Best place to eat in an airport! We had a lot of time before our flight and this place was right next to our gate. The restaurant is very nicely decorated. It's classy and upscale. Lots of crown moulding and beautiful wood trimming. The menu is very big! It's great to have options when dining in the airport! We were sat pretty quickly considering there was a line waiting to ask for a seat. We were sat right next to the kitchen which I wasn't too crazy about but I don't think my husband even noticed. He ordered the seared tuna for an entree and the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. I ordered the salmon for lunch. My husband LOVED his tuna! It was perfect. I really liked my salmon too. It was a delicious, healthy choice. Set on a bed of wilted spinach and came with a lemon wedge, it was very tasty. We each had a glass of wine as well. Our bill was a little over $200 after tip, so it can be a bit pricey but we would definitely go here again. The only issue I had was that after finishing my wine you could see that it was dirty. It still had red wine stains in it. I used to work in the restaurant industry and I know the glasses just go into a dishwasher; but as an upscale restaurant you have to check the glasses! The one saving grace of this place is the bartender -i can't recall her name, perhaps Micheline or Michaela. She is such a warm, friendly and attentive person and deserves a raise. I cannot say the same for another bartender with red hair and a bun who was super rude, and ignored me and all other customers many times. Instead of trying to do any work she was constantly chatting with another coworker. I know there's a labor shortage but i just felt it was so unfair that one woman was working so hard while two others did nothing! I really can't imagine what people think when they come through this terminal at JFK and see the poor food options and have never been to the city. The restaurants here (Bobby Van's included) are not representative of the amazing culinary scene of NYC and it's really quite a shame. My wife (originally from Queens) and I came through JFK on a recent trip to Europe and needed to grab dinner before our flight. We ended up eating at Bobby Van's and it definitely could have been better. The service was very, very slow and thankfully we had plenty of time before our flight. We ordered two turkey clubs and the sandwiched themselves were pretty good overall, but the fries were greasy and not appetizing. Airport food lives in the shadows of the free market. The food scene exists only in a subterranean realm most of us prefer to avoid. Our reviews hold no power. At least some level of disappointment is implied. We grade on a curve that strains like an Olympic power lifter to hold our gloomy and greasy meals to a passing standard. Bobby Vans lives in this world. And it will outlive us all here. Once you have accepted this bleak domain, you can, however, find some light. For instance, the Caesar salad is fine. It even has a good Parmesan ratio. The order of fries come in a good portion, and can, upon request, be accompanied with a spicy mayo. And the servers are truly trying. Also, if you added steak to your salad, it actually comes in a more respectable portion size than you might expect. You should, however, order it at least one to two levels of done beyond what you would like. I asked for medium rare and it came out like one of those woolly mammoths that are discovered in the Artic or Siberia. Not alive, but not far off. And very much in need of a thaw. (Photo included) I hate sending back food. I asked for it to be cooked (more?), and the server (who truly was helpful and quick) recognized the issue immediately sent it back to the kitchen. Bobby Vans is a fine place for a drink. If you want food, they can provide it. However, whatever they are using to thaw/heat their food is probably running a little low on battery. Priority Pass offers fewer and fewer options in JFK these days, lounge-wise, but I've been able to use the benefit at Bobby Van's a few times when flying internationally out of Terminal 8. I probably wouldn't order steak here but I've been perfectly happy to get a cocktail and plate of fries (something that could ostensibly be called 'girl dinner'). Service is generally efficient, friendly if not warm, and professional. They know that some people might be in a hurry and some people are ready to linger on a longer stopover, and they seem to gauge the vibe accordingly. Would I come here if it weren't my 'only' option in this terminal for Priority Pass? Definitely not! But the cocktails are made fairly potently and the fries are on the soggier side of acceptable, certainly remediated by ketchup and some generous slugs of Tabasco (try it!). read more

We came to this restaurant which is in an airport since we had extra time to spare until our boarding time. Also, they take priority pass. We arrived to one entrance and stood there waiting because there was a sign saying "please wait to be seated". We stood there for few minutes. However, all the servers passed us and didn't seat us or said anything to us. I was confused because there were plenty of seats and it wasn't that busy. Then I saw another entrance and people got seated from that entrance. We were pretty upset that the workers there completely ignored us. So we quickly moved to the other entrance. By the time we got seated they said breakfast just ended and that we had to wait for lunch. We weren't happy with the first impression or service because we could have order breakfast if they didn't ignore us. Therefore we had to wait over 30 minutes until lunch time. Many servers passed by us without saying anything, apparently you had to use the other entrance and nobody decided to help to inform us. This is one of those cases of being stuck in a bad JFK terminal for American Air international and having one option to eat. No one would ever go out if their way to come here. It's where servers look like they're working the grace yard shift at 7 pm. Bobby Van's in terminal 8 is to New Yorkers, what Jerry Springer was to Americans. A necessary evil. Interestingly they are on theme with Terminal 8 JFK, which is a real international embarrassment to New Yorkers to begin with. Why are they a necessary evil, you ask? Because they are only one of two seated restaurants in the whole damn terminal. The food is in general, mid and pricey. I have dined here before and the burger was nothing to write home about. This was also when they accepted priority pass with my bank. FYI, if you bank with American Express or chase sapphire, you don't get the $28 credit anymore. For very good reason for what it's worth because they are simply not up-to standards. I should have taken this as a sign and walked away this time. But no, with a child in tow, we were looking for a quick meal and to get on with our lives. We were seated immediately, our orders were taken by a seemingly nice Bangladeshi man. He was doing the absolute most to ensure all the Caucasian patrons were well served. Now, this wasn't something that stood out to us until we noticed that we were one of two Asian families who were still waiting on our meals for 45 minutes. My child was starving at this point, I got up to check on our food with one of the wait staff, only for our brown brethren waving from afar for us to leave. With a big smile on his face, saying we won't be served. And so we left. Without paying for our one beer. The racism here is palpable and laughable. TLDR; came here to use my CSR priority pass benefit with a guest. Service was a bit slow, food was decent for airport food, but if I weren't redeeming my priority pass benefit then I wouldn't have come. I came on a weekday for dinner before a flight out of JFK. I have priority pass through Chase so I was able to use it there, but at the entrance they noted that Capital One and AE priority pass users wouldn't be able to use the benefit there. I brought a guest and we were seated immediately. I got a Turkey burger purely because I wanted avocado in my burger which ended up only being so so. My guest got the regular burger, and I definitely should have gotten the same but just added avocado. The burger was really thick and hefty while the Turkey burger was skinny and small. Bobby Vans was the perfect spot for a meal in between flights. Located directly after security on the right hand side in Terminal 8. They accept priority pass and give a credit of $28 per person. The decor and setup of this place was really nice. Bright big chandelier type lights in a dark area so it really sticks out. It seems small at first but there is a big seating area in the back of the restaurant. The service was good, the server was nice and came around often. I ordered the steak tips sandwich and my wife got the shrimp scampi. The sandwich was great, juicy with a lot of flavor. I do wish the steak pieces were smaller though. Mine were pretty big chunks and it was difficult to eat. It was also massive, could definitely split it with someone if you wanted to. I would definitely order again. Wife said she loved the shrimp as well and would order again. They were both $30 each. If you have the priority pass this is the perfect place to stop at on a layover or if you are early for your flight. Will definitely come back anytime I am in JFK. Can any airport serve good food? I travel a lot, I like to have a sit down meal at the airport if time allows. Well, like most airport meals I've had lately, this one missed the mark. The food was not good. The dining room was nice and large and made you forget you are at the airport. The service was just ok. My ahi tuna and rice was terrible. The rice was cheap enriched boil in the bag rice that tasted like plastic. The ahi tuna was overcooked and sliced incorrectly, it was almost inedible. My daughter got a Caesar chicken salad, which she said was ok. She got a side order of greasy gross French fries. I left hungry with a stomach ache. Want to waste a hundred dollars? My husband had the chicken with raisins and sweet potatoes. This dish was tasty and had some West Indian flavoring. The meat was moist and the skin was cooked as it should be, crispy. Service was prompt and courteous. Would recommend and return again - even if we had to pay full price.
