We went on account of the Chronicle's article from some yrs back. My husband is from the East Coast and is constantly looking for good, thin crust pizza. We had the sausage and mushrooms. Update: I went back to Bobby G's again and, while placing my order for two pies, mentioned that we would like them to be ready and served as close together time-wise as possible. After the woman taking my order consulted with the kitchen she came back and said that shouldn't be a problem. Sure enough our pies were served about a minute apart (and they were delish as usual). I live a couple blocks down Shattuck, so probably drove by Bobby G's at least a hundred times before going there. Well, I finally convinced my girlfriend to drop by the place one Sunday afternoon . . . . . what a local find that was! I actually don't even like pizza due to the fact I hate being full with cheese and crust and stuff. But, I can be convinced to go to Zachary's pizza on occasion simply due to its renown, but the only thing I like ordering is the thin crust version. Well, lo-and-behold, after tasting Bobby G's NY style (it's a thin crust type) pizza, I frigging love having pizza now and have not been back to Zach's since! They serve this Pepper Pizza that is out of this world vegi - even though I am personally a meat lover big time. It has about 4-5 different types of fresh peppers, including pasillas and jalepenos with a chipotle cream base that is out of this world. The crust has always been perfectly done for me at just ever so slightly crisp to the bite. They apparently use the same produce distributor as the high-end restaurant "Downtown" a couple of blocks away. So, any complaints from the other yelpers regarding freshness can be safely dismissed. And then the beer . . . . fresh IPA and pilsner on tap (and a couple of others). Chimay, Duvel in bottle and several other Belgian types. This is my kind of place let me tell you because I drink huge amounts of the stuff. Let me tell you THIS IS NO fly-by-night pizza joint serving slices to drunken college freshman. Rather it's a really good local joint that I am pleased to visit each and every time. The owner/operator is really cool, takes pride in the quality of his product, and is striving to bring this little section of Berkeley back on the map. I plan on visiting Bobby's G's for a while to come!! Con's? Better lighting, perhaps a more stylish paintjob inside. It's a bit bleak and could be warmed up a bit for sure. read more

this meal was a real let down. i was hungry, and couldn't wait to eat. we ordered the caprese salad and a small pizza. first, they got our salad order wrong - and minutes later, when they came back with the caprese, i couldn't believe what they'd charged us $6.95 for: 4 small slices of tomato with four even smaller slices of mozzarella cheese. ridiculous. then, it was almost an hour after we'd put our order in when our pizza finally arrived. it was steaming hot, and tasty enough, but in no way memorable. two stars for being overrated, overpriced, and overdue. as we left, a band was getting ready to play some *live* music. maybe this place is all about the atmosphere - since the food and service, i'm sorry to say, are far less than stellar. read more

Good place, and the kind of Italian restaurant that my wife and I were looking for in the east bay. We'd lived in the inner Richmond in San Francisco for years and grew fond of Giorgio's on Clement. It's a reasonably priced Italian restaurant with red checkerboard tablecloths and good pizza that draws families and local soccer teams. Bobby Gs doesn't have the red checkerboard tablecloths, and I wasn't particularly fond of the three TV screens, but it's definitely reasonably priced, with good pizza, and it's very kid friendly. This place is great for what it is. It has a big dining area, a wide selection of toppings and choices on pizza, and a convenient location in the center of Berkeley. However, if its comes down to the pure flavor and freshness of the food, many NY pizza takeout joins like Gioia and Emilia's is better. but you can really cannot take a group of people to either of these other joints. So it is what it is. Bobby G is a solid option for pizza and you won't be disappointed. read more

We came here because someone in our party has a gluten allergy and I just want to say she loved her pie. I was less than impressed with the pizza (Again, I am a profound pizza snob) although it was edible. My gnocchi was sort of pasty and dry. The green salad was pretty delish. This is one of the BEST pizzerias in Berkeley!!! Their pizza is great, really hit the spot for a New Yorker like me who misses a good slice. They have a great vegan pizza too. Their beer selection is good. They are the only restaurant in the area that I know of to stock Pliny the Elder on tap, which is my boyfriends favorite beer. Yum! I went when it wasn't crowded with sports being televised or anything so it was real nice and chill! The food is superb and I love the presentation of the colorful Crostini Sampler and they were each very good - I LOVED the bruschetta best! This is a very laid back place from what I can tell. I came Bobby G's just because we were hungry for pizza but the other pizza place on Shattuck we wanted to go was closed. So the expectation may have been unfairly too high for this place. The place looked clean, and people (eating and working) seemed to be having a good time (expectation got higher) when I stepped into the restaurant. We ordered Caesar salad. I give a credit for crisp lettuce, but for $6 it can be done a little more than a mix of lettuce, few stale croutons and dressing. Our choice of pizza was pesto. I understood their effort of making pesto sauce themselves using fresh ingredients, but something was missing..... something called a 'flavor'???? Sorry to say that next time we will make sure the other joint on Shattuck would be open. read more

A little pricey, but a great atmosphere to hang out and they a reliable, delicious gluten-free pizza and beer (also gluten-free!). They're one of the few places that get their gluten-free crusts from Mariposa bakery in Oakland, and it's the best gluten-free pizza crust I've had. read more

I was rolling around Berkeley looking for a place for a quick lunch. I saw the green awning with "vegan" and "internet" and quickly turned my fixie around to check this place out. I only saw a 2-3 vegan things handily labeled on the extensive menu, I got the mushroom and spinach ravioli. I guess I missed the whole soy cheese pizza option. $11.50 is a bit steep for lunch, I was expecting a bit more from the food. The sauce was incredibly garlicy and had little tomato taste. The raviolis were nothing special, I would guess they were not made on-site. The staff was friendly and the internet worked decently. Now that I understand how the pizza with vegan cheese works, I will be back sometime to try that. read more

Blah. I was SO disappointed in this pizza! I was pretty excited after reading the reviews, so I ordered a slice of Sicilian, a slice of NY, and a whole Neapolitan pie. Nothing was bad, but everything was so bland. Salt, parmesan and red pepper helped, but to me those are the signs that the pizza is just no good. Crust was too thick and flavorless (on ALL the pies!). Cheese and sauce were just nothing special. I *might* return for the happy hour, since the deals sound tempting, but never again will get carry-out here. I'd much, much rather spend the extra money at Gioia. Or starve. read more

This isn't your average pizza place- they have good sandwiches and salads too. Mostly the atmosphere is what I love most, and the owner is so friendly and welcoming. On the plus side- it's very vegan friendly too. read more

not sure where the overall 4 stars came from... or maybe bobby g's just isn't up to my sf standards? hmm... anyway, this place is alright. if i go back ill probably get pizza because the pasta was just mediocre. whatever my friend had was apparently really good though haha. service is alright, but the guy almost refused to give my friend the student discount (ok, we dont live in berkeley but we're still students!) which was pretty weak. other than that he was chill though. i like the huge windows, not so much the tv's on the walls though. also love the wicker chairs. their salad dressing was good- reminded me of la bouange's. um yeah i dont know, it was alright but maybe i just didnt get what they're known for? stop by if youre as hungry off the train as we were. otherwise, im sure theres some better places to hit up nearby. read more

Very good Neopolitan pizzeria; they also have Sicilian style pizza but didn't try that one. Tried their cheese, veggie, and pesto. Pesto pizza is recommended. 4 out of 5 only because it wasn't firewood-oven baked pizza. read more

Only three words needed: PLINY THE ELDER this place has it on tap so that's really all I need. But the pizza is amazing too, especially the thin crust. The owner roams around asking how people are doing and how is the food, many tvs always have the best games on Only down side is that it can get pretty noisy. A coworker of mine had recommended this place so I decided to give it a try this past Monday. I sat at the bar right in front of the flat screen tv showing MNF and looked at what beers they had on tap. I was impressed with their selection of beers, many of which you don't normally find on tap. I settled on a favorite of mine: Mirror Pond Pale Ale (it goes well with pizza). When my gf arrived, she ordered the 1546 black ale which was also very tasty. I could tell right away that Bobby G knew his beer and as the night went on I overheard him raving about the double IPA: Pliny the Elder, he was kind enough to offer us a taste and it made me wish i had ordered it from the start. Very hoppy and flavorful! Oh ya, the pizza, almost forgot .... the pizza was great! Plenty of sauce, plenty of tasty cheese, the toppings (mushrooms, peppers, olives) were fresh and flavorful, and the dough had a good flavor too. The place itself has a nice feel to it. It was obvious that many regulars go there. Sitting at the bar I could hear Bobby G greeting people by name as they entered the place. Bobby G himself was super nice and friendly. With Happy Hour beers, football on the flat screen, and great thin crust pizza, you can't go wrong with Bobby G's. read more

My experience here was terrible, I'm afraid. I stopped in here for just a slice on my way home from work, thought I would check it out. My almost- $5.00 pizza on a paper plate was thrown at me by the guy behind the counter, and the veggie pizza itself didn't taste like much of anything. Rudeness + bland pizza = 1 star. read more

Definitely meh. The crowd at thebar mid-afternoon was pleasant and chatty, and the bartender was efficient and polite, but the pizza tasted like supermarket frozen and the fountain soda was flat and weak. WiFi access is a plus, but sadly there isn't much to recommend the pizza. read more
