5 pintxos for $32. We shared a plate of 5 + a slice of tortilla and that was enough for 2, athough we were not very hungry. It is a tapas bar, limited options. They have 8 kinds of pintxos, cheese, charcuterie, and some side dishes. So for a light dinner or pre dinner, this is a good place. It's casual so don't expect fancy service. Staff is nice and welcoming. They had live music (Spanish guitar soloist) which was a nice touch. Rating is more like 3.5, food and value is ok, but venue and ambiance is one of a kind. read more

The last time I had visited La Boqueria was during its soft opening, which seems like so many years ago but I'm very glad to say that i was able to come back post-lockdown for another unforgettably great meal! We had begun our night at Bar Gobo and just was not feeling it, so we decided to come to La Boqueria instead for dinner. We were able to get a table right away with a quick phone call, and they saved us a table upon our arrival! We mainly came here for wine and the delicious Pintxos, and between the two of us we shared a bottle of the Blasted Church Hatfields Fuse, and a platter of 5 Pintxos (great date meal!). Due to the current circumstances they seemed to be understaffed so the food was taking longer than usual so they offered us a complimentary dish of Pulpo a la Gallega - perfectly cooked giant octopus with potato, mayo and paprika - if I knew how delicious it was I would have definitely ordered it as an appy! The Pintxos are to die for - perfect for sharing. Our favourite was probably the negitoro, and the ultimate sardine. The platter of 5 is a perfect portion for 2 people and a great way to try a selection of Pintxos and a delicious explosion of variety of flavors. This place is a must-visit for seafood lovers, and such a unique offering comparing to the many tapas options in the city. My only feedback is I would have probably liked a more extensive list of red wine; maybe more full bodied reds? The cocktail list also looks amazing as well but sharing a bottle of wine is such a great date idea that we decided to leave the cocktails for our next visit. If you are looking for an unique romantic date night spot, I would highly recommend La Boqueria because it will be sure to delight and surprise your date with a great meal, ambiance, and great service. Very friendly staff and eclectic atmosphere for cocktails and Spanish pintxos & tapas. We tried the pintxo platter (5 for $35) which included various toppings (jamon, sardine, squid, salmon, yellowtail) on bread. I would have preferred if the bread was slightly toasted to give it more texture, however I don't believe it would be traditional to do so. In terms of value, $7 each is a bit steep, but this is Vancouver and not Spain! My favourite dish of the night was the Pulpo a la Gallega (octopus with potato, mayo and bittersweet paprika - $20). The flavours were excellent and I loved the puffy potato. However, the value was not great for the portion. The cocktails that I tried were excellent (watermelon martini and caipirinha). The sardines are good but slightly on the fishy side for me. Will order the other 3 the next time I there! **HAPPY HOUR REVIEW** This place brings back memories of Barcelona, the last trip before the pandemic. The place is named after Mercat de Sant Joseph de la Boqueria, which is a famous historical market in Barcelona. The Hubs and I came here on a Saturday afternoon, and was greeted with a warm welcome. The atmosphere is cozy with '20s music playing in the background (reminds me of The Marvelous Ms. Maisle) We were seated comfortably distant from other guests at one of the bar tables. The bar area is quite stocked with food and ingredients. The chef prides itself on an ever changing menu based on Chinatown's local available ingredients. We really appreciate that as we want rotational menu and hope restaurants adopt menus that fit the seasonal offerings. Normally we don't sing about services, but these guys are great and we love chatting with them. We ordered the vermouth & soda ($5) and Negorni ($9). The negorni was really well done with the blood orange slice adding another flavour profile. Tapas we ordered were: - Deep fried chicken skin ($5): totally deep fried, crispy. Just as expected with a deep fried skin. - Deep fried mussels ($8): not much batter. Decent sized mussels. Good aiole sauce. About 14 mussels. - Padron peppers ($7): the sour cream dip was nice. Peppers that were not overtly fried. - Croquettas ($9): both were great, but our preference is on the salmon as we can taste the flavour of salmon coming out over chorizo. We decided to try this place out one night, as we had driven by several times before and saw the Pintxo sign out front. I was very excited as we had just come back from Barcelona and fell in love with all the pintxo places there! Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. I was expecting it to be better, as I had read other people's reviews and their food photos looked great - it looked promising. I asked one of the staff about their sangria, he said he tried it and it's awesome so I ended up ordering one. It was pretty bland with a couple pieces of fruit thrown into it. It tasted like it was missing something? Their pricing on their website is different from their chalk board menu in restaurant, I guess they haven't updated recently. They are charging $6 a pintxo, that's pretty steep! There's a option to order 5 for $26 but that's still $5.20 each. We ended up ordering the 5 pintxos for $26 and their house ceviche that the server was upselling. For the pintxos we picked the 2 Gilda (anchovy, 2 olives and 2 peppers), 1 kraken (giant squid, manchego cheese and smoked paprika) and 2 west coast Quimet (smoked salmon, cream cheese, honey and balsamic reduction with salmon roe). Gilda was not worth it at all, the kraken barely had a few bits of squid on it, the Quimet was the best one but I can spread Philadelphia cream cheese on sliced bread top it with smoked salmon. It's like eating bagels & lox minus the balsamic reduction. I hate being upsold on something and it turns out bad, which came to the house ceviche. We eaten a lot of ceviche and this was very mediocre. It was really big chucks of fish, it wasn't tender at all and seems like what you get when you overcook fish, kind of a rubber type texture? I hope the quality, portions and/or pricing changes. I would like to see this place more like the pintxos we had in Barcelona! I may give it another try! read more

One word - DELISH. I haven't been this excited about a new restaurant in awhile and my bf said he exact same. He had heard about this joint opening back in April but the summers been so busy that we finally had a date night. We decided La Boqueria would be fun as there are few Spanish tapas places in Van. We absolutely were blown away. The service (Paul) was awesome. He knew his food and brews and cocktails! Phil the owner also approached us during the night and was so humble and wonderful to talk to, he's proud of this joint and also so appreciative to have people enjoy it. I ordered the La Boqueria Cesar and my bf had the Basque Cider. The Cesar was delicious, don't even get me started on the garnish!!! Two olives, sardine and two peppers holy ef it was good with a smoky rim too. I can't wait to get it again! We ordered the 5 Pintxos for $24 - AMAZING DEAL. We had the smoked salmon with balsamic and cream cheese, ahi tuna, octopus and manchego, blue cheese and honey, and sardine and red pepper with white fish pate - holy ef everything was so tasty - my fave was probs the blue cheese. The fat and funk of this bite was incredible. We also ordered the baked scallop with béarnaise and it was exceptional! Came with three crostini's that were super fresh and delicious. We finished the eve with a vermouth and soda water for $5 it was a great finish to the night. I want to come back tomorrow I loved it that much. Can't wait to see this place thrive. Saturday 4pm and there's a few people gathered outside eagerly waiting for it to open. I was hesitant to try it b/c what establishment keeps its happy hour customers waiting? Went to buy some Chinese pastries and on the way back saw that this restaurant has opened. DH really wants to support the restaurants in the hood so in we went. Started with a sangria and margarita - both very good. If paella is on the menu, it's a no-brainer for me. DH loves ceviche so that's his go-to. Both dishes were not huge in size, and not exceptionally presented, but tasted great. We particularly liked the rice in the paella, crispy and not burnt. The happy hour experience left us feeling we'd like to return to try more dishes. By the time we left, every table and seat at the bar was occupied and one family waiting outsize. Beer: Good beers on tap - beer for everyone, if you like a lighter or an IPA. I even saw cider on the menu - wish I tried it... Wine: they have a really cool selection of wine. I only tried the red, they were all very well described and lived up to their standards. The server was very knowledgeable in the wines and knew her stuff. She went above and beyond to explain the wines and even show me the bottle. Food: only reviewing the "amuse bouche" style crostini - which were flavourful and full of top ingredients. I could probably eat 6-7 of these. The blue cheese walnut was delicious, really smooth and creamy. Atmosphere: super cute place and nice decor. The chairs were comfy. The first time we visited La Boqueria, we had stumbled in one evening, days after their opening night and were blown away by the hospitality of the owner, their fresh ingredients and the unique compositions of their inspired tapas and cocktails - the owner even spent the time to concoct an off-the-cuff mixed drink when I asked about non-alcoholic options. The second time we visited the Chinatown "tasting room" was this evening and the experience was unfortunately quite different. While the dishes were tasty, particularly the creamy West Coast Quimet, the service was cold and forced - service that was incomparable to the warm culinary experience of our first visit. Sure, our situation was a little different this time. Tonight, we had invited some good friends to join us and we also brought our 11-month-old son who, to my confusion, clearly and quickly made our server uncomfortable, sadly setting the tone for the entire evening. While we got the odd, forced smile and bit of awkward eye contact, the service was clunky, making myself feel like an inconvenience rather than a guest at someone's home which I enjoy most about my favourite restaurants. Earlier in this post, I said that the food was good but I forgot to mention that it was a bit incomplete in that the slightly barren charcuterie board would have been more enjoyable had the server brought the ubiquitous bread before we were more than three quarters done the meal - bread that may not be the main component, but is still an important element to the tapas experience. Will we give it another chance? Maybe, but I doubt it. With more gracious and delicious tapas restaurants like Como Taperia in Mount Pleasant as well as Bodega on Main nearby, we'll likely spend our money - and valuable quality time with our new son - at one of those establishments where we know we'll have not only have great food, but a consistently memorable time. read more

Wonderful pinxos (or pintxos, or pinchos - whatever you prefer to call them) in a very Vancouver setting. Not *quite* the same atmosphere as a traditional down-to-earth Basque pinxos bar - the pinxos are not on display at the bar, drinks (including wine) don't come in scratched and possibly unwashed tumblers, the service is far from grumpy, it's not especially cheap, and it's not knee-deep in cigarette butts (don't knock it till you've tried it!) - but there's welcoming, casual service in a pleasantly low-key, tasteful, comfortable bar, along with reasonably priced, utterly delicious food which is as close as it gets to the real thing in this part of the world. There's the occasional nod to West Coast tastes, with ahi tuna and the like, and (though it does some interesting proper ciders) the wine is not fresh from the hills or cheap as water, but it's essentially very similar to what you might find in San Sebastien or Bilbao. As far as I can tell, it's currently the only place to get proper pinxos in town (I don't count taco bars, which are not the same thing at all even if they have the occasional pinxo on the menu), and it does them very well. read more
