On a road trip we decided to stop for coffee and a light bite. We parked and peeked through the window to see if we even wanted to go in. We walked in and I'm go glad we did. We were greeted warmly by the waitress (I think her name was Meghan). We got coffee which was decent and fountain Diet Coke, pirogies and onion rings. Everything was decent and the portions were pretty big. I agree with a few comments here that the price points of some of the menu items were kinda steep for a no frills diner upstate. This is an older diner that is open 24/7. The food is pretty good, although not as cheap as it used to be, which is to be expected in the current economy, but it is still tasty. I see bad reviews, but it's almost like people go in there with the wrong expectations for a place like this. Red glitter Formica and retro photos of Watervliet history abound. A simple unassuming 24-hour diner on the railroad tracks where everything could go right. And does. For starters, there really is a "Bob" and family waitstaff, warmly welcoming you to their humble establishment. Want your bacon crispy? I always describe mine as "if you dropped it it would shatter". The owner assured me she has a "burn it" button for customers of my ilk. My experience is breakfast for lunch, twice. But, like your typical diner, they have just about everything, anytime. This was once a great spot to eat , fair prices great service however this is not the case now. $25 for a bacon lettuce on wheat with no tomato a single leg bacon egg and cheese which was overcooked not what I had asked for and a small coffee. This place used to be full all of the time and now it's a ghost town. First time checking out this diner and I have to say the food was perfect! We ordered breakfast for lunch which consisted of 3 pancakes, 3 Bacon, 3 sausage, 3 eggs cooked your way and toast. This was a feast fit for a king! Food was cooked to perfection. The service was excellent also, fresh pot of decaf coffee was made for me by our waitress. As for the venue, do not judge it, it's like taking a step back in time. The place is neat and clean for sure and the staff are very friendly. I've ordered from here often. The food is good. Portion sizes are large. I've never had an issue with the quality of the food. One thing that keeps me from giving a five star review is how often they forget to add additional items like dinner rolls, side vegetables, or things like that. They are very inconsistent on that. Bob's Diner is known for one thing which is being open 24 hours a day. These 24/7 diners are a dying breed and Bob's is one of the last of it's kind. Taking this into account, it was 11pm and Bob's was the only thing open. As soon as I walked in, I felt like I was back in the 1990s. If you were to imagine a 24/7 diner, you would imagine Bob's. With that being said, I ordered the hash hound which came with pancakes, corned beef hash, eggs, toast, and home fries. To start, the pancakes were solid. They were the boxed kind, but the pancakes were made well. In the same regard, the corned beef hash was excellent. The hash was flavorful and enjoyable. Moreover, I ordered over easy eggs and they were cooked just right. Not too hard or too runny. On the other hand, the home fries were bland and had no flavor at all. It's as if the kitchen staff had been overthrown by imposters who had never boiled an egg let alone prepare a decent, edible breakfast. Top 5 diner experiences I've ever had. Never left a yelp review before. Felt like I had to because of all the negativity. Food was banging. Came here late night, around midnight. Food- BANGIN. Pancakes doughy, not totally my thing but still good. Sausages were gas. Classic American breakfast- no way to get around it. Ambience was incredible. I'm a local college student and I have not felt more at home in the 6 months that I have spent away than I did in that little diner. Almost made me tear up with the boys. Gave it a chance despite reviews. Eggs Benedict: Hollandaise sauce was inexplicably dry, tasted like it was made from American cheese that had never met an egg yolk. The eggs themselves were overcooked and tasteless, with rubbery whites and dry flaky yolks. Tried the corned beef as well - similarly lifeless. There are plenty of other diners in the Capital Region, and I'll be trying one of those next time I'm craving diner food. read more

I was told that these are what sunny-side-up eggs look like. I called to say they were raw. Apparently, I'm wrong. It is my belief the whites should be cooked through. Well, now I know the world has been doing it wrong all along. Everyone has bad days, so I will give this place another chance. There is a scene in one of my favorite movies, "The Sting," where Robert Redford is sitting in a depression-era diner and is pushing around the "Blue Plate Special" meal on his plate instead of eating it. When the waitress rings up his lunch he tells her "I guess I should have ordered the meatloaf," to which she curtly replies "It isn't any better." That sort of characterizes Bob's Diner. I didn't come here for the food, but I expected to at least have a decent meal in a diner atmosphere. What I found was a run down restaurant with a limited menu (that due to the font was hard to read the optional choices) that seemed to focus on sandwiches and burgers. I heard they did good breakfasts but it was dinner time so I ordered the chicken parm. sandwich and my wife had the hot roast beef. Service was quick and friendly, and soon our food was up. My "sandwich" turned out to be a frozen chicken portion deep fried, with cheese melted on, and placed between two of the softest, thinnest pieces of white bread I have ever seen. Then, chunky tomato sauce was ladled over the very top of the bread. A side of crinkle cut fries finished the plate. I was a bit disappointed as I actually expected a sandwich one could pick up and eat, but this was knife and fork territory. The sauce tasted acidic like canned crushed tomatoes and was the highlight of an otherwise unremarkable dish. I wish my fries were super crispy (nearly burned), but they were cooked normally (or as my wife would like them). I tried my wife's roast beef sandwich and it was okay, though it was drowning in what must have been salty, prepared gravy. Going for broke, we ordered dessert: slices of pre-made apple and lemon meringue pies. Mine was heated upon request and was decent, and my wife's was unremarkable. But why did I go in the first place? Because it is located adjacent to the railroad tracks, and I wanted to see a train while I ate! The diner's interior is decorated with train pictures (some of historic Watervliet and Albany, some just generic art) and I am a train buff so this place has been on my list for a while. All in all, an average meal with friendly staff. I really think breakfast is where they probably shine, and I will definitely be back for that. read more

Decent small, local diner open 24/7. It has its own parking lot on the left-hand side of the diner, so parking is not a problem. When you walk in, the counter is on your left, the dining room is to the back and to the right. Service is usually good, but sometimes it can be slow, or the wait staff can be inattentive. This can be annoying. Make no mistake, this is not a large diner like Alexis, Blue Ribbon , Halfmoon , Tops. or Ambrosia. It is relatively small, with a less extensive menu than some of the larger diners. They always have specials, which are a good choice. Food quality is average, nothing special. Prices are fair. For some reason, whenever I and my friend Sue go to a diner, we seem to end up at Bob's. We drive past other higher rated diners to go there. I'm not sure why we do that. Maybe it's just a familiarity or comfort factor. We like it, and it is our go to small diner. But I can see how other people might not think it's so great.
