Pretty good deli items like pasta and potato salads as well as on the spot prepared sandwiches. It is a great place to grab a bite to eat for lunch for a reasonable price if you use their $2.00 off coupons which it seems they give you every purchase you make at lunch there. Easily the worst produce I've seen in Chicago. Rubber broccoli, soggy blueberries, soft apples, and even moldy garlic. The seafood has a strong fishy stench signifying spoiling. I tried it many times, hoping I choose rotting garlic cloves or a bad apple by chance but have been consistently proven that it was no coincidence at all. I will never darken its doors again in my life. Just experienced the most horiffic customer service I've been a subject of in decades. Jerry, who professed to be the "owner", refused to honor a sign that was posted for Dole Salad Greens at $.99/bag. True, the markdown was because the lettuce had a use-by date of today, June 11, but it was going to be my lunch less than ten minutes from purchase so that was ok. For him to raise his voice at me, however, when I questioned the $2/bag charge, cite he had a line of people waiting to pay for their lunches and I had to move away, bluntly state he would not honor their sale, and actually refused to approve my refund was astounding. Condescending, out-of-control, bug-eyed, and clearly stressed to the point where he was in over his head, I plan to pursue this matter with Corporate Office until Jerry is made to realize I am owed an apology. Due to this Bockwinkel's experience, Mariano's will be my go to from now on as they actually make you feel welcome. Marianos makes you feel special special to be escorted to your cashier - like they are actually glad you came (go figure). Bockwinkel's (and Jerry) wants your money any way they can get it (bait and switch most prevalent) and out of their way - all without so much of a hello, thank you, goodbye, or have a nice day. read more

But don't worry - Bockwinkels might save you from resorting to any of that. You will find many freshly made sandwiches and deli items for under $5 bucks! Seriously. It is right across the street from the Hyatt Regency so instead of getting $3 banana, a $4 bottle of Aquifina, and $11 bagel with cheese from there, you can simply stop in here and pick up bags of groceries that will last you an entire week for under $20. Watch out for the Entenmanns Donuts that sit on the display shelf on the floor near the register. Usually the employees park the big yellow wet mop next to the display near the front registers, about an hour or so before they close in an effort to juggle spot-cleaning and the checking out of the last few desperate patrons ( since there is no other grocery store in the area). Chemicals that can cause real harm to humans and donuts ...gross! Also, I got the macaroons the other day at the Harbor Pointe location which had mold out to wa-zoo on them. They were okay with giving me my money back during another visit, but no apology even crossed their minds. Be careful what you buy there. Everything isn't bad, as long as it's packaged and there is a visible expiration date. Produce and meat should be carefully & independently inspected by the purchaser always at this joint. Too bad they don't catch on like the WFoods and F&O stores. Afforable prices are the best thing the place has going for it. Let's see: as far as service goes, you'd be better off knowing how to bag your own groceries. The place is poorly-managed and the employees treat the customers very rude at BOTH locations. All I gotta say is that I can't wait for the new supermarket to open in Lakeshore East Park area, but the developer Magellan has conveniently pushed it off for the third year in a row. read more

I work at Aon and get lunch there almost every day. Their salad bar has the best selections of veggies, cheese, meat and dressings, plus their soups are great and there are usually 8-10 to choose from. It's cheaper and better than Mariano's anyway, plus you get $2 off if your deli bill hits $8. I don't shop there for groceries, but their lunch can't be beat. read more

I'm just a visitor to this city but instead of my parents or friends I miss my big grocery stores. Seriously. Thankfully I ran into Bockwinkel's just as my hands were twitching for something home cooked. Okay, PRICES WERE A TEENSY BIT HIGHER than what I was used to paying FOR SOME GENERAL cupboard items, but hey--at least I had those as an option now. This place looks MUCH BIGGER INSIDE than it does outside. EVERYTHING I NEEDED to make myself three meals a day was available... from scratch. The small PRODUCE AREA at the entrance had CLEAN AND BRIGHT VEGGIES. Milk, juices, and eggs were around the corner in the back. Even the DELI WAS A GOOD SIZE and I took home a couple sandwiches and warm soups (c'mon, you can't expect me to cook every meal right? I'm on vacation after all). You may have to SACRIFICE A BELOVED BRAND for something else but chances are THEY HAVE ALL THE BASICS you need for cooking. read more

I went here because I have $5 off a purchase here using LevelUp. One afternoon I got a sandwich here and it was great. You know how grocery stores have the deli with meats and cheeses? Bockwinkel's has one, but they also do sandwiches, which is awesome! Endless combinations of meat and cheese make for great and unique sandwiches. It's very expensive as far as grocery stores go, and I usually go to Potash. But roughly $5-7 for a great sandwich is a pretty good deal! read more

Bockwinkel's is a great corner grocery store. Its very clean and the staff if always friendly. Prices are OK and they stay are open 7am to midnight everyday except holidays! good selection and great food behind the deli. Their rotisserie chickens with the mashed potatoes are excellent too. read more

I live almost across the street from the one on South Water. Their meats, produce and deli are very good. Has a great salad bar and some already cooked items. The store is always very clean and the employees there are very friendly and helpful. Once in a while I'll go to Dominick's, but Bocks is my go-to place most of the time. The prices are a bit high, but not much higher than your average Dominick's and Jewel. read more

I don't think I've ever had worse service in my life. I told the woman at the counter that I wanted a 1/3 lb liver wurst sandwich with pumpernickel bread and horseradish cheddar. She gave me this blank stare and asked me, "What's liver wurst and pumpernickel bread?". I realize that may be a pretty odd order, but you should at least know the names of the handful of meats and breads that are literally sitting in front of you all day. I pointed toward the liver wurst, but it still wasn't registering with her. She had to get her superior to physically pick up the liver wurst and pumpernickel bread to start making the sandwich. It then took her about 10 minutes to make this sandwich. When her superior noticed that she was taking long, she asked her, "How much does he want?". She hesitated and then told her that I wanted 1/4 lb. I corrected her and said I wanted 1/3 lb. A minute later after cutting the meat, she weighs out 1/4 lb of liver wurst on the scale. At this point, I didn't even bother correcting her because my lunch break was winding down and I wanted to get out of there. She then asked me to repeat what toppings I wanted on there three times, and handed me the sandwich without the cheese. I usually sympathize with people working in the food service industry because I worked in a few restaurants when I was younger, but I seriously don't know how she could mess up her job that badly. The other employees around her didn't seem to notice anything abnormal either. There are plenty of better delis in Chicago, and food places in general around that particular area.
