    Cross-section of my massimo panini
    Mary T.

My review is for Boccone at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Terminal 1. The problem? There are two Yelp listings and I don't know which one is for U.S. departures by gate F57. For this listing, there are only four reviewed. One specifies gate D42, which means a Canadian departure. I can't tell with the other reviews. Because the locations are the same for both listings, they will both have similar reviews. Last Thursday, I decided to get a bite to eat at Boccone. It's not exactly next door to gate F57. Rather, it's across from Booster Juice, which wasn't far after you clear customs. There were a bunch of folks waiting for their food. I had to walk by them to get to the lineup. This place has paninis, pizzas, pastas, and more. I had had pizza for breakfast, as I needed to eat all my leftovers before jetting off. I went with a panini here. They looked yummy. I went for the massimo panini. It had shaved roast beef, asiago, honey mustard aioli, radicchio, lettuce, and tomato. It was toasted and cut in half. I also grabbed a bottle of Diet Pepsi, which is away from the counter. I paid with a debit card. It was just under $19. You basically find a place within the eatery to sit down and eat. I found a free single table with two chairs. My backpack occupied one seat. I sat in the other. The table had crumbs on it. I wiped it down and then sat down to eat. My panini was yummy. I loved the roast beef with asiago. So good! The honey mustard aioli was subtle. The lettuce was iceberg that was shredded. It would have been better with romaine. The iceberg didn't taste fresh, which was the only disappointing part of my panini. The bread was perfectly toasted and delicious. I was thirsty. I drank my entire bottle of Diet Pepsi before remembering to take a photo of it. It was nicely chilled. I enjoyed it. It was a nice change coming here. I'd return to try some pizza or a salad. (501)

    Margherita pizza with no basil.

This review is for the Boccone Pronto area-Toronto Pearson Terminal 1 Gate F57. If I am ever in this area -I won't be stopping here. The pizza is a chewy oily mess. They ran out of cheese pizza. The Margarita pizza did not have bay leaves just tomato and cheese. The service was okay. I tossed half my slice (the portion size is good) because I just couldn't eat anymore. The ambiance is okay-standard airport chairs and table.

Stopped in for a 2 gourlay over. Planned on staying for a few drinks but decided to leave after 1 drink. Worse poutine I ever had. Service was good. Wine is ok.

I ordered the Southwest Steak Hash with Scrambled Egg Whites (4/5). The potatoes had a nice texture to them. They were crispy on the outside yet pillowy soft on the inside. I love the addition of the fried onions too. The steak, however, was not as tender and juicy as I hoped to be. The guac could've used some more lemon. The sauce was good with its flavour tying in the dish. It was creamy and delicately spicy. I asked for tabasco sauce for that extra kick! We were seated right next to the washrooms and right in front of the entrance of the kitchen which was unpleasant. Hence, why I deducted a star. I don't think they should even offer this table to customers. Our server was great. She was attentive and friendly, and she always took the time to check in on us and top up our coffees and water.

The only thing was the noodles was more vermicelli than the udon. I think next time I'll order it I'll get it for udon only. Definitely coming back here for the bakkutteh dish my other favourite!

The place was far from crowded when we showed up, and we were told to check out the menus and place our order at the front. We decided to share the House Special Sandwich ("Pork loin marinated with house special recipe, tomato, fried egg, cabbage and peanut butter") and the Malaysian Street Style sandwich ("4oz ground beef with a taste of M'sian spice, tomato, fried egg, lettuce and sweet & spicy sauce"). (I also got a milk tea to drink, and it was really good. Very rich but not too sweet.) The sandwiches were both excellent. They were packed with flavor and the various components all worked really well together. The Malaysian Street Style did flirt with being just a little too sweet, but it was balanced out with the other components. Everything was decently priced, too. The bill, with tip, came out to around 25 bucks, which is great considering the quantity and caliber of food we were given.

I went on a Saturday around 9:00 AM, and there was already a line of about seven people ahead of me. Since I was dining solo, I grabbed a seat at the kitchen bar, which ended up being a fun spot to watch everything happening. I ordered the mango mimosa and the wild blueberry pancakes. Mildred's has some of the best pancakes I have ever had. They were fluffy, flavorful and absolutely lived up to the hype. The mango mimosa was a little too sweet for my taste, but I would still love to come back and try more of their menu. The staff were friendly, although service was a bit slow to start. It took about 15 to 18 mins before I got water and was able to place my order. Overall, I can absolutely see why this place has such a great reputation. I waited over a decade to try it, and it was well worth the wait.

When dining in, you order at the counter, get a number, and they bring your food to the table. Breakfast items are available until 4 p.m., and after that they serve salads, bowls, and sandwiches. On my first visit, I had a hot chai latte with espresso and it was absolutely delicious. The second time, I tried the iced pumpkin spice latte and didn't love it. The pumpkin spice syrup is homemade, which is nice, but the flavor fell a little flat and the large glass was mostly milk, which overpowered the drink. For food, I've tried the egg sandwich simple but good. The spinach feta croissant was heavy on the spinach, light on the cheese, and even though I asked for it warmed up, it was still cold in the middle. Their bowls are very fresh, but I found them a little under-seasoned and could've used more dressing or a sprinkle of seasoning to tie everything together. Overall, it's a cozy spot with an inviting vibe (I love their "stay awhile" sign on the wall). I think it really depends on what you order and your personal taste. For some, the fresh and lighter options might be perfect. For me, a little more flavor and balance would make it great.

In warmer weather, they open the large windows, and it's quite a nice atmosphere. Came for coffee, but was blown away by their breakfast plates. They have a small selection of beautiful pastries on display too. Their Omelette plates are made with fresh ingredients, well-seasoned home fries, and fresh bagels.
