2nd time visiting after several years and this time our party of four had the HH food and drink items as well as food items that were on the dinner menu. Overall I felt the dishes were solid but some such as the calamari could have had cooked longer to show some browning on the outside of the rings as the outside of the calamari looked anemic. We were fortunate that our party of four was able to be seated comfortably in the booth next to the front window which provided a view of the street. Sadly bodega on main has fallen off after the last few years. They used to have an incredible paella, but it's now closer to something from a microwave container than anything you'd get in Europe (much less Spain). No socarrat, no saffron... meh. Sadly, as one of the few places in Vancouver that even SERVES paella, it's still in the top 5 in the city, but it's definitely not #1, or even 3. Service is fine, ambiance is good. read more

Stopped by Bodega on Main late night (10pm) on a Thursday and they were empty so it was easy to get a spot for 5 people pretty easily. Their interiors are pretty nice and a good place for a large group. It's a tapas place so you would want to order multiple things for the table because it's all shareables. Patatas Bravas: 5/5 this was my favourite thing from their menu. It was fried potatoes with a zesty, tangy dressing. Really enjoyed it! Chorizo iberico: 5/5 again, super garlicky and lots of flavour!! champinones: basically garlicky mushrooms! For dessert we got their - churros: SOOO good!! The chocolate dipping sauce it came with really made the experience better. membrillo y queso: such an interesting dessert, it came with machengo cheese and a jelly! I came here just to try paella and I was not disappointed! The menu said that the paella comes with two servings per order, but I was able to split it two other friends as the pan is quite large. We also got the soup of the day (a tart tomato cream soup with goat cheese), an order of ceviche (it had a bit of a spicy kick to it), and beef tongue (super tender and tomato-y) and was so full after! Everything was very delicious and the aesthetic interior of the restaurant really completes the experience. The staff were also very helpful and friendly so I'd definitely come back here again. Came at a Friday at 4:30 PM and we were seated immediately--no need to make a reservation bc the restaurant was quite empty. Place was charmingly decorated and service was friendly. Food also came out pretty fast. Ordered: calamari, patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, arroz español. Would skip the gambas as they came out lukewarm and did not have a the garlic flavor. Calamari and patatas bravas was decent, arroz español was the favorite out of the four tapas as it was buttery and savory. Apparently this is a really popular date night and group celebration spot as there were lineups out the door! Staff were attentive and came by to check on us often. Have heard great things about Bodega for years. Fresh off a trip from Spain, I was craving tapas and found a friend to go with me. We made a reservation for a weekend for 2 people for 5:45pm and it was easy making a reservation online. Happy Hour is until 6pm (woo hoo!) and I placed an order of the meatballs, chicken wings, and seafood rice pilaf which was all on the Happy Hour menu. My friend also ordered the baked shrimp, beef skewers, and house red wine off the regular menu. I got a virgin Pina colada. Ambiance is cool with a chill vibe. They dimmed the lights for dinner service and it's a great spot to chat, eat, and chill with friends or to go on a date. Service was excellent and our server was really attentive and personable. Drinks were really good! The Virgin Pina colada is the best I ever had and had an extra large ice cube in it that didn't seem like it would ever melt completely. Meatballs arrived literally minutes after we placed our first order. Meatballs reminded us of what is in a cabbage roll. The tomato sauce was a bit watery and the centre was barely luke warm but was fully cooked. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. Chicken wings were delicious! An order came with 4 full wings that were really crispy, juicy, and served with an interesting sauce. Seafood rice pilaf was okay - had a decent amount of seafood but not particularly flavourful. The baked shrimp was nice - cooked perfectly with a beautiful garlic butter sauce. Yum! I didn't taste the beef skewers but my friend seemed to like it. My friend and I were there talking for almost 3 hours and we didn't feel rushed or were asked to leave. The restaurant was busy but wasn't completely full. A few highs and lows at Bodega. Always wanted to try this place so I'm glad I finally got to give it a go yesterday. The interior is classy and has a very intimate atmosphere. Got the pallea mixta, calamari, pork loin, mushrooms and fried chicken wings. I think for me the best thing was the fried wings, basic but done really and super tasty. The paella was good but seemed a bit plain in flavour, had to order a side of their garlic aoli because the aoli was just so good with everything. I've been to Spain a few years ago and I really enjoy Spanish food, thus I was ecstatic to try this place with my family. Most of all, I was excited to have paella again since I haven't had it since then. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and feels very upscale. The service was excellent and the staff was nice. The bathroom was also very clean. It seems that I have an unpopular opinion considering the previous reviews on this restaurant. I enjoyed the salad and out of the items ordered, this was the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, the paella was disappointing. It was a bit soggy and the flavour didn't quite hit. We were a family of 4 and couldn't finish the whole meal so the portion sizes are considerable! The paella can probably fit 4-5 with hungry stomachs. I'd like to think I got the food on an one off day because of the great reviews that preceded mine. It is also rather hard to find Spanish restaurants around Vancouver. It's our first time back to Bodega since the pandemic began and it did not disappoint. We had tried to go a few times in the past year but were not able to book a table online even weeks in advance. So we finally decided to just walk by right before 6pm and were surprised they had tables available! We started the meal with EL "CAESAR" with crispy chickpeas and shaved manchego cheese, followed with CHAMPIÑONES (sauteed mixed mushrooms) with garlic and sherry. Loved this place so much after my recent brunch experience I had to share more details: Brunching at Bodega on Main - Huevos Benedictino was one of the best Benedict's I've had. Great Spanish flavour with lots of saffron hollandaise (I'm a sauce junkie, the more the better) over perfectly cooked poached eggs on top of toasted baguettes topped with portobellos and shrimps and piquello relish. He has the Breakfast Torta - grilled pork loin over toasted baguette topped with fried eggs and manchego cheese They have spaced out tables and dividers between other tables to ensure safe social distancing. Service was amazing as well! Very nice staff who were accommodating with splitting our confusing bill. Food was a 7 or 8/10. Recently my friends and I decided to try out Bodega because of the overall glowing reviews and recommendations online. The happy hour with discounts was appealing. It even got Review Of The Day'ed so I had to try it. As a transit user, it was conveniently located near the Main st. science world skytrain station so it was pretty easy to get to. Just a couple minutes on foot which is great. Because of the current pandemic, we were sat at the corner booth and it was divided by a huge clear plexiglass separating ourselves from the other booth table. All the staff wore masks. QR codes for a website to the menu instead of an actual menu were given. I think they did a good job with the pandemic precautions and I felt safe. I liked the ambience. The dining area was more dim than i prefer though. The old school hanging lamps and old spanish style posters hanging on the wall was nice. Table space is quite nice and spacious. The booths are big, comfortable, and very clean. Overall it looks like an old spanish restaurant you'd typically see in Spain. Washrooms were also very clean and modern. Catchy pop/indie music played in the background. Only a few customers were around at the time so it wasn't that loud. You can definitely carry a conversation without shouting. Service was great. Drinks came fast. Daniel was a friendly and patient server. We didn't feel rushed since it was our first time and needed extra time looking through the menus. The food came faster than expected. We were told the paella would take 30 minutes but it came in at about 15 minutes or so! The food quality is where I disagree with most the glowing reviews on Yelp. The Paella Mixtra yellow saffron was alright. It looked visually pleasing and it smelled nice. The saffron rice was quite fragrant. It had a weird ratio of rice and seafood. There was a single big piece of chicken thigh which was strange, but you have to search for the rice because there wasn't enough of it. There were too many mussels and clams. The chorizo was overcooked and quite hard to chew. The shrimp were nice and big. Overall, it tasted alright. This dish is one of the best values on the menu when you share with friends at $38. The Patatas Bravas (Fried potatoes with house sauce) I probably wouldn't order again. The house sauce was more vinegary than i liked. Zesty was described on the menu which it isn't. The sauce taste didn't match the fries, more like a salad dressing. The fries themselves were cooked well and crispy. Small portion too. Slightly overpriced even at a discount at $7. The bravas cured ham (Jamon Serrano) was underwhelming. Be forewarned that it's really salty! It came with a bunch of olives with seeds inside them. The several slices of cured ham got gobbled up in seconds. You can actually buy a big pack of cured ham at a store such as Whole Foods and a box of olives and make this exact dish yourself without cooking at all. For less! Such as simple dish at a high price point ($12) The grilled pork loin (Montaditos de Lomo) was great taste-wise. The pork loin was nice and tasty. Nicely grilled. The bread was cooked inconsistently. Some of it was burnt and black at the bottom. It still tasted good with the seasoning and butter that they put on top. Very small portion for the price though ($9). We ordered red wine to complement the meal. Normally I like spanish wines but this was one was more of the disappointing ones as it was too light for my liking and not full-bodied enough. It did however tasted better towards the end of the meal, probably after my palate had been exposed to the various flavors of the dishes we ordered. I gotta say that none of the food we ordered that night really stood out. The price point for the food is pretty high for what you get. If you come for value, don't come here. Come more for the nice ambience and service than the food, which is alright but not amazing quality, with pretty small portions. This is such a cute place to visit in the summer with a small group of friends or couple dates. We didn't have any expectations as none of us are experts with Spanish dishes. But we were surprised with some yummy treats. We ordered some side dishes to share. The beef skewer was definitely a winner. The Albondigas were very tasty. Fried Chicken wings usually taste better with a lot of batter, but the brine style was definitely on the healthier side to soak all the flavors in! The blistered peppers were surprisingly good! It's crunchy yet still juicy. The waitress said this type peppers are usually not spicy, but there's always that single one would give a bite to it. Guess who got the token spicy one? Meee lol For main dish, we ordered the Paella Mixta to share. I would say portion wise, it's enough for two people. We had four people to share and it wasn't enough for everyone to go second round, hence why so we ordered some extra side dishes. The saffron rice was cooked just the right temperature. You can taste different seafood flavor in the rice with a hint of lemon juice, very refreshing. I would say this was the highlight of the night. At the end of the day, nothing beats a jar of fresh sangria to share among some good friends. We had a great time and the waitress we had were very friendly and knowledgeable. Top-notch, authentic Spanish food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Having such gotten back from Spain and being blown away by the food, we decided to try Bodega out, having seen that they can cater to vegans. The interior is beautifully designed, somewhat reminiscent of a restaurant in Barcelona. The centrepiece of our meal was a vegetable paella (comes default vegan; $38), which serves (at least!) 2 people. I asked our server how many side dishes / tapas she recommended on top of this, and she said 3-4; so we tried 4 more tapas dishes: -Pan Con Tomate ($9). This is a very simple dish that is typically eaten earlier in the day in Spain. It's usually just toasted bread with blended tomato, garlic, olive oil and salt. Bodega does it fancier, with grilled bread. Very nicely done, not too garlicky or salty. A very nice way to start the meal. 5/5 -Patatas Bravas ($10). This was my favourite tapas dish. Basically, it's twice-cooked potatoes with a zesty, cashewy tomato sauce. Beautiful stuff. 5/5 -Pistos Andaluz ($10). A Spanish ratatouille, with peppers, tomato, onions, and zucchini. Great flavours and textures -- the bell peppers were particularly cooked perfectly. 5/5 -Pimientos de Padron ($10). Padron peppers are a national staple in Spain, coming blistered and drizzled (and covered) in chili flakes and salt. They were perfectly cooked, nicely oily, perhaps under-salted, and could've done with more chili, but those are minor critiques. The peppers were cooked perfectly and a joy to eat. 4.5/5 The above all warmed up our stomachs for the paella, which takes about half an hour to cook. It came out piping hot, with a wonderful assortment of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, fennel, artichoke, asparagus, marinated red pepper, king oyster, mushrooms, padron peppers, and peas, with some lemon wedges). The rice was lightly spiced with saffron, and the flavours opened up more as it cooled down. The parts underneath stuck to the skillet were particularly flavourful. Very authentic and reminiscent of veggie paella you get in Spain. This was a monstrous portion and would've been enough food without the tapas. 5/5 Top-notch and quick service, which is definitely different than the slow nonchalant service you get in Spain (:P). Went here last night - super lovely little spot. Every single tapas dish was amazing - simple, delicious, quintessential Spanish. Classics like pan con tomate are just absolute bangers. Dish after dish, it was fantastic. They had a nice sangria special going on Wednesday too. Taking one star off for the Senyoret paella, seafood was okay but overall dry and uneventful. I wish I would have just stuck with more tapas instead. The olives were simple but incredible, arugula salad surprisingly fantastic (vegetarian friend ordered and we loved it), piquillos rellanos we're AMAZING, the anchovies were so acidic and lovely, mojama very delicious, prawns with sherry YUM! I hadn't been to Bodega in decades. At another location on Main Street near the Pacific Central Station. The 4 of us shared a bit of everything. For starters we shared the charcuterie board from Spain (very tasty) with grilled bread. We had the meatballs appetizer (okay) and the deep fried calamari (tasty and tender calamari). We ordered the classic paella (not too wowing) and squid ink paella. Of all the food we ordered, the squid ink paella won everyone over as it had the most flavour. Orders for paella takes 30 minutes and is enough to share for 2 people. Make sure you make reservations way ahead of time. If there are 4- 6 in your group, ask for the table at the front window. Service was good and we didn't feel rushed. The server gave us great recommendations. The place has a nice vibe. A great place to get together with friends and family. Honestly did not expect such a nice place based on its location. Despite the unassuming exterior, Bodega is quite large inside with candle lit booths on two floors. The building is old but the ambience is fantastic! We ordered off the happy hour menu which is essentially a list of tapas like meatballs, potatoes, cured meats, etc. The menu is in Spanish and the only thing I recognized were the churros. But the servers were very helpful and could easily list the whole happy hour menu in English for us. We tried almost every item and none of them disappointed. Especially the churros, which were even better than I expected. They also had some drinks for happy hour and the house wine paired quite well with everything. We ended up staying there for more than 2 hours but the servers were very friendly and helped us throughout the night :) read more
