I had some really hit or miss dinners in Florence. Luckily, I came to this place on my first and last night. Location at the Santa Cruce plaza is nice scenery. I can't imagine this place is capable of putting out something not delicious. I believe part the menu changes from time to time (daily list items), I found the usual menu to be loaded with classic Italian we Americans have grown to love. I had the lasagna twice here (10€) and the chicken breast with porchini mushrooms (secondi). Chicken breasts were excellent... the Lasagna... league of its own. Loaded with meat sauce. Perfect salt balence. Fresh Pasta. Nice touch of Cream within the layers. It is said by many they have the best lasagna in Florence. And that it might ruin other lasagnas for you. I'd agree with both statements. But to be honest, the majority of us aren't worthy of eating this quality of lasagna on any sort of regular basis (I know I'm not), so my advice is to just enjoy it while you're in Florence as many times as you can you vagabonds. read more

We usually avoid restaurants that are in the center of a major tourist attraction. But our wonderful hotel which was just 3 buildings from Piazza Sta Croce recommended this restaurant which was right around the corner. SO glad we did! This is a SMALL, AUTHENTIC, FAMILY-RUN restaurant. No pretensions, no frills. The lighting is dim and relaxing. The food is excellent. We had everything from the roast pork to the ossobucco to pasta -- and after 2 weeks of pasta, pizza and bread in late March (Italian menus are not big on salad or vegetables, esp in late March) , we were delighted to find their lovely pear salad! Everything was delicious, high-quality, very reasonably priced. We were lucky to be in Florence before the post-covid hordes of tourists arrived -- so we were able to just walk in without a reservation. Of our dinners in Florence, this was one of our very favorites. Great atmosphere and a view of Santa Croce. The weather was a little cool the night we dined so outside tables were not available, we walked up without reservations for dinner and were seated right away. We started off our meal with glasses of Chianti, a cheese plate, and bruschetta. Now cheese plates are one of my most favorite things and this one did not disappoint. Beautiful presentation, three types of cheese with assorted fruits, honey, and walnuts. The bruschetta was great as well, three large pieces pilled with fresh tomatoes. For our main courses we had the lasagna with meat sauce and the large macaroni served with traditional wild boar sauce. Both entrees were good but the stand outs were really the antipasti and dessert courses. We finished our meal with the tiramisu and panna cotta with wild berry sauce, accompanied by lemoncello. The panna cotta was one of the best desserts we had all trip, and the wild berry sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the richness of the dessert. There was a lively table of locals celebrating a birthday sitting behind us while we dined, it was fun and gave us a glimpse into everyday life. We will definitely be back again. read more

Pros: Fantastic customer service, reasonable prices, tasty food, easy-to-read menu, wide variety of food Cons: Bland and slightly stale bread, relatively pricy house wine (compared to similar restaurants), underwhelming location I was very pleased with my experience at Boccadama, especially with how they payed attention to customer service. Upon notifying us that we would have to wait for a table several minutes, they offered us complementary prosecco, then quickly just found us a table. Unfortunately, the piazza the restaurant is located on felt a little lifeless, especially with signs of construction right next to the patio. The wine was good (as with everywhere in Italy), but a little more expensive than we had seen elsewhere. Still, well worth the money, as was all of the food. At around €10 per plate, we found plenty of tasty things - chicken pate and Italian meat for an appetizer, pizza rustica (pears, blue cheese, and walnuts), and spaghetti, as well as a very good fennel and orange salad. They were also very gracious in replacing our appetizer when the wind blew a menu into a wine glass, which spilled on the food. The waiter and a man I assumed was the manager or owner were quite attentive in refilling our wine glasses or quickly bringing over our check. Overal, a very pleasant experience. read more

We went to this adorable and well-situated restaurant with low expectations. Usually it seemed that whenever a restaurant had the perfect view it was a tourist trap. That was definitely not the case with this gem. The service was the best and most pleasant we experienced in the entire week, Dominic was pleasant and professional and expertly handled a crush of visitors who all had to be somewhere. We had a wonderful dinner outside looking at Santa Croce. In our party of five we ordered 2 individual T-bones and 3 pasta dishes we did not think we could find on a menus back home. Splitting these across the table made for great conversations. Add to this trying the Spinach flan with Saffron sauce for a starter and Tiramisu, Affogato (Decafenato), and Amaretto for the finish and the meal was a complete experience. The servers have a pragmatic hospitality which knows when to step in with a little advice while also making room for you to explore the menu. Definitely recommend the Vernaccia di San Gimignano local Tuscan wine, everyone enjoyed it. read more

Florence - We went to Florence on a one day tour from our cruise ship docked in Livorno. Our meeting point was Piazza di Santa Croce. We had been through a lot of the tourist areas and were getting hungry as we headed back to our meeting point. We found Boccadama Restaurant right on the piazza so decided to give it a try. We started off with an appetizer of bruschetta and had pastas and salads for our appetizers. The food was good here and the service was fine. The line to the restroom was super long though as there was only one toilet in use. During my wait in the toilet line I was able to observe one of the waiters eating out of a bowl in the glass enclosed room where our bruschetta had been prepared. He was filling pitchers of water and catching a snack at the same time. He was eating with his bare hands and reaching into the various prep food bowls. He didn't seem aware that he was being watched (and photographed) or the fact that I saw him eating out of the items that were being used to make dishes for the customers. Eek! Our tour guide took us to this restaurant after touring the leaning tower of Pisa. I didnt expect much but what a surprise. It was a little wait for our food but definitely worth it. We were in Florence 11 years ago and remembered this restaurant as serving the best bistecca all fiorentina of all the places we tried. Despite its location in a tourist hotspot (although what in beautiful Florence isn't?), it remains a wonderful place to eat (they have tables on the piazza and open the doors in fine weather so you can eat inside and still enjoy the outside). We had decided to try another highly-rated bistecca place (I'Tuscani), and spent twice as much on a chewy, uncuttable, barely cooked, flavor-lacking steak. I had begun to wonder if my memory had served me ill in its insistence that bistecca alla fiorentina was a magical dish to experience. But no, it was just I'Tuscani. Back at Boccadama, we started with bruschetta, (lovely), and pear, cheese, and sage ravioli (a revelation!), following with a kilo of bistecca for 45 euros. We were not disappointed. Perfectly cooked - rare as the Italians eat it - but actually cooked, it was tender, salty, magnificently delicious. We ate the whole thing. I ended with a limoncello (obviously homemade, a slice of lemon sitting inside it) and my husband a cappuchino. The bottle of house red started off a little metallic but opened up as we ate. Our whole meal cost as much as the steak at I'Tuscani. Looking out on Santa Croce, having sated our senses, we left, happy to know that the bistecca alla fiorentina of memory was no legend, but thankfully still alive and well at Boccadama. read more

Not even worth one star. 1) meat was not medium-well as requested but very well done. Luckily they changed it but so we couldnt eat together... 2) other gueat came and we were asked right after dinner(!) still having wine if we can change the table. That was ok for us but then 5min later the waiter came again and asked us to leave the table and have a drink inside at the bar(it was a hot summer night,nobody was sitting inside). We decided to leave and were really pissed. Especially since you have to pay extra in Italy for having a table and then the waiter forces you to leave to make room for new guests. Not OK! Our guide recommended this restaurant as the best lasagna in Florence. The restaurant themselves said that it's the best lasagna in the "area" (being humble). For me, it's the best lasagna ever ... This is why... It's not only about the taste, but more towards the texture. I love it as it is cooked to perfection and you do not even need to "bite" it, the lasagna just "melt" in your mouth. My wife order "gnocchi", which is another great choice. It's difficult to explain but the taste and texture is just perfect (not the same like the ones we have in the US). We paired those with local Chianti ... Omg, they're just perfect ! We always closed with Tiramisu for all of our meals in Italy ... The desert is perfect as well. Decent outside eatery by the Santa de Croce church were Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and several others are buried. Great shopping in the area as well. If I could give a half star I would say this is a 3.5 eatery. My carbonara was fabulous but the bacon wasn't crisp. read more
