fish tacos were bland served on cold tortillas. The fried clams were soggy. The drinks were average. Seriously, this meal was a complete let down especially when we came from out of state to the Cape to get some good seafood!!! Will not return. Should've checked the reviews first. But we were starving and didn't wait to keep driving around looking for another place to eat. At least I did get an amazing lobster roll at another place in Rockport earlier that day. read more

I came here with my mom on Mother's Day for a nice view of the water and some lobster rolls. Figured that a restaurant in Gloucester, on the water, with a few 5 star reviews would be good, right? Wrong. First, we got lobster empanadas and clam chowder along with two cocktails. The cocktails were delicious, and so was the clam chowder. Lobster empanadas were soggy & not crispy/flaky at all. The lobster did not taste good. Still, we each ordered a lobster roll hot with butter. When it came out it looked pretty good (pictured). But we could not even finish it after a few bites. It was extremely dry, over seasoned, overcooked, and overall tasted like it had been sitting out for hours. The fries were also cold and stale. I gave this feedback to the waiter, and the manager then showed up and talked to us about it, agreeing that the fries did not look good. The worst part about all of this is how overpriced the food is. The bill for 4 drinks, 2 lobster rolls, & 2 apps was over $150. They took off 1 round of drinks from the bill because of the feedback (totaling $26, less money than one of the lobster rolls) which was kind but not ideal. I will not be going back, and will not be recommending to anyone. On the bright side, the staff were kind. read more

Recently we ordered take out from Decklyn's. Two items: smoked wings and ceviche. When we got home and opened up the smoked wing box, we were a bit disappointed in the small size of the wings, however there was a nice smoke fragrance and they looked tasty. That's about as far as it got. The wings were way over done, and although I was hungry, I was unable the force myself to chew the dry and leathery wings. At $14 dollars, or about $2 per half wing, even if they were properly prepared it is overpriced. On a brighter note the tuna ceviche was fairly good, although the cube shaped chunks made it look like diced ham, not very visually appealing. read more

We ended up at Decklyn's because it was the only available reservation for Easter brunch in the entire area (Cape Ann and Boston included), and we're so glad we found it! The restaurant is still in a soft-open phase but the food was great and the service even better. Highlights for us were the fried Ipswich clam appetizer--lightly breaded, perfectly fried, super fresh, tasty clams--and the key lime pie for dessert. The location overlooking the harbor is fantastic, and there is plenty of seating, including an outdoor bar that looks like it will be a perfect spot to spend a summer afternoon. We're excited to come back and try everything else on the menu--this might be the restaurant's "trial run," but it still knocked it out of the park! read more

Very unique take on American cuisine, incredibly hospitable staff and a wonderfully curated cocktail menu. Everything I have ordered I absolutely loved. My first time I ordered the mussels in the curry sauce- perfectly balanced sweet and spicy with buttered and toasted bread. My second time I ordered I had the shishito peppers with the street corn (and the mussels again). I also highly recommend the shrimp cocktail. Delicious jumbo shrimp with a well rounded cocktail sauce. And finally, I'm currently eating the ramen with pork belly. I have been patiently waiting for somewhere to do ramen here in town and I am not disappointed. So awesome to see something new and refreshing here in Gloucester. Cozy interior and an incredible deck with live music. Also shout out to the hard working staff who somehow pulled together a new restaurant in this climate. 10/10 recommend! read more

Great food, not enough-peak-season, peak-mealtime waitstaff. Loud inside, quiet outside, on the marina. Expect to wait longer than your neighbors (without water, bread or crackers) to order and be served if you're seated alone at a table at a peak time. My big beautiful lunch bowl of a decent serving of haddock came with an enormous number (12? more?) of tiny roasted potatoes of multiple natural colors, on a perfect sauce of essentially lobster bisque, and a garnish of arugula with some olive oil and quite a lot of coarsely ground salt. (Good thing I love salt.) Unfortunately, instead of the expected and menu-listed baked crumbled Ritz cracker topping with a smidge of butter, the haddock came with a tasteless unseasoned pure-white bread crumb topping, with no browning or toastiness. And instead of an "arugula salad," which I guess I'd expected in as large a proportion or larger than the potatoes, the bowl came with maybe half a cup of arugula. (It was more like the proportions of a burger with lettuce and tomato, with its lettuce and tomato on the side.) I was expected to pay for "a little more" of the greens. I'll hit my local farmers' market next week for a bagful. But hey, I asked for an expensive lemon wedge for my fish and got some of those free of charge.
