We visited the Giotto bell tower in the area. For free time, our tour guide recommended the Boccadama. It's a cute little restaurant and we quickly sat inside for the AC. There is plenty of outdoor sidewalk sitting but it's a warm day. Since I didn't have much of an appetite, I ordered the thick tomato soup and bread. We also had a fettuccine with bolognese. When the food arrived, I got a bowl of thick tomato paste. So thick that I wasn't sure if it's my order. After some confirmation from the waiter, it was my lunch. I'd expect a soup base but this is more like a paste texture. The taste is simple, strong tomato aroma with simple seasoning. I'm thinking the bread is also mixed in the paste. Overall, it was an interesting soup experience. The fettuccine was top notch. Good pasta texture and we like it that it's not too salty. A good restaurant to visit if you are in the area. read more

Nice Italian eatery that is adjacent to the Piazza Santa Croce square. Reasonably priced food with an accommodating and friendly staff. I ended up getting spaghetti carbonara and a glass of local white wine. Both were quite good with the carbonara made à la Roma style. We had booked a private driver for our first trip into Florence (highly recommend) and was directed to a great street cafe in front of the Piazza Santa Croce. Like most typical cafes, offers indoor or outdoor seating with great views of the plaza activities. At the recommendation of our driver, ordered the lasagna, a wild boar ragu, pear ravioli dish, and a couple appetizers. The buffalo burrata was outstanding being adorned with a healthy amount of black truffles, the lasagna was delicious with a rich meat sauce, and my wild boar was served with home made pappardelle pasta which was just as tender and tasty as any slow braised beef you have had. We did a shore excursion with our cruise line and this eatery came recommended by the tour guides. Between the two of us, we had a cappuccino and a mint lemonade. Both were well-enjoyed. The restaurant is mostly a patio but it is shaded and an enjoyable place to eat and drink. I do wish the management or whoever would do something about the folks trying to sell necklaces and art to you while enjoying your meal though. read more

I wish I had taken a picture. The eggplant parmigiana was the best I had ever eaten. The eggplant melted in my mouth - it was divine. The fennel and orange salad complimented the eggplant perfectly. One of the best meals I've ever eaten! We had two of the house specialties, lasagna and ravioli. But were divine. Wifey looooved the double chocolate cappuccino AND the ice cream when espresso. It was in the middle of our day tour, and we were seated next to another couple (traveling with a different group), so this makes me wonder slightly about to whom the restaurant is catering (menu was also in both Italian and English - great for convenience, but perhaps not something a local would seek out? Unsure, but doesn't matter too much in my book). Regardless, service was efficient, the staff were kind, and we enjoyed the menu recommendations we received. My wife and I had lunch today at Boccodama. It was outstanding! Cute little place with intimate, cozy decor. Service was prompt and friendly. We both had their award-winning lasagna. OMG, the best I've ever had (and I've had lots!) The lasagna was so creamy, it just melted in your mouth! Tiramisu was outstanding, as well. Topped it all off with a nice glass of Chianti Classico. Our Florence tour guide told us this place has the best lasagna in Florence.  And who was I to argue - yes, it was indeed delicious and excellent.  The pasta layers were succulent and fresh as was the cheese and meat.  Wife had their spaghetti bolognese, also very delectable.  Both lunch plates were a reasonable 9.9 euros.  In a confirming vote, an Italian lady in our tour group who grew up on her mom's lasagna also said, yes, it was the best lasagna she has ever had.  Guess that nails it, and I have a benchmark for all my future lasagna dishes.  The difference it seems to me with the tip-top best and other excellent lasagna dishes is subtle though and lies in the pasta freshness and prep.  I can only hope it's not all downhill from here - it's a potential enigma for visiting Italy, but at least for lasagna the difference is subtle as noted! On a separate note, I learned that it is common, but not universal, at Italian eateries to charge an item called "coperto" (see photo of bill).  It runs in the 1-3 euro per person and is like a cover charge, and is not exactly a tip, but I gathered that if you are charged a "coperto", it's customary to not leave any other nominal tip. I only learned this after I sort of double tipped here and was wondering why they charged this "tax" as it was also labeled.  I wan't going to quibble given their hospitality, but I also guessed distrustfully (and erroneously) that I was just being ripped off a bit as a dumb tourist, but that is the real story just FYI! read more

I went to Icchecece a few days before and it was spectacular, but I think Boccadama is a bit too touristy to be allow them to treat you like a normal person. The service was poor. After being served they never checked on us, which would be average in France, but I was hoping to order another wine or dessert. The food was very flavorful but the service was definitely lackluster and made the experience less than. Lastly, the bathroom was truly disgusting. It smelled of piss, there was water and paper all over the floor, and the toilet barely worked. It was like a bar bathroom! Beautiful Italian restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating by the Basilica of Santa Croce. We opted for outdoor seating as it was a beautiful evening and we had a nice view of the basilica. The staff were all very kind, and the food was spectacular! I ordered the lasagna for dinner and the Torta Al pere e cioccolato (pear and chocolate cake), and wow! Molto deliciouso! The lasagna tastes freshly made and it the flavors are rich, this is a house specialty per the menu. The Torta Al pere e cioccolato is not too sweet which was perfect, and it's drizzled in liquid dark chocolate. Fresh and light! Would highly recommend this spot! I also recommend walking by or calling ahead to see if they're open before skipping out when their hours say they're closed, we went on a day it says they were closed, but they were clearly open, and glad that we were able to experience this. Although the pizza was not bad it was not the best we've had in Florence. Our waiter was a young girl and she must of been serving twenty tables by herself. This is the perfect spot to get away from the madness, while still observing it at a comfortable distance. You will have a view of the square. The host was delightfully chipper, and happy to accommodate our request for a window table. There is also outdoor patio seating if you prefer. The pasta is fresh, and many of the wines are local. Everything you want in an Italian restaurant in Italy! The restrooms are modern and clean. (Not always the case in Italy). The house specialty lasagna was delish but filling. For lunch, I recommend the Pasta with burrata and tomato. Light and simple, but satisfying. The sparkling moscato was far better than the type you get in the states. Not too sweet. Speaking of sweet, the pear and chocolate cake is divine. I highly recommend that you try it. In my opinion, it is far better to spend more time here than wandering towards the nearby Duomo. This restaurant is a classic Italian restaurant that is NOT a tourist trap. The food is authentic. Florence does not have as many good outdoor seating options as it's neighboring cities because the roads are heavily used, however this restaurant has beautiful outdoor seating in a quiet square next to an authentic leather shop. I had the chicken liver patté which is a good light lunch option (but very salty). Their caprese salad is also superb with fresh tomatoes that are very red in color. Try their lemon soda as well. We ate here multiple times on our last trip to Florence. Reasonably priced, good food and location. Lasagne was excellent. Hubby had the pasta with bolognese and liked it but did not care for the sauce used for spaghetti and meatballs. I also tried the pizza which was very good. The only negative is that there are a few benches near the outdoor restaurant seating where locals tend to sit and smoke and you have no recourse to avoid the nasty smoke. read more
