i walked by a zillion times and thought it was a student dive with awful food. how wrong i was, i found out, last night! We went in there after trying to go someplace else nearby which was closed. Saw the sign that said, "vegan" so we knew we could find something good. Vegan pizza is usually totally gross due to the melted plastic, i mean, fake cheese! But they use a homemade tofu "cheese" that is quite nice! Excellent crust and sauce and some exceptional vegan mushroom ravioli as well. Some belgian triples on tap to top it off for a nice meal. and even better, great service! All questions were answered in a very friendly manner, one question was met with an uncertain look, followed by a smile and "i am not sure, let me go find out" and a moment later, he returned with the answer. I wasn't impressed with this place. I came here with a friend to watch the Carolina game last week. Place was nice. I like the ambience. We ordered our pizza. However, it wasn't what I expected. There was not a lot of toppings on the pizza; we had a half hawaiian and half cheese. The cheese amount was decent. There was only 3 to 4 pineapples and ham on a slice. Ingredients seemed to be freshed. For example, the pineapples were good, but not the typical ones that are used at other pizza places. You can get your pizza on a GLUTEN FREE CRUST!! Oh my god, a real pizza place, with lots of pizza options, selling gluten free pizza AND it's not a huge chain! The only thing better would be gluten-free pizza my way by the slice. I'm gluten and lactose intolerant, and soy-sensitive; I know you are wondering how I could possibly enjoy pizza this way, but the BLT pizza lacks nothing when you subtract the cheese, I promise. Pizza with heart! Not only is the food great, but the people are, too. The staff is friendly, the customers are there to have a good time, and the owner spends a good amount of time in the restaurant. It's a cozy, homey place to eat pizza, drink beer, and relax-- with friends or by yourself. Tons of vegetarian options, and several different styles of pizza. Unless it is just a little while before closing, they will make you a custom pizza even if you only want a single slice. The slices are fairly thin, but thicker than a typical New York style. Everything is done just right-- these people know what they're doing around pizza. Don't go in expecting a gourmet, Pizzaiolo-style experience, and you'll be more than pleased. It's the perfect place to bring your family or kids, since there's something for everyone. The beers are excellent, too! New and rotating selections, with the occasional rare find on tap. Sports bar, social atmosphere, close to Shattuck. Total win... for amenities, location and socializing. But honestly, this is not the best pie we've had... for the price. We've tried the regular and the gluten-free pizzas hear (one of each) and found them to be lacking character. Mind you, this was a to-go order and so it wasn't oven-fresh when we dug in, but the rubbery cheese and the bland crusts were very unexpected. Happy to go else where, I'm sure their product is better served at the table with a pitcher of bew, a game and friends cheering on the last play. This place had one racist customer (later learned it was not an employee). I had to leave because I was texting my wife and some white guy started to argue for no particular reason...I'm shocked that I live in berkeley with these kind of racist people. Sad ****After my initial review the owner contacted me immediately asking for more information. He not only looked into this complaint/concern but found the individual that was behaving this way. I was impressed with his professionalism and how he handled the situation. I can say he has good ethical business practices. Man this place is a Berkeley experience. I came here to watch the Oscars and I loved the effect of like 5 screens, not-surround-sound-but-close. I also really enjoyed the customizable NY style pizza. The clientele ranges from college students in love to disgruntled old Berkelelian men proclaiming the apocalypse is near. One guy told me about the great Oscar conspiracy. I believe him. The pizza is really good. I think so, but I'm a vegetarian. The lady let me borrow her charger so that was really nice. The cider was AMAZING. I'm not a beer on tap person but people seemed to be slurping that shit up so get on it. All in all, Bobby G's is a grand place for a grand time and has the feel of being in a restaurant without the sleazy feeling of being in a bar but still with weird/sometimes sleazy people. The food is pretty good and I've sampled a decent cross section of some of the regular pizza, fried pizza and pasta dishes. Atmosphere is relaxed and weekends feature live music. The meatlover's pizza that we had was good in all respects besides the fact that it was too salty. Geez, that's a shame. Four stars if they fix this issue. Pizza is religious to me. Service is decent, atmosphere is casual, a good place to bring your mates. The salads were very, very good however. Like, I would go here for just the salad. Bobby G's is probably my favorite bar/restaurant to hang out at in Berkeley. The place is a New York style pizzeria that doubles as a laid back bar. They have several (around six) good beers on tap (for me the most important is the constant inclusion of Russian River's Pliny the Elder) and many others by the bottle. They also have a decent selection of wine. Pizza is very good and made with high quality and often organic ingredients. I only take one star off because it can occasionally take quite awhile to get your food. The atmosphere at Bobby G's is pretty great with a perfect level of lighting, a very friendly staff (Robert, the co-owner, typically mans the bar), and a perfect background noise level. Free wi-fi and a couple of HDTVs running sports and news finish off the place. They are also a green business and take many steps to strive towards this goal. Stop by for a pint and a slice sometime and get to know the folks at one of the best places in town. read more

As part of the Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival, Bobby G's hosted various performers. They normally do not have live music but we were told they are applying for a zoning license. The music was good. They have to work on seating because the layout is not very good for viewing the performance. The menu tries to be trendy but I found the food fairly unmemorable. The service was a bit disorganized, you can either order at the counter, at the bar or at your table. Thus, the person who delivers your drink is not the person who took the order, they wander around and around looking for your number. My ice tea was warm whereas my pizza was cold. the boyfriend and i had late night cravings for pizza, which were probably contaminated with a need to procrastinate cleaning the house before his parents arrive. at 1024pm in albany, our choices were limited... except for bobby g's. we arrived at 1040pm and the place was pretty packed with undergrads (10% off) and berkeley miscellany. it's a casual place with a sports bar portion, free wifi (altho i'm not sure why you'd choose to spend yoru afternoon online at a pizza parlor?) and ample seating. we got the house beer on tap ($6, pretty good), a small mushroom and sausage ($16), and a vegan slice with carmelized onions & mushrooms ($2.75+$0.50*2). the slice had a breadier crust, which we preferred; the ny style pizza had an odd tasteless floury crust = pass..... i can grade the pizza by component: crust: 2/5; too floury and yeasty; unable to fold bc it is too stiff toppings: 3/5; ample; fresh sausage is a plus, tasteless mushrooms are not sauce: 2/5, tastes canned "soy" cheese blend: sparse, kind of liquidy, tasteless; i should have asked for no cheese served: very warm; this is not a pizza that would taste good cold condiments provided: pizza peppers, parm, salt & pepper grinder... check, check, & check; hot sauce, bonus other important details: price: 2/5, i've had better for cheaper service: 3/5, average; order at the front, seat yourself; they did not rush us out of the restaurant, tho, even tho it was really close to closing time menu: lots and lots of vegetarian & vegan options ** they've expanded the menu from what's printed on the board, but what's online looks updated** i think for pizza cravings, we'll still hit up lanesplitters (which is closer to us anyhow) but this was definitely a viable alternative. oh, and the bonus ipad sighting from the guy next to us saved us a trip to the crowded apple store. read more

Pear hard cider = amazing! Stuffed breadstick was nice, though we originally ordered it because we saw some people eating what appeared to be an interesting plate of marinara sauce and thought the breadstick was the only thing that could have been it. Anyways it's very good for sharing because the breadsticks are cut into small pieces that you can easily stab with a fork and dip into the marinara sauce. Baby greens salad was very tasty as well. But if you are going to order something like a pasta that may come with a free side salad, you don't need to get an extra! Sometimes they don't ask if you want a side salad, or you might deny yourself of veggies because you don't want to pay extra... but it's free!! Bonita L. and I split the Penne with Roasted Garlic, Pancetta, and Arugula. I really liked the arugula and the pasta magically stayed warm until the very end which was very pleasant. Also it comes with bread which we dipped in the leftover marinara sauce from the breadsticks. Also good. Oh also we had some bites of the molten chocolate cake which was GREAT! It had a hint of raspberry flavor (chocolate and raspberry = best combo ever) and it was all warm and gooey. PLUS it came with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream (I'm convinced it was vanilla bean because it tasted better than regular vanilla). The hot and cold went very well together. This was really good pizza. I got the 1 slice lunch special ($3.50) with once cheese slice and a refillable fountain soda. The salad was good too. Also, they have wifi, which is great because I'm getting kind of bored with only eating pastries and coffee when I actually leave the house to work, and it's big enough that you don't feel like a creep if you are taking up space with your computer and your empty pizza plate. The atmosphere is great. Thick organgy tiles line the floor, bright colors on the wall but local art and great classic black and white photos on the wall. With that this place is clean and I mean CLEAN! All the tables are neatly together, the counters immaculate, just everything is perfect. With tv's playing sports and great classic rock music playing you can't be board - even if you are here alone. The pizza is pretty good. I got a standard mushroom slice. The slice is pretty darn big and you won't leave hungry. The crust is thin, the toppings are hefty and the mushrooms I got are thick and very fresh. While not amazing it's pretty darn good. They also host a decent tap selection of beers and bottle beers. The small bar here is a cute addition as well. Gives the place a cafe/pizzaria/small restaurant type feel. It's just comfy, cozy and a great place to sit and enjoy some time. The FREE WIRELESS definitely helps as well. Oh and the guy who helped me was super friendly, even making sure I got my wireless working - just adding a great element to an already nice welcoming environment. read more

Bobby G's HH, while great with beer, pizza, and salad specials, did one spectacular thing for me: introduced me to the best vegan caesar salad EVER! To all you haters out there, yes, this does exist, and the version here is fantastic. With chicken added, it comes out to about $10 which isn't the cheapest, but if that hurts your wallet, there's always happy hour. My first time in Berkeley last night because I was presenting to some students at Berkeley. Afterwards we were looking for a yummy place to eat not too far from campus before heading home to the city. We found Bobby G's via recomendations on a Yelp search on my Blackberry. Overall it was quite tasty - and better than most pizza places I've been to in SF - although nothing on the West Coast can really compare to NY pizza. we ordered the sweet pepper pesto pizza and one of their signature pan fried pizzas - the sausage onion pepper version. The pan fried pizza was a different twist and the crust was yummy. Not overly greasy like you might expect but flaky crispy almost like phyllo dough. That was my favorite one. The sweet pepper pesto pizza needed a little bit of a kick, probably because of the lacking tomato sauce but it was a little bland. However the crust was good and the ingredients on both pizzas were really fresh. I would probably try a tomato based sauce pizza on the regular pie next time. Overally it was a yummy dinner in an enjoyable little venue. It reminded me of something that would be in a small town, but with better, fresher ingredients. Good wine and beer list too! read more

I really want to like Bobby G's Pizzeria. It was full of happy people, it was buzzing with activity, and was located near the happening corner of University Avenue and Shattuck. When I walked in, there were peeps eating, drinking at the bar, and watching games on the flat screens. What is there not to like?? The ridiculous long wait for my personal sized pizza...we're talking about a 45 minute wait. I ordered a small Roasted Chile Pepper Pie, which was advertised as being spicy chili hot. Since I love my food with a hint of pain, I was looking forward to trying this. The guy who took my order was nice enough which blindsided me of what's to come. I must have waited a lifetime for my pizza! My friend's pizza arrived after a 40-minute wait with mine nowhere in site. He didn't want to start eating but unknowingly just how much longer I had to wait for mine, I told him to proceed. I waited 45 minutes for my pizza to finally arrive and unfortunately it wasn't all that. Sure it was spicy but there were so much jalapenos that it killed all the other flavors of the other ingredients. In fact the entire pizza was a flaming diuretic; there was nothing special about it. It almost reminded me of frozen pizza you get at the grocery store. The pizza itself was not upsetting but that crazy long wait just grind on my nerves all night. To add salt to the wound, there was a large party of dudes sitting behind me (six guys) that ordered their large pizzas way after us and...you guessed it, they received their 3 or 4 large pizzas way before we did! Do large pizzas have more clout than small ones? At $15.75 for the small, I felt like I deserved a large pizza and the green light to cut in line! I have never ever waited so long for a mediocre pizza; it was particularly upsetting especially when you're hungry and late arrivals are getting their food before you. No explanations, no apologies...just dump and walk away. Here's the funny part: twice did somebody else's order arrived at our table. The party sitting next to us was wondering why their food and drinks were going to our table instead of theirs. The staff just didn't have their act together that evening. I read other Yelpers' reviews and they pretty much said the same thing. You either love this place or hate it. The ones who were not too crazy about Bobby G's echoed the same sentiment: non-existent service and unacceptable long wait for food. Unfortunately that was all I remembered that evening. Too many negatives for me to return anytime soon. Note: the owner had the gall to leave me a "that's your problem" message. Well sorry but my experience at your establishment was poor; I tell it like it is. Also regarding 50% food cost, the owner doesn't have a clue. I work from home a lot and enjoy going to Cafes to get work done. I have yet to settle on a favorite, so I often end up walking around Berkeley searching for just the right one (and wasting time no doubt). It was on such a cafe-search that I ended up at Bobby G's. On the particular afternoon I was looking for a cool new cafe, it seemed every single one in the downtown area was stuffed to the gills with students and nomadic workers. I'm quickly learning there are good times to cafe-hunt and bad - 1:30PM is bad because the after lunch crowd is trying to get all that work they promised to complete finished by the end of the day. So, I saw that Bobby G's had free wi-fi and I was sold. The service was pretty good - the young lady working the counter was really sweet and did a great job to make people feel welcome and comfortable. I got a Mocha which was a bit sweeter than I prefer, but it was alright. The pizza was fine - I only got a slice of cheese so I can't really judge. Actually, this gets a solid 3.5 from me. YOU MUST KNOW THAT THE PIZZA HERE IS HUMONGOUS!! Unfortunately, the boyfriend and I did not know this and we ordered two whoops. Everyone around us ordered by the slice and we were pretty much the only two people with whole pies, not to mention TWO. This review is long overdue because it's actually been over four months since we ate here. Honestly I don't even remember which two pizzas we got but they were pretty darn delicious and affordable (I think less than $20 per pizza and they're like extra large). I randomly found myself at Bobby G's one rainy Saturday night a few months ago. Since then, I've probably been back about 2 to 3 times per week. The pizza dominates all pizza places in Berkeley, hands down, and that's including Cheeseboard. Robert has an excellent grasp of what a true slice of pizza is supposed to be--as if he was born in Naples himself. The sausage and mushroom is especially delectable. As is the sweet pepper pizza. Actually everything I've had there has been pretty fantastic. Robert is always experimenting with new combinations and even new perspectives on the pizza--imagine a deep fried, super thin crust pizza treat! Brilliant! I'm an italian kid from northern New Jersey. I'm not sure what kind of creedance that adds to my opinion, but I do know this; when I first moved to California I was extremely dissappointed with pizza. Even the famous Zachary's Pizza did nothing for me. I finally found an establishment that understands what pizza is. Bobby G's offers a slice that's meticulously crafted to flourish with taste when it hits your tongue. The panini's are also fantastic. The baby greens salad is both monstrous and wonderfully appealing to the taste buds. I kind of want one right now, now that I think about it. Robert and his staff are some of the friendliest and most entertaining people in Berkeley. I often go there just to enjoy some fine pints of Anchor Steam. There's even an impressive Guiness machine that shoots sound vibrations through the glass, stimulating the malt and dispersing it into a perfect fade. It's both visually impressive, and of course ehances the consistency of each sip. I'd highly advise you check out the website and see which blues musicians are going to play each night. Sometimes they have duos of base and electric blues guitarists--other times full bands. The volume of the music is always at the perfect decibel to allow for sufficient jamming as well as friendly discussion. No yelling to talk to your friends--Jupiter anyone? They have all the sports channels you could ever want, including the NBA package. Go there to drink beer and watch games. Go there to jam out to the eclectic musicians that frequent the Bobby G's stage. Go there to hang out with Robert, one of the coolest restaurant owner's I've ever encountered. Awesome beer on tap, their green salads are delish, and the mushroom ravioli is flavorgasmic. The pizza is ok, not cravable, but good. Some weekdays when work is getting me down, I decide to stop in for the happy hour for a pint and slice for $5. It gets me through the day. The owner/manager/central authority figure is always there at the bar, which gives it a really authentic local feel. Once he came out to talk to us about our pizza. There are always sports on too, but it doesn't feel like a sports bar. Definitely a must-try. read more

Their mostly organic NY-style pizza is solid when it isn't vegetarian, though when I just want pizza I go to Pie in the Sky. The beer taps are good if conventional -- the usual Anchor/Sierra/Lagunitas suspects, without any of the supercool micros you can get at Lanesplitter, but at happy hour prices ($10 a pitcher from 4-7 pm weekdays) I'll only complain a little bit. There's enough seating for groups, and Mr G. (I presume) is friendly -- what more could you ask for? Answer: Racer 5, Pliny the Elder and/or Old Rasputin on tap, please. When it comes to pizza, i am picky. I LOVE pizza. Nothing puts a smile on my face faster than a thin crispy/flaky crust pizza from a hot wood or coal fired oven. I'm pleased to say that Boby G's pizza comes close to achieving my goal of the perfect pizza. I can't say that they use wood or coal to heat their pizza's (i didnt go into the kitchen), but whatever they used works very well. My friends and i ordered two pizzas. One was called the Meat Lovers and the other was some hawaiin style pizza with ham and pineapple but with the addition of a mango puree. I have to say, my preferred pizza was the meatlover but the other one was quite good. The mango puree was an interesting addition but it worked out well. In addition, we went during the evening when they had live music - blues - playing. It was very good. I personally really like blues because it reminds me of my father and my uncle who used to take me to blues bars when i was young. While i had a coke, they drank beer and relived their time in San Francisco during the 60's & 70's. The only downside is that, though the owner might argue he intended to have live music there all the time, the space wasnt acoustically set up for it. When music plays, you cant hear anything but the vibrating strings of the guitar. I suppose it could be worse... All that together puts Bobby G's on a good rating with me. read more

My bf and I didn't want to order a whole pizza so we had a la carte slices of pepperoni. I usually don't mind thin crust pizza but it was so oily the only flavor to the pizza was cheese and oil = yuck. Decent sized slices for the price but taste wise I've had better. For some reason, tables and chairs were available in only half the restaurant. Maybe they used the other side of the restaurant as a dance floor the previous night? Shrugs. My bf mentioned this was one of the only places in Berk that shows football which is why we came here so we didn't mind sitting at the bar. There were customers at the bar who trying to read but looked annoyed that people were cheering the games. You're at a bar/pizzeria...not the library.. What did you expect.. Good pizza, excellent and fast service (lightning fast, I would say given it was a Friday evening), discounts for starving students, and a pleasant and lively ambiance. Compared to other Berkeley pizza joints, the pizza is nothing extraordinary (based on my own experiences), but because of Bobby G's location, quality of service, and atmosphere, I'd come back. As for the food specifically, the Margherita pizza was good, as was the triple mushroom. The goat cheese gave the mushroom pizza an unexpected zing and the different types of mushrooms were all in turn given a chance to shine. Bruschetta was very bland tasting--skip. Used to be best pizza in the Bay Area, but has become inconsistent since they updated things a few years back. Seems to be more about the sports games than the pizza these days. read more
