As far as vibe goes, Redwood Cafe nails it. You walk in and it immediately feels warm and homey. Let me start by saying, the service was 5 star. Attentive without being overly so, nailed our orders of four w one custom burger. Just great. The menu has a solid mix of breakfast and lunch items. My wife doesn't do breakfast and I love breakfast so it is the perfect menu for us. My mom and I love benedicts and they have four to choose from. My wife went custom burger. Mother in law - toasted english muffin w sausage. Mom had the California Bene and loved itI had the Florentine Bene - mine was not as good. The dish needed bigger tomatoes and one of my poached eggs was hammered. To be fair, benedicts are a tough dish but I make them all the time so it's doable. I would think omelettes or more traditional breakfasts would be better choices. My wife's burger was solid and again, the overall experience was excellent. read more

We had bypassed where we were to have breakfast originally because the parking was full. We decided to stop here instead. I'm glad we did because we liked everything about it. Let me start with the greeting we received as we walked in. It was kind and very welcoming. We were seated right away. We were seated at a booth, window seating. It was nice because it was raining and you could see the green of the landscape and raindrops, very tranquil to enjoy our breakfast. Our food order was to our table in no time! I had ordered the country fried steak which came with 2 eggs cooked as you liked it, and choice of bread or hash browns. Scrambled eggs, and hash browns for me please. Everything was cooked just right! My decaf coffee was refilled a couple of times and it was very good on a cold, and rainy day. The restaurant was quite busy. Table and booth seating were available. The decor was cozy and rustic perfect for being not too far from the Redwood's, hence the name of the restaurant. The service was very friendly, helpful and quick. We come here every year for a family trip. Usually this place is top tier and I recommend it to everyone I know. Our server Ashley was very nice and helpful, but unfortunately the cooks did not have it together. We received "fresh" squeezed orange juice that tasted moldy and smelled sour. Our food order wasn't taken until 20 minutes into us being sat down. After our order was taken another 30 minutes went by, I asked if our order had even started and to my surprise it had not. I witnessed the cooks arguing and have no organization. I understand being understaffed but I don't understand the disorganized mess that was happening. I paid for the drinks we received but there was no remorse or apology on their end. If anything I had to be more "understanding" about the situation then they were. Used to have a great corn beef hash for a good price. Obviously cut from a roast done the right way. First two times were excellent. Today was a disappointment. Obviously cheap chopped up. We love to try new breakfast/ brunch places so we decide to check out Redwood Cafe. First, the decor is dated and the booths uncomfortable but the service was great. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our server was quick to bring beverages and do check backs. They have a full breakfast lunch menu with the standard things. To the point that we received our food things were pretty good. However, the food is only mediocre to average. My steak and eggs breakfast was ok. Maybe even, pretty good. Steak was overcooked but had flavor. My husband's breakfast though was sub par. The "ham steak" looked and tasted like a big slab of spam. His waffle was barely like warm and didn't melt the butter. His potatoes and toast were edible but not very hot. I shared my hashbrowns with him because they were pretty good. The coffee refills did keep coming. We also tried a cinnamon roll but found them very dry and real cinnamon flavor. Sorry to say, we probably won't return. First of all, the hashbrowns were crispy on the outside and fresh (not mushy) on the inside - perfect. The omelet was sooooo good! Large chunks of mushrooms, onions and bell pepper, mixed in with the avocado. And the Chai - it's a Big Train Spiced Chai that they added to the steamed rich milk and added vanilla. My taste buds had a party! Since then I've had the Grilled Cheese, Rib Eye Steak and Garlic Chicken Cheesesteak sandwiches, AND the chai! Found this treasure on our trip back from Eureka. We are actually just trying to see what's in Fortuna and ended up having a very nice brunch at Redwood Cafe. My hubby and I ordered our all time favorite Denver omelette. Mine with french fries and his with hash brown. The food is wow! Just thinking about it right now makes my mouth water. The rye bread we chose for toast is the best we had so far, it has that pumpernickle taste that is missing from regular rye bread we always get from Mezzaluna. I deprived this cafe of a perfect rating because the service is not quite as snappy as we wanted it to be. I have to wait for my coffee to be refilled after I placed my almost empty cup at the side of the table for the waitress to see (I'm service spoiled like that ). It's great to find a nice place to eat while on a road trip. If you happen to find yourself travelling up north, and hunger strikes at Fortuna, stop by Redwood Cafe. Looking at other dining places in fortuna on yelp, I found this one to have the best rating (4 stars on average), so we took our guests there for lunch. The wait people are quite friendly and nice; they do make you feel that they "care" that you came to their establishment. The atmosphere is good; typical for family dining, not a very small place, for a "hole in the wall". The prices were not bad for these days. I ordered the chili with fries, and noticed the price for that dish was the same as for just chili; however, I found that there wasn't really very much chili in the dish; just enough to "cover" the fries; however, it was good.
