I would probably rate this as more of a three and a half stars. We originally found Bodega Bay Best Vaction Rentals by looking at houses on VRBO.com and chose a house that according to their description was minutes from the beach. Once my mother had already confirmed the house by sending in the money and we got the address we saw that it would be quite a walk to the beach and we would have to cross Highway 1 with two small children. She called BBBVR directly and asked just how many minutes the walk would be and was told about 15-20 minutes. My mother asked if they had any houses in our price and size range that were closer. She sent over three options and the first one we chose she wrote back and said that the owners were choosing to stay there and we would have to pick another. Strike two. Finally we settled on Ocean Song, which was only three houses away from Highway 1 with the beach just on the other side. None of the options we were offered were without crossing that very busy road. The house, Ocean Song, was listed as kid and dog friendly. While the house was lovely, with a gorgeous view and the right size for what we needed, I would say that it was more dog than kid friendly. The kitchen was quite small, so they had all of the dishware on a rack on the floor next to the dining bar. This was very tempting for my 22 month old to want to play with. Also they had the supplies for starting a fire in the fireplace, including matches and a metal poker in a basket on the floor. They have two showers and no bathtub, although one shower had a handheld shower head, so we made do to get our kids clean. The house itself is an updated 1970's house with lots of picture windows for viewing the crashing waves below. The bathrooms and kitchen have newer countertops and appliances. The house is eclectically decorated and has all the modern conviences (cable TV, cordless phones and wireless internet). The porch is very pretty, has lots of seating and even has a small firepit. The garage, which is strangely accessed through the master bedroom closet, has a gas grill and a full sized washer and dryer. This would be the perfect house for a family with older or no children who wish to travel with their dog. One thing that slightly grossed us out was that it smelled of dog immediately upon entering and there were obvious spots on the carpet near the front door. We aren't really dog people, so we would probably prefer someplace a little less pet friendly. One note about accessing Portuguese Beach from the house. There is a path directly across from the street the house is on, but it is very steep. If you walk a little down Highway 1 to your left you will come to a path with wooden stairs set into the hillside, which is much easier and safer. However, be careful when you are walking back to the house. Walk to the actual street and don't take any side trails. As we found out one of the trails leads directly into the backyard of the house just across from Ocean Song, but when you try to cross the field you will find a steep gully filled with poison ivy and unless you go back through the neighbor's yard it is a one mile plus walk around the gully back to the house. What should have taken us five minutes ended up taking an hour simply because we were eager to get off the side of Highway 1 and the cars that speed along that expanse. None of the options were fun with small impulsive children. On our second day we just decided to drive to Doran Beach since the waves are smaller and safer for young children anyway. read more

We had a great experience renting from BBBVR. The house itself ("Ocean Song") exceeded expectations with a wonderful back deck overlooking the ocean while the service we got was top notch. When I realized we hadn't brought our baby's portable crib with us and that there wasn't one already in the house I called Mia and Mike and they were exceptionally helpful and arranged to have one brought out for us that same day. We had been recommended to BBBVR from one of my friends initially and I've now been recommending them to all of my friends. They made the overall experience wonderful. read more

So just completed 2 nights at the Captain's Quarters. Overall, we are satisfied but there were some unfortunate circumstances that the management office BBBVR did nothing to rectify. Let's start with the good. The location is perfect for a waterfront house. The house looked just like the pictures so there were no surprises there. There was ample dishes and cooking utensils which was nice, everything you needed was there. I also love how they have you DVD players and movies. We used the kayaks, there are only 2 instead of the 3 advertised. But it was fun to say the least. Now for the negatives. 1) highway 1 is literally behind your head in the master bedroom. If you are a light sleeper, forget it. I was worried that I was going to get hit by car and so I didn't sleep much. 2) the washer and dryer reaked of mildew. Like horrible. 3) the microwave was broken. This was not advertised so we had to make do with no microwave which sucked ass. They sent a maintenance guy out but I never got a return phone call to say it was broken. When We checked out the girl acted if she could care less about it....so high five to the HORRIBLE customer service. 4) fixture in the bathroom was broken and dangling. Not advertised but whatever. Overall we MIGHT stay here again...we paid $860.00 for 2 nights I guess I just expected better and to be compensated for the broken microwave. read more

My husband and I rented "lands end" the house itself needs some updating and some cleaning we were a little disappointed and would not recommend anyone stay there. However, my reason for this review is that I, unfortunately, left my narcotic pain medication in the bathroom drawer. The day we left as soon as we got home I realized I had forgotten it and we called right away and Amanda said that she would mail it that afternoon. A few days went by and we still hadn't received it so I called Amanda back and she said "yeah, I am mailed it" and I could hear her smiling and I felt like it was kind of odd. I never did receive my pain medication so I do suspect that she kept it or covered up for someone who did. This was a very unfortunate incident because there is no way we could ever use them again knowing that if we were to forget something we may not get it back. I've actually spoken to Amanda a couple of times and she has changed her story three times as to when she mailed it so that right there is a little suspicious. Lesson learned I will be keeping my valuable medication in my purse and with me. read more

Wow! What a great place to rent from! We stayed at the Harbour Scape house, which is a one bedroom house right across PCH from the bay. The house was very clean and the view of the bay was gorgeous. Overall, the home was very inviting and homey. It was steps away from a market where we were able to pick up some necessities. We would definitely stay at Harbour Scape again! The staff of BBBVR was extremely responsive, even on the weekends. The price was great, especially given all the space we had at the house. We would've paid the same amount to stay at a hotel, but instead, we had an entire house! Can't wait to come back here again! read more

I rented the "Owl's Nest" property that is managed by Bodega Bay "BEST" Vacation Rentals. When I arrived at the house, the house was infested with ants. Within a couple of hours, the ants had taken over all of our groceries. The ants were also all over the furniture and in the bedrooms. I spoke with Mia, who manages the property and she said that it was too late to move us to a different house but she would "make it right." The ant situation continued to get worse the next day. I felt embarrassed that I invited my friends to stay at this house. When I returned home, Mia promised to refund the cleaning fee to me, however, over a month has passed and I have not received a check. I have sent several e-mails to Mia and I have not received a response. I would not recommend Bodega Bay "BEST" Vacation Rentals. I have rented vacation homes on VRBO.com and this if by far the worst experience. read more

The house we rented through here was okay. The house was not exactly what it claimed to be, a little under par, but it was fine and worked perfectly for what we needed. (Although it said it was walking distance to the beach, which even though it was...a long walk, you would have to cross over the HWY to get there and then walk along the hwy to get to a place that you could actually walk down to the beach since a lot of the beach is down a cliff) Its the actual rental agency BBBVR that was/is awful. They are slow to respond, and when asked questions their answers are half completed. When it was time for us to go to the rental we had to notify them, as though they forgot that we were coming and didn't provide us any information how to get in. They are also extremely awful about handling money and really don't abide by their own rules written in the contact. If anything goes wrong while you are there, make sure to document it completely so you don't be held accountable. They will charge you for previous renters damages if they didn't find them before. I'm sure people have had great experiences with them and I'm sure they are not this awful to all, but we will never rent through them again. It's fraud. read more

For the price you pay per night you would expect the rental to be amazing. We rented the Captains Quarters, vacation home rental . From the way they advertised the place it looked like a dream vacation home rental. Boy was it disappointing. Walking into the place the kitchen and living room looked OK exactly whats on the website. Bathroom was nice and good movie selection. When I went into the master bedroom not too impressed decoration was not up to date bedding looked so old. The room was directly behind hwy 1. Its suppose to be a relaxing quite weekend try sleeping at night hearing cars on a busy high way drive by every minute. According to the website it looked like the hot tub was private but it's not. It's on the lower level of the rental so you have to walk down some stairs to the lower deck area and the hot tub is shared with other people staying at the rentals, we decided not to use the hot tube. Only two available kayak's to use and they were only for one person which sucked. Towels smelled like mildew I had to rewash towels before I even used them. Heads up washer smells like mildew which makes the hall way stink. Cleaning fee is $150 place was not too clean we are not messy people but they leave a long list of things they want you to do before you check out even take out the trash if your paying so much for a cleaning fee why so many rules. Hotel's never give you so many rules before checkout. read more

We had a great experience staying in "Steps to the Beach!" It was the perfect size for us and the photos were very accurate. We walked to the beach a few times and that was no problem for our particular ability levels. Some might find it a bit too long. The stairs down to Portuguese Beach directly across Hwy 1 are pretty difficult. To get to the main parking lot with the more gradual sandy descent to the beach, you have to walk about 50 yards along Hwy 1. We were there during the week so it wasn't too busy or scary. But on a weekend, I would find it very scary to make that short walk with my senior parents or young children. My experience with the office was generally good. I asked about a weekday-only price and they took $25 off each night. I appreciate that kind of flexibility from a business. They don't take payment through VRBO so I'm not sure how the VRBO guarantees work because I just went with it. But it's definitely something to be aware of. There was a mistake in the original paperwork, including the price, and they fixed that quickly. The only problem was that the instructions for getting into the house involved stopping at the office for the key with office listed as open until 4pm but the office actually closed at 2pm. It was a little confusing that we couldn't check in until 4pm and the office would close before that time. Turns out they sent an email that day with the lock box code, which I think should have been sent earlier to help with our planning and avoid an unnecessary stop. Bonus was there's a coffee house right next to the office so we made it a coffee stop instead. When we got to the house at 3:55pm, the cleaning crew were just finishing up, which is fine but tarnished the curb appeal just a bit. Just a few small issues in the house 1) the can opener didn't work and I can't believe we would be the first people to notice that when it was as jacked up as it was and 2) there was a stain on the sheets in the king bedroom that was pretty gross. I tried to wash it out but it wouldn't come out. I don't think sheets with a stain should be put on a bed in a nice place like that. 3) be aware that the grill is charcoal. They provide charcoal so that worked for us but if you'd never used one, it might be disappointing for you. Overall a good experience in the house and with the property managers. read more

I have rented homes from BBBVR for 10 years. I have never had an issue of any kind with the homes or Mia the property manager. In fact, Mia is the most accommodating property manager I have ever dealt with. We have stayed at Casa Bella mostly, because of the location and the home is very comfortable, clean and inviting. The views and the sound of the ocean couldn't get any better! The private outdoor sitting area is great for visiting and watching humming birds as they come to drink from the fountain! The sunsets are spectacular. We have a wonderful experience every time with BBBVR.com and the entire staff! read more

Upon calling and giving my credit card information and booking a vacation rental, I was called about 1/2 hour later and told by Bodega Bays Best Vac rentals that the price was increased due to the holiday weekend, and the rate I was quoted would be increased. The girl instructed me to go back online and cancel my reservation, and then request it again. After discussing the price difference I told her I was not willing to pay the difference, she put me on hold briefly and then returned and said they would waive the difference and she would be emailing me the rental contract sign. When I returned to complete the signing process (within the hour) I was unable to access the document to sign. I called Bodega Bay Best Vac Rental and was told there was an error and someone else had rented the property which I had reserved. Sounds fishy to me since it was open and clear to rent when I made the original call. I would never choose to use this company, I find them unprofessional and questionable at best. Fortunately we were able to find a reputable vacation rental company and will certainly enjoy a different place for the Labor Day weekend. read more

My experience with Mia of BBBVR and Stacy in her office was professional and fine. However, my experience with the owner of one of their rental houses I had planned to rent was a nightmare. Mia showed me the new home under construction, "A Breathe of Heaven". The house was perfect for our family gathering. I was open and upfront with Mia that 11 people would be staying and sleeping in the home. During the day and for the evening meals we would be having an additional 6 or 7 family members come over. This family gathering was to celebrate my sister getting her Masters Degree; there would be 3 generations of family getting together. Mia agreed that this house would be perfect for what we wanted and had no issues. In April I signed the agreement and paid the required deposit. When the time came to pay the final payment, I did. When the date got closer I asked for a list of what the house would include, so that I could make more specific plans with my family members for our weekend. What I got back from Mia on July 3rd via e-mail by way of Kelsey was a "Zero Tolerance" sheet, a list of 8 very detailed rules that are so very strict I could not believe it. We have no issue with No smoking in the house, this makes sense. But Noise: that if noise from inside the house can be heard if you step outside.... that is over the top strict. The most absurd rule is that if anyone other than the people sleeping in the house comes to visit, that I must pay an additional $25 per person per day. The owner considers that the house becomes a "Hub House", if anyone other than the renters is in it. The owner of "A Breathe of Heaven" is too paranoid to be the owner of a vacation rental. She has created a set of 8 "No Tolerance" rules that even a normal homeowner would not expect. Also, those kind of expectations should be told to any and all potential renters before they sign a rental agreement, not several weeks before they are going to arrive at the house. If I would have known what she expected and how I would be treated I would have not signed on to rent the house in the first place. read more
