My boyfriend and I used to like going here for comfort food, but the last two times we went, we waited almost an hour for our small orders. We get the same thing every time - a corn dog, a large fry, and a hamburger. We even call ahead of time in attempt to get our food faster, and the person on the phone usually says 15 minutes. We show up 20 minutes later to find out they haven't even started our order! We like the food, but not near enough to wait for their horrible service. My boyfriend spoke up and said that we placed an order an hour ago, and the girl working immediately went inside and started mocking him to the other employees. Lunch and quick dinner for four days while doing a cabling job nearby. Bob's. since 1949, has been serving up a rather large menu of quick, roadside fare (and stuff high school kids love, it is right across the street from Fortuna High School) and decent prices and speed. While there I tried the footlong griiled dog smothered in chili (mmmmmm), a standard cheeseburger, a bacon-cheeseburger deluxe (with tomatoes and onions), fries, and onion rings. All good. This isn't In-n-Out, but who is? The atmosphere in the place is great (all locals) and the waitstaff is friendly. If you are on your way to/from Eureka, Fortuna, or parts nearby, you owe it to yourself to drop by Bob's. Been there, got the T-shirt (and a nice t-shirt at that). read more

Fun day out with my fiance and a couple of friends, had a blast. Couldn't find any ice cream shops but a homeless person directed us here. My coffee milkshake was fantastic, the banana splits were a really good size for the price. The only reason this place loses two stars is that my fiance does not like all the banana split toppings they offer...he wanted just hot fudge, but was told that their rules require him to have three different toppings. The high menu prices should more than cover the additional credit card processing fees. The food is really good for an old drive in style restaurant but the portion size is very small for the price you pay. read more

The foot long hot dogs are the best. The employees are very nice. The sodas are way to small and only 1 refill. I truly wish they went back to the original garlic fries. The garlic fries now are made using garlic salt, not the same just cheaper and easier to make. Way to much garlic salt on them. Don't waste money buying garlic fries. The tacos were very good. If you have SIX people behind the counter, it really shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to get a to go order. 6 people that came in & ordered after us got their food & were done eating while we still waited. Well, I waited a year before revisiting this poor excuse for a restaurant, so that the poor service I received would have an opportunity to work itself out, but you still suck. Did I really just pay +$15 for this tiny, mediocre cheeseburger, 3 jalapeno poppers, and some cheese fries? $2.40 of it extra for fricking nacho cheese out of a dispenser to drown my fries? I will NEVER do it again. Last time I intended to give you a chance to explain or make it right, but when I called to complain that you messed up every part of my order other than the milkshake, the little turd that answered said, "Well, I made the milkshake, so I'm feeling pretty good about that,". Seriously? You're not even gonna APOLOGIZE? I just hung up, and avoided visiting you for a year, hoping that it was just a matter of bad timing. I was wrong: It is apparently a permanent fixture for you to hire incompetent kids that have yet to develop a work ethic. And WTF is the difference between a double bacon deluxe cheeseburger and just a double bacon cheeseburger? Because I asked for no pickles, no onions on a deluxe, and I have two patties, a strip of bacon broke in half, and some cheese on top of a ketchup-smeared bun. What is deluxe about that? And since there's no difference, why couldn't we just use the bacon cheeseburger combo you had listed on the board, and just charge me extra for bacon? Oh, wait, I see here that someone points out that lettuce and tomato make it a "deluxe", so you just generally screwed up my order as well as overcharged me. I have never in my life seen such poor standards, uninvolved cashiers, and overcharging, even though I am becoming used to the local Dumboldt-level of customer service. Used to love their greasy gut-bomb food but will never eat inside that establishment again. It was beyond disgusting. I actually lost my appetite before the food ever came. Every table in the place was dirty, I mean filthy. The floors, seats, everything was looking gross. I used to love Bob's but not so much after the last experience. There seemed to be about 3 or so teenage employees just standing around behind the counter chatting when they could have been cleaning or bussing tables. I actually got up & attempted to clean the disgusting sticky mess from our table while they just stood there. Not impressed. It wasn't busy at all. It was a Saturday & about early afternoon. I graduated from FUHS in 95' and the food at Bob's is just as good as I remember. There are few things that are as good as your nostalgia makes you think they were. I love this place! Their hamburgers are classic and the fries are the perfect shoestring fry. I adore their veggie burgers, packed with flavor and topped with decent veggies; combine it with a side of fries and a chocolate shake and it's a damn fine meal. I am a meat eater by all means, but the veggie burger is just perfect. I love that this place has been catering to the local area for the last 50 or so years and it's easy to see why! read more

My favorite grass-fed beef burgers and handcut fresh garlic fries!! Chz fries are to die for and the milkshakes are made with local humboldt creamery soft serve. So delicious! And who doesn't love a 4-way? My wife and I were driving past Bob's while up in Fortuna on vacation and the old style sign caught my eye. "Bob's Footlongs" with a dachshund in a bun... Oh yes, just HAD to pull in and get a hotdog! I had the double meat footlong and it was everything that I had hoped it would be. My wife had a standard footlong. We sat outside at one of the tables and enjoyed the sun, our dogs, fries and drinks. Just like old times. It really took me back! We'll be back when we are up in the area again. read more

Though Bob's makes a great burger anytime., they outdid themselves during Humboldt county NCJ burger week. Their burger was a cheese skirt burger and this thing was so good. Good quality beef topped with melted cheddar that oozes out into a crispy skirt of cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and crispy onion strings. SO so good!! Best part it was only 7$. They need to up the price and make this a regular menu item. read more

Service not good, rude staff. I also found a hair in my food. Wouldn't eat here again. Plenty of other choices in Fortuna and in Humboldt.

Love this place. Its how I imagine restaurants were in the 50's when kids hung out at soda fountains. It's local, independent and personal, the anti-McDonald's. I always order two cheeseburgers, an order of onion rings and fries. Serious pig out, yes I know, but I can't decide between fries and rings. Burgers are pretty thin, lots of onions, the fries are a bit like In-N-Out because they aren't cooked to death. Only things that would make this place better is being open later and on Sunday. read more

I love it when an old burger joint survives. I found Bob's by stopping by the Chamber of Commerce. I said "Fortuna looks like the kind of town that would have a burger stand that's been around for 50 years. Where is it?" I hadn't found it by cruising Main because it's tucked away on 12th, catty corner from the high school. This location has provided them a base clientele to survive all these years. I found the prices low for restaurant that isn't a chain and has to buy supplies at the same prices you and I do. I was amazed at the work ethic of the young staffers, it speaks well of Fortuna that the kids are polite and know how to work. The whole country is not going to hell in a handbasket, there are still isolated spots with morals and manners. My first visit I had the chili cheese fries with onions. The fries were nicely brown, almost crisp. Smothered in chili and grated cheddar. I ordered large because with the low prices I expected small portions. I'm a big guy, but it was more than I should have eaten. Plenty big enough for two as an entreé or four as a side. The counter girl asked if I wanted dressing, I didn't have to ask! I had 1000 Island, like the animal fries at In-n-Out. My next visit I had the smallest cheese burger on the menu, and it was a normal size, like 1/3 pound. It cost something like $4.30 with tax. They make them just right, old time burger flavor and texture. Not like a fast food burger, almost like homemade. The grill cook asked me if it was alright, that's how proud the staff are of their work. Cash only, like another favorite of mine, Raliberto's in Eureka. I am shocked at how many reviewers found that unacceptable. I'm not a drug dealer either, but I carry cash for convenience. I get it at another 21st century invention, the ATM. Small businesses like Bob's operate on a very narrow profit margin. Think of it more like a labor of love for the community. That 3-5% to process plastic is enough to really hurt. read more

I would normally give 4 stars, but since Karen isn't the owner anymore, it's not really the same. The ice is different, and it's not a good thing, and the burgers aren't even as good as they used to be... the french fries were good though. Took 20 minutes for a burger, a foot long, a corn dog and 2 small orders of fries. Asked for 1000 island with my order, and received straight mayo and ketchup mixed together. Definitely not 1000 island. Footlong was ordered with no onions, and when asked to make another they said it would take 10 minutes. Food is overpriced for quality. Garlic fries suck. Just garlic powder/salt on top, doesn't make it through the whole order. Will not be coming back. read more
