I have been going to Bodes Corned Beef house for most of my life. I am 60 yrs old now days. My dad worked in the Railroad Depot there in Plymouth for all but a couple late years of his career when they sent him to Livonia. So you know I went to the old high school, and the new Salem high school. I went to school with the owner. I had not been there in quite a while as we live in Farmington Hills now and it is a way down there, so with the winter, we had not been there, and I am not even sure how much last summer before that. We decided since we had to go down to Dearborn last night, that we would stop there and have a bite to eat. We got out of the car, and some other couple did also, They were behind us and soon she was next to me, she said to me, " what, do you think it is summer?" I said well I am pushing for it, but actually I had on a huge thick very heavy sweatshirt and was plenty warm. Then she pushed through the door before my husband could open it for me to go in. She then said, " I am going to have to get on MY girls as they didn't put the special on the menu", and walked over to a menu that they had in the back by the restrooms, against the wall. Come to think of it now, I don't believe that Richard had that there, but could be wrong. She started talking about something, but we just went ahead in, we already knew what we were there for, or at least I did. I have not looked at a menu for probably 20 or 30 yrs in here. We were sitting in the front part of the restaurant and the back booth next to the stairs that go to the other dining room. She was then sitting on the stool and talking loudly about she told him this and she told him this, and she told him that, and I thought what, did Richard get a new manager, she seemed so bossy when we walked in the door about her GIRLS not doings the special board. I suddenly said to my husband, is Richard gone? He said I was wondering too, as all the cups that belonged to reg. customers were gone off the wall. My heart fell. I got my food and it was wrong, I had ask for a Box Car NOT GRILLED. Been eating them for years, suddenly the waitress or the cook could not get it right and brought me a grilled one. I said this has to go back. A few minutes later I got the most sloppy sandwich, the corned beef not even put on the bread right, the bread was so dry that it just broke apart and went to pieces, the slaw does not taste like Richards, and the bread totally wrecked it, I don't know if it was a different brand or if it was just old. Something was wrong. Then this man who walked in with her is behind the counter, and he waves at me and then ask if I were mad at him, well I could not really see who he was, and didn't recognize him at all. I knew a lot of the people who went there for coffee and food every day as I did for years too. I just ignored that. Then she comes to our booth and gets on her knees at the end of the table and tells us Richard was gone, all I wanted to do was cry at that point, and get out, but I knew I had to eat as it was a long night before I would be home to get something to eat. She started to ask me about what she should put in the place, and I said the only change I would make, is I would like to see a fresh burger or two, fresh not the frozen patties, she begin to run Richard down, and say he was " a control freak " and it took 4 weeks for him to allow her chief to cook an egg when he was there learning before she bought it. The only thing that told me, Richard must not have had much faith in him at all. She finally got off her knees and left, I thought that was the most rude thing. Richard would look someone's way and mouth, hello with a nice smile, or bring your plate if the waitresses were busy and ask how you were, but other than that, he didn't come and hover over the table you were eating at. My husband said they are trying too hard and they will not be there long. There were trying very hard, too hard, acting like they knew us, we don't go for that, it is not genuine at all. Then she was talking about the fish, which is the best I have eaten, I am a Catholic and eat fish for lent and have never had any as good as his. We also eat it other times too, and have yet to find anything better, but she wants beer battered, and his is just this certain brand, and I won't mention that out of respect for him. I don't care what he used, or did, the food was fantastic every time. I ask for a piece of pie to go, Cherry, thought oh, boy have tea and cherry pie when I finally got home that evening. Well when we got to the car, I opened the box and said to my husband, why did I order this after I knew he was gone, and knowing the other stuff was not that good? The pie was burnt around the crust and even the top was awful dark, nothing like the pies that i used to carry home with me a lot from Bodes after a meal. They were always fresh and wonderful. Good Bye to Richard and Pam, it was wonderful being there for many years with you, but no more. read more
